Why Only-Children Rule

I have one older brother, and when I was growing up our family was considered tiny. Only-kids were freaks.

I am the mother of a 24 year old son. I've never referred to him as an only child or worse, a lonely only. I have only referred to him as my son or my kid and I very rarely felt guilty. My son and I are closer than most families.
How you present life and what comes with it has a major impact on your child. When we got a pet, we get one because the family wanted a pet, not to keep my son company or to be a replacement for a sibling. And yes, perhaps vacations are different, but they don' t have to be bad or boring.
My son is by no means a wonder child, but he has grown up to be a good, responsible and loving person. Other people have said that not just me, his mother J.

I am a 30 year old 'only child' who is currently pregnant with my first, and possibly only baby. I admit that growing up I really hated being an 'only'; family vacations were lonely, bad behavior never went unnoticed, and I was immensely curious what a sibling would look like. However, I strongly resent the popular belief that onlies are by nature selfish. In fact, I would argue the opposite. Families with only one child easily become adult centered. The child is almost always out-numbered, and therefore is expected to participate in adult activities. Families that have two or three kids have no choice but to take kid-friendly vacations or eat at kid-friendly restaurants. One child at a fancy restaurant or at a sophisticated museum is much more managable than three. Looking back on it now, I realize that as an only I was very lucky to be exposed to such things at a young age. However, at 10 years old, I certainly would have rather been at Disney World than quietly visiting the MOMA!
