This is not a historical election ... just another one taken.
This is not a historical election ... just another one taken.
Taken by whom? Obama? What does this mean? It sounds like you are implying that he somehow rigged the system or otherwise worked around the rules, when in reality the exact opposite is true: Obama's team understood the rules and their implications and played by them the whole way.
Clinton's team, on the other hand, did not, and when the rules -- that they agreed to before this all started, mind you -- didn't favor them, they tried to change them. If anyone was trying to "take" the election, it was Hillary!
Don't give me any stuff like "the superdelegates handed it to him!" With neither candidate winning enough of the "normal" delegates to take the nomination, the SDs had to "hand" it to one of them. Just because you don't like their decision doesn't make it unfair.
Or maybe you think the whole SD thing is unfair? That the candidate who got the most delegates should win? That was Obama, too, if you weren't paying attention.
Or maybe you think the whole delegate thing is unfair? That the candidate who got the most votes should win? That was likely Obama, too, though we'll never really know, since the caucus states didn't report their vote totals.
Or maybe you think the whole VOTING thing is unfair, that Hillary should just have been granted the nomination. Actually this is likely what a lot of HRC supporters DO think, they're just not honest enough to come out and say it.
Face it, by any and all normal landmarks, she lost. Grumbling about how the election was "taken" is just plain idiotic.
Really, why don't you questions the delegates about their little talks where they stated and it was printed in the paper, that they did not want to disillusion the black or the young voters. They felt if they did not give their votes to Obama, they would loose their offices when it came time for their re-election.
I'll vote for John McClain...I am not ready for a Michelle obama....
Excellent article.
Had this been any other year, any other election, Clinton would've cruised to victory. However, she failed to recognize the desire for change that was sweeping much of the party, and frankly, she was running against a political phenomenom the likes of which we have never seen: Obama. Hillary definately goofed up in some ways, but Obama deserves a lot of credit for being able to throw many of the old rules of politics out in the trash and keep himself in the race.
Great Post!
While I understand you are clearly a Clinton supporter, please do not dismiss the hard work the Obama did to gain victory. Clinton had this nomination in the bag and because of poor strategy and pure arrogance that the superdelegates will automatically choose her, she lost it all by herself. She has no one to blame but her and her failed campaign strategies.
At least we all agree this article is dubious, it is obvious from previous readings the author is a staunch clintonista and this is her last hurrah, let the women have her moment we have an election to win!
Sort of unfair to boil down Obama's caucus state success to Idaho. What about Washington State, which will go Democratic (though it becomes a swing state if Clinton, instead of Obama, is polled against McCain)? And it is not as if he didn't win any not-small-state primaries. Wisconsin, Oregon, North Carolina, were landslides.
Eleanor,
Stating that if the Democratic primary were structured like the Republican's, the result would have been Hillary winning the nomination is false and bad journalism. Same thing regarding your statement about Obama outorganizing her in caucus states.
This election was Hillary's to lose and she did just that due to inferior campaign tactics and an assumption that the game was already won before the starting bell even sounded. While Hillary was taking her pre-contest victory lap, Obama was developing a strategy based on, believe it or not, the structure and rules of the contest! If the structure had been different, Obama's strategy would have been different. If the structure was the same as the Republican primary, he would have focused more on California, Texas, Michigan and Florida and less on Iowa and all the caucus states.
Hillary's 2008 campaign will go down in history as a prime example of how NOT to get elected. Things have certainly changed in the Clinton family since 1992! Where once, the Clintons were fresh, talented and hungry; now they have become the establishment they once railed against. They are entrenched, stale and arrogant.
Hillary deserved to lose this contest. She figured she could reap the rewards without putting in the work. Once she realized the American public wasn't going to just hand her the job without her having to interview for it, she was already too far behind to catch up. Obama, on the other hand, ran as if he knew his success could only come through hard work, brilliant planning and a reliable team.
The examples are numerous. While Obama was putting together a grass roots effort to energize the traditionally crony-dominated caucuses via a youth movement, Hillary was standing around while Mark Penn developed a strategy based on the mind-blowingly ignorant assumption that the Democratic primaries WERE winner-take-all, like the Republican's.
Again. When Obama was planning the second half of the primariy season following super Tuesday, Hillary's campaign failed to plan any post-super events based on another breathtakingly incompetent assumption that they would have secured the nomination come Tuesday despite Obama's massive momentum. Lo and behold, due to gross negligence, they suddenly found themselves with too little cash and no plan to increase the flow. They immediately went into catch-up mode while Obama was cruising full speed ahead.
Say what you will about what would have been if structures were different. It seems to me that it wasn't the structure that determined the outcome of this race, but the willingness to work for what you want. While Hillary spent her time complaining about the system, Obama studied and worked within the system.
He who works the hardest and the smartest, generally wins. She who assumes an outcome and tries to get by with the least effort possible, generally whines.
I hope Hillary Clinton DOES hold onto her delegates and have her name placed in nomination at the DNC in the fall. I would love to see that....she has earned that much!
