If it is the desire of oil producing states and refiners to destroy the global economy then this is the message we should send them. We will use weapon we have and every power we control to stop them. Their assets will be seized their lands will become targets for our weapons, any and all of them. We need to conserve and adapt to this changing world but if they want to push and shove us in a corner we definately must send the message. Most of these people are no ones friends. Perhaps a reality check will change their attitude.. The oil companies can be busted in many ways if they don't play ball. Of course we need to seriously move forward to adapt and change. We need a reality check. Goodie

Big oil cannot or willnot drill more wells, and we can't either but some of us can go into algae farming. 20,000 gallons per acre. Support this. see prev 2 posts...

It is surprising. I just returned from Saudi Arabia where a tank of 20 gallon tank only costs little more than $15.00. In fact, the price of gas in that country is down by $4.00 in the last six to nine months.

China is drilling off Cuba, we sit idle and fold our hands waiting for either the environmentalists or the oil tycoons to fold their deck of cards. Immediately suspend all special fuel special requirements, start more drilling off the coast of California, Alaska, and In the Gulf. Consumers? Select one oil tycoon not to buy from and do it for three months. Never elect a President or Vice President from the state of Texas or one that has oil connections. Long-term? Go nuclear, hybrid, and require employees live within a certain distance from work unless the job entails driving. Israel is going completely hybrid--our government must help in this.

Quentin, The Dems voted down drilling for the oil in Colorado and off the gulf of Mexico last week.. sp we cant do it because they are the ones who voted it down.. not the president and not Exxon. So who do you blame now?

Well, a good start would be reduce the speed limiit to 55 mph, again. It worked in the 70's, plus saving alot of lives. And about the comment in the article, farmers getting "big subsidies". My wife and I farm corn and soybeans in Ohio. We sure as h--l haven't seen any subsidies in our mailbox. Only higher bills for fuel and fertilizer and everything else we use.

Enter Your Comment The reduced speed limit didn't help then and won't now. Thats why they got rid of it.

If the United States Nationalized all it's energy into one giant industry without guest workers we could be oil
independant in 155 days and recreate all our industry infrastructures making US the only producer of cheap
fuel in the world. Change is just a vote away, we have time to get into action and take over our American way
of life. Fuel, textile, goods made in America for Americans would change the world. By being self reliant and
buying only from our country with a few exceptions we can recapture our own markets. China, is showing
that her districts are independant of the rest of the world.. If we change today, tommorrow will be to us like
the future is those who are not depedant on others. Bill Gates proved that in 1986, we must become bold
and tommorrow will be ours again.. Vote for a new America, the United States of America one that owns
it resources, owns its energy, owns its future to no one except to ourselves. That is how you avoid wars!

I'm a simple person trying to stay alive, but I do have some common sense. This should be a no brainer. We've got third world countries holding us hostage. We need to develop our own resources available HERE in the US - the Williston Basin is full of oil - hard to get at, but it's there. Bigger than all of the TX and OK fields put together. They say it's expensive to get to - well that's easy...STOP giving our US $ away. STOP ALL US AID to other countries NOW - WE NEED THE MONEY to keep our country out of a full-fledged DEPRESSION. Save US. Nobody else gives a damned about us, and it's time to take care of ourselves. It's called self-preservation. If we use our own money to develop our own fields (and we've got them, obviously), we just may be able to buy some time to develop alternative energy sources. Maybe, we might be able to find some politicians willing to actually work for the good our of country rather than for their own personal enrichment. We've got Col. Sanders babysitting for the chickens. I don't want to see my grandchildren living under a different flag!

We have known since Jimmy Carter times that the Arabs have us over an Oil Barrel and nobody has done anything about it, not Republicans or Democrats.

It's like nobody is in charge.

When was the last Nuclear Plant built? Nobody can remember that far back.

We are so intimidated by the environmentalists that we won't drill off our coasts or in ANWAR. And we won't use our coal - we have more coal than the Arabs have oil.

Why hasn't oil shale been developed? Again, we have more oil tied up in oil shale than the Arabs have. Utah is trying to develop it right now and Congress is blocking it.

Sunny areas could put up massive solar farms. Windy areas could put up massive wind farms.

And the people trying to breach the dams on the Colorado, Snake, Columbia and other rivers need to have a strong message sent to them. People are more important that some "endangered" fish.

Bush just allowed the Polar Bear to be listed as "Threatened" - the first step to putting even more Alaska oil fields off limits.

If Honda and GM can build prototype fuel cell or hydrogen cars why haven't we gone all out to make these production vehicles?

In the meantime, I would start using coal in our factories, replacing oil. Figure out ways to clean it up or get better stack scrubbers.

The only large scale energy project that has been attempted has been ethanol, and that has driven the price of food sky high.

If we don't do something quick the country is going to be completely broke and the only thing that will separate us from the poor nations will be our nukes.

all this fight over oil, you know, can be avoided if we really want to avoid it. Move away from oil. Use electric powered vehicles. Use wind and solar power to generate electricty. Makes plastics from soy or other oil. As it is, we are living in the dark (oil) ages. Do we need more women in power? It seems men are greedy, fighting, war mongers and aggressive lunatics and it's getting old! Let's finally get civilized and work together. How odd is that? Seems it takes women to straighten out the messes men make out of greed and aggressiveness. Grow up before you destroy the damn planet!

If you want to scare the hell out of the oil producers lets go into alae farming, stop blaming each other and think solutions. See previous post...

I have a brother who lives in northeast Texas on top of a LARGE oil supply. He's poverty stricken and dying from cancer, and has been told in no uncertain terms that he might as well be sitting on a lake of molasses because he will never be permitted to sell his rights for drilling purposes without any specific reason given. Congressmen don't care about us, they have the ability to dictate the working class' financial destiny (downward) while they fatten their wages and benefit packagesby their own votes. We are powerless. A government big enough to give you everything you want also has the power to take it away. Sadly though, they aren't taking it away from themselves, they're putting the squeeze on the middle class America, and pushing us below the poverty line with skyrocketing costs of energy, food, goods, etc. How much more fleecing by our own government can we take before our pockets, bank accounts, retirement accounts and faith in our own government has been completely exhausted? Now it looks like China is going to suck our gulf coast dry from Cuba while we sit in line at the gas station. Come on, Washington! Wake up and see, America is heading for bankruptcy within it's own borders while foreign oil money buys up our failing corporations, and other real estate. Clinton, Obama, McCain... it doesn't matter what face represents our country on the world front. Change is what we want... well, we're getting it RIGHT NOW.

I figure in about 15-20 years the US will be considered a third world country. All out jobs are leaving or closing. Even college grads are having trouble finding decent jobs. If gas goes up much more it won't be Worth working a job that pays less than $10 an hour. Just paying for essentials will cost more than you can make. My oldest daughter works for a daycare and goes to collage and at $7.00 and hour she can barely pay for her gas/insurance/food/rent. If it wasn't for the grants and me and her mom helping her she would have to work 2 FULL time jobs. And now my job is ending because of high gas/energy prices. My company is closing it doors forever. guess I better get good at saying..."you want fries with that order"??

Reduce, reuse, recycle. This site www.lifeaftertheoilcrash.net does a great job putting all these issues into perspective.

i agree commonsense200 the only problem is getting the infrastructure in place in time to help the current situation... something needs to be started....NOW

  • Posted By: Scott880 @ 06/01/2008 10:29:18 PM

Whoever has the guts to drill has my vote! The Chinese are drilling off the coast of Cuba. Could we not drill off the coast of Florida? We have plenty of oil in our backyard. Why does America have to head down the drain when we have plenty of natural resources. I have the right to drive an SUV just as the environmentalist has the right to drive his bike to work. I am all for alternatives and green technology but let me have some fries with my hamburger. Oh I get it! We don't want little Johnny or Suzie to see a drill off shore. We are more concern about a pretty coast line and a lone stray wolf than fixing a problem. When there is a power play in hockey the other team needs to capitalize on it. Let us not lose the ballgame when we have the better wits and talent.

I am a teacher-retired military officer-conservative republican-Vietmam Vet--I think and want this country to get off the middle east oil-ethanol is not the solution-we need a government willing to cut ties with Saudi Arabia-they are not our allies as witness by 9-11 and their unwillingness to help out in the current oil situation. I hope right now we have the scientific know-how to mass produce alternative fuels cars-

Oil is a non renewable resource. It is true that there may be reserves left, but they are getting much harder to access and demand is not going down enough to delay the shortage. Oil shale is one answer but.... it is extremely hard to mine and extremely hard to refine... ie... it costs much more to produce.
