The reviews are bad because the movie is bad. The movie itself is sexist - portraying women as selfish, immature, irresponsible, wedding-ring hungry little girls. I liked the TV show...but I expected growth and maturation from the women. That expectation was blown to bits - one woman gets slightly overweight and she is ridiculed; one woman goes back to the man who broke her heart AGAIN; one woman forgets how to balance her career and her husband; one woman s*@ts her pants. Oh yeah, we are all sexist to expect so much better for a ground-breaking TV show.

Next you'll be telling the men that it's sexist if they don't like Harlequin romance novels.

Methinks you are a bit thin-skinned and sensitive if this kind of thing bothers you. Why not try your commentary on something that really matters?

The reason is that the degree of sexism in this country matches the racism of a generation ago--not that there isn't racism today, but it isn't as blatant as it was a generation ago. I am a white man who has observed the weakness and cowardly behavior of men all my life. And i am not "not guilty" myself.

Men have been sleeping with whatever and whomever they wanted for years. And for years women have been objectified in movies. Porky's, American Pie etc, Even in action movies, very rarely does the woman get to defend herself. She usually just screams and waits to be rescued. In Kevin Costner's Robin Hood, Mary Elizabeth Mastrontonio's Marian pretty much kicked Robin Hood's butt, and at the end of the movie, watched anxiously on the sidelines waiting for Rbin to save her virtue. In SATC, it's about the women. And it's the kind of stuff we really talk about. Women can and do have sex. These sorts of things really do happen. I was not a vestal virgin sitting on a block of ice waiting for my husband to come and "rescue" me. Finally there was a show and now a movie that shows women that have sex and still have brains and aren't mindless idiots waiting to be seduced by the big strong hero.

these comment boxes are too small. From previous comment - unhealthy obsession with luxury materialism. Not to mention the offensive Jennifer Hudson role (a young African-American woman with a Computer Science degree and the only job she can get is as a maid (oops, I mean personal assistant) to a white woman?). In any case - I hope my analytical criticism of this movie isn't seen as sexism.

I worry that we've gotten to a place where legitimate criticism is automatically seen as being sexist (this is coming from a 25 yr old woman). I've agreed with most of the criticism I've read of the movie, much of which has been written by women (Dargis of the NYTimes, the women of Slate.com). The movie was out-dated, portrayed appallingly one-dimensional women, and fostered an (I think) unhealthy obsession with lu...luluxurymaterialism

I agree that a lot of the criticism of this movie seems particularly vicious, but I would disagree that the movie is "sweet and touching" (and this is as a 25 year old female). I found that I agreed with most of the criticism I read, by women or men (Manohla Dargis of the NYTimes wrote a particularly negative review that did not, to me, seem sexist). The movie was little more than a two-hour ad for high fashion, and portrayed singularly one-one-dimens

So Lauren Hutton is a sexist too?

    • Posted By: Prfesser @ 06/03/2008 10:13:43 PM

      Lauren Hutton is HOT!!!!!!.

      Ooooooooooooooooooo.

That may date me, but then, I'd like to date her.

Are you serious? The whole "Sex and the City" franchise is nothing but sexism. The characters are pathetic. They treat men like trash, the most important thing in their lives seem to be sex and shoes...they are the very definition of "shallow" and "self-centered." Puh-leez. I am a woman and I HATE this show/movie. These "ladies" are the last people I'd want to know. If this show were about men acting this way, people would be raising hell. Being a feminist and being an empowered woman doens't mean you need to bash men. The whole point is that men AND women should treat EACH OTHER with respect. I'm with the men on this one....and guys...please know...not ALL women like this show. Some of us actually appreciate our boyfriends/husbands for the great guys they are....not because we're in some sick competition with our friends. If you're dating a woman who treats you like the characters in the show treat their dates..find yourself another girlfriend. You deserve better.

It's pathetic how limited the US males are. They are very unsure of their masculinity and mistakenly believe that understanding and caring for a woman might be a sign of weakness or idioticity. I am a full blown male, woman loving type, originally from Austria, and as we use in Europe, if I dare to hug or even worst hug a male friend they don't know how to react and they become borderline nuts and confused. and you think that they may adventure to admit a girls movie? C'mon, don't give them so much credit, just ignore them...

"Idioticity"? Good grief. Learn to spell. Learn the language. It's "idiocy," just like the basic issue being discussed here.

Sex and the City was created and written by a gay man. It has absolutely nothing to do with real women or their real behavior.

Looks like women critics' reviews at Rotten Tomatoes of Indiana Jones and Sex and the City were 82% and 61% positive, respectively. Both a few points higher than the average. Draws your conclusions into question.

Actually the "Iron My Shirts" guys at Hillary's speech worked for her. Check your facts. Otherwise, its a movie, who cares? Like Indiana Jones, its entertainment, not consequential.

There may be some sexist element to men's reactions to "Sex and the City," but be fair. If statistics are close to correct, and if the reports behind those statistics are true, more than half of the weekend take for the movie was due to groups of women essentially reserving theaters in order to have groups of friens watch the film together. And there may be something to this. Most movies do their best business on Saturday nights. SATC did its best on Friday (all those bought-out theater seats).

I'm not sexist. I think Sarah Jessica Parker is one of the sexiest women around, and not just based on her looks - but her attitude and her intelligence. She is one of the few female leads I'll watch a movie for, but there are fewer men I watch movies for.

Be honest. The movie is a chick flick. and unabashedly so. If guys don't want to see it, that is their perogative. If women don't want to see Indiana Jones (I'm lukewarm on this one, myself), they don't have to see it.

The bottom line is, no one is forced to see a movie, and no one is forced not to see a movie. If few women-centered flicks garner big box-office bucks, that is because they appeal to an audience that is unwilling to support it.

And as for Hillary. Two years ago I was eager to see a Clinton-Obama ticket. Hillary has shown her darker side, though, and that's not because she's a woman, but just a devoted, old-style politician..

    Stop making sex the issue.

it's said that if you feel attacked by feminism, it's probably a counter-attack. we're all even now, ok? let's move on to "if you can't say something nice, don't say anything".

When old men are no longer in power, then they can possess the much-envied "underdog" position. Until then, old men are still on top--and still pigs.

  • Posted By: idonow @ 06/03/2008 9:43:09 PM

when men act this way they are pigs when women act this way they are "liberated" when old men act this way they are pitiful when old women act this way they hire a young man to clean their pool

Calling a horrible movie "a horrible movie" doesn't make you sexist just because the movie is about women. Calling a weak candidate "a weak candidate" doesn't make you sexist because the candidate is a woman. The real story here is that Political Correctness has gotten so out of control, one can no longer state the obvious.
