I was with this article, totally, until it introduced toward the end, Western involvement. Anytime Western influence provides anything in the way of "resources," movements are misdirected, distorted and, eventually, moot.
A new black-power movement in Central and South America.

Those blacks so desperately wish to claim Latin America as their own. Why not claim their homeland with such vigor. Whoops! There is nothing there to claim. Africans claiming south america as their own is as ridiculous as claiming north america. Oh well, one can dream.
You are right, that is why I praise Mugabe for expelling the white settlers off the Blacks Land the whites stole years past. The same should be done in South Africa also, whites need to be remove like the Garifunas in Honduras.
I'm not going to even address some of the stupidity of these comments, but do know this. The reported numbers in this article may very well be false. Why? May AfroLatinos simply do not identity themselves as Black or African, so yes, the number of AfroLatinos in many of these countries is MUCH higher. There are about 50 "types" of black that I can name (many more depending on where you go), but on a typical census form you check: black/white/asian/etc. For example, a woman who is lighter-skinned, maybe due to a grandparent being white/european, in many say she is inter-racial or white. Why not black? Because black simply isn't cool. Africa and African history is even taught in many of the school systems in these countries, other than that is where slaves are from. That's it.
This isn't news to many AfroCaribbean/Latinos???it's always been this way. Many of these countries never had anything close to a Civil Rights/"I'm Black and I'm Proud" moment in their history, so it is WONDERFUL that it is happening now. I always tell my friends that when you travel to these countries, you will get a taste of what the United States could have been had we not chosen to usher in desegregation and the like.
Why are you people so blatantly racist? Does it make you feel somehow accomplished or dignified to belittle an entire race? When you see a black person are these the thoughts that form in your mind? Does it somehow hurt to acknowledge that there are many many intelligent, accomplished, educated black people who do not fit the stereotypes that you so desperately seek to perpetuate? And for one second can you reflect on your own deficiencies; deficiencies that, possibly more than anything else, contributed to the paltry state of the persons that you so blatantly decry? By the way....when President Obama takes office in January I hope you make an honest assessment of his abilities and character vis a vis his predecessor. In any event, the United States of America will be a significantly better nation when people like you whither away and perish!
To ISpeakTheTruth???Ignorance....the state or fact of being ignorant; lack of knowledge, learning, information, etc. True IGNORANCE is rampant in this world. Some people are truly unhappy because of what they have or what they DON???T have. There are Disrespectful people of all races. Who are you to corrupt a story of impoverished people asserting their sovereignty? Open your mind to something other than hate! There are numerous amounts of people that are affected by unemployment (white, black, asian???.ect.) Black people are not lazy. Black people are rude. Black people are not ignorant and WE do not fail miserably in professional settings! I could be as dense as you and spew insults, but it would only perpetuate the ignorance that you possess. I will only ask you to open your mind and your wallet to find other modes of transportation, that is, if you can afford it!

I speak from firsthand experience having to ride the subway with these fine species. Yapping and cursing at each other. Rude, ignorant and completely oblivious to manners and discipline.
Guess working on the plantation left you deprived of vocabulary.
Unemployment stems from the fact Blacks are nasty, rude lazy and fail miserably in professional settings that call for decorum and respect..Fully knowing most aren't capable of speaking below 30 decibels or uttering N-gg-R and B-Tch in every other sentence

You are right there is nothing to claim in Africa because when Africans were dispersed among the various continents such as North and South America, we weren't allowed to maintain our African identities nor do we have a real tie to our lands. So yes we do have a right to claim our lands. We were forced over, we didn't come over as willing passengers on ships. We were shackled and bound together in horrible conditions and treated as property and humans. I am sure that the labor forced upon the AfroLatins probably helped to maintain the lifestyles of their slaveowers, so yes they do have a right. I would love to be able to identify with my African culture however, I wouldn't even know where to begin. However due to slavery, it is very easy for me to find out who my white ancestors are because of the corrupt behaviors of slave owners.
"Ecuador's blacks, who make up 5 percent of the population, suffer a 14.5 percent unemployment rate, higher than that of the country's nonblack majority and twice that of indigenous groups."
Hmmm... sounds just like America's blacks. Am I detecting a pattern here?
Afrolatinos a term I am not familiar with but I like it. I am first generation Panamanian American. I have two black parents born and raised in Panama. I always felt because I didn't live in NYC or Brooklyn there were not people like me and as I have gotten older I am pleasantly surprised. The article speaks to my existence and the importance of the "world" acknowledging the existence of Afrolatinos who are not half this or half that but fully black and fully Latino.
Obama is influencing the world, directly and indirectly!!!!!!!
The ignorance of the world is excessive. The afrolatinos we are not new, we are not fashion, neither we were born yesterday, we have been in the fight by the liberty, the equality, the respect and the tolerance for thousands of years just as the mayority of the groups afrodescendientes of other countries, we were, we are and we will continue being a power.
