Why Clinton lost: Hillary lost because she played the race card and the sexism card. She mined deep divides in the electorate--"embittered"-rural, -white, -uneducated, -female--while profaning sacrosanct themes to do it: "slavery," "white people," "Zimbabwe," "Seneca Falls," "assassination". She was shameless, ruthless, prideful.

And we let her get away with it. Even now, we're allowing her to just "suspend" her campaign. What have we wrought? A monster.

Very insightful and true article. I was going for Hilary at the beginning of the campaign, but her and Bill's obnoxious sense of supremacy and entitlement posted a red flag to me that we were not going to get what she was trying to sell...at a high cost. Very smart and eloquent woman, with blind folded sense of judgement. I did not want to get another 4 years of Bill and his special interests.
A more clean slate nominee is what americans are looking for.

liar liar, don't say her 18 million supporters will not vote Obama, have you seen some supporters on the news lately they are backing Obama. So if you want to flip flop over to another party to go against everything your candidate Hillary stands for, you go do that. You are must likely a republican anyone posing as a democrat. You know that has been going on lately on these blogs, We have been warned about this. So stop trying to convince people that all Hillary supporters have your view. YOUR LYING. My chat who has thousands signed up states they will support Obama, so stop with the 18 million lie -PLEASE it wont happen, we seek change over you trying to divide the party for personal reasons. Your feeling are that hurt Hillary loss, I cant wait until tomorrow when she announces her support of the party. GOOD BYE

Great analysis of cause & effect. On target to be sure. I also thought Obama presented freshness. Raising $1million a day since beginning of the year suggets a special appeal to voters was there all the time. Having witnessed the Russian elections, Pakistani elections, Kenya & Zimbabwe elections etc the feeling among us Africans is that we need to learn/appreciate a great deal from USA approach to democracy. The opposition is not demonised to gaol. Thumbs up. African leaders should hang their heads in shame, because they love travelling overseas, and the only value they embrace there is shopping. Sickening staff.

Let's see, I bet you hate smart women and don't really like anyone, including yourself .If you could be honest ,but seeing as how you are so full of yourself II don't see that happening. I bet you keep to yourself alot.

Obviously, you didn't read the writer's objective analysis. The truth of the matter is: Obama turned out to be the better manager and, therefore, he's reaping the rewards--the nomination. To state this as fact doesn???t (and would not) deride an intelligent and capable woman, such as Clinton. Your disillusionment is understandable. It sucks that two, well-qualified ???minorities??????and African American Man and a Woman had to content against one another to lead the country under what would virtually be an identical political agenda. Only one person could win. That???s the system. If Clinton had won, there???s no doubt there???d be bitterness from Obama supporters, but, rest assured???a reasoned person would recognize that either candidate would definitely deliver on what the country needs. Keep your vitriol ad homen attacks to yourself, and deal with the facts.

My opinion of why Hillary lost is:
    1. She hired supporters instead of experienced managers.
    2. Wrong message.
    3. She didn't manage the campaign well from personnel to finances.
    4. Dirty politics and lies.
    5. Her message was always about her, her experience, her this, her that, and never about the voters.

Listen up Dems, Mod Republicans and Indys! If this presistant in-fighting doesn't stop, we will all pay the price of letting our emotions get in the way of what's truly important. We are allowing our personal attachments to each of these candidates hinder us from doing what is right in this country and in the world. The reality is it comes down to style choice, because Obama and HRC are basically the same in their viewpoints. I started liking both candidates, with a slight lean towards HRC. After getting to know Obama and based on how HRC handled her campaign, I switched to Obama. If Hillary were the nominee, I would vote her. We are on this blog and many others agruing with people will never meet (that's probably a good thing). However, I believe most of us want what's right and good for this country and it's people. We all need to put the petty (and they are petty) differences aside and try to work together and bring this party back in check. We all feel strongly about our candidates, but to say that you would cross your party lines to vote for someone McCain is wrong. If you voted for Hillary in the first place, than how can you possibly have any in common with McCain. He stands for everything that she says shes against. This has gotten waaaaay too personal for people. The fact is HRC will be just fine not being president, and if Obama hadn't gotten the nomination, he would have been fine as well. The reality is there will be other chances for a woman to become president. It's not a one time shot. Chances are HRC will run again and maybe she can learn from the mistakes she made this time around. We need to stop this and join together. I know that there many HRC supporters who will support Obama in November and that is the responsible thing to do. This country is a mess and there are many Republicans are loving this. They are sitting back and laughing at us. We are doing all of their dirty work for them. Don't get into fights with pigs, because all you do is get dirty and the pig likes it. Stop this madness. It breaks my heart to read the messages in these blogs.

This is a good analysis of the Democratic primary. Hillary could be a power for the good for the Democrats if she accepts the loss, acknowledges it fully and graciously, and leads the charge to get out the vote for the Democrats in November. I have heard that she is gracious as a human being, so I think she has it in her to do it. She has to get rid of Bill, though, because that guy is bad for her. She can stand on her own politically (without Bill) and lead the charge for important policies in the Senate (for healthcare, for example). I myself think she would be best as a Supreme Court justice. What about initiating governance and policy education for our young girls and young women, to train up a larger pool of female politicians for the future? There are many ways Hillary could be constructive and powerful, but conceding fully and fairly to Obama is the first step.

    • Posted By: termlife @ 06/06/2008 8:51:13 AM

This was a decent and fair assessment of what went wrong with Hillary's campaign. I also feel she should not be his choice for vice-president. Hillary is not a number two person. She would undermine his agenda. She missed a one moment in history to graciously acknowledge his victory and encourage her supporters to rally behind him to get a Democrat back into the White House. I'm not a Hillary Clinton fan but she could be a force in Obama's administration in the area of health care - something near and dear to her heart. Let's hope she has the courage to accept her loss gracefully and rally her supporters to get behind Barak Obama's bid for the presidency.

Mr Alter, BTW, thanks fpr many of your analyses, they are, most of the times, accurate and restrained, it is appreciated with all the spinning around in the press...I agree w/your approach today, mostly based on personal perception almost of the candidates, at least In Clinton's case..I think we can def add her vote for the war as a major issue Barack could draw contrast from, even if she ahd admitted this mistake..
I think mostly the problem for Hilalry was Barack Obama
Who could have imagined that such an incredible, brilliant, innovative politician w/unmatched charisma and poise would come along and take our world by storm???
In such troubled times for our country and the world , such a superior man was destiny and truly our only hope of some change of direction

  • Posted By: Spinner @ 06/06/2008 7:07:37 AM

Well done, Jonathan Alter. Great piece of writing.

Hawaii, please don't feel that all Obama supporters are name-callers, as some here are. I know quite a bit about Barack Obama, and he is what he says he is...a good man who will try his best for the people of this country. I, too, come from a family of several different cultures, and that is a very good thing. It gives one a different perspective, doesn't it? I think that will be one of the things that makes Barack a good leader. He may not be able to do everything he wants to do to help this country (because of Congress), but he will do his very best.

Hillary was a nasty, lying, self-absorbed, whiney, disillusioned, temper tantrum throwing poor excuse for a democratic politician.

She has the traits and characteristics of a republican. At times she sounded like, Rush Limpbaugh, Bill O'really, Ann "the man" Coulter and Sean Insanity and with her support for the war in Iraq, she showed the wisdom of this countries most ignorant politician in history...GWB.

    Hilary is a camouflaged republican!

Clinton lost ? Could have fooled me. She won more of the popular vote. The DNC gave Obama a bunch of unearned delegates. All the votes weren't counted. The malicious media bit into Hillary Clinton like a pitbull.
Its pretty basic to see why Obama is where he is and to see where Hillary Clinton is.

    • Posted By: deep_eye @ 06/05/2008 11:11:09 PM

I suspect that a lot "fools you." Let's review shall we?
      1) She DID NOT win more of the popular vote, please stop this LIE....'k?
      2) She had FEWER delegates than Obama
      3) She won FEWER states than Obama.

1+2+3 = BIG LOSER - get it now?? Go have a brew, up there in "Canada"

      • Posted By: Shadoe01 @ 06/06/2008 4:49:33 AM

If the Democrats had a system like the Republicans, Hillary would have won big time months ago. What she said is true that she can get the states that count not all the "Republican" states that Obama won.

Shad0e01 if you support hillary fine that is your right. But these old arguments are soo lame it is embarrassing for her supporters to make. FACT: Yes how the Dem election went if run by GOP rules hillary maay have won. BUT and a big BUTT here. The Dem primary was not run like the GOPS. Hillary had people at top of her campaign that actually wrote the DEM primary rules. Ie... Harold Ickes. Hillary's main strategy was to win the big states. Obama studied the Dem rules and mapped out a winning strategy based on those rules. If the dem rules were written like the GOPS. How do you know Obama's campaign strategy would not have been totally different and he may have still won? Why can't you just accept the truth it was close but Obama out campaigned a campaign going in that was the favorite. Ala Giants beating the Patriots. If Obama was Giants and hillary the patriots. One could see after game Patriots complaining that Giants Defense should not have been able to blitz like in the Pro Bowl which does not allow blitzing.

    • Posted By: marksgershenson @ 06/06/2008 1:39:52 AM

you won't give up will you with your nonsense. Sit back and relax and let's see how the election pans out. Your candidate McSame is going to have many problems against Obama. The Republicans of the old establishment still haven't figured out the sentiment of the country. If you are truly in Canada, why would you be so worried about who wins? I doubt that you are living there....your probably one of Limbaugh's agents....LMAO...I must say your commentary is very entertaining and great for a laugh or two.

I think your analysis is right on. i would add a few lies like Bosnia, adiitionally hurt her credibilty and Bill Clinton was alot worse for her.

  • Posted By: walterneff @ 06/05/2008 6:11:49 PM

You are exactly correct, Jon. Hillary lost for all of the reasons you state, and more. However, don't expect most of her supporters to believe it. They're as paranoid and delusional as she is. Read mateasel's comments, for example. According to this post, Obama won Iowa because of a "small group of voters." A small group? He swept the state. Moreover, where was the "strong support of blacks" in a state as white as Iowa? As far as Obama being helped by states that "shifted demographically" it's apparent that mateasel has no clue as to what "demographics" means. They don't shift over a period of hours or days, like storm clouds. These comments are typical of the most embittered Clinton supporters who resolutely WILL not see any fault in Hillary, no matter how blatant. They lack the honesty and maturity to see her as she really is. Instead, as they spin the story, her loss is the result of conspiracies by media types, blacks, Republican operatives, sexist males or you-fill-in-the-blank.

    • Posted By: Shadoe01 @ 06/06/2008 5:11:22 AM

Yeah, he won before the truth came out about him. I can't wait for the video to come out with "Mrs. I am So Really Proud of My Country for the FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE" to come out with her calling Bill Clinton a whitey. You can tell of course that she listened to Rev. Wright.

I was enlightened regarding the Clintons early last July at an IA event. Her handlers and field organizers were arrogant and pushy when they came to town and frankly presented a very poorly planned event. It was held on the banks of the Mississippi River on a VERY hot day with no consideration for the glaring hot sun and heat. I am still wondering how a whole bunch of OLD women did not die of heat stroke that day!!! When they pushed me to sign a pledge card I refused and finally admitted I was there to help and did not care to divulge the candidate I supported. There insistence was disrespectful and offensive. I told them I was supporting Obama and for the remainder of a very hot day they simply used and abused me and other volunteers and never acknowledged our efforts. The Obama campaign was and still is the antithisis of Clinton's. OBAMA '08, We can't wait!

    • Posted By: Shadoe01 @ 06/06/2008 4:58:13 AM

If you were stupid enough to let yourself get used by anyone than it is you own fault, but somehow I think you are full of it.

  • Posted By: rainbow68 @ 06/05/2008 10:19:49 PM

I don't know that it was all media tilting in favor for Obama. CNN seemed very much behind Clinton. MSNBC was obviously, pro-Obama. Even I'll admit that. But the Clintons enjoyed a very long, very cozy relationship with the media themselves.

    • Posted By: Shadoe01 @ 06/06/2008 4:54:27 AM

I guess you did watch the shows where the reporters repeatedly stated (live on the air) that they did go after HIllary all the time and they were three men from the major networks. Try to keep your facts straight and truthful.

  • Posted By: Ellin @ 06/06/2008 2:56:24 AM

The ruling class, (white men) who wrote their constituion gave the black "man" the right to vote before they gave the same right to "women" of any color. While in law school, I concluded that there would not be a woman president before a black man. This presidential nomination has not been a "race" issue. It clearly rested on gender. It's still a man's world, but "bravo" to Hillary' for her gallant effort and fortitude!

    • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 06/06/2008 4:46:40 AM

It's a charismatic man's world. Come up with a charismatic woman and we'll have a real race.

It's all relative. HRC would have creamed Kerry by the way.

Your comment is not 100% fair. Clinton has so much talent made you and other jelous, then support a wrong man, Obama. Anybody support President Bush ever say a regret word?? Next 6 months or next 4 years , what would you say to that haft muslim-haft fake pro-Jesus and anti-American who would be your leader ?

your still at it with your poisoned commentary? wow, I know there are racists and bigots in our country, but so sad that this person is so scared of a black person, and I am white...spew your hatred if you must, but I feel sorry for your misguided ways and the obvious hatred you have....we are not in the dark ages, welcome to the 21st century

  • Posted By: over50wf @ 06/06/2008 1:10:35 AM

First reason...because Obama is a good speaker! It reminds when Carter ran...he ran for change and we were ready for it. I was young and nieve and believed, but he was inexperienced and couldn't get anything done. They young are the main Obama supporters and he lacks experiences. Anyway if you started the nominations over agin, I believe Hillary would win after all that has come out about Obama and his associations.

    • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 06/06/2008 2:03:37 AM

Carter's failure was that he was a good man, but a lousy politician. As far as political savvy, Obama is 10,000 times the politician that Carter was. He knows how to get things done and set the right tone. We may not like it, but politics is no place for a truly "nice guy". It takes some cajones. Obama has proven he has them in spades.
