We have witnessed the greatest power grab in US History as over the past thirty years greedy, selfish, dishonest enviromentalist lied, threatened, scared the hell out of old ladies and conned politicians into never developing an energy policy. Greenpeace, Sierra Club, Friends of the Earth are sue happy, influence peddling purveyors of fear and threats. We should have drilled in Anwar twenty years agon. There is no enviromental threat. The ridiculous mis-statements about nuclear power are fear mongering at its worst. The Democratic party has totally kissed up to enviromentalists and are the cause of our energy crisis and $4 gas. We will loose our airlines, we will loose our big three auto makers if we don't question all the lawsuits and extreme behavior of all the enviromental groups. I have had it with their lies and their power grab. It is past time to halt this idiocy.

It's time for people to wake up and realize this isn't about politics and it's not about oil companies either. We lavished in burning gas for years and fueling mega-monster trucks and SUVs for decades. Time to live within our confines. Paradoxically, this will also resolve the job outsourcing and illegal immigration. All of a sudden the US will become again, a blue(green) collar, antrepreneurial and manufacturing country with a well balance budget. We need the $ 200 oil to change. And we'll get it.

AH, more media hype, scare tactics, self fulfilling prophescies! Already America, in reaction to rising oil prices has stepped up exploration for fossil fuels, spurred on by the higher per BBL price of oil. These Sand Kings in the middle east have to eat and not just oil. The market that is now being driven by commodities brokers and futures dealers will collapse. Now don't get me wrong, the gluttonous fools that sell the oil aka gasoline will very likely keep the prices high to continue to pay their executive obscene bonusus and the like so the average Joe Consumer will get the shaft still. This oil "crisis" is all about spurring more exploration and opening up areas such as Alaska without the strong oppostion of the neo natal tree huggers. What we all need to do is convert our vehicles to CNG burning engines, it is cleaner, cheaper, renewable and much more efficient. Of course that would entail eliminating the stupid ethonal push that is only a political adventure (cost is 1.5btu of oil based fuel to create 1.0 btu of ethonal per recent Popular Mechanics article) designed to subsidize the farm interestes and the biggest ethanol producer, Archer Daniels Midland, no doubt a PAC supporter of one party or another. Hey folks there are darned few E85 filling stations out there for our E85 burners! Other than on military bases.....

Is it just me? I???m just so darned suspicious that the Texas Oil White House is the reason for all this madness. I'm not quite sure how but as we all know, they could screw-up a two car funeral. I can see it now... W - gun's a blazin' gettin' outta Dodge going down in history as the worst representative of the American people EVER! Mounumet Mike Colorado USA

Just another case of media propaganda trying to get everyone all up in arms about what may happen just like the massive "man made" global warming hoax. Why are we not drilling for our own oil? Because liberals would have you believe that drilling on any American soil would kill thousands of polar bears. Not saying that pollution in general is good but this is getting ridiculous. Speculation about what may happen next week, next month, next year, next 20 years is driving everything to panic at an unprecedented rate. Wake up and look at the facts. We need to drill for our own oil and there are perfectly sound ways to do it that protect the environment. And at $130 per barrel we can afford to pay an environmentalist to follow around every single person working in the oil industry.

By the way looking at 150 years of climatic data and trying to extrapolate it out to 50 years in the future and back in time to thousands of years is not looking at the facts.

Yes, far better to wait until disaster HAS stricken, then try to figure out what to do. And of course, it's far more reasonable to assume that it's perfectly SAFE to take the carbon sequestered underground over hundreds of millions of years and just pump it all back into the air in only a few centuries -- that's far more plausible.

  • Posted By: umbrage @ 06/01/2008 10:16:24 PM

Gee, let's see; we can't drill for oil offshorre, in Alaska, in the Rockies, etc. Congress won't let us. We're not funding hydrogen vehicles, We've been talking about doing something to 'get us off foreign oil for 30 years! It takes a crisis fo this country to do anything, unfortunately.

    • Posted By: seanw3 @ 06/01/2008 10:57:45 PM

Hydrogen research has been funded in one way or another this country for the last 35 years.. the foremost authority on the research lives in the U.S. Despite political propaganda, it is not viable because a delivery system has not been perfected yet. Sigh.. the propaganda would have you believe that no research has ever been allowed to take place, on the contrary. I agree with you on the not allowed to drill thing, congress voted it down last week. Now China is attempting to hit it from the side by drilling from Cuba. Isnt that messed up?

      • Posted By: WRAY EDWARDS @ 06/01/2008 11:39:22 PM

Hydrogen is a total scam to try and save the internal combustion engine. A really bad idea. ELECTRIC CARS HAVE ONLY TWELVE MOVING PARTS...OH OH...THERE GOES THE RIPOFF MECHANIC SCAMS AS WELL.TSK...TSK.

Americans need to realize that the politicians, conservative, liberal, democrat or republican don't give a damn about this situation. LIVE WITH IT - THEY DON"T CARE. WE have voted these people into office and now have a government we have not payed attention to and now they ignore us. Pay attention to who you vote for or this is what you get. A government that self perpetuates and stands on our bodies to raise themselves up

  • Posted By: realisticStew @ 06/01/2008 11:38:11 PM

This was a long time coming...it started back in the early 1900's-1920's when Rockefeller and Standard Oil manipulated the market so that automobiles were forced to use oil. bobgsr blaming the Democrats is ludicrous. Just look at the last 8 years...The Bush administration has been putting as much money as possible in the pockets of the oil companies to a mostly complicit Republican Congress (bobgsr...democrats only took control of congress in 2006 and not to a level where they can override a democratic veto so again...you don't know what you're talking about. This article is right...we need leadership that will fight oil company greed policies and we all need to conserve oil and support our government to moving as fast as possible to renewable fuels and energy. It's not just our economy but our security as a nation that depends on this. I agree with the article in that there will be alot of pain and adjustment and likely for quite a few years before we can successfully transition but we need to start now. An Oil based economy makes no sense. We need to shift now.

It's time to realize that politicians, liberal, conservative, dem or republican, DO NOT GIVE A DAMN ABOUT US. They don't care enough to try and solve the problem. It doesn't effect them they same way it does the regular folks. LIVE WITH IT - THEY DON"T CARE

  • Posted By: edaincorporated @ 06/01/2008 11:32:16 PM

i absolutely agree...we...in the usa...are such wussies...we drive our big cars and pump our gas and pay the price and don't give it a second thought...it really is time to cut back and shift gears on our consumption and our production and our power generation...if the current oil-producing nations want to play hardball, then when the time comes, we will leave them high and dry and in the dust...and that means everybody...from you and me to our federal government with a comprehensive energy policy...yes???

  • Posted By: enduser @ 06/01/2008 10:10:50 PM

tentpig... i tend to agree with you but probably not to the extent that you predict... unless there is a dramatic decrease in demand tho... there will be some real problems for the economy in the coming months...

    • Posted By: tentpig@yahoo.com @ 06/01/2008 10:16:28 PM

Decreasing demand in the US will not reduce the price. For every barrel less we consume, that excess will be purchased by developing nations like China and India. The only way we will see a reduction in the price of oil is if worldwide demand decreases -- and that is not likely to happen anytime soon.

If everyone would just band together and dont drive for one week, see what would happen. The only reason that oil keeps going up is becasue Saudi Arabia..."Our Friend"...yeah right, has no intention of dropping prices or actually increasing oil production. We offered them protection for a fair oil market back in the 70's and they accepted. I say if they want to sit back and keep the prices rising, we remove that protection and let whoever wants the place to go in. Look at most of the terrorist nowadays, where are they from..Saudi Arabia, yet we call them friends. Bin Laden's family made their wealth off of the US due to their involvment in the oil industry. So if you look at it we financed our own terrorists by caving into their want of wealth. With the way prices are soaring everyone might want to start wearing man dresses and head scarfs beause the next thing you know they will own the US. Instead of sitting back and taking it up the keister, we should fight back and show them we mean busisness like the old days.

The petroleum robber barrons are not dumb. They see the hanswriting on the wall. The technological chikens which Nicoli Tesla and Dr. Westinghouse hatched at the start of the 20th century, have come home to roost. New nano tube lithium ion battery technology from companies like Toshiba and others will TOTALLY REVOLUTIONIZE ENERGY SOURCING AND USAGE. High gain pv cells, wind and wave energy and other ambient sources of energy will virtually relegate internal combustion engines to the scrapheap of history which should have happened twenty years ago.

The idiots who are touting hydrogen, ethanol, LNG and other stupidities such as automated, battery switching "service stations" are just ogres making lame attempts to preserve their corner gas station, tanker fleets (both ships and trucks), gallon-based liquid infrastructures. Their worst nightmare is an electric automobile which can do 0-60 in four seconds, go 135mph, get 220 miles from one charge, and run off of ordinary house current augmented by solar cells on the owner's roof. If we can put a man on the moon...bla, bla, bla...we can tell the robber barrons to stuffit in about five years.

Then, petroleum (which someone once said "...is too valuable to burn") will be used for plastics manufacturing and not allowed to poison everything it touches. Massive, sufficiently funded manufacturers of sports cars, family sedansand light trucks will be starting production in the next two years. $200 per barrel oil is just their way of sticking it to us one more time before we discover that the internal combustion engine was just a temporary abberation, and they are run out of town...as they should be.

    • Posted By: seanw3 @ 06/01/2008 11:02:35 PM

Hmm.. but how do you plan on getting the energy to charge the battery in the car you say is possible.. Right now oil and coal are the main source of energy in your house. Or didnt you know this?

      • Posted By: WRAY EDWARDS @ 06/01/2008 11:25:02 PM

BTW...I didn't say the car was "possible"...it already exists and it does all the things I said it can do on LAPTOP COMPUTER BATTERIES!!. Are you telling us you don't even know about these vehicles?? Wake up and smell the fresh air behind one of them.

      • Posted By: WRAY EDWARDS @ 06/01/2008 11:20:18 PM

CORRECTION MY FRIEND. We have a pv solar system on the roof of our home which, under net metering prompts the electric company to send US a check every month. Even if we did get our energy from coal and other non-renewable souirces, economies of scale enable power companies to produce way less carbon than our individual tailpipes. Oh,by the way, my neighbor already has an electric auto which he runs exclusively with the solar system which came with the car. Newsflash to you...it doesn't even have a tailpipe.

$200 oil could cause energy wars? What do you brain surgeons think Iraq is?
The "leader" of Afghanistan was the negotiator with then Texas Gov. Bush for Unocal when they wanted to build a pipeline through that country but the Taliban were asking too much. The Taliban were told we can carpet you with gold or we can carpet you with bombs. On May 13 of 2002 after Karzai was in place theBBC reported the pipeline will now be built.

Why doesn't the US being the "bread basket" of the world do the same thing to OPEC countries and cut down on our food exports making it cheaper in the domestic market. Furthermore, Europe could do the exact thing and then both would have countries screaming and hollering for economic mercy. It's ruthless but so are many members of OPEC.

      it

why is it no one blames the democratic congress for this terrible jump in prices. it's only obvious that both groceries and petroleum products (and other standard commodities) have increase by 150-200+ per cent since the democratic congress stepped in. if they continue to hold power, America and the Americam way of life is over. i don't have a problem with a typical surge to keep up with prearation cots, but damn, i see grocveries going up 150% or more in a few months and gas is as bad....it has to stop. it's time WE woke up and got the dems out of control and returned things to some semblance of the status quo. i mean thanks to the dems we can't drill for oiul within 100 or so miles of our shore, but thery're letting china and other contries in to do it...what gives?

you libs forget ,the people you model ( to be like ).use a lot more SAFE nuclear power),I just want to
not have to pick between food for my kid or gas to heat the house are to go to work.
