Each of these natural disasters had a huge death toll, and with two exceptions (Eurpoean heat wave and Indian earthquake) each occurred in a country or region dominated by repressive, authoritarian governments. I don't think it's a coincidence. Could this be yet another benefit of encouraging democratic governments?

Details show a strange feature. Almosst all natural calamities strike the underprivileged people. Adding salt to their injuries, they also face apathy of their leaders who pilfer for self advantage almost all humanitarian assistance provided by the world. Animal in man is more pronounced in such leaders. World should find means and devices to ensure foolproof delivery of help/ assistance to the people actually in urgent need.

Both of my parents have relatives in Rangoon as they are Burmese, and were born in Burma. My father fled Burma just before 1962 when the military seized this country, and he has not returned since.

They raised three children born in Allentown, PA; Waltham, MA and myself in Grand Junction, CO. My sisters and I have been trying to reach any relative to no avail.

It would be a boon if the Bush Administration provided aid directly to the United Nations. People could rest easy knowing that our nation's money is going to a reputable agency and not to the Burmese military.

In short, I can't understand why India's meteorological team's warning wasn't heeded by the government.

The Burmese would have had two days to head to higher land and would not be without food and water.

NASA, NOAA and the National Reconnaissance Organization could also have easily given adequate warning and provided the Burmese with information regarding response to the cyclone.

In all, this is very sad. In time, this will pass, but I pause to ponder why, why, why?

How on earth can you describe the UN as "a reputable agency"? Of course, the money shouldn't go to the Burmese military. But the UN is the Food for Oil agency that was suckered by Saddam's cronies and family members for hundreds of millions of dollars. The UN is also the agency that has provided in country sexual abuse for nations in Africa that had UN staff come in to "help". How about letting America be America and let the American ships go in and do what they do best?

And, by the way, exactly how could the Burmese have been provided with info from NASA and NOAA? The things suffered by your countrymen and relatives are horrific, but please know that the much hated and vilified American government and American public can't provide magic answers and solutions on the spot when it suits the purposes of people who truly are in dreadful need. Are we now to accept that NASA and NOAA are responsible for the whole world? That's the premise of your assumption.

It's infuriating to be spit on the public relations for decades (I'm in my 60's so I've seen it for a long time) by the rest of the world who hates America, and then, when the chips are down, have that same world screaming at us that we're "not responding right". Figure out what you want. (Yeah. I'm angry.)

Deliberately withholding information about an imminent disaster should qulaify as a crime against humanity. The UN should act accordingly.
Some compare with Katrina which was different. The Cheney/Bush administration did not withhold information. They made promises of aid for PR purposes after the fact, with no intention of following through on the promises. The wealthy right wing did not want to fund the promises made after Katrina because it would threaten their tax cuts and they did not anticipate that they would get a reciprocal political benefit from a predominantly poor African American community. In a similar vein, the wealthy right wing did not want to properly fund the war effort because it also could threaten their tax cuts.

Its insane to suggest that Nature "Attacks"
To attack is " to use force against in order to harm", which means that nature has some conscious intent to do harm.
Nature is nature, and in fact we are all one with nature, as without nature none of us would exist.
To suggest that we are seperate from Nature and subject to attack shows ignorance and seperation which is the root of FEAR!
Perhaps when we truly understand our connection with Nature and eachother, we would be more ready and willing to react with help to those in need.
None of us leave this earth with our human bodies, and as each body changes throughout it's lifetime, so does this earth, when we as humans happen to be where earth is changing, we may lose life, and property.
How we react to that loss is the challenge, not blaming something outside ourselves for "doing this to us".
Loves intent and purpose is the oneness of the whole!
