How can a few narrow minded bigots like Gellar create a firestorm like this ? The thing that irritates me is the fact that nobody is going after Gellar the blogger for being a intolerant hateful racist. She probably drapes herself in the flag and cross, saying this is all in the name of the Lord and doesn't even recognize that Jesus wouldn't resort to hate speech !

    • Posted By: M1rth @ 06/02/2008 11:24:37 AM

how about: Because calling out the Kaffiyeh is the same as calling out someone with an Iron Cross, or Odin Rune, or Swastika armband, or a KKK hood, or a Machete-Eagle of Aztlan.

I would hope you would stand up against people who espouse genocide and racism, but clearly you think "Jesus" stands for those things...

      • Posted By: rapiiid @ 06/02/2008 11:30:44 AM

did you even read the above comment mirth? they say jesus doesn't stand for those things! and a ghutra is a symbol of freedom from the zionist state! your references would be if the keffiyeh was worn by israelis as they persecuted the palestinians, such as whites, being in the kkk, persecuting blacks, the victims. but instead, it's worn by palestinians, the victims, who believe in their human rights!

        • Posted By: M1rth @ 06/02/2008 11:59:34 AM

          "freedom from the zionist state"

Wow. Tell me, is it the kaffiyeh around your neck, or the swastika armband on your left shoulder, speaking there?

          • Posted By: rapiiid @ 06/02/2008 12:39:00 PM

that's ridiculous. have you heard of the occupation?! it's because of nazis and the west that people created israel! and you know what? people were already living there! it's zionism that is the problem. they're occupying people. it's a modern religious crusade and you call the victims extreme?! you dare say their symbols of freedom are equivalent to the nazis who killed millions during wwii? was poland invading germany when hitler decided to implement his "master plan?" no. he was wrong. you are wrong. you are the fascist, racist and you're too blind to recognize it! freedom isn't free, mirth! you're an instigator without morals.

              rapiid,

Unfortunately you are faling for the PLO's lies too. Before WWII, Jews had started to come to Palestine and BOUGHT land from the Arabs living there. (There had also always been a population of Jews in Palestine, albeit a small one.) They were charged exhorbitant prices (sometimes 20 times the normal value, which they did pay) for land that was thought to be unarable and malaria laden. The Arabs sodl them the land figuring that eventually the Jews would (like the Arabs had) fail to grow anything and either abandon it or die of Malaria. Luckily, the Jews were far better farmers than the Arabs were and also had far better knowledge of science and agriculture so they created very advanced irrigation systems and in the process rid the land of its malaria problem. (They even offered this knowledge to the neighboring Arabs who were ordered by the Grand Mufti to refuse.)

Additionally, in 1917, the Balfour declaration had already stated that there should be a Jewish himeland in PAlestine. And it was also part of the post WWI breakup of the Ottoman Empire and the League of Nations British Mandate of Palestine. The original land that was to be given to the Jews was far greater than that finally given to them after WWII. Many of the "long term owners" of the land had actually been there for less than 100 years and had been moved there by the Ottomans.

Hamas amd the PLO of the 1960-1990's were NOT freedom fighter they were terrorists. Freedom fighters do NOT target civilians, and Hamas and the PLO specifically targetted civilians and Jews outside of Israel.

But Mirth is a fool to think that the kaffieyh is a symbol of terrorism. It is not , nor is it s symbol of freedom. It is just a piece of clothing. And Rachael Ray was not wearing a kaffieyh, but a paisley scarf.

Thank you for saying this so eloquently. Our own soldiers in the region are wearing the keffiyeh for protection and comfort in those harsh desert elements. Shall we label them as terrorists, too?

anyone know how to get to this Geller womans blog about this? I just have to read it.

      momof3teens,
To find Gellars blog just Google "brainless garbage". You will have the choice of Gellar, Malkin or Coulter.

olorin76- OK, you're wrong. What would be the Christian equivalent of a not-quite-a-kaffiyeh scarf? A tasteful gold cross? Maybe a seasonal scarf with some sort of Christmas tree or something? These would have not caused the slightest ripple unless they made Rachael look fat or something. Honestly, the paranoid fundamentalist Christian thing has got to stop. You have always been the dominant religion in America, and your influence is undeniably greater now than 25 years ago. So enough already with the hyperventilating.

  • Posted By: dalrymplesteampipe @ 06/03/2008 4:40:12 PM

Olorim- you're wrong. Ray could easily have worn Christian symbols without creating a ruckus. Especially if they were as subtle as the scarf-that-almost-was-a-keffiyeh. A tasteful gold cross necklace? A seasonal green/red scarf w/Christmas trees, etc.? No reaction- guaranteed. Can we stop with the paranoid Christian thing? You are, and always have been, the majority religion w/the most influence in this country. Enough already.

swienke: It becomes so when its use is to advance provocation. As previously noted, the keffiyeh, has been a device of legitimate use for decades by even westerners, especially soldiers while serving in desert climates. A t-shirt is a t-shirt,except when it bears a visage of a Che,which would have its wearer beaten to a pulp in several sections of Miami. A hat is just a hat, except when its its obviously Chinese form comes with the icon of a red star attached, which would have had you pilloried in sections of Hong Kong or Taiwan. As was already stated, the scarf worn by Ray was not even keffiyeh, and thus its critics were made to look even more foolish. Yet ''mainstreaming''terrorist attire and looks, from 1960s Che posters to these newer HEZBOLLAH devices has been a portion of the western fashion look for many years. [indeed, one of the main purposes of non-serving anti-Vietnam War protestors in the 1960s,in wearing surplus military clothing, was to provide controversy in a willing form, which was matching a exterior look, with their own belief systems]. For an empirical exercise, one need only sit down in the areas surrounding say,USF,CUNY,or UC Berkeley, and observe the array of clothing worn by students with a social or political bent which would be deemed controversial in some sections of the country and even the world.

I agree that the scarf ad should not have been pulled, and I am a republican. I find it dispicable that Geller would use this as a stunt for political gain with ultra-conservatives. I am disappointed in Dunkin Donuts but not at all surprised given there customer demographic. But I think you are wrong to compare what would have happened if she wore something overtly hispanic or african american. A better analogy would be if she wore something overtly Christian in her ad. I bet she's be lambasted on the other end of the spectrum and ANSWER wouldnt have cared one bit. Tell me Im wrong.

"The greatest danger to freedom is loss of freedom" Check the following links of whose pictures we should ban next to sustain and support a culture of hatred that some few want us to have; have we not learned the lessons of the past: American Indians, salvery, Japanese Americans, and now Muslim Americans, or least say, as in here, anything that refers to their culture or dress? I certainly won't buy from Dunkin Donut anymore; I don't support intolerance and ingnorance!

The keffiyeh is not "terrorist chic." I'm no expert, but from what I know the keffiyeh is to the Middle East as the baseball cap is to America: it's nothing more than a piece of clothing. It's worn by Palestinians and other Middle Easterners from all walks of life and all ideological positions. Just because Arafat wore it all the time does not mean that all people who wear it are terrorists. That's like watching a short television interview with some sort of racist redneck wearing a baseball cap (and I've seen plenty) and therefore assuming that ALL people who wear baseball hats are racist rednecks.

Speaking of being ''put through the wringer'',why would the Danish Embassy in Pakistan be bombed with the murder of at least six people today?[over a cartoon}? Talk about overwrought sensibilities. Even the DD critics are not killing anyone.[Nor are any Jews over the image of Frank being used as a Keffiyeh poster girl].
Todays UK TELEGRAPH has the Birmingham police threatening with arrest for a ''hate crime'',two Christian ministers who were passing out pamphlets in a predominantly Islamic neighborhood. Their obviously ''criminal''activity had the cops warning:''come back here again and you will be beaten''[not by the cops, but by ''them''].
Obviously, the scarf in question was not even a keffiyeh. And,it has been accurately noted, that individuals have used the device for protection purposes, especially military for many decades among desert soldiers of all nationalities. Yet there is no doubt that such garmets, especially in the west among leftwingers, have comprised that attire which is known as ''terrorist chic''. This is,the wearing of a Che,Castro,Habash,Mao,PLO,or other garmet in order to create controversy. Indeed, the AK-47 mounted HEZBOLLAH icon is a college favorite, although its wearers know not of whom they advertise for.Obviously, hearing ''peace in the Middle East''from those who wear shirts bearing the worlds most ubiqitous automatic weapon is strange,to say the least.

Thank you, Lorraine Ali for an insightful and well written critique of the right wing blogger insanity. Dunkin Donuts has clearly done the wrong thing by caving to these extremists. Ignorance and bigotry should be called what it is and denounced, not catered to.

For some years, the wearing of the keffiyeh has been almost ubiquitous amongst British soldiers, who now, almost exclusively, refer to them as shemaghs.[citation needed] Their use by some units and formations of the military and police forces of the former British Empire and subsequent Commonwealth dates back to before the Second World War.[citation needed] Because of its utility it was adopted by the Palestine Police Force, the Trans Jordan Frontier Force, the Sudan Defence Force, the Arab Legion, the Libyan Arab Force, the Long Range Desert Group, the Special Air Service and Popski's Private Army, amongst others, who wore them while operating in North Africa.[citation needed] After the war, their use by the Army continued with the keffiyeh being worn in both desert and temperate environments in theatres such as Dhofar.[citation needed] Australian Army forces have also used the shemagh since the Vietnam War, and extensively during Iraq and Afghanistan, particularly by Australian Special Forces units. Since the beginning of the War on Terror, these keffiyeh, usually cotton and in military olive drab or khaki with black stitching, have been adopted by US and troops as well.[citation needed] Their practicality in an arid environment, as in Iraq, explains their constant popularity with soldiers. Soldiers often wear the keffiyeh folded in half into a triangle and wrapped around the face, with the halfway point being placed over the mouth and nose, sometimes coupled with goggles, to keep sand out of the face.

Apparently Racheal Ray isn't the only one with her head on the chopping block...
Dutch Jewish group slams image of Anne Frank wearing kaffiyeh

A Dutch Jewish organization last week condemned the distribution of a postcard showing a manipulated image (right) of Anne Frank wearing a Palestinian kaffiyeh, calling it "a tasteless falsification of history." The company that published the postcard described it as "an idyllic image of peace."

The Hague-based Centre For Information and Documentation on Israel (CIDI) called on cinemas, cafes and other businesses to ban the postcard, which has been distributed for the past two weeks free of charge across the Netherlands by T-shirt and postcard maker Boomerang.

"In Holland, Anne Frank is a distinct symbol of the Holocaust and persecution," CIDI's public relations coordinator, Tuvit Shlomi, told Haaretz. "The red-and-white kaffiyeh symbolizes Palestinian resistance to the Israeli occupation. We find this link offensive, false and unacceptable."

In a press release about the postcard, CIDI said the image suggested the Palestinians were persecuted like the Jews during World War II. "Israel and the Palestinians are engaged in a conflict. The Palestinians are not persecuted, there are no extermination camps and there is no genocide," CIDI wrote.

Boomerang's chief editor, Pascale Bosboom, told Haaretz that the artist responsible for the image - who is known only as T. - combined the two symbols "to create an idealistic image in which both states exist alongside one another in peace."

In its official announcement, Boomerang said it agrees with CIDI that the historical connection CIDI mentioned "must not be made." Boomerang, the statement said, recognizes that the fate of the Jews in the Netherlands during World War II is nothing like that of the Palestinians.

Netherlands Merchant Puts Anne Frank in a Arfat Kaffiyeh
    Sick, sick, sick.

Boomerang, a popular Dutch merchant of T-shirts, greeting cards, and other items, is now selling an image of Anne Frank wearing the symbol of Palestinian terrorism: Boomerang.nl - Werk - ???Banned Frank??? by T. Also below is an E-card image of Anne Frank in a kaffiyeh that can be sent online: http://www.boomerang.nl/werk/redactie/anne-rocks/

    Anne rocks!

    'Banned Frank' by T.

How dare they make a comparison to the fate of Ann Frank to that of the entire Palestinian nation. HOW DARE THEY! Perhaps the truth hurts? Perhaps there IS a comparison??
Diversion has always been a tactic used by the zionists. Diversion to take attention away from the real problems??? The siege on Gaza is not upsetting to them, the murders of Palestinian civilians is not upsetting to them???. BUT all flags are raised when someone dares to make a comparison of zionism to nazism??? THAT IS A NO NO! says desert peace

I can understand why DD does not want to enter into a controversy and pulled the ad. They are not in the business of politics or ideology. Unfortunately, that has become the controversy. The real problem here is the ignorance (or parochial mean-ness) of political commentators who saw meaning in Rachael's scarf. When I tried to board a plane at Israel's Eilat airport with a keffiyeh (which my wife had purchased across the border in Acaba, to use as a scarf during a sandstorm), the twenty-something security guard froze and put us through the ringer about why we had been to Jordan (with whom Israel has a peace treaty) and why we did not buy a hat instead! Ah! The symbols of our prejudices.

I sick and tired of our constitutional rights to freedom of speech and expression is based on what ever someone does doesnot like. Are we so afraid of a group of people that disagree with us that we have to run and hide. That is not bad enough we even apologize. I see women and men wearing a scarf or two. People wear all kinds of scarfs. We were at one time a melting pot for all different cultures. We are not so separated
buy different so called peoples rights group. That our freedoms that were guaranteed by the Bill of rights is slowing eruding away. We need to stand up as a group of concerned citizens and say enough is enough..
Will not happen though. Our government does not represent the average blue collar worker anymore. Only those people who have money to manipulate the system.

Mirth - A short history lesson for you on the swastika. The swastiak was first used in Neolithic India . The symbol has an ancient history in Europe, appearing on artifacts from pre-Christian European cultures. In antiquity, the swastika was used extensively by the Indo-Aryans, Persians, Hittites, Celts and Greeks, among others. In particular, the swastika is a sacred symbol in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Mithraism, religions with a total of more than a billion adherents worldwide, making the swastika ubiquitous in both historical and contemporary society. The symbol was introduced to Southeast Asia by Hindu kings and remains an integral part of Balinese Hinduism to this day, and it is a common sight in Indonesia. It is also used by several Native American cultures.

Learn facts before promoting more prejudice Mirth. Then you too can make the world a better place.
