This war should have never been started. It was because of our ass-hole president Bush who only knows how to lie. Under these circumstances, I wouldn't go to war either. The hell with Bush. He's a disgrace to this country and the American people. He should have been impeached years ago for all the lying he has done. Our troops ought to come home and say the hell with you Bush, you're nothing but a liar.

    Sky News: http://news.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,30200-1317463,00.html

Scott McClellan, former White House Press Secretary (2003-2006) for President George W. Bush:

"As I have heard Bush say, only a wartime president is likely to achieve greatness," he writes in his book, "What Happened." "In Iraq, Bush saw his opportunity to create a legacy of greatness."

But Mr McClellan added that "war should only be waged when necessary, and the Iraq war was not necessary". He said: "Waging an unnecessary war is a grave mistake.

"Supporters of Mr Bush have rounded on Mr McClellan, describing the book as a betrayal. The author writes that the US president wanted to topple Saddam Hussein "primarily for the ambitious purpose of transforming the Middle East".

If there is a case to be made that Iraq represents a real threat to the national security of America worthy of war, then it needs to be made as soon as possible.

But if a case cannot be made on national security grounds, then one must consider the real possibility that the administration's drive for war with Iraq is being pursued in support of a domestic political agenda, something that should concern all Americans, regardless of political affiliation.

The brave men and women in our armed forces have demonstrated their willingness to make the ultimate sacrifice so that our democracy can be preserved. To ask them to do so in support of politically driven motives would not only disrespect those to whom we look for protection, but also dishonor American democracy as a whole. It is up to our nation as a whole to ensure that is not, and never will be, the case.

Scott Ritter, a former Marine and U.N. weapons inspector, is author of Endgame: Solving the Iraq Problem -- Once and For All (Simon & Schuster, 1999).

Duty, Honor, Country. These brave men answer the call of their country. Again and again they go as ordered. Add another word, Family, and the task becomes even harder, yet they respond. There are none braver, none more devout than the American soldier. God bless America!

  • Posted By: driver8 @ 06/08/2008 3:05:46 PM

Duty, Honor, Country. There are none braver, than those that go again and again. Add the word Family, and the task becomes monumental. Still the brave answer the call, it is their duty. God bless America.

Elspeth Ritchie can shut her mouth. Blaming the cause for self infliction on the families of soldiers. I'd like to see that *** in combat instead of running her mouth to defend the Army and it's useless cause. May I ask, what's the difference between paying someone to shoot you in the knee versus going to Iraq with a possible chance of getting shot in the head. It seems to me that going to iraq has a probability for death at 50% where as paying someone to shoot you that won't cause so much harm.

I'm sorry, but if a soldier is depressed or fearing deployment, the army will only want to put that soldier on medication and maybe 'delay' your deployment. The "we're definitely concerned" remark is hypocritical. Comparing both issues at mind and deciding which is more dangerous, I find it VERY hypocritical for this *** to think that they are concerned. "No, they're death would be for a good cause" -- since when did we all assume we can be this jesus dude?

Will somebody tell John McHundred that this is what is happening to our young brave men and women, the cause is the 2,3,4 or 5 tour of duties in a never ending war, if ever a gift is handed to Sen. Obama to go after Sen. McCain this is it.

    • Posted By: ChicoCDM @ 06/08/2008 2:28:27 PM

This is a stupid talking point - maybe you should listen to what McCain says in its entirety as well as what Obama says in his entirety. BOTTOM LINE - Obama and you are stuck on stupid - argueing over why Bush and four years ago is just a waste - WE ARE THERE!! We need a sensible way out. Have you heard Obama's "if things get bad again we can alwayd go back." Heard that one? GO BACK!!!?? Lets get it right ONCE and FOR all - one mistake should not be countered with another. WE ALL CARE ABOUT OUR TROOPS AND OUR COUNTRY! But extreme RISKs should not but substituted for CHANGE or HOPE.

Johnt66 - Wait until word becomes public knowledge of the equipment deterioration and lack of replacement. Another gift!

"Bottom line is if you really dont want to go, you're not going, nobody wants to have to depend on a guy that doesnt want to do his job....." rif2422 @ 06/08/2008 12:57:18 PM
True, you get a courts martial and prison time for disobeying a lawful order during a time of war, if you don't want to go. But, I guess I'd rather want to endure that as opposed to self-injury. There was a time when you would have been executed, so self-injury was the better option. But, I'm not sure that all do know what they're getting themselves into until in the situation.

WOW newswekk all time low disgusting

I'd rather see them off themselves than follow the shrub. But I'd rather they desert...

  • Posted By: acrees4 @ 06/08/2008 9:35:36 AM

First off, it is documented that 7500 deaths occurred ( accidents and suicides) during the Clinton years. In peacetime. The military is dangeous. That said, we are indeed placing an undue burden on a few. They are away from home and family while we are having our little chat. I wouldn't have thought it a couple of years ago, but I think the soldiers are going to get it done. As far as the draft, Socialists don't get to power with war, but creating and maintaining dependence.

"As far as the draft, Socialists don't get to power with war, but creating and maintaining dependence."

Um, I think you're confusing communism with socilalism; they are mutually exclusive and hardly the same thing.

    • Posted By: chiefagc @ 06/08/2008 11:52:44 AM

You're full of BS. We haven't had that many7 deaths in dumbya's WAR? Righties are lying a holes.

He who lives by the sword, shall perish by the sword.

The Words of GOD ring true today as they did centuries ago.

    Amen.

    • Posted By: KD Denton @ 06/08/2008 11:59:02 AM

I don't see GOD donning his ACH and IBA and going to Iraq or Afghanistan, or do you?

No, a truer saying would be that old men start wars, young men fight them. THAT axiom is a far older sentiment and definitely holds more truth.

How can you impliment a draft when it is still "illegal" for some to serve (homosexuals, etc). There are so many outdated stipulations that a draft would be pointless. Some of those "volunteers" raised their hand to serve and protect our country only to be turned away. Until the government recognizes that people of all walks of life (homosexuals) believe in protecting our country - they can not enforce a draft.

    • Posted By: OBWan @ 06/08/2008 11:54:42 AM

There was a draft for VietNam many people of all walks of life were excluded. The big place for the those not wanting to go to VietNam was the National Guard, especially those "Fortunate Sons". I really do not see your point - I remember the draft very well, draft number 363.

Good and decent people have reached the point where they are broken. In many cases, Also, suspect this is not always a case of mental crisis, but a case of logical self preservation. There is no mission to believe in and no tour worth loosing your life and being forced to take another's life in Iraq. It has been written by many soldiers that they deploy only to be there for their fellow soldiers, not because they believe in Bush's War. How many tours can these people endure? How many years can we ask them to be absent from their families?

  • Posted By: COVO @ 06/08/2008 11:24:00 AM

It isn't documented that 7500 troops died during Clinton's terms. That is just right wing bull ***. Not one soldier died in Kosovo. Yes there were training accidents but 7500....what a joke. Before you spew stuff like this and state as fact....find a source.

Obumer is scheduled to bring back the DRAFT in 2009. All those college kids supporting the man who will draft them in the army. No one to protest because all the draftees voted for Obumer. Now they are army slaves. Great irony.

    Intelligence analyst: Getzel

Where are you getting this information so that we can fact check it. The return of a draft must be passed by Congress. Everyone learns that fact in the sixth grade.

  • Posted By: Peter102 @ 06/08/2008 10:03:53 AM

To acees4: You say, "it is documented." Tell us where? and by whom? so we can check your "facts."
