Images of devastation from China's earthquake

More than 24 hours after the earthquake hit, rescuers still couldn't get to its devastated epicenter. But even as the landslides, mudslides and blocked mountain roads prevented Chinese authorities from assessing the full the extent of the damage caused by the 7.9 quake that hit on Monday, May 12, the state news agency Ximhua put the death toll at more than 12,000. Authorities expect that number to rise still higher as rescuers continue to pull bodies from the rubble.
