Comment: That's the great thing about having a name like mine - Claus. Never have to worry in a crowed room when someone calls "Claus" that someone else will pipe up.

Comment: My Nicolas has the Spanish spelling to honor is Great grandfather, and James to honor is step grandfather. I have a masculine sounding name, Erin, and it has been butchered many different ways, and I have the tradutional Celtic spelling. Why put an innocent child through kindergarten and DMV/Social Security hell? Is it the spelling of a name that make a child special, or is it the personality in the child?

Comment: And when you add spellings together, Emily was dethroned as the #1 name in 2007 by Sophia. The top ten are: Sophia, Emily, Isabella, Madison, Emma, Ava, Hailey, Abigail, Olivia, and Kaitlyn. (If you think of Alivia as being pronounced the same way as Olivia, Olivia would rise to #5.)

Comment: To add a some more statistics: 2007 was the first year ever that the #1 girls' name accounted for less than 1% of all girls born. Emily was only given to 0.9167 of girls in 2007.

When you add spellings that are pronounced the same together, you get some dramatic shifts in the SSA list. For 2007, Aiden and Jayden become the real #1 and #2 names, with Jacob dropping to #3. The rest of the top ten for boys are then Michael, Christopher, Ethan, Joshua, Daniel, Matthew, and Anthony. I haven't had time to figure out the girls yet, but will try to remember to post it when I do so.

Comment: My first and middle names have become quite popular. While growing up, I knew only one other girl with my first name. It was nice. Now I hear it in stores all of the time, I turn around to see who also has my name, and, the majority of the time it is a little, curly, blonde girl. Just like I was!
To name our baby, we are avoiding anything in the top 20. Luckily, in my youth, I met a beautiful & nice woman with an uncommon name and we are naming our girl after her. The baby, however, is getting my old middle name which is now number 11 in popularity. My mother is disappointed, but, I don't want my girl in classrooms with a bunch of other Elizabeths!

Comment: There's another possible reason why boys named Ashley, Leslie and Kelly act up in class more. Single mothers without a partner are far more likely to give sons "soap opera" names than women who have a male partner taking an active interest in the baby. If there's a dad in the picture, the son is more likely to be given a more traditional masculine name such as David or Michael. So, if Ashley is acting up more in class than David, this may be because he is from a single parent home.
