Comment: So if I enter "duke" will I get David or John Wayne?
Most search sites use the behavior of the majority as a proxy to determine what you're looking for. But what if you're in the minority?
Comment: So if I enter "duke" will I get David or John Wayne?
Comment: I think the majority of comments listed here are ridiculous, rude, and most importantly missing the point. From what I read in the article above the search engine is not meant to dumb down anything, it is meant to fine-tune searhces based on the demographic making the search. They gave a perfect example with the African-American searching with the word "whitney".
This has nothing to do with segregation or self-segregation, a company is providing a service to a particular demographic of people. Stores do it every day, Lane Bryant, Abercrombie and Fitch......they are catering to a particular market. Its business, and as the article states, a business that is planning on expanding to other demographics as well.
Lets see if there is this much fuss when a search engine is created for the everyday Soccer Mom.
Comment: is there any wonder why their is so much segregation? its black authors like N'Gai Croal reiterating the issue
Comment: If I had the audacity to recommend a "white" search engine to serve any purpose whatsoever, I would be labeled racist. But I have learned that behavior that is racist in a white person is not racist for an African American.
Comment: amen
Comment: More equal playing field I guess? Seems like more self segregation. Or could just be someone stating that the black user isn't smart enough to find information on a simple search engine without dumbing it down a bit. I would be offended if I was black. Someone let Al or Jessie know about this ASAP
Comment: Is the system based on Ebonics? Interesting. So if I was to type in "Bruda-man try'n ta hook up wit'da sista" the search engine would find Match.com?
Comment: Is it just me or does it seem like black people more and more want to segregate themselves? I have trouble believing that all the struggles of the black community are the majority's fault anymore.
Comment: ...and how does this web site determine between "Black" and "Non-Black" user to throw off the accuracy?
Comment: Is this neccesary? Is this author really insinuating that search engines are racist? "Non-Black users can throw off the accuracy? This is just a way to say "Non-Black users get off our web site!"
Comment: First BET, now this! Is this really neccesary? Is this person really insinuating that current search engines are racist?
Comment: No, their insinuating that blacks arent smart enough to find information on a search engine without dumbing it down a bit. Pretty offensive if you ask me.
Comment: That is what seperate but equal is all about.
