As aid is blocked, deaths spiral

The cyclone that ripped through Burma May 3 killed thousands; but the stillness and silence that followed could wreak much more havoc in the Southeast Asian country, as the nation's military rulers block aid agencies from entering to help. As the official toll approached 30,000 on May 12, relief organizations estimated 1.5 million are in need of food and water, and the country faces a "public heath catastrophe" if the military junta prevents supplies from getting through to its citizens.
