I am an Egyptian. As long as I remeber I haven't seen any Egyptian I know drinks alcohol nor encourages his daughters to be belly dancers. The Egyptian people both Muslium and Christians are regligious by nature and if we look at the last 100 year in Egyptian histroy we would notice that the above phenomenons came as a result of the British occupation to Egypt. It was the British soliders who demanded that kind of entainment and it was encouraged as form of cultural dominance over the Egyptians. Once the occupation ended the circle returned to normal. Alochol until the 1970's used to be served in social clubs, on the corners of the major commerical streets now it doesn't . I personally believe that what happening is normal and the fuess made about is because once again the strange western patterns failed to penetrate our country as it did with others.

Sorry, but as an Egyptian, I have to disagree. Yes we are a religious people, but we are also a tolerant people. We don't try to dictate to others how they should live and what they should do (mostly because we know we have different religions with different opinions). To say it was the British who demanded entertainment such as belly dancing is to deny your own history. Belly dancing can be traced back to the time of the Pharoahs! The Egyptians you know who don't drink alcohol do that by choice, not because someone disallowed them the right. So if you have the choice to abstain, why must it be banned from places? And just because no father encourages his daughter from being a belly dancer, does mean that he forbids her from ever dancing in a group with her friends, or from watching a movie or show that includes dancing.... it's all a huge part of our culture.

I think it's good if the people want to be more conservative. However, this will definitely cut back on tourism...which I believe is paramount to Egypt's economy. Egypt is a beautiful country. It appears there are more issues (as mentioned in others' comments) though that are more pressing than entertainment. Still, I wish the government would take better care of the pyramids and the artifacts in the Egyptian Museum. It is sad to see so much debris and waste laying nearby.

Not just Belly Dancing... but the Entertainment industry.
At least they are not completely censoring it.
A French film crew shot a movie called "Whatever Lola Wants" in Egypt and Morrocco about Belly Dancing.
And it is not censored. Even going as far as using "***" in the film.

Thanks. I wasn't picking on you awhile back when I was replying to the blackman poster.

IF the people truly do want to be more conservative, then it's fine. However, this is one true way to decrease tourism. Looks like, however, in reading the other comments, that there are many issues beyond entertainment here. I for one, think Egypt is a beautiful country. I do wish the government would take better care of the pyramids though. It's sad to see so much debris and waste laying nearby in the sand.

Shamrocker, you decry the evil, immoral nature of American culture but lose sight of the fact that because you live in a Western culture is the only reason you can express these views. Try this for me, just as a little experiment. Go to the middle of any town, village or city in Saudi Arabia and start making disparaging remarks about Islam. See how long before you are jailed or worse. Do the same in New York City. You may get a few strange looks but I doubt your life would be forfit. Most modern Americans seem moral enough to know that killing others in order to force your religious views on others is wrong. I say most because there are extremists in every culture, but even the religious right in America, who I dislike immensley, uses propaganda rather then violence to spread their message (I know there are exceptions). If you want to live in a sexually repressed, censored, theocratic, oppressive, dogmatic society where someone else tells you what you can see, hear, read, or are able to dicuss you have the ultimate freedom of any person in any free country. The freedom to leave. Let me know how that works out. America sure as hell ain't perfect but I'll take it over the alternative any day.

Every Egyptian who knows Sawiris knows he's full of ***...he is one of the "American wanna be" Egyptians...he forgets his roots and his origin living in a bubble within a suffering community, and all he cares about is to put his "determination" to promote what the western society wishes to let go off after they tasted the consequences of their alleged liberalism. Hey Sawiris...wake up ***

    @Mishka_801
You need to understand middle eastern history before you comment on them being fanatics and war mongers. Middle eastern history did not start with arabs, it started long before babylon. Understanding their history and how islam shaped the west will reveal where your so called FREEDOM originally came about. Liberty/Freedom is not a french or greek thing. They just perfected it.

Everyone should be worrying about Saudi influence because they have over a trillion $$$ investment in this country and dictate how companies here should operate. This is not just a middle eastern phenomenon. They are the most fundamentalist society and do not represent the middle east, yet the USA decided we should feed them cash hand over fist because they have oil.

It's the US who gave them what they have today and didn't care what they do with that money. Now it's coming back to haunt you and all you can do is point the finger at them when it was the USA who pretected them and allowed them to buy out corporations in the west and east.

Too bad the US stepped in to fight Iraq during the first Gulf War. I was hoping that Iraq would conquer Saudi Arabia. It would have been a cake-walk for the Iraq Armed forces.

selena087 - it is very obvious that you are wahabi.. because you believe their lies about Shias.. If you think i'm biased about wahabis, then please go to the website: http://www.islamic-information.com/ and email the imam there - Maulana Mukhtar Shah Naeemi - who happens to be Sunni and ask him what types of things Wahabis have done.. You still don't believe it, then please read the book - The two faces of Islam - not written by a Shia or Sunni but a Jewish author.. You still don't want to believe it, then please look up the word wahabi on yahoo and find out how hateful their religion is.

A shia only dislikes the enemies of the family of Prophet Muhammad, because Prophet Muhammad said that Allah's curses are on those people.. Neither a Sunni nor Shia is an enemy of Prophet Muhammad's family.. But a wahabi is

This is what these damn Saudis do. They spend the money that they are stealing from us in oil prices to teach that women are lower then men. On top of this, they teach things like you cannot be friends with a non-Muslim, etc. Prophet Muhammad's religion never became the fastest growing religion in the world because he didn't want to meet non-Muslims.. People with this mentality should be taken to a firing squad and shot to death..

These damn people have destroyed the culture of my country - Pakistan - by their so-called Islamic beliefs. One thing I have to say.. I don't pray 5 times a day.. I might pray 5 times a year.. but I'm much better then these so called Muslims

    • Posted By: Meli23P @ 06/03/2008 2:39:29 PM

mfrizvi who you spend your life with is not because of religion there is a lot more to that. i would marry anyone who is not my relagion or from the same place that i was born in and its not because of the religion but because of the culture and tradition. i am not against anyones religion and i think its wrong for you to say something like that. People need to look at each other as an individual not who they are or where they comes from or what they believe in. People need to pay for their mistakes it doesnt matter who they are, but that doesnt mean that everyone who is from same place or same religion is just like that one individual.

  • Posted By: curlyfries110 @ 06/03/2008 2:38:31 PM

Wow people hate America huh? Well I was just born here and I dont believe in or condone alot of things this country does, but I would want to live anywhere else because at least here I am free..

    ignorance begets ignorance.
I am of the belief that one should research before speaking out.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinions.
ALL the cultures, across the board, have had history of war, and in some cases a strict sect of religion.
Some want to say extremism lives in the Middle East..It is not only there.
Here is an at-home example of extremism in religion- puritanism.

The irony is that probably some of these same people here slamming belly dancers are the same ones who tune into "Dancing with the Stars or American Idol". Or perhaps they also frequent Hooters as well.

I love Egypt and their beautiful dancers. Some teach frequently in the US and elsewhere in the world if Egypt decides that there is no room for them I am sure they will be welcome elsewhere!
