Let the car makers start making diesel engines for cars in the USA. We can make diesel from other products. wake USA before it is too late.
Oil prices could hit $200 a barrel in the next few months. How the spike changes everything.
Let the car makers start making diesel engines for cars in the USA. We can make diesel from other products. wake USA before it is too late.
The "coming energy wars" will never happen because by then other sources of energy will long have been introduced. Hybrid and electric cars are already on the road, even a few solar ones have been tried.
The announcement by the United Nations Secretary-General that Saudi Arabia will increase oil production shows that Saudi Arabia knows that the USA can switch to several alternative fuels that would easily under-bid the current price of gasoline. But in the long run, the cost of extracting oil from deeper and deeper wells will catch up and make oil a totally impractical choice for fueling the majority of America's needs.

I would offer tax credits in the purchase of fuel efficient cars (over 28MPG). Also, tax credits to companies to swift employees to work from home. We already have tax credits for company employees who use public transportaion. This could cut our demand and keep prices in check for a short while. Many would say these tax cut would cost money, but we are salready ending our money to unfriendly nations.
There should be tax credits for Americans to buy fuel efficient cars (over 28 MPG). This could stimulate sales and reduce demand. Also, there are alot of people commuting. There are already tax credits for using public transportation to work. Why not have tax credits for employees to work from home.
I also can't see any real answers being offered as to why oil price has risen so sharply...rising demand in emerging markets has been happening for many years....it certainly hasn't grown 10 times this year...supply has been more or less constant...so why the spike in prices?
GREED.
How come we never read of Brazil's answer to energy probs? They run thier vehicles, power stations on SUGAR CANE ethanol. It has 4 x the octane of corn ethanol, which is expensive to produce, and is a failure. Its coz guys like Cheney [the REAL pres.] Bush and Co are in bed with the Saudi's and are stuffing thier pockets with cash. This is NOT the America our founding fathers wanted, with greed as the motivator, and lies, fear, misinformation as the tools. G. Washington must be spinning in his grave. The Iraq war was based on lies. Its about money and oil.
I wonder if UCLA's Ross bothered to mention that violence in Iraq is overwhelmingly due to a super-weak post war govt. and little to do with oil prices...I like the fact that Newsweek tries to give a more global view than other american papers, but need they see everything through revolutionary geopolitical war eyes?
I think that this is a window of opportunity to shake out the oil dependency. We should establish a medium term plan that allow us to substitute oil usage for something else, like hydrogen. We did the worst of sins when we throw away the research on techs other than oil-dependant. This may be the last chance to change for good. Even better, it can give us the best political tools to deal with those ego maniac who now have the power just because we are paying sharper for their oil.
People and companies have ideas about alternative energy and Gov't and Environmental Groups just get in the way. Example: Utah is trying to develop the oil shale industry (there is more oil in oil shale in Utah, Colorado and Wyoming than the Arabs have oil) but Congress is blocking it. Why? They are beholding to environmentalists. In the first place, if you have ever seen a sage brush desert, how much worse could you make it? But really, Utah wants to explore how to do it "environmentally correct". The US has huge coal reserves but the Enviro's don't like coal. In the short term we should use our coal, in the long term learn how to clean it up or develop coal to oil plants. Bush just list the Polar Bear as a "protected" species. Next step will pretty much shut down Alaska as far as oil exploration. Why? Who know, because according to the Gov of Alaska the Polar Bear has been making a comeback for 20 years. But the Environmentalists wanted it. Many more cases of where we could drill for oil but are prevented by Govt and Environmentalists. Much of the electricity in the Western states is provided by Dams and the Enviro's want to breach all the dams. We need the dams for farming also but as farm as Enviro's are concerned a fish is more important than people. For long term solutions, we need to be building Nuclear, working hard on alternate fuel cars like fuel cells, etc., wind power, solar, ways to use coal and others. The big problem is that the Govt doesn't seem to get the message. We just keep sending money to the Arabs. It's not like this is a big surprise, I think this happened to Jimmy Carter too. And both parties are equally at fault. It just seems weird that we end up no more prepared now than we were 30-40 years ago when the first oil embargo from the Arabs hit. Maybe if we don't go broke and weather this we will be prepared for the 3rd energy crisis.

I can't stand the bitching and moaning about our government not doing anything to promote alternative fuels because Americans completely fail to realize that it is the multi-trillion dollar oil and gas industry allied by supporting industries that have lobbied year after year for dragging out the "push" for new alternatives. They are running and profiting from the most successful industry this planet has ever known, why would they want anything to change????? Throughout history big industry has manipulated markets, congress and consumers to keep their stranglehold: does anybody see any good old fashioned competition out their in the Oil and Gas industry??? Of course not....................
Conservatives don't care if we pollute the world or kill off every known species on the planet as long as they can drive what they want, when they want and for a penny. And if prices go up it's because of Liberals and their silly little policies of wanting to address conservation instead of just simply increase supply.
Conservatives are like spoiled little school children that haven't learned how to play in the same sandbox and prefer to blame everybody else for their woes instead of looking at their own "me, me, me" mentality.
Conservatives want smaller government and less regulation yet don't have a clue about how to solve the ills of the nation except to revert back to a hundred years ago when labor barrons and sweat shops made our society "great" according to their "Heritage" mentality.
Why do conservatives give such lip service to Entitlement when their basic philosophy of "Heritage" is a lame argument for Entitlement. Conservatives feel Entitled to wealth just a working stiff feels entitled to a descent wage and reasonable Health Care.
Yes, conservatives are their own worse enemy: the more they want to stay entrenched in their "Heritage" they more they look like obstructionists to human evolution in protecting our global resouces such as animals and finding ways to spread the wealth for all of mankind.
Oh, last comment: I'd like to see the conservatives come up with a better group of informed, educated and intelligent people, worldwide, that can offer a competing argument for global warming. It comes down to simple logic: do you believe a political group with obvious interests, or, do you believe a worldwide consortium of scientists who have the tools and intellect to figure out what's going on.
I know who I'm putting my money on..................
You blame the conservatives. You are full of crap. The problem with America is that we have forgotten our Constitution, and what the founding father's desired, under the inspiration of God to establish. An American prophet told us that this land(America) would be protected from all other nations as long as the people worshipped the God of this land, who is the Lord Jesus Christ. We have forgotten God, are more interested in immorality and self pleasure and entertainment, and have forgotten who is really in control of our destiny. We give lip service to Him after the 2001 9/11 attack, but are more for "freedom of expression" and rights, than what is ACTUALLY what God wants. We need to wake up! before it is too late!
The President puts his hand on the Bible and swears to uphold the Constitution, not the other way around. You're a freak insinuating that 9/11 has something to do with Americans not worshipping God. I for one am very awake to the implications of placing my head between two book ends and blindly putting my energy, faith, and personal constitution into a myth.
Regionalization is not necessarily a bad thing; if America had not bought into cheap labor overseas, we would still be making and purchasing goods, if not locally, then at least within the country. Life was harder back when we had to make everything ourselves, but I think it was better. (We did not have to worry about lead content in China-made toys, for one thing.) We made things to last, because then we would not have to make them again for years. We took pride in our handiwork; we took care of our land and property, so it would be there for future generations. We raised our children to respect the land, and everything that came out of it. People cared about people! Has the Age of Industrialization really changed everything for the better? In my humble opinion, if regionalization can be accomplished peacefully (without the looming threat of anarchy that seems very possible) America will be much the better for it.
The answer has always been simple - we just don't like it. As a people, Americans thrive on not being told we have limited options, so we resist. The #1 solution that resolves this problem is that America needs to embrace the bicycle - NOT as just a good sport or for fun casual riding with the family, but to get from one place to another. Naturally we don't need to ride the bicycle 100 miles, but if Americans generally rode bicycles for almost all trips within 1 mile from their house only on days that it is not raining or below 40 degrees F, we would solve America's 3 biggest problems - of course energy, then emissions and oh yeah - our poor health due to laziness.
Many people may point to America's highways and correctly say that they would not be safe for bicycles, but countries with 4 and 5 times our population have figured out how to make it work. I put our cleverness at the top of the heap so IF WE WANTED TO, we could set this country up to use half as much oil and let the Arabs start drinking the other half of what they are selling us. They are in the best possible situation - they are making astronomical fortunes off of something they have no use for whatsoever.
China is a great example of how integrated the bicycle is as a means of transportation, but Amsterdam would serve as a fantastic example of how to set up a city so that bicycles are given proper respect on the road. If these countries can come up with good solutions - why can't we? The answer - drum roll - extremely bad politicians at all levels of government. All politicians are consumed with greed - they think only of the people looking back at them in a mirror. When America elects a new type of politician - a non lawyer politician, things will improve. No, Hillary, Obama nor McCain will not work to solve the problem. If anything they will make it worse.

Western Ideals like "the environment "? Well this confuses me, it definitely is not an ideal followed out here in the U.S. of A. Developing countries do more than the US to save the environment. Neither the government out here nor the citizens give a damn about environment, else how could you justify the F series being the best seller in the country for 20 long years. People are price concious (when it comes to gas and hybird vehicles) but definitely not environmental concious.
Furthermore, the environment is hardly a vague abstraction - nothing you can name has a greater impact on our lives.
Nature has been unable to stop the human species; no predator or disease has been able wipe us out. No environment is too harsh for us to live in. We have overcome every natural obstacle to make ourselves safe and comfy (at least, the more fortunate among us.)
Can we even focus our eyes on the threat in the mirror? Will we finally accept that our huge success in conquering nature IS the greatest threat of all? We're running short (not out) of oil - will we seize this opportunity to switch to renewable energy sources? Or will we only become ever more frantic to lay claim to the oil that remains?
When the once-plentiful (and often-eaten) Passenger Pigeons began to disappear, it merely triggered an obscene frenzy of hunting in a desperate effort to lay claim to the birds that remained. The flocks that once literally darkened the sky for days at a time vanished entirely, and today they are extinct. Learn from this folks!
