What if we ran plug-in hybrids on Bio-diesel and Ethanol? That would go very far on cutting trips to the gas station (cleaner and cheaper) as well as demand for gas (no oil dependence).

Ethanol is not the way to go. The farmers could never hope to grow even close to enough for the cars in this country plus food. Hydrogen or straight electric is pretty much the only option left. Though I have heard of some interesting developments with using compressed air for the engines. Its actually quite impressive the power and range their gettin out of these compressed air engines now
I'm not sure that I understand why we can't restict the flow of food and medical innovations / supplies in order to drive down the cost of all imports. I also believe that it may be time to export the nuetron bomb and some of those bio weapons stored at Anniston Army Depot. What would we miss most, the camels?
Yes, there is global warming, it fits into the energy loss of propulsion systems, etc. If we can use all energy consumed, then global warming would be drastically reduced. Every time a car is started, heat is lost into the environment, open a door, heat is lost, manufacturing processes? More heat loss. Add it up, that is a lot of energy, every second. Heat is energy!
Want the truth about what is going on? It has nothing to do with shortage and everything to do with greedy investors and a government willing to stand by and let it happen. Investors are spreading panic inspiring headlines like one on this site tonight, "The Coming Energy Wars - Oil prices could hit $200 a barrel in the next few months. How the spike changes everything."
People need to read the Ed Wallace articles about what is really going on. Quoted from an article by Ed Wallace published May 19th: "A week ago Goldman Sachs issued a new investor note, suggesting that somewhere between six months to two years, the price of oil could go into a "super spike" and prices jump as high as $200 per barrel. It became the major story of the night. Ignored in the reporting frenzy was that many legitimate and well-respected oil analysts dismissed Goldman Sachs??? prediction as groundless."
I hope some of you will read the rest of his articles and get as angry as I am. It's time to put a stop to lining these investor???s pockets at our expense!

Thank you ever so much kaptex! I will pass this info along! I did not know about this article, and I have real estste links out the yahoo. Anger can not encapsulate what me and EVERY US citizen is feeling now- because of the BLATANT DECEPTION of our own government..I will reiterate-in Revelations, it speaks of this-and the United Nations will have full control of the world shortly....just a matter of time.
I think we should do steps like the following:
1) Stop subsidizing oil companies. Invest that money into renewable resources. Saying that you are going to subsidize users of oil only acts as guaranteed subsidization of oil companies.
2) Start investing in nuclear plants again, including fusion.. This will NOT solve the problem over-night and will take years for the first plants to come on line, but it will certainly help in the future. Yes, there are protesters against nuclear power, but many people have supposedly tracked down their funding to the oil companies. The US has many companies which are teaching and helping other countries in building new plants. We have the know-how.
3) Have the government SERIOUSLY invest in renewable resources (solar, wind, hydro, nuclear, geothermal).
4) Make it mandatory that all houses and buildings have solar collectors and windmills/turbines. The rebates for these should be increased.
5) I don't know if there is any way that the government can tell any company that has bought patents for new technologies that they must allow the technology to be used, but capitalism allows companies to do just that and I feel such things should be made eminent domain.
6) Invest heavily into getting better batteries into cars. If you have a good battery in your car, then most driving you do can be done just on the battery.
7) What type of after-purchase modifications to cars can be main-streamed to increase gas performance? Would you pay $500 or $1000 if you knew your car would double in mileage? If you were able to always plug in a car to charge the battery at night instead of using oil?
8) Stop the foolish hydrogen engine promise. It is much too far away and I expect will be ALWAYS 10 years away. It is a gimmick to have us stay with the gasoline cars hoping for the eventual change.
9) Do not allow food to be used for energy. The price of food is already going up due to transportation costs, but now farmers are selling what they grow for energy. That said, if we do allow food to be sold as fuel, we are currently paying farmers to not plant where we should make sure that all farms are growing if only to ensure that there is food for the masses.
10) I personally would be for taxing oil IF AND ONLY IF the money would definitely be invested DIRECTLY into renewable resources.
The reason we are in this situation is that, world-wide, people and countries need more energy and they already have the infrastructure to use oil. Therefore, everyone is going after a finite amount of available oil. That drives up the cost. There is a constant excuse that whatever we do today will not solve the problem for 5-10 years or more. Yes, this is true, but if we invested in other technologies 20 years ago, where would we be? The French in vested in nuclear power and now have a large amount of their energy NOT coming from oil.
If we allow more oil to be drilled in the US, it will only be sold on the world market. I would not expect our prices to go down, just for the oil companies to sell more barrels and make more money. That said, sure, allow safer drilling and build more refineries, but DO NOT rely on that which I fear would happen.
And, yes, there is a global warming crisis, so for those who say just make and process more oil and forget about the environment, you are hopelessly confused, or brainwashed by the oil companies.
True Andy-But HOW do we get people to ACT??and ACT NOW??!! To reverse this CYCLE OF SLAVERY? No I am Not speaking about the black/african/ethnic population>>I am speaking of the AMERICAN WORKING CLASS AS A WHOLE UNIT- HOW?? How do you present the concept of "Breaking the Cycle" to make them do a "Chicken - Neck" so to speak, and excuse the pun....plus-there are some that do not like chicken. LOL! A six pack-whatever....we are all human, we like what we like- but the POINT IS>>>>We ALL MUST WRITE TO OUR CONGRESSMAN!!!!!! Plain and simple. Take 5-9 minutes out of our day and WRITE! If we all wrote in with our disgust, angst and FURY...they would HAVE to address the CRISIS, of the "Make-Believe OIL SHORTAGE".....Last time you went to Wal-Mart--->>The shelves were FULLof Quarts of OIL>>> just an observation. LMAO!!
There are huge, full oil tankers parked in foreign and international waters around the U.S., just waiting for the price of oil to go up - they are currently experiencing "delivery problems". Iran is leasing tankers to hold a mountain of surplus oil. Venezuela can't get rid of their oil since they put an embargo on the U.S. Meanwhile demand is crashing in Europe and the U.S. Subsidies are being cut throughout Asia. Massive investment speculation occurring on oil futures. It's all a sham people.
you know what is sad. I have almost completed the design of a new hydro style power plant that has the ability to make as much power as the most powerful nucleur power plants, and is completely green and non damaging to the environment. But is the government interested in looking at my technology? NO! Because I am not a big corporation yet, they couldn't care less. I am presently looking for just a little bit of help figuring out some flow numbers. Due to lack of funding, I cannot get the last calculating software i need to crunch some numbers. If anyone out there, knows how to calculate water flow based on pipe diameters and PSI readings, please stop on by my website at www.enerseapower.com and drop me a line. I would appreciate it. Though I encourage all others to take a look too if your interested. Might suprise you to see how possible it really is to take care of our energy problems within just a few years if the government would only take heed.
Give me the data, I will send the answer
35' diameter pipe. I need the numbers for 2 PSI readings. the first is 237 PSI and the second is 326 PSI. Again what would the GPM be for a pipe this size at these two PSI readings? Thanks for the help!

The real reason, of $200 a barrel, is that demand is higher than the offert. Forget about not enough refineries and other simplistic explanations. Being oil a finite product, the price will tend to go higher with time and population increment. Even if new reserves are discovered. The good news, is that finally, reason will prevail ( the cost of energy will help) and people and the planet will go greener. ( Detroit will surely listen) New industries will rise, and oil industries will be smaller and join the obsolet industries of the past. This process will be slow of course, maybe 15 years or more, but is irreversible.
There is no question, that developed nations will be fare better as they are more prepared and have the knowledge and money to evolve and change faster. The monopoly of oil will go the way all monopolies have gone. So do not be sad America, rejoice, jump to all the opportunities that arise from the changes in the way of life. Eventually you will be better and more prosperous.
In Venezuela , there will be a lot lot of bread for today, maybe hunger for tomorrow.
Excuse the grammar

oh yeah- And the SUGAR idea is SWEET-But what will it take to make our GREEDY Government BITE??!!
Teedoff I agree with you all the way.
Its time to do something and get these sheeple to get thier heads out of thier arses. Yes I am talking to 85% of the american people. WAKe THE HELL UP! ALL YOU SEEM TO CARE ABOUT IS FRIDAY, A PAYCHECK AND A SIX PACK. Dont you sheeple care about what your kids are going to have to live with.
Check Gull Island on google---all the oil we need for the next 200 YEARS and still we build no refineries does anyone ask WHY HELL NO I KNOW WHY You can too if you just take a little time to do some research. Get off your lazy arses and find out. If more people know then we just may have a chance to change things before its too late
Thank you , My Precious Hoser! I am Female, by the way-We are all so ""SHEPARDED ALONG""/sheep following WHOEVER>WHATEVER....we rae oblivious to the OBVIOUS! A bit scary. Brainwashing...the AMerican Public is too Dee-ammed Luh-HAZY to do Jack Shmak. I am a single mom, and if I were not-believe me-I'd be on YOUTUBE, a podium somewhere stating the obvious....but I don't wanna get Wacked. ***I just think that if we all set a few days aside each week to NOT buy gas and NOT BUY INTO THE GOV'T AND THE RICH MAKING MONEY off of the people who struggle...we would/could be a bigger and better nation. I KNOW it. All it would take is EVERYONE WRITING TO CONGRESS, MAKE OUR STEEENKIN GOV"T DO SOMETHING. They could-but WHy? they would LOSE $$$$$$$. WRITE TO YOUR CONGRESSMAEN PEOPLE!
Well, Hoser, there is a cycle to societies, from slavery, to free people, to apathy, then back to slavery. We have as a nation become apathetic, the time to act is now, if we are to reverse the cycle. A chicken in every pot is a fine thing as long as everyone earns their own chicken!
Hey abctechnologies, that is good food for thought. Have you considered using sugsr beats as a source? Or at one time raising wheat in northern climates was out of the question, so winter wheat was hybrided, why can't biogenetic engineering come up with a sugar cane for northern climates? Or do we really need ethanol, wouldn't HHO, Brown's gas work, it is made from water and the byproduct is water. There are many solutions to the problem of Peak oil, just have to think outside of the box!!
As some here have proposed, our country needs to move towards the development of sound nucler energy production. For the longterm sustainability of our way of life, or even close to it, at present and increasing population levels, there really is no other choice... other than a (very) drastic reduction in population levels (pick your scenario). The harnessing of fusion technology would be best, but until then a plan for disposal/storage of fissionable materials is a caveat (but European countries do it), as well as increased incidence of weapon propliferation as other countries gain hold of the technology. Alternative energies such as solar, wind, hydro and such are good choices for specific applications and should be used where reasonably applicable but cannot provide the energy required for the whole of industry and general consumption. The use of food for fuel has troublesome aspects regarding supply (and using grain is not as efficient as using sugarcane, but that would put $$ in countries south of our border and not in American companies who donate to political parties). Fossil fuels (coal, oil, gas) are finite resources. They will run out eventually. Period. They do not replenish in short geological time periods. Peak oil is here or imminent. I'm very interested in what knowlege and technologies may result from the operation of the new European supercollider. Ultimately the harnessing of fusion reactions is the sole hope the longevity of the human race. I hope I'm wrong, but also planning on stocking up and moving out someplace to weather the drastic population reduction.
The real reason that prices are out of our (US) control is that we have not built a new refinery in over 30 years. We are also not allowing US oil companies expand drilling for oil within the US. The demand for oil and gas has increased significantly over that time. Our politicians seem to have no problem with us being taxed for those things, they will not take action needed that may help bring down gas and oil prices. They could do this by eliminating those taxes, immediately building new refineries, immediately allowing more drilling for oil, while at the same time investing in our future by investing more in technoligical research to make more energy efficient vehicles and etc. This would help us to become less energy dependent on foreign oil companies and gradually get us to a point where we use less oil due to technological advances. What exactly have our politicians been doing over the last several years ? Coming up with a plan to help get us out of this mess does not really seem that difficult, why are none of them making this kind of recommendations? They say that eliminating those taxes will not make a difference (where is that money going anyway ??) They continue to point the finger at big oil companies despite their lack of a plan. Our Members of Congress and Senators need to get busy taking care of the peoples, and if they can't do that, we need to elect new members who will.
Randyh, glad to see that someone else understands what's going on. To answer the question of what have our politicians been doing for the last 30 years? Accepting campaign contributions (bribes) from the oil companies to keep us in the position we are in today. Bent over a barrel, excuse the pun.
so tell me who is "support smarter green initiatives (wind and solar credits rather than ethanol boondoggles) and stop pandering to voters with subsidies and gas-tax cuts that ignore the new reality" going to put gas in my gas tank. We should have drill anwr and the east/west coasts10 years ago. think of that the next time you fill your tank #%$& Libs.
Ok, I'll be the liberal. How is it my fault that a multi-billion dollar industry is Enron-ing the United States. Are you afraid Cheney will shoot you? Relax. Liberals didn't cause the gas crisis, peak supply being caught by demand growth+market volatility/fixing/cartels did that. We can't drill our way out of the problem. The pro-nuke crowd have one of the best arguments, and other sources/storage methods that approach gasoline fueled utility in cars is the path ahead, besides we can innovate and export again. Liberals just want to unfork what you conservatives have terribly mismanaged. You will see the market forces come November, when the GOP joins the Whigs on the ashheap of American political movements.
Right! ENRONed! And too all those whining about not drilling in
America, I don't know where you get your information but no significant amount of the untapped American reserves contain "Sweet Crude" and you need that to make gasoline. American reserve's like what is coming out of Alaska now contains a grade used for making fuel oil to drive power plants and heat homes. if we tapped those reserves you would watch the oil companies sell it to China who's industry is currently powered mostly by fuel oil.
The Energy companies will get even richer and these frighted people will not even remember this conversation ever took place.
I can't help but wonder how many of these respondents are complete idiots who's advice should be ignored completely.

I DO NOT believe that Alaske or America is TAPPED OUT of oil. The oil companies WANT us to believe that...and what it boils down to is this: We, as AMERICANS have been BRAINWASHED!!! We all sit complacently by as our US Gov't sneaks away our Constitutional Rights, Raises gas prices>which started after 911, and got worse with Hurricane Katrina being anothe EXCUSE for Slapping our Faces, THEN, Rita, Then the Domino effect. A few months back Bush gave a speech and was asked if he knew what the price per GALLON of GAS was-He did not have clue!!!!!!!????? BS! His Financial PORTFOLIO IS mostly OIL!!!!! We as Americans need to DO SOMETHING. If a whole country of people will go against the leaders over food prices-what is wrong with US??!! Is it fear of retaliation? Maybe-Laziness? Probably. BRAINWASHED?? YES-DEFINITELY! The government Senaks things in on us-like LAWS, Gas/OIL prices, Tales of WAR.
God IS coming-and it is right around the corner. Read the Bible and the book of Revelation....Even if you DO NOT believe in GOD....He spells it all out right there in black and white.
**STOP the Fascism/Communism in our United States! Plan for what's left of our future.
**When is the last time a member of a median class American could PURCHASE A HOTEL? The Indians own 85% hotels in US. Aren't we LUCKY to be Americans.
