Why does Newsweek/ the US care? Or why should Newsweek/ the US care? Don't you guys have enough of your own problems to care about? If not, may be you guys should look closely how China (oh yeah, The Big Bad Communist China) is handling the earthquake aftermath with great concerns for its population. Oh yeah, the Chanpion of Freedom and Democracy, that the US claims to be, did not do sucha great jon for its population in the Katrina aftermath. So shut up and take care of your own problems instead of giving lessons to others.

Dina, Randa, Raqia, Fifi and all other dancers are welcome here in the USA!

Watch out there Alex; somebody in america will protest that as well. They will slap some ridiculous label on it like the "slave-trade"-LOL!

I have no hatred for belly dancers... Its Egyptian tradition and shame on the Saudis for infringing on their customs and traditions. Thats all I am saying.

It is very sad to see how money speaks across the world. For Egypt what will be the next thing to go. It is not the idea of men and women not touching or thinking about it. It is the fact that Egypt is giving up who she is for the almighty pound! Next we will have the islamic police on the streets making sure the women are completely covered! I love Egypt, it is my second home. I am praying for them. One thing the Saudis cannot buy is their way into heaven.

mfrizvi - I see your point, but to another extent all humans are born with their own brain power and people have an inherit knowledge of what is right and wrong and if they cant listen to that little inner voice that says "hey this is not a good thing" then maybe they should be hanged. A very popular firearms instructor once said in a news interview "There are people that need to be shot" I couldnt agree more. Its the simple minded, brainwashed, non thinkers that ruin it for everyone.

Well before "the righteous" of the boards begins their tirades; when I was at the University many of these professing religious types which were on campus were the first to be out at the clubs, dating around, getting off on western culture, and partying till daybreak. But; when these types get back to their worlds, they all of a sudden become these strict followers of the book (whom ever they may be serving).
Religious fanaticism has been the demise of many a people / nation. Maybe I should rephrase this: "man-made religions". I realize that mankind has a natural spiritual hunger and thats great, but not at the expense of others who don't subscribe to their beliefs.

mfrizvi ok im lebanese and i live in KSA. Trust me i know a LOT abt the way shias treat sunnis and vice versa. im not saying sunnis are perfect but shias whole religion is based on hate, contrary to sunnis. first and foremost shias HATE sunnis cuz they supposedly killed hasan or husain or whatever, in leb most sunnis are welling to treat shias like brothersbut shia;s are so hateful toward them.

The downfall of the human race is Organized Religion. It is nothing but a "Belief" and people are willing to kill and die for a "Belief". No facts back up the "Belief" but countries are run by them and the arts are dictated by them. When will the human race wake up and realize that their "Belief" is nothing more than stories made up by a few supersitious humans trying to explain God and the spiritual world? They are wrong and I hope when they do die and cross over that is the first thing that they realize.

curlyfries110 - that is the same problem with the ignorant Muslim societies.. I'm not saying all Muslims are ignorant, but he ones that are, it is very difficult to remove that mentality from their minds

  • Posted By: curlyfries110 @ 06/03/2008 2:22:39 PM

Blackman8387 I would have to agree with that statement...those countries are not as varied as ours.

  • Posted By: HD39 @ 06/01/2008 2:01:24 AM

Such fluff! This is news? A billionaire thinks "... this is the biggest problem in the Middle East right now" ??? I think he should be tied up and thrown into Baghdad or Gaza for a couple of days....

    • Posted By: scrap4ever @ 06/03/2008 1:13:24 PM

Yes it is fluff. The world will not cease because of abstaining from alcohol, belly dancing and movies. Are they something any country needs? I mean really needs, I think they are just WANTS, I have lived a good life for 60 years and never felt the NEED for any of the above. I am not a muslim either.

      • Posted By: shocked2see @ 06/03/2008 2:22:16 PM

You are right that alcohol, belly dancing, and movies may not represent "needs" here in North America. But for Egypt, these are staples of the cultural and historical heritage of the country. Belly dancing is the part of the society! Egyptian movies were always leading edge in stories, talent, and technology. And yes even alcohol is important, because it shows that even though Egypt is an Islamic country, it is a tolerant one, that does not force anyone to do/not do anything. If you believe alcohol is wrong, then there are plenty places where you can go and it's not served. If you don't have an issue with alcohol, then there are also places where it is served.

This article highlights not so much the loss of the actual things in the loss of "alcohol, bellydancing, and movies", but the loss of the Egyptian heritage, culture and pride. It's like asking Americans to give up Hollywood, or Canadians their hockey.

not only that curlyfries but half these bombers and murderers commit these acts in their teens and early twenties before they can make informed decisions. nor are they exposed to the myriad of different cultures that we are here

  • Posted By: curlyfries110 @ 06/03/2008 2:19:28 PM

mfrizvi - It was hard you are correct. However their way of thinking is wrong and I chose not follow thier ways. I dont talk them much now because of my decision to like everyone equally and I am now better off i believe. What makes it completely obsurd is they had no basis or facts to support their ignorance. It was just because they were different. That has, and always will be wrong to me.

  • Posted By: mfrizvi @ 06/03/2008 2:18:49 PM

selena087 - I was born a Shia Muslim.. It is against Shiism - followers of Ali ibn Abu Talib - to teach this. Please get your facts straight. This mentality is taught by Wahabis - followers of Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahab Najdi.. Please read about him

I don't know why this article even made news on an American publication. We care even less about Middle Eastern culture than they do about ours. The only thing I'd like to see come out of the Middle East is peace. Arabs don't know what the word means, they've been fighting for centuries, if not with themselves or the Jews then they fight with Western Civilized nations. Arabs always are fighting with someone they are not happy unless they have a knife in their hands. They have no idea how to properly govern themselves yet they are pushing their archaic and obsurd beliefs and demands on the rest of the world through local thugs in the form of terrorism and justify murder by calling it religion. At least the ghetto trash that kill each other in America call it what it is and don't hide behind some stupid recruiting tool called Jihad in the name of Ahla! Good grief I think I'm going to barf! And they call Westerners corrupt? These insane idiots prey on the uneducated poor to join their political murderous agendas and stir up the whole region to war and contention. I can't think of a more loathsome people on all the earth. When the Middle East at least ATTEMPTS to become a LITTLE civilized, it can then expect help from the outside FREE world. When they learn to stand up for themselves and kick out the corrupt leaders as the Americans did with the British then they can expect help from the rest of the FREE world. As long as they hate the FREE world then they can and WILL starve and stay corrupt. GOD BLESS AMERICA...

curlyfries110 - Tell me one thing.. you grew up a certain way.. how hard was it to get rid of that mentality that your culture - meaning racist home - taught you.. I can tell you you're probably 1 in a million that actually changed..

It's something that is very difficult and there are consequences - eg. your family doesn't like you..

  • Posted By: selena087 @ 06/03/2008 2:15:27 PM

mfrizvi...you have it the other way around. Shia's believe that the reward for killing a sunni is Heaven. Uqtul sunni tadkhul jannah-Kill a sunni, enter jannah.
Please get your facts straight next time. Wahhabis do not belive anything of the kind. The two mosques in Mecca and Medina are3/4 full of IRANI SHIA's more than half the year.
ggharm thSo i dont know WHAT your talking about.
