I hope the majority of these comments were posted out of passion and not out of careful thought and consideration because otherwise we have pretty far to go as a society (atleast the society of Newsweek readers).
I agree with "Wolf20" as far as the divisions in our country go (political ones mostly)- you know, if you have the chance to look through the original US Constitution you will notice that political parties aren't actually covered (yes, I know, most of the constitution is meant to be elastic as interpretation changes with time). The United States of America (the government we have now rather than the original republic which failed) was founded for unity and centralization so that cooperation would seem to be less of a utopian, idealistic, i.e. unrealistic, concept.
This comment may seem to have little to do with the article above, but I believe it should be something to keep in mind. Having control over one's passions isn't always easy, but the continual strive for self-control means more as far as a person's maturity level goes (something else to keep in mind).

ab123 ..... What is wrong with working in a Wal-Mart store? You apologized to Ry in Iowa because it sounds like he works in a store? That is really sad that you need to apologize to someone for working in your own company.

littleguy56289 I worked for 5 years in the Produce department I was a "level 4" associate for the last 2 years; I was capped out at $14.91/hr. I transfered to pets dept. mgr. and now make $16.01/hr.

What the heck is to liberal? Just because Walmart is doing right by the middle and lower income families some idiot opens their mouth and once again crap comes out. I applaude Walmart, at least they are trying to make a diiference. What have the conservatives done for us lately? Oh yes thats right, put us in a War that doesn't even make sense, send our Sons, Daughters,Dads, Moms, Husbands and Wives to be killed in a foreign country and in the name of what or who? Wake the freak up America, bring our troops home and take care of our own people first, because if we don't Someone else will.

A WAR ON TERRORISM DOESN'T MAKE SENSE? I WILL PRAY FOR YOU

MA Wilson- We have townhall meetings once a month with our senior executives and I will make sure to mention that we need to get another store in your area. I am just one of the million associates but maybe my voice will be heard. Thank you for sharing your support for our Wal-Mart! It is always about the customer and Im glad that you love Wal-Mart too!!!

    • Posted By: RynoinIowa @ 06/09/2008 10:55:56 PM

ab123 you must live near bentonville. Our District Mgr. Never visits our store to "meet" with associates; let alone anything else. He just stepped down to a store mgr. I wish our "executive" mgmt. would meet with us once a month. Wal*Mart needs to evolve; but remember it's core values and take care of their associates and customers.

RynoinIowa .... I appreciate the information! It's good to know facts about Wal-Mart.

  • Posted By: littleguy56289 @ 06/09/2008 10:52:08 PM

Ok Wal-Mart employees.... Is this guy just making this up? = "I am 32 years old and for the last 2 years worked without a raise because I was "capped out" at my position level."

  • Posted By: ab123 @ 06/09/2008 10:52:07 PM

I am not going to agrue with somone who obviously knows nothing about the benefits of Wal-Mart. However I will support Wal-Mart because no matter what product I want to buy if it is available and another company may advertise a better deal Wal-Mart will ALWAYS match their price. IF the quality is questioned I have NEVER had an issue with returns. I have no complaints. Other retailers have restrictions on advertisements and return policies.

Can you Wal-Mart employees explain why this is so common = "Our local store has 39 registers and it is rare for more than 6 of them to be manned. "

    • Posted By: RynoinIowa @ 06/09/2008 10:51:14 PM

Read my post below and you'll KNOW why.

  • Posted By: RynoinIowa @ 06/09/2008 10:49:40 PM

I work at wal*mart (8 years now) when I first started; it was all about FAMILY values, you took care of your associates and in turn they took care of you. Now that the "kids" are running it we have become so P.C. it's not even funny; wal*mart tries to caters to everyones needs while abandoning it's own image and beliefs that made the company so good to begin with. Wages went from being a % increase to a flat rate increase. Benefits have gotten better. Salary caps have been established. I am 32 years old and for the last 2 years worked without a raise because I was "capped out" at my position level. If I hadn't transfered departments to a higher work level; I would've quit. Now in management; wal*mart ensures it's understaffed so that it's salaried mgmt. gets their bonus; they call it being staffed to plan. Yet ignore the fact that if they had enough associates to stock freight, cashier, etc. and pay a decent starting wage; their stock would go through the roof. For all their "green" efforts wal*mart cannot see the forest for the trees.

  • Posted By: ab123 @ 06/09/2008 10:48:34 PM

Actually I know MANY people who are 30 year associates and their stock has split several times and have quite the retirement. As for me, Ive gotten plenty of raises. Wal-Mart is not greedy to their associates. Maybe you should apply it sounds like you dont work for a very good company. Do you honestly see your job around in 10 years? Because I know Wal-Mart will be.

After reading most of the comments, I have to say that it seems that most people are more concerned with promoting their own agendas, rather than restricting their comments to the article's topic.. ..... All commerce comes down to the law of supply and demand..... Many stores, not just Walmart, sell items or market their wares to segments of society of which I am not a member. Does this mean that I boycott and bad mouth every store that does so? No, for then, my venues for shopping would be restricted. What I do , do though is to try to shop more often at those stores offer the goods that I want.... I read labels. If it is made in or grown in China, I do not l buy it. I also try to shop at a variety of stores; I try to support both mom and pop stores and corporate owned stores. I believe that most Americans do the best they can with what they have to spend. I would also like to nominate "TheRedneckBaron" for president, for his comments on this topic are the only ones that are logical and well-written

  • Posted By: ab123 @ 06/09/2008 10:46:27 PM

Um No. Why would you think that? Unlike other companies Wal-Mart actually gives their associates a chance to speak out against anything they would like to discuss. Its called the Open Door Policy.

  • Posted By: tishangel @ 06/09/2008 10:46:06 PM

I think this group(NLCP) should go find some hole and jump in it, I love Wal-Mart and the products they sell, I would not shop anywhere else.

  • Posted By: littleguy56289 @ 06/09/2008 10:45:56 PM

ab123 ... What will you do in 3 years when they fire you because you've been there too long? Or do you plan on working at your current wage for the next 10-15 years?

  • Posted By: littleguy56289 @ 06/09/2008 10:45:08 PM

maewilson .........When Wal-Mart is your only choice to buy retail goods in your area and they raise their prices as high as they want because there is no competition....Then what will you do?

  • Posted By: littleguy56289 @ 06/09/2008 10:44:11 PM

ab123.... are you okay? Did you hit your head on a rock or something?

  • Posted By: celticbonsai @ 06/09/2008 10:15:48 PM

I hate Malwart and refuse to ever spend a penny in there. I love the going green commercials I went in a store today just to look and they do not carry any recycled paper products the only green thing they do have are the compact fluorescent light bulbs that if they didnt carry they would lose alot of money. I say piss on the the corporate pigs that ruined the mom and pop stores of America.

    • Posted By: ppullion @ 06/09/2008 10:39:55 PM

I think you need to talk to that store then if they dont have anything "green" in their store. My store has lots of "green" stuff. Recycled paper for printers and copiers, t-shirts made from recycled plastic and cloth spun together, these are just few items of many we have.

Unhappy Wal Mart employees: If you are unhappy about your working conditions, wages, or lack of benefits including health insurance, then GET A BETTER EDUCATION AND WORK TOWARDS GETTING A BETTER JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I worked at McDonalds as a teenager. Do you think they offered great wages or health insurance? Hell no! But millions of low-skill people work there and other similar places. Some move on, and work towards something better. Finish high school. Go to college, even if it's only community college. Don't have bavies you can't afford to take care of! In general, work towards something better. It's the same with Wal Mart. A low-skill job is just that. If you want something better, go out and get some skills!!!!! Stop expecting everything to be spoon-fed to you just because you and your liberal handout-loving buddies love to scream and whine....

    • Posted By: dolfan31 @ 06/09/2008 10:38:45 PM

Amen brother !! Absolutely right on. Take responsibility for your own position in life !! I worked at a c-store on graveyards to get through college. Take charge of your own life!! due not blame a company for your problems. By the way I know hourly associates with only a high school education making 40k plus. Not exactly below the poverty line

    • Posted By: pingal @ 06/01/2008 11:15:25 PM

Consider yourself lucky. Not everyone is in a position to continue their education and become a CEO. Interesting how you believe the stereotype of a Wal-Mart or McDonald's employee.

      • Posted By: summer4077 @ 06/02/2008 8:10:31 AM

There is no luck in education. EVERYONE can continue their education. There are no restrictions in America as to who can go to college, as there are in some countries. Education is not free, but there are many scholarships, grants, work-study programs, and even relatively low interest loans to make education possible. Not to mention that if you are a low-income person, your education is practically free through federal government funding and assistance. I have seen irresponsible women with 4 kids languish through 7 years of college (for a 4 year degree) while getting free housing, free childcare, free food, and a free education...all while I held down two jobs and took out $10k in loans to finance my own. So yeah...no one is 'lucky'. In fact, the middle class seem to have it the hardest--we make too much to get funding, and not enough to pay for our school.
I just can stand whiners in this country. There are no restrictions on ANYONE except those they make for themselves. Too many people hide behind excuses.

      • Posted By: desertgirl @ 06/02/2008 1:55:53 AM

Not everyone who goes beyond high school becomes a CEO. There are well paying jobs out there that don't require more than 1 year's worth of training. Many immigrants both legal and not come here with nothing but the clothes they have on and become very successful. What's the excuse of someone born and raised here?

I live in a very small town Vicksburg mississippi. each day we have thousands of people visit Walmart from at least 4 states. My comment is that we need another Walmart here to commodate. The store is full everyday all day. Unless you go very inthe morning or very late at night. Now I love walmart, I'm there at least 4 times aweek. It has every thing I need. thanks M.A.Wilson
