Men still rule the world! The white man gave the black man the constituional right to vote before giving the right to vote to women "of any color," and when I was in law school, I predicted a black "man" would be allowed by these men to be president before any woman. It's going to take a woman to clean up the mess men have made od our country, ... and Hillary knows it!

You better find a better woman to run then. HRC would have won in any recent election. She just ran into the Obama phenomena. He's a once in a generation inspirational leader.

If she had just shut up she could have been President by now.
She killed herself with her mouth. And Bill.

Her gender has nothing to do with her mouth.

I am a soldier in iraq.It dont matter who wins we will still be here fighting someone elses battle. These people dont want to fight for themselves they want others to do it.Those running for office need to work on the rast of the world and get them to step up and take on some of this fight so we can come home.Dont worry bout what taxes can be cut or who can get rich worry bout us that are here putting our lives on the line for someone else.worry bout taxes after we are home are we not more importatnt.

Unfortunately, no one else wants to play. Burned bridges. It hurts. You're afraid.
I dislike those who would keep you there - a lot.

There are those who can not see you because you are far away, and the brown spot on the lawn means more to them than the human in your boots. There are those here who say you belong there because we're America and we don't lose - even while we're losing. There are those who say you should be there because you volunteered. There are those without husbands, wives, sons and daughters over there, who think we should fix the problem with a bomb.

And there are those who care.
I'm sorry we're not that smart.
I'm sorry we bully our ex-friends.
I'm sorry we don't follow obvious priorities.

A number of us here on this blog and outside in the weeds, put war as our first priority - and we're losing too. Some, but not all, will vote for the war to continue because of a color ( awful), a newspaper article or a petty trumped-up ideal. The hurt is deep - and we being American - the revenge is deeper.

      Selfish and righteous outweigh you.
And it's you out there. Not us.

Nothing else is as important as you coming home from doing your job. The dust won't settle in a day, and you have some time left. Hopefully, we can start the good-bye sooner rather than later.

Like you, some really don't "love a politician" or care about a false promise. Some don't care about any bill before Congress that doesn't include you.

And your wish for England, Germany, France, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Poland, Austria to help should be heard and made obvious to all. But they left and "help" falls on deaf ears. They - as republics - don't want this either. right or wrong or both.

Feel the fear and do it anyway - you're there again sadly. Be safe.

OMG. Reading your post is very heart wrenching. I'm so sorry. Our troops come first and foremost. We don't care about the taxes. To hell with that! We are so worried about you and all the troops and we want you to come home soon. Believe me, we are trying to help. Thank you for what you are doing every single day. We pray for you. Please be safe.

So right! Senator Obama's message was superior, his organization was outstanding, his candor was remarkable in the current environment, his total unruffledness and courtesy at all times, coupled with his respect for the individual, therefore all voters, were what put him over the top, but, really, they kept him in a league of his own. Thank you for so clearly defining how he won.

I love these postmortem, armchair quarterback articles which look back and purport to "analyze" everything that each campaign did "right" or "wrong". Such hindsight means very little. If Clinton had won, we would be reading articles describing all that she did right and Obama did wrong. It is true that campaigns make mistakes, but larger forces are at work in this year's Democratic primary. One is that this is simply Obama's time. He is very intelligent and charismatic and he has worked very hard to get where he is, but he is also simply in the right place at the right time. Such timing is crucial to spectacular success in any field of endeavor. Another often overlooked factor is that Hillary Clinton is a victim of the Democratic party's attempt to be absolutely fair to absolutely everybody with proportional allocation of delegates. If the Democratic party had a winner-take-all system like the Republicans do, Clinton would have won, and we would be reading articles about all the thing her campaign did so brilliantly. Hindsight is always 20-20 but rarely insightful.

    • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 06/06/2008 7:10:40 PM

If it was winner take all, Obama would have adjusted his strategy accordingly and likely still come out on top. Hillary was out maneuvered. No amount of sour grapes is going to change that.

it's like the difference between jimmy johnson and norv turner. or the difference between patton and bradley. or the difference between caesar and brutus. she's a desk jockey and he's a field marshall. she has a desk at the dmv with her nameplate on it, and he has an army of republican guards (snicker) who'd follow him to hell and back. you don't learn how to lead people by throwing ashtrays at chelsea's stepfather. you learn it in the trenches.

people like like you make me sick. You call yourself a democrat???Are you willing to put another republican in the whitehouse? This old man has changed his message so many times over the last eight years. In 2000 I would have voted mccain becaus he was a maverick a moderate replublican who voted his and spoke his mind not the party retoric. No listen to him. Becaus you are a hillary lover you will through the elction away. If she did not come out like such a B.IT.C.H with this sense of entitlement she might have won. The clinton time has passed . Either support your parties nominee or switch to independant or switch to reblican. you want hope for this country or are ready for war for generations to come.To all you hillary supporters just listen to mccain. he goes against everything you stand for.....

Good Grief, you would vote for a muslin, american hater just to put a democrat in office. Why can't we just have someone in office that is good for the country and the people. Not just a democrat or republican. God help us all with your kind of thinking.

It would have been better for Newsweek to be objective and neutral in their assessment of the Clintons. American faces the most challenging time and a future that is unclear. The Economy is at its worse and the ability of America to protect her own and defend his values is threatened by bad eceonomy, and all Newsweek could write about is the paersonal inuendo of Why He won and Why he failed. I bet that the chance of any black man to come this status in America will be blocked by Obama's failure as a preseident. There is no doubt that he will be challenged with the most pressing issues more than any recent present and , to be cool and respect voters will be far from what will be need to deal with the challenges.

    • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 06/06/2008 7:04:13 PM

It's called analysis. It's opinion hopefully based on facts and reasoning. Neutral has nothing to do with it. It's either sound analysis or it's not.

  • Posted By: Tony V @ 06/06/2008 1:58:17 PM

Alterman of all your reasons why Obama won, where the h%ll did you get "Candor." He wasn't bluntly honest as much as he was UNKNOWN and all you pro-Obama reporters gave him a pass. When the Rev. Wright issue came out, he said, "oh he's like a crazy uncle," then he said, "oh gee, I never heard anything inflammatory in MY TWENTY YEARS SITTING IN THE PEW" a big fat lie, then he said, "I could no more disown him than I could my racist white grandmother.", THEN he said, "I'm resigning from the church to protect IT FROM THE PRESS>"

    YOU CALL THAT CANDOR??????????

    • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 06/06/2008 7:01:10 PM

See his speech on race for remarkable candor on a very touchy subject. You are completely wrong.

By the way, he didn't call his grandmother a racist. He said that she sometimes is afraid of black men because of their appearance. Thats called prejudice and it exists in all of us in differing amounts. Obama had the balls to lay it out there for what it is: an obstacle to us moving forward in this country, but not an insurmountable one.

  • Posted By: over50wf @ 06/06/2008 2:51:17 PM

Five reasons; ! )Obama had the money...thanks Oprah! 2) The media jumped behind him immediately, 3) No one knew his associations until the primary was almost over. 4) The media jumped on everything Hillary had to say and twisted it. 5) He played a smart race....pulling out of Michigan because he would loose and then collecting votes he didn't have. Never the less - if he picks a good V.P. that can keep him on track... I will vote for him. If he pulls in a cronnie like Jr did, I will have to rething things!

    • Posted By: deep_eye @ 06/06/2008 5:06:52 PM

      1) ummm, no - his money came from the internet, in small, $5, $10 donations from across the country. Oprah is wealthy but even she could not do this as a solitary agent.
      2) Yes, mostly because of what he was saying and the core of his message, but don???t forget, Hill was supposed to win this going away - remember her "Wrapped up by Feb 5th comment?"
      3) Ummm, no - the Wright issue broke well before the primaries were "almost over," and the Klintonistas fanned those flames for months. The other "associations" - what was there, really? Was he making bombs with Ayers when he was 8 years old? Really?
      4) Ummm, "twisted" what, exactly?? Did the media force her to come up with the Bosnian sniper story? Was Wolf Blitzer twisting her arm to support NAFTA in the 90s? Did Brian Edwards threaten her with bodily harm if she didn???t make the "hardworking white supporters" comments?" I must have missed it when Chris Matthews threatened her with death if she did not make the "RFK assassination" insinuation. Not following your "points" here, really not...
      5) Obama never was in Michigan to "pull out of." He agreed not to be on the ballot, in deference to the DNC ruling against Michigan for moving the primary date forward.

      • Posted By: over50wf @ 06/06/2008 6:20:02 PM

he refused to be on the ballot in Michigan but he did not refuse to accept votes! They completely twisted Hillarys reference to the assisnation as she was only pointing out that several (Bill's included) campaign went well into June (a reference that many would remember without having to go to a history book)! It took the second comment from Wright (the one Obama knew would hurt his chances!) before he would denounce the man.... even if you do not agree with what is being said would you want your children to grow up hearing that...especially if you HAD any feelings for your white side???????

        • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 06/06/2008 6:57:31 PM

Both candidates agreed that Michigan and Florida wouldn't count. Only after she fell behind did Clinton flip-flop and pretend that she cared about those two states. She tried to game the system. She lost. Sometimes the good guy does win. This is one of those times.

I heard an interesting thought on talk radio yesterday...

In MLK, Jr.'s "I have a dream speech," he said "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."

The radio host said, "People aren't judging Barack Obama by his character, they are judging him by the color of his skin." (This comment was in regards to people's excitement that a black man has won the democratic nomination.)

Skin color shouldn't matter when it comes to someone being President, but yet there are articles all over the Internet with quotes from all over the world where people are praising that a person of color has the chance to be President, not a red-neck hick.

I find it very disconcerting that our presidential election has come down to the color of a person's skin and not the content of their character.

Comment: Um.. If there was not a long history consistent with chains of abuse towards people of color I would definately back your comment. Coupled with the fact only white males have held this office I think there is validity in the excitement surrounding Obama. Out of curiosity were you listening to Rush?? Was MLK not celebrated in instances because of his color?? We cannot be ignorant to reality.

Also as a regular chruch attendee at a church where the Mayor, Lt. Governor, County Clerk and several Senators are members I can vouch that politicians do NOT regularly attend, so this whole business of his association with Wright is overstated and distracts us from who is actually running, as a reminder Wright is not on the ballot.

  • Posted By: Just Us Plz! @ 06/06/2008 6:30:03 PM

Well over 50, according to the rules everyone should have been "refused" Michigans votes as they violated policy. Secondly, a person of your age should remember Bill had the nomination locked up by late March and any furhter campaigning was purely figurative. Finally as a person of mixed race which obviously you are not, we are forced into "choosing" a race at times and most of the other times it is assigned to us by others. It is not popular among children nor adolescents to not have a well defined racial identity. Hope this gives an inside perspective to your issues.

Oh, one more thing the assassination, as webster spells it was not the only time Billary injected race into this campaign... SC and candidate Andrews from Penn. can attest to this fact.

  • Posted By: over50wf @ 06/06/2008 6:12:01 PM

Come on people, it's really not about race as it is about the 20 year association with someone who is putting hate into the community, someone who is bringing up his daughters to hear the hate spewd out about the white side of his life. Read his book he chose not to tell people he had a white side. I only hope he chooses his running mate with caution. I really do want to give him my vote. NOT four more years of the same!

Excellent, accurate and fair article calling it what it is and completely in contrast to another article called 'woulda, coulda, shoulda' that seemed to say the voters sentiment had nothing to do with anything as they are only puppets in the campaigners hands. In the final analysis, Obama reached the voters and appealed to their concerns more than the Clintons did and the people simply believed and trusted Obama more. That is the way it should be!

Secondly, the fact you like ALVY and just figured the chipmunk out makes me reconsider if I can vote for Obama. I couldn't possibly agree with you about anything. You stated you didn't vote for Barack because you didn't think he could win in the general election. Wow, I'm glad most people didn't think as closed minded as you did. If so he wouldn't be the nominee right now. Sure he wouldn't win in the general election if people like you didn't vote for him. Duh! Get your priorities in check, please.

See this is the problem with a lot Obama supporters, either you are rascist or close minded if you dont choose him, I just think that Hilary was a stronger candidate on I dont know, issues like health care. I dont know why having an opinion on him not being a strong general election candidate means you are closed minded, how open is your mind?

First of all -JUST BECAUSE someone isn't voting for Obama does NOT make them racist as some so uncleverly suggest. I am an African American Educated woman who does not feel compelled to vote for someone who I feel is inexperienced simply because he is African American. That is shameful....

I think the bigger issue is that if you supported Hillary than what's the problem with supporting Obama for the overall benefit of the country. Obama and HIllary's ideas and values are almost the same. It's clear he is a very successful business man and laywer. He will surround himself (as he did in his campaign) with strong people who will help him lead this country. That what successful business people do. People keep acting he will running this country completely alone and that not true. He ran a very successful campaign, because he made the right choices.

You are full of crap. The news media is what made up the fable of the Clinton's "sense of entitlement" when in reality it wasObama who felt he was entitled simply because he had a few drops of black blood in him! The five reasons he won are easy: Biased news media, cheating at caucuses, bias by the DNC, cheating by giving Obama delegates he did NOT earn, and people like you who make up lies and derogatory comments about the Clintons. Shame on the DNC and the biased news media.

Democrats will be voting for McCain in droves!

I dont understand the immaturity of these people. We are all Democrats. When you look at McCain's record, he stands for everything that the Democratic Party does not. The Clintons have had their time and she will still be an asset to the administration. A vote for McCain is a vote for war, invasion on Iraq, the loss of more civil liberties and more tax breaks for the rich. Dems unite and lets get rid of the Republican administration!!!

LuLu if we're starting to get nasty about it, it's because we're sick of Clinton supporters telling us the sky is green and then hollering about media bias when we correct them. Obama clinched the nomination two nights ago and gave a victory speech that was extremely gracious to his opponent in spite of her kitchen-sink strategy (her campaign's words for it) threatening to sink his chances in the general. Hillary, with full knowledge of the contents of Obama's speech, rather than concede, chose to lamely compliment Obama's campaign efforts without one kind word about his value as a presidential nominee and continued to plug herself and her campaign website, just in case a few hundred delegates should suddenly decide to change their minds or Obama should get assassinated.

If that's not self-entitlement you need to tell me what is because the media didn't need to tell me what was up with that. Hillary is too smart to not realize the damage she's doing to the DFL's chances in the fall. I used to respect her but she has turned into a megalomaniac over her desire to become the first woman president and her campaign has revealed that it would be disastrous to give in to her or her supporters desires. Obama has won this thing with the odds against him. The media did not unfairly support him when they blew Wright, Rezko and the now almost-forgotten bittergate way out of proportion and context. ABC news was not plugging for Obama when they asked him about flag lapel pins, and the rest of the garbage at a "debate."

You lost. Suck it up and start being honest with yourself.

Enter Your Commenti understand you being hurt by the bush adm. and i can see how your not happy by hillary but i've found that obama is somewhat like hillary except on a smaller scale i've read how he knocked peole out of running in chicago instead of running the race fair and square and letting the voters choose who they wanted by him being the only one on the ballot of course he would be the only choice.so it seems unfair but thats chicago politics anyway the reason i'm not going to vote for him is not because i'm racist but because he's untested in the way a country needs to be ran yeah i agree he has good ideas. but so do i and i can say i'm not able to run this country ! its the only problem he has but its a big one ..... after all this country is in a mess and i just can't see some one with so little experiance as able to do the job at hand.. after all he is a jr senator and a community organizer right ???how does that qualify him to run and repair this country ?

Whoa! Die-hard Clinton lover, are we? It's time to focus on what's more important: healing the division in the Democratic party and uniting behind our candidate. Let's hope that Democrats don't go voting for McCain in droves - that's like cutting your nose off to spite your face. Even if people are mad that they don't have HIllary on the ticket, they're still choosing the "lesser" of 2 evils by voting for Obama. Nobody in their right mind wants another 4 years of Bush - I mean, McCain, well same difference anyway.

What exactly does Obama's few drops of black blood entitle him too? I just dont understand the whole he won because of some mysterious affirmeative action for president program that seems to exist, please let me know about it so I can sign my kids up

  • Posted By: JeromeH @ 06/05/2008 2:48:14 PM

I am a recent immigrant and had no prior leaning to either party. I am independent, I agree with McCain on the GI bill (benefits increase with time); I thought Huckabee had a good idea with a flat tax system (his social and religious pontificating was another thing).
I initially leaned toward Hilary, I grew up hearing the Clinton name, it was well known globally and recalled a time of peace and prosperity. However by late February I was leaning toward Obama, by April Obama had me convinced, despite all the pastor stuff.
I guess I see differently, not in blue, red, or purple connotation. In McCain I see an honorable man, an independent streak, but someone whose framework is made from the 30+ years in Washington. Think about it, if you spent 30+ years doing something, listening to the same things, power plays and gossip, how in touch would you be with anything aside from that world? I like Obama for having a balance of institutional experience (community organizer, state senator, teaching at Univ. of Chicago, US Senator and the path he followed there), and a clarity of perspective of where the common man is. He still thinks and feels what everyone else does on a day to day basis, home, prices, education, kids, and our security.
Second, I think McCain while a good man, represents a solution for America's problems for the short term, maybe a band-aid for the next 2-3 years, past the current financial crisis and maybe even Iraq. However there will be new issues for America to deal with, maybe a new war, certainly there will be long term economic concerns and a continued lack of direction for what the future holds. In Obama I see solution to the near-term and a generational change in how we as Americans define ourselves as people and our destiny as a world leader now and in the future. It requires a change in thought, vision, dreams, skills, and strategy combined with a lot of hard work, a belief in the nation, our immense possibilities, and in us as people of this land. To put it simply I see the next 30-50 years becoming clearer with that generational change, with McCain I see short-term.
I pictured McCain and Obama as the President, and it hit me, this is one of those pivotal points in history, not cause Obama is black, it is because what his being president would mean for us and the value from the fresh influx of ideas, perspectives, determination and energy means to America???s future. Four years ago, or even eight I would have leaned to McCain, they were different times, we were different people, and priorities were different. Now it seems with a growing China, India, a posturing Russia and changes all over, it???s time for America to grow and adapt to the world and regain its place as the one place where a young boy looks to and thinks??? I want to be a part of that. That was me many years ago, and that is what I hope can be regained after the disaster that has been the last 8 years.

    • Posted By: Hawaii08 @ 06/05/2008 3:26:40 PM

Okay Jerome if after 30 years of listening to the same thing in Washington puts McCain out of touch, doesn't 20 years of listening to Wright's hatred & vitriole put Obama out of touch? Hello? He told people to lay off of his wife.... it was big news and he was a helluva guy. Bill Clinton speaks up for his wife, and he is ostracized yet again. Barack Obama is playing the race card MORE than anyone on this blog or in this country, because he knows that everything said to or about him, will be scrutinized for racial overtones. Again, this is how he won. Yes, the younger generation likes big words and change, and just like us when we were 18, they don't have a clue. But the party leaders and older people were afraid not to nominate him, for fear of the African-American reaction. They pretend that we are all equal and America has come a long way, but they still expect us African-Americans to act like savages if we get upset. Some will, but it is not the majority and it should NEVER drive a nomination. So tragic! Like the IQ of chindognyc amd combymax.... the twin terrors or pseudo-intelligence in the blogosphere.... OMG!

I am just past 30. I am married, and I have lived through prejudice and racism too. I also know that my faith, and my values are not 100% matched by my church. So what do I do? Leave it? Some denominations says no to condoms, others to other aspects. Just like there are no perfect people, there is no perfect religion because they evolve too, over time. I also have people in my life who have said ridiculous things, we all have a family member, friend, or even a professor who taught us many good things but said a couple of odd ball stuff who made us cringe. Wright was not the United trinity church, and he was not Obama's personal diety. I separate the man from his pastor, I will admit, it concerned me when I heard it, I also heard Obama's speech on race, I also watched his demeanor all through a bruising primary, I believe he is the real deal, he has flaws, as we all do, but the man is a leader worth following. What do we gain by electing a short-term solution. The time I think is for America to redefine itself. Our motives in Iraq are not the noble ones that gave us our stature post WWIII, our manufacturing industry is mostly in China, my phone is answered by a support person in India, my oil comes from the middle east, our scientific progress is slowing down, the country that started the internet is not even in the top 5 for internet infrastructure. We have many strengths and the biggest is our people and our consistent influx of new ideas, either through leadership, sheer determination or welcoming new people in. When I travel overseas I hear how America's time is past, its Asia's time now or something else. Sure they deserve their growth and they deserve their prosperity, but America made the world's future in the last 150 years possible. We can be more, we can lead, with ideas, with innovation, in industry, science, healthcare and much more. That is my hope, that is why I am in support of a that transcending change.
I respect Hillary, I think she would have been a great president too, maybe not insipiring the generational transition America needs, but a solid step to the future nonetheless. She is not the nominee, she did make a few missteps, most of all I think she did not tap into the underlying disgust with the status quo and being told by all that we are arrogant, we are past our prime and so much more. How are we do that with ideas from the 90s or from the 70s when McCain was part of normal everyday society?
Are we so caught up in our choice for leader and our anger that we lose sight of what is most important? Its about America and its future, for me, my kids, and to watch us grow with strength, peace and prosperity. I do not know if the media is biased or not, but I try to form my opinions from nuance and substance, not sound bites, if I did, I might be mad at a lot of things for a long time.

From the moment you graduate basic training or are accessed onto acitve duty (officers) you can go to Iraq. You don't get a first term "bye" nor will the IED wait until you've reupped before it detonates near you. Equal risk, equal benefits simple as that to me.

hmmm... let's see... some other reasons clinton lost....

the boys in the media and corporate world ganged up against the woman (go back and look to the debates if you dont believe me)

the media gave Obama pretty much a free pass in the early months... Wright was saying his vitriole years ago but since the media was only scrutinizing Clinton it took them ages to notice (again, if you dont believe that the media was being harder on her, how long they took about the Wright stuff tells the real story)

obama was allowed to get by with lots of grand words and ideas and no actual policy or plans or scrutiny until it was too late in the primaries to stop the momentum

hope he lives up to everyone's ideals, cuz now we're stuck with the guy that NO ONE TRULY TESTED UNTIL RECENTLY. and he came through ok... but he also came across as bitter, annoyed, and frustrated whenever he was questioned. tat's not going to go over well in the general election.
    boy better man up.

He won even with asses like you voting the other way.
Loved the "boy" - never saw that coming idiot.

Oh. She lost because of her mouth and the dead bodies on her wake.
Nice user-name. Optimistic, but very uninformed.

You are the uninformed - Voting is ALL ABOUT folks judging the merits and determining what works for THEM! - and by the way -I;m educated, female and African American!

To put it bluntly, you´re a big pretender, a fraud!

I think most of us would have "noticed" the "boy" first.

This is pathetic. The debates? Like the last one with Stephanopolous? All you Clintonistas do is parrot Hillary's talking points until you're blue in the face. Do you even have the slightest idea of what's going on? Did you miss the Daily Show the other night when he played like 50 comments in a row from the media telling Obama to quit while he's ahead and that Hillary was the inevitable candidate? Was your head up your butt during "bitter" gate? The whole lot of you do more to reinforce negative stereotypes of women through your actions and words. Thank god you don't represent most women as you are indeed devoid of accountability and reason.

Boy it AIN'T hard to tell that you are slow or stupid... This is what's really funny. You have these arm-chair wacko's who, in the face of common (maybe not so common) sense, still persist to get on the internet and talk shhhhh... I don't know who you are but you really should stop being a negative knut-sack and either get on board or vote for McCain't... Either way, you and these other piece's of ........ work should really consider, SHUTTING THE PH:)Q-UP...

That's the problem with the Internet... You have all of these morons expressing views that they wouldn't dare utter in public... and why... because they would publicly be viewed as a total lazzolez (at best).... or... Somebody would probably split their none-stop, flapping lips...

SO PLEASE JUST VOTE MC'CAINT AND SHUT THE PH:)Q-UP.... THAT OLD TRAITOR, SLASH PHART WON'T WIN ANYWAY AND SO, FOR A 2ND TIME (surely not in your life but during this campaign), YOU WILL, BE EXPOSED AS THE "KNOW-NOTHING-DUMASS" THAT YOU AND I BOTH, KNOW YOU ARE... :)

Good call on the Democratic Primary DUMASS:)

Make some more predictions... WE ALL WILL THEN KNOW TO PICK THE ONE THAT IS CONTRARY TO YOUR CRACK INDUCED SELECTION...

-This message was brought to you by TRUE AMERICANS AGAINST STUPIDITY...
