What an embarrassing article. Mainstream media continues to prove its irrelevance. Way to go author! Way to go editor!!

this is so obviously franchise advertising on Newsweek's part. This could be re-titled: "The Best-Selling Videogames made in the last 3 years that you can buy on the Xbox 360". What about Final Fantasy 7 or Final Fantasy 8 and their 9.8 and 8.5 million copies, respectively? Super Mario Bros 3 and nearly 20 million copies? Starcraft selling 9.5 million copies? Check this link out if you want the real list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_video_games#Top_20_console_games_of_all_time
Interesting how this article fails to mention a certain game involving two plumbers, a princess, a dragon, and 40 million copies sold.
Gotta love the complete lack of mention of a certain game, involving two plumbers that has sold more than 40 million copies...
come on newsweek, if you're going to mention video games, at least do something better than shallow transparent advertising
4) some of these older games have much further reaching sales, than the original console release; for example, the re-release of Final Fantasy 3 SNES as Final Fantasy 6 GBA (and probably sold more than 9 million even excluding the US)
1) "units sold of a specific console release version of a game" is not an accurate way to portray overall sales
2) even if it was, this article is still completely inaccurate; there are plenty of video games with bigger numbers
3) this list makes the public look like a bunch of idiot sell-outs; really, is a junk game that got it's hype from random-violence controversy the biggest most influential most selling game franchise? Not saying I have anything against GTA, just that I really don't think it deserves any awards... It's nothing special, outside of the sell-out-to-get-media-attention gimmick
Some of these....I beg to differ on. Most of these titles have been out for some time which has given them AMPLE time to gain that many sales. Consider a game's launch date or launch weekend. More highly anticipated games should have made this list in that case. Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Nintendo Wii sold over 800,000 copies on it's launch DAY just in the U.S. alone. Worldwide to date, the game has sold nearly 9 million copies, which by your listing, places it right up there with GTA IV and San Andreas.
Fallout 3 is another example. With an October 28, 2008 launch right up to the end of December that year, the game sold nearly 5 million copies just in 2 months! That's pretty epic.
Not to mention a few of the other best sellers like the original 3 Super Mario titles on the NES, or for that matter, most of the Mario and Zelda franchise, Final Fantasy VII, the Sime, World of Warcraft, the Pokemon franchise, and even Atari Pac-Man ranked higher than some of or all those listed here.
Just some food for thought.
I'm pretty sure that awful Pokemoin series (Blue/Red/etc) had topped the charts with most units sold, last I looked, which was several years ago, it was around 50 million. Along with no mention of World of Warcraft (which has an active 12 million subscribers, not to men tion raw units sold); it seems there's no mention of Final Fantasy 7, which several years ago had over 20 million copies sold.
This article has been poorly researched and written. I'd highly recommend the author seriously consider doing some research on topics in the future before writing about them.
I mean, you can simply Google "best selling" to get actual figures, I can't imagine how lazy or poor an author you must be to not even bother Googleing the subject you plan to write about.
An article on video games and not ONE mention of Nintendo? Fail.
An article on video games and not ONE mention of Nintendo? Fail.
i agree with KassCamilla. This article is very biased towards Grand Theft Auto, Madden, and console games in general. World of Warcraft is probably one of the selling games of all time. This article lacked much research and is a total fail.

Newsweek's Editor in Chief should be embarrassed by the lack of accuracy and clarity in this article. Perhaps the writer and staff did not take the time to map out the story and decide to limit it to console games while not bothering to alter the title of the story. Being an owner of just about every video game console, handheld gaming device and several PC's, I think I can speak from some experience and make the comment that MMO's and sims on the PC far overtake the console games in monetary sales. In our household alone, we pay for 2 Xbox Live accounts and 3 PC online accounts. The PC games are generally less expensive than the console games, aside from the monthly fees, so they don't necessarily track as higher sales. With over 11 million current subscribers and many, many past subscribers, World of Warcraft alone, and its 2 Expansion Packs, surpasses any console game mentioned in the article when it comes to number of satisfied purchasers. Newsweek really fell flat on their faces with this article. what does it say about the other articles it has published. In a word - WOW!! ROTFLOL
Hell, FF7 sold over 10.2 million (worldwide, but still). This is crap. CRAP, I SAY. Let's try this list again, except, y'know, with facts that you DIDN'T pull out of your ass.
sUPER mARIO SOLD 40 mILLION..Wheres that on the list?
This article must be a plug for GRAND THEFT AUTO SERIES..
All of the article is wrong.....
Heck Original Mario is in the book of world RECORDS as the most sales...
Article completely wrong!
Super Mario 3 sold more than 17.2 Million. San Andreas is not the top selling game of all time at 9 million.
Super mario 3 sold 17.2 million copies. This article is wrong.
