    HBO has really gone South.

Was it ever north? It was that way since day one!

Okay, all of you that are morally outraged by all this, here's an idea: it's called the 'off' switch. I've been doing that ever since mindless reality TV took over the networks. I've managed to avoid watching a single episode of Survivor, American Idol, all of it. And I'll manage to avoid watching Swingtown, too. It's not hard.

SanityClause, They HAVE turned the tv off--but as one of the parents noted, what is to stop her boys from turning it off when they are older and the parents are not around--as they won't be every second....Yes, you have got to be in constant communication with your kids, talking about everything...but even in the best relationships, kids don't share EVERYTHING...

Even with adults sitting in a room watching a sports show you have to see all the commercials and previews. You have to edit your damn tv at those times as well. Its nothing but a *** driven, network money in my pockets CEO and director running this crap. I seriously would like to ring their necks

You gotta be kidding me. There's no sex on broadcast or cable TV. No nudity. It's tease only. And, as we all know, it's not the same thing. A very weak portrait of reality, which is the true problem with TV. Nothing is real. Very little is honest.

    • Posted By: jazzbebop @ 05/31/2008 4:26:49 PM

Ya nothing is honest in society anymore - including you.

This isn't a matter of public morals or whatever. It is a matter that half of the tvs are not fixed up so the kids can't see the programs and so I really think it is in poor taste to show that kind of stuff.

if it were not for scifi, there would be nothing on the tv to watch anymore.

I previewed "Swingtown" as part of a focus group last year. I was surprised it made it on the air. But what was most disturbing to me wasn't the show--that's just bad writing. What surprised--no SHOCKED me--was to hear this woman in the focus group wax on about how "swinging" is a reality and "let's show people what's real!" I don't remember where she lived, but....does anyone on this thread think that partner swapping is alive and well in the suburbs??? I don't even remember it being that way in 1976 when this show set. Anyway--my response to that comment was that I thought it was irresponsible to portray "swinging" as a lifestyle without showing the potential consequences (harm to the sanctity of marriage, loss of trust in spouses, venereal diseases, the onset of AIDS, pregnancies where paternity is left in question....)---would you believe that everyone in that room, including the CBS moderator--shot me down.

Oh, my husband was in the focus group for the same show for men--they all thought it would have been better on a network that could take it further...go figure.

It gives most Americans a queasy feeling knowing this sexual exploitation is becoming more widespread, most of us want decency, instead TV is becoming even more debauched.

What a sad state of affiars. Recruiting commericals, sex soaked television and media talking heads screaming we are all under threat of attack from Muslims, this country sinks further into something that makes me wince

I agree with so many of the comments already posted. TV is getting worse and worse. What kind of role models do we want for our families. We see all of these broken families on TV and that makes it normal when our family falls apart. Why try to work things out if no one on TV is trying. I think good wholesome family TV shows that have clean humor would do this country a lot of good.

I choose to not watch such trash and it seems that other people feel the same way by reading the comments posted. I wish we had a moral society that cared about how children are being brought up but we don't, Some parents that don't care let their children watch - then they go to school and tell my children all about it - you see it does get around. Things taht are shown and talked about on tv now would have been shameful a few years ago - WRONG is still WRONG - it has caused our morals to change slowly everything is ok anymore. What eventually happens to a society where anything goes??? No wonder there are so many rapes and abused children and we read about it in the news and can't understand why something like that coould happen??? DUH!

It would be nice to see the new TV shows "ramp up" on plot. But the execs and writers seem to think that America is too stupid to enjoy anything more intricate than who is banging who from week to week. Just because some other countries have different standards, America need not follow suit. Yes, we have "freedom of speech" but not everything need be expressed to absolute excess. Give us some choices, some good choices.

im 18, im supposed to get off on the raunchy sex scenes right?
WRONG. they are deporable and disgusting. An unimaginative way to boost ratings.
Sexual afficianados, do us all a favor: rent porn. Keep it off of my tv. Thanks.

The problem is they get away with one small gaffe and then that leads to another bigger one and then next season, the channel execs think that is too tame and it escalates. Do you think that a four year old is born with all the history of crappy shows already bred into their heads. Don't you think that a young child will find Bambi, and The littlest Mermaid just as entertaining as a kid of four or five did ten/twenty years ago? The execs don't think so. Just because they saw it and then progressed up through the crap we are exposed to, they think that everyone else is already numb from the junk and are ready to go on to the next stage.

A loss of innocence is just that, innocence from the crassness and outright disregard for any kinds of ethics or morals. I don't want to see the unethical attitudes and actions that were prevelent through the "Swinging Sixties". They were bad enough then, it doesn't get any more entertaining now.

I am tired of the progression to more and more explicit sex on TV and Movies. It is time we gave the kids and some of the rest of us a break. I actually think that people don't walk around with their tongues hanging out thinking only of having sex with everyone they see. I don't think we have to advertise for some more drugs to give guys an erection, just because they have probably been playing around with it so much it is desensitzed and needs to be given a break. Even too much milk shake tastes bad after a while. There are far more things that are worthwhile in this world. I would like to see some of them as the overwhelming impetus for everything we are trying to do in life, instead of sex.

Want to know why reality TV is taking off? Shows like American Idol, Dancing With The Stars, Amazing Race, etc...are entertaining and great family fun. Most of the shows Hollywood is writing these days makes me sick. Where can this Mom go to strike against the writers?

Why has reality TV taken off? Shows like American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, Amazing Race, etc... are entertaining and great family viewing. I can't stand the trash that Hollywood is writing. Where can this Mom go on strike from prime time?

  • Posted By: notthismonth @ 05/30/2008 6:58:58 PM

Just what we need more trash for our children to be exposed to. What ever happened to "GOOD" programs, programs that enforced good morality and standards? Is this country that hard up we have to push sex on everyone to make a buck?

No wonder the Arabs don't want us around them. I don't blame them.
