A Dangerous Place

India and Pakistan have made real progress in the 10 years since their first nuclear tests, but the relationship is still a powder keg.

Comment: It is time that us Pakistanis start looking at ourselves. In the international community Pakistan is viewed as a haven for terrorists. Our President is a dictator who couldn't silence the minority fundamentalists yet took rights away from the majority moderates. Most of us want to do better economically and practice Islam the way we want to - not the madarassa educated narrow minded Mullah! My parents don't think things will change much unless the moderate youths believe that democracy is possible. Democracy is imperfect. Yes there will be problems; however, over time this is the only solution. When someone tries to force their backward version of Islam on us, we can voice our opinion and say no without any fear! Change has to come from within only then others will start looking at us differently. We don't have to spend billions trying to match our neighbour instead, we can spend that money on education health etc. Broadmindedness is what we need not a war of words with others. Pakistan Zindabad!!!

Comment: Anybody with a common sense, little above ZILCH level, will agree to the comments posted by rkhatal, Abbas, hankhan, qassu etc. Now wait and see when the Government of INDIA honors the "LEARNED" writter with the TOP CIVILIAN AWARD for fueling the fire with myopic vision, unifocal analysis, and narrating selected facts with misquotes and wrong data. But I am wondering what went wrong with the eidtors at NEWSWEEK?? How come such a shalow article made it to their website?? Are they are keeping numb just to keep Billions Indians visitng their website so that they can earn more advertisements???

Comment: For almost fifteen years, I have seen the poison that has been spread by the fundamentalists in India. In truth they are not that different from the fundamentalists in Pakistan. So I am not sure why author chooses to concentrate on one side only ? An obvious bias or perhaps that is the only way to get his article published !

Fundamentalist in India have curtailed freedom of many. Attacked churches, torn down mosque and killed more people in riots than what Osama and his cronies did in New York City. Yet leaders of many of these organizations are allowed to frequent US and raise funds here among Non-Resident Indians.

Real danger lies when fundamentalists spread their agenda through gullible academics and brink two countries to brink of war. There were almost no attacks in India outside of Kashmir until the Mosque was torn down and the riots that followed in Mumbai.

Fundamentalists on both side need to be sidelined and it should be done as soon as possible.

Comment: Qassu, Except naming calling you haven't advanced any argument or facts to dissprove Sumit Ganguly's thesis. Now please do not call me another Indian agent.

Comment: I completely agree with you "qassu"... what kind of rambling nonsensical article is this?? The author is obviously biased and can't get past his own prejudices long enough to right a straightforward research piece on the matter. For god's sake, the the last thing these two countries need right now is negative propaganda about their relationship with each other as neighboring countries and about their nuclear programs. I think Mr. GANGULY needs to go "home" for a visit to soak up some of his own culture.... Especially disturbing to me is the fact that this guy is a professor or research director at a university..I can only imagine what sort of crap advice he must be giving to students. Have to say that I'm disappointed that Newsweek chose to publish such a biased piece of writing. The author seems ignorant as to the real issues being faced by Pakistan and India at this time... isn't there enough inner turmoil taking place in each of these countries? I fail to understand why this guy felt the need to rekindle animosity between the two nations.

Comment: 'Despite the restoration of civilian rule in December of last year...'

The writer does not even know that the elections in Pakistan were held in February of this year and not in December of last year. The writer is an Indian, a Hindu fundamentalist who certainly does not know a hoot about Pakistan. He looks like an Indian agent, being paid to write stories about Pakistan based on fiction and conjectures. I have read his pieces in the past and they are all anti Pakistan.

Why did India test a bomb in the first place and make the world less safe? Stop blaming Pakistan for reciprocating Indian hostility towards Pakistan. Pakistan test its bomb only as self deterrence against Indian aggression.

Newsweek has turned into weak news.

Comment: Some more propaganda from another "expert" of which we seem to have too many.

It is time for the old saying Charity begins at home to be applied by all nations, America included.

America has enough problems from pedophile preists, church leaders who marry under age women, to drug addicts, and alcoholics, not to forget tax evaders and cheats. And in case Mr. Ganguly has forgotten we also have a serious problem with anti immigrant feelings running very high and a uncertain time ahead with a Presidential election around the corner.

Time for America to look inward at itself.

    Period!
