gee do you think $200 a barrel will get the idiot dems to allow our own oil companies to explore, drill and refine our own vast oil fields? Or are they going to just let our economy to continue to tank? which they seem to take pride in doing.

One big factor not discussed is the efficiency of propulsion systems. The piston and rotor engines are dinosaurs at best, making use of no more that 30% of fuel consumed by USDOE estimates, that equates to a 70% efficiency loss, minimum. The biggest loss is low level heat, it can be recovered to do work, but there needs to be some sort of incentive to invest in these developments. According to my calculations, a 50% recovery of low level heat loss, implemented uniformly, would cut oil consumption by about 25%, thus reducing the market price to around 1/3rd to half of current prices. I have contacted one of my Senators, and he is very interested in this concept, but the government employee he asked me to contact doesn't like to return voicemail, amazing!
The old piston engine is pretty inefficient but it is still cheap to produce. If you think you can squeeze another nickel out of it the automakers would kill for the information. Most have large engineering staffs working on getting the most out of gallonof gas. The car maker that can report 50 mpg out of an inexpensive mass producable vehicle knows they would be the #1 automaker fairly quickly.
After reading this story, the other side of the coin comes into view. Imagine America once again being a producer of goods and services instead of importing from other countries which help their economy but not our own. That includes tapping into our vast sources of energy supplies. We can have a glowing future where other countries actions will have little or no effect on our industry and lifestyle. America again will take it's place as a world leader instead of being being viewed as just one of the boys. He who laughts last will be America.
in california, a lot of gas stations already charged a hefty $4.25 a gallon. By the time, Bush and Dick leave the office, the price of gas would probably around $5 a gallon. The oil executives are laughing at the politicians because they know that the politicians cannot do anything about their excessive profits from oil.

it's about time to switch into the next transportation technology. the us car makers need to compete in fuel cell technology. IF they do, gas prices will eventully fall as we lessen our dependence on oil, seeling these advanced cars worldwide. we'll once again be leaders in the automotive race. trucks need to get off the road. look into the railroads as a highpay off stock.
If our politicians have voted down drilling in Anwar, again, then thats the same as saying they don't care. I'll say it again, we need to go green, but going green is not going to happen overnight. It is going to take years. We will continue to use oil even as we taper off its use and change over to fuel cell, mass transit or whatever. We will never completly end it's use in our lifetime. It is still the cheapest form of energy, and is necessary for the petrochemical industry. Want an Ipod? The case it is in is from oil. Tennis shoes? Soles are from oil. It is time to kill off the SUV, but hybrids still require gas. We will need oil for quite a while. And we will have to sacrifice, which means drilling where it is not popular, like Anwar.
What we are seeing now is the direct result of DICK Cheney and his secret energy policy meetings back in 2001. This whole oil situation has been carefully orchestrated and planned out. Does ANYBODY really trust the oil companies to tell us how much oil there really is? It is in there financial interest to have a perceived shortage as it keeps prices high.
I totally agree with you. I suspect that george and dick made a campaign promise to get the price of gas to 4 bucks by the time they left office. Maybe the next president will have a spine and will hit the big oil companies with price gouging charges and the top exects of big oil might just go to jail for price fixing.
We are being gamed by two cartels and an artificial market. Deregulation opens the thieves door. There are funds making a daily killing because they have enough mass in cash to place bets that change the table more than the dealt cards. It is not a straight game.
Nationalization is a great idea, because the Federal Government does so many things well... give me a while, I am sure I can think of some example (see social security, welfare, medicare, FEMA,Internal Revenue Code, air travel).
AMEN!!!!
To "suprize"....There isn't enough oil in ANWR to supply the US for more than a year or two. Look it up. It's a fact. Quit trying to tie all of this on a political party or environmentalists. The "big 3" did not develop vehicles. Japanese companies did b/c Japan imports 100% of their oil. Now, American companies are playing catchup with hybrid technology. They deserve to go under according to the free market. if you fail to make a product the public wants (or will want in the long run), then you are not competitive. That's the price of playing. If you have a problem with environmentalists, then just say so and quit making up your own facts.
China and India have nothing to do with the price of oil, The reason we have such high prices is that george is not investigating price gouging and he is also allowing speculators to run wild. If we ever get a president with a spine, who will say he is investigating big oil for price gouging, then you will see the cost of oil plunge down to 40 dollars or less and the price at the pump fall to 1.30 a gallon.
The problem is the our country is overweight, lots of fast food joints popped up in 5 years than ever, They need suvs ,dont fit in small cars, The $200.00 will help all these fatsos to starve so than tey will fit in a honda civic thereby reducing weight and saving fuel, its Win Win situation. SUVS are the problem????
I love your comment! So saguine and on the mark!
Two years ago, I believe it was the PEW Charitable Trust (and anyone can correct me if I'm wrong), conducted a survey in the U.S. asking people what would happen if the price of fossil fuels increased and how it would change their lives. Most answered by saying they would drive less, take public transit, or commute with other's to their jobs. The majority were white Americans living in the suburbs. The researchers quickly pointed out if the price of fossil fuel increased greatly, there would be no job to go to. Food would become scarce, resources limited, our ability to contain civility would be curtailed, and eventually millions could perish. Could these predictions be far off? I would like to see the national press speak more candidly about the theory of Peak Oil and the implications that our capacity to produce oil has peaked and is on the down slope - speculative markets, the weak dollar, governments inadequate interventions, Big Oils lack of vision by taking care of it's shareholders and turning a blind eye on the problem, etc. etc. really all seem to ignore what a number of economists and scientists have been telling us for years; we are running out of the stuff. With all the growing pains of conservation and driving more fuel efficient cars, I feel sorry for my children and their children who will experience unprecedented worldwide conflicts and desperation to survive. Not to sound so pessimistic, but realistically I think we are still at the beginning of some very dark times. Literally. Americans need to get their heads out of the sand and realize what lays ahead; use the democratic process to pressure the people in power to do something about energy policies, push big oil to invest in other energy sources, and start to re prioritize our priorities. We don't have a minute to lose.

Finally maybe the democrats understand why Iraq, and the long term wisdom of the Republican planners
girl genius...this is a misnomer if I ever saw one. the issue is not grabbing more oil by force, a non-renewable source of fuel and energy but in conserving and shifting to renewable fuels and energy. Every heard of peak oil genius? We've past it and fighting wars to grab what we can of a non-renewable fuel and energy source will only help us so long. At some point this source will run out and then what? We need to change our lifestyle and drastically start shifting to renewable fuel and energy sources. This is the only way to get to a sustainable way of living. Your suggestion just delays an apocalypse!
Gimme a break! there is no apocalypse on the horizon! The energy reserves that are not developed alone in the US would fuel our nation for another hundred years or so. Who alive today posting is going to care then? By that time also, the world will awake to techological advances spurred by this contrived crisis and start producing energy that is efficient (wind farms for example) and cost effective. The USA will go on ad infinitum despite this blip in history.

I totally disagree. There is enough OIL all over. The ratio at which gas price increases to the deman increase from India/China is totally disproportionate. This article is only a lie to scare people into accepting 200$ gas and to put blame on someone else. This is pure speculation. Just like anytime in history , Capitalism has failed the Americans. Capitalists have no religion, race or country. They are parasites and know where to put the money to make money with no work at all. No housing market to invest, no bluechips...hmm lets see consumers wont stop eating or buying oil, so put all the money where you are guaranteed returns. As long as there is a last person to buy oil you will be making money. Capitalism is a crime against humanity. Food/Oil are natural resources that will always be there till the Day of Judgement. Enough for all mankind.
wha? Capatilism is anti fascism as well as lots of other anti forms of governement. I find it laughable when people like you have all the rights that this form of governemnt affords you, but when the going gets tough you immediatly bail. Without capaitailsm in some form you would be living in countries like Iran, Afghanistan, and the former Soviet Union.. hell without capatilism we would not even be talking about this because China would still be closed to the world. Captilism was not a crime against humanity, it made the world go round.. havent you noticed that where America goes economically the whole world goes.
You can even blame the U.S. for causing all this economic prosperity in China and India. Where do you think they are getting all this extra money for new cars and such.. could it be the outsourced jobs and factories in other countries? You have something wrong.. Capitalists have religons.. it's dems, liberals and Socailists that have no religons anymore.
These points are all moot anyways.. we have two huge areas within our shores that we found oil now.. but we are not allowed to get it because the dems last week voted not to allow it to be pumped out. Hell, China has now gone to Cuba and is trying to set up stations to hit the find from the side. Can you imagine, China can get it, but we are not allowed and we found it in the gulf of Mexico.
Maybe you should do some reading other than reading that agrees with your opinion on things. Since you hate speculation, it is estimated if we were allowed to get the oil from Colorado.. just 10 % of it would quadruple our oil reserves and gas and energy costs would drop dramitaically...except the Dems said we could not do it last week. Could it be because it is an election year and they want to blame everything on Reps? Werent they blaming high prices on Reps two years ago.. and now prices have more than doubled since then, but they dont take the blame even though they are in power.
The reason of high oil prices are speculators, other countries, the weak dollar, and now it has become political. Instead of compromising and going for all kinds of energy, Dems want to vote down the surest source that would bring everything down. Hmmm.. what powers everything in the U.S.... solar energy which is only 5 percent efficent, or gas? Couldnt we be allowed to drill for oil and invest in nuclear, coal, wind, solar.. and the not perfected hydrogen?
No, it seems Dems want all that other stuff except oil and coal.. so who do you really think cares if gas prices are higher or not, the party who wants to drill or the party that wont let us?
SEANW3..."solar energy which is only 5 percent efficent " ??? With all due, you are incredibly ignorant. Take a few and look up Sterling Solar (USA), Nanosolar (uSA), Solartech (China) and several other references. Multijunction solar technologies are approaching 40% transduction rates. Even if it was 5%, as you incorrectly state, all that would mean is thet the solar farms would just have to be bigger. The Sterling project alone (Out of Sandia Labs in Colorado) is currently building 30 thousand 25KW units.
Let's test your knowledge of solar technology successes. Which city in Spain will soon be getting 30% of its electricity from solar technology?? And has plans for a minimum of 75% within ten years. Which nation in Europe is nearing completion of a 100MW commercial scale pv farm?? You think others should "read"...why not try it yourself??
To be or not to be is the trillion dollar question. Iran here we come.........guns a blazing Texas style

The education level of my fellow Americans is depressing:
Drilling in our own back yard is like giving crack to an addict - there is not enough oil in territory control by the US - political correctness or environmental concerns are not the issues. Drilling in the Arctic will require materials not yet invented for drilling as steel is brittle at -20 degree F, and the ice sheets shift with such force they can crush ships - not to mention no one is really clear about territorial borders.
We need to get away from fossil fuels - and if we had stayed on the path left by Carter in the 70s we would not care what the price of oil was now . But we are a spoilt adolescent population, wanting something for nothing, even though we have had to watch our sons and daughters die so we in places like Iraq can go about driving Hummers we still want to drill for oil rather than move away from fossil fuels.
I agree that we need to move away from oil, how ever if you think they can't drill in ANWR because of the cold , You have maybe never heard of Prudhoe Bay or Siberia. I do like the idea of local tradeing though. May we can bring back the Country we should be. The Country that so many men and women gave their lives to be.
To be or not to be is the question. Iran here were come......guns a blazing to take their oil fields
We need to start drilling our own oil and natural gas. China has a deal with Cuba to drill oil in the Gulf of Mexico only 100 miles from the coast of the US. Why are we not drilling in Alaska were it will only effect approx 2,000 acres out of millions. Start taping our own resources and keep developing new sources of renewable energy. Why will the government not allow any new refineries to be built? We need to start now or become totally dependent on other countries. If the US is to stay a world leader instead of a third world country people better change their way of thinking. Quit being politically correct and do what???s right or this country is in big trouble. This country was founded by pioneer???s not politically correct pansies. We are giving the biggest supporters of terrorism the means to destroy our country and way of life.
An addendum to your thought....the U. S. is providing the technology for the Middle East, China, Southeast Asia and others to develop their oil reserves. Look at what is being exported, I know...it is big rigs and all manner of oil production technology. Our whore companies in the US are sending people over to "help" these developing nations so they can in the end stick it to us. Duh, are we ever gonna learn??
