The real reason that scarf was a problem is because the person who pointed it out is RACIST and this is the same reason people are saying bad things about Obama because of what his pastor said. How do these two go hand in hand? Think about this a couple of years ago a lot of priest were in the news becuase of molesting little boys. It was well over 25 priest who were found to have done these acts to little boys. Does this mean that every Catholic is a pedophile? Because the argument for the scarf is that all people who wear those scarfs are terrorist and for Obama they said since he was under Pastor Wright he had to harbor the same ideas. SO ARE ALL YOU CATHOLICS PEDOPHILES? If not, then why put all people who wear scarves as terrorist and just because his pastor said it doesn't mean Obama believes it.

What is your point? You have a decided prejudice against Dunkin' Donuts first of all. I agree with Geller. It sure looked liked Arafat's ass-rag to me, so when in doubt, take it out....of circulation. You can always make another commercial, but first impressions are hard to erase. Have you heard about the insanity over a cartoon from Denmark? Six killed today in front of the Danish Embassy. Go to Krispy Kreme and stuff your hole.

The kaffiyeh isn't the problem, it's the black and white checkerboard pattern on it that's controversial. That's the pattern that Arafat wore, so people are going to associate a black and white checkerboarded kaffiyeh with Arafat. There's no infringement on freedom of speech here. The government didn???t come in and censor anything. DD could've chosen to keep the advertisement with the pic if they wished, but they chose to listen to complaints against the scarf (free speech again) rather than those supporting Rachael Ray???s wearing of the scarf (which is more free speech).

Yes, yes, not all people who wear the scarf with that pattern support Arafat and the goals of the PLO/PA. And not all people who wear clothing with the Confederate Flag support slavery. But if Rachael Ray had worn a scarf with a Confederate Flag pattern, and DD pulled it, would all of these people who are criticizing DD now have been as vocal? Doubtful.

I normally don???t go to DD, but I made a point of stopping there over the weekend, because I support their decision to pull the ad. But I don???t think that the number of people protesting OR supporting DD because of this fringe issue are going to make a dent in DD???s bottom line.

The coverage on this non-issue makes me sick. Sometimes a scarf is just a scarf! Over anyalizing every minute detail and absurd political correctness are killing this wonderful free nation with which we have been blessed. The principles of respecting differing opinions and developing a thick skin to deal with the harsh reality life can sometimes throw our way are definitely not being adhered to as adults, but are certainly not being taught to our children. Please, please, please...let us all use common sense and responsibility. Sometimes things are just as they seem on the surface...a black and white scarf to go with a spokesperson's outfit.

"Sometimes a scarf is just a scarf! "

Hmm... supporters of communist violence love Ghe Guevara shirts (they must really love a mass murderer who loved putting people against the wall and shooting them in cold blood). Supporters of racist groups love wearing "symbols", like white pointed hoods or certain armbands with lightning bolts or swastikas or Odin runes... racist gang members shave their eyebrows in certain patterns, or get specific tattoos you can see all sorts of NBA players sporting...

The Kaffiyeh is a racist symbol, just like any other racist symbol. To try to say otherwise is to demonstrate your own foolish ignorance. What makes the Kaffiyeh doubly disgusting is that it is used by morons who try to attack Israel, the only free state in the region, the only state where you can openly be of ANY religion you want or ANY sexuality you want without risk of your head being cut off by the police or religious hatemongers who run the Arab states.

If the ad somehow offended the Arab community it would have been pulled in a heartbeat, but since it is coming from the other direction it's wrong? I totally disagree, it's not wrong. If I was the decision maker I would have done the same thing without hesitation. From the slams on DnD's products I get the feeling the writer seems to favor Krisy Kreme, it's left me a bit confused on her intentions here.

Please, most of the comments listed below are narrow minded. What happened to a country that is free to wear and believe what they want. If there was no secret message behind the ad, DnD has nothing to be ashamed of and should have just released a statement stating so. There was no need to pull the ad. Not ever person that wears a scarf is out to get America.

shame on DD for caving to the right wing nutjobs...Malkin just wanted to get her name in the news and she succeeded...well actually she just succeeded in helping America realize what an idiot she is

  • Posted By: Melvis @ 06/02/2008 10:26:49 AM

Rachael Ray is good at 2 things, talking and selling... Herself. I'm sure she chose what she wore and is not stupid enough to try and stir up trouble, that would tarnish her image and damage her sales... Of herself. Also, I miss the days where we could say just about anything and not offend everyone over every little thing. Two words; Blazing Saddles

Fancy this - a journalist using our right of free speech to lend legitimacy to a group that espouses violence and an end to free speech. This is a classic tactic used by terrorists that is called social engineering. US beware - your media is for sale to the highest bidder. Don't be sheep. (Btw - I think the whole scarf incident was silly, but the media problem still remains)

  • Posted By: pskmap @ 06/02/2008 10:25:47 AM

pretty sad that right wing nujobs have nothing better to do with their time than go after Rachel Ray for wearing a scarf....GET A LIFE!!

  • Posted By: GustoMaybe @ 06/02/2008 10:23:31 AM

Oh and to the mental giants that said that DD shouldnt have caved...you obviously never owned a business or were part of a big corporation. If it affects 1 sale, then it gets taken out, especially when it could portray the 15th century fanatical dipshits in the Arab world that will wage jihad over a cartoon.

Keffiyahs are NOT worn by "artsy college students." They're worn by college students who support Arab terrorism, i.e. those who support various Anti-Israel and Anti-Western causes, such as Divestment from Israel. The author is trying to play it down by calling Malkin and other conservatives paranoid. However, people who wear an actual keffiyah, or attempt to wear something similar are in fact, deliberately showing solidarity with Arab terrorism

Yes, this "racism" is truly horrible. Let's stop it by bombing embassies and killing innocent people over a cartoon which, btw, is free speech - the same right that gives your column scourging a donut company (as you say, the Real Enemy). I would suggest that the real enemy are people like you.

If Ms Ray had decided to hawk Dunkin Donuts iced coffee dressed like she was in Saudi Arabia or any other Muslim country the religious intolerance and outcry calling for her death would have been tremendous. The hue and cry over a teacher naming a teddy bear after the prophet is a good example of the religious intolerance that Muslims display toward "infidels" on an almost daily basis. Yet when we point out about the questionable garb Ms Ray wears as promoting Islam in some sort of fasion, we are labeled as racists. The hypocrisy here is clear. We have to conform to Muslim wishes when talking about their religion or lifestyle, but they are free to denigrate other religions or society's as inferior to theirs. If you have a hard time believing that, just look at the problems Europe is facing right now because of Muslim intolerance and refusal to assimilate their host country's culture. We are sacrificing our heritage and our national identity as Europe is doing right now on an altar of popularity and politically correct ideology in deference to a religion and it's adherents that deserve no special dispensation. If Muslims wish to be treated fairly and equably then they must abjure the tennents of their sacred texts that preach the hatred and intolerance they accuse others of. And until this happens, modern societys will view them with suspicion and use history as a guideline to protect and preserve the heritage of their forefathers.

    • Posted By: mrss118 @ 06/02/2008 10:16:37 AM

Correct me if I'm wrong but what I'm hearing here is that it is not okay for Muslims to impose their eastern values onto us westerners yet it perfectly okay for western countries to impose their values on them. Interesting. Silly me I always thought we lived in a democracy. Go figure.

    • Posted By: mrss118 @ 06/02/2008 10:10:18 AM

Correct me if I'm wrong but what I'm hearing you say is that it not okay for others to dictate their Eastern values on us-yet,we should impose our Western values onto them. And I thought, we were all democratic countries Go figure.

You have grouped all Islam in with those whose intention is to cause death to the infidels, Please do your homework before publicly makins statements such as these.

      • Posted By: burbank @ 06/01/2008 12:52:43 AM

To: diveguy: Sir, I have done my homework. My statements stand. Might I suggest a little homework of your own. To start: 1) Londonistan, by Melanie Phillips. 2) The Sword of the Prophet, Islam-History, theology, impact on the world, by Serge Trifkovic. 3) Faith, reason, and The War Against Jihadism-A Call to Action, by George Weigel. 4) What Went Wrong-Western Impact and Middle Eastern Response, by Benard Lewis. These are just a few of the tomes that can help you understand the Islamic threat to western society a bit more clearly. Good luck with your research.

Without proof, these ignorant statements are nothing more than proof of what most posters are saying. You are pushing a racist agenda and trying to spread fear. You are nothing more than a McCarthy communist hack. Go away, America does not need the likes of you.

Did you forget we are at war? You are one of those types that probably said nothing bad should have been written about the Germans in 1944 because it wasnt all Germans, only a handful committing atrocities. Lets drop you off in downtown Bagdad and see what happens to you (heres a hint, you wont be getting an iced coffee)

ever been to "white house- black market ladies? bet you would find similar scarf, if not this one.some of these people need to look before they leap, and avoid hurting someone as nice as racheal.

The one question that people haven't brought up is WHY did Michelle Milkin look at the Dunkin Donuts ad and immediately see a kaffiyeh? Often times, when people see something that is ambiguous (at best) and leap to conclusions based on it, it hints at thier inner feelings - like a rorschach test. I think Michelle's reaction to the ad hints at ...i dunno. Racism? That might be going to far, but intollerance, or pushing a political agenda, or ignorance of the facts, sure. Her comments on the ad hint at this underlying, disturbing thing going on in Michelle's mind. It's a shame that a low-level anchor on Fox News, someone who should have little relevance on our politics or culture, has her 15 minutes in the spotlight. When Dunkin Donuts caves, it only rienforces people's negative attitudes instead of forcing them to confront them.
