if you think the pain is bad now, just wait. it is clear to most thoughtful analysts, that america is in free-fall decline in every respect, and likely, all of this is quite irreversible. travel abroad and see for yourself that the playing field is now becoming level, from europe to asia. so, not only has bush/mccain irrational thinking in every realm helped accelerate america's decline (and hastened the rise of competitor economies), but the world economy has also changed in that regard. there is little you can do now except stem the flow of the rising tide and hope for the best. indeed, your only hope (i.e., as americans) is in fact HOPE (i.e., like it or not, the value of an obama presidency - re: improved global image / global consumer sentiment, with more progressive and thoughful foreign and domestic policies, even if ever-so-slight - may be far greater than you think). so, to JWSB, "Christians in general, and most U.S. voters would rather give their suffrage in the G.E. to McCain, the lesser of the two evils" i suggest you think again...look where that thinking has got you so far...just extrapolate your logic a bit now, and then judge what is truly in the best interests of your young people.

Wow...what a bunch of bitter winers. Quit looking for someone else to solve your problems and lead you to a better life. Learn to do something for yourself. The problem with our socieity is this inflated sense of importance and entitlements...those that rage against it the most are the worst perpetrators.

The real initial problem that has cause all the turmoil comes from the out sourcing to thriving countries. If any one is to blame it is the corporations cutting corners by producing cheaper items and cheaper labor by countries booming to a point where they need as much resouces as we do.
Want to fix this? Close the borders to all imports and lets go back to a working America to use our own resources. Think about it and see if this fits into your puzzle.

    • Posted By: joe_mama @ 06/09/2008 8:13:12 AM

Cutting off imports will not do anything. The exporting countries will retaliate by cutting US products and the U.S. economy will suffer a net loss.

Perhaps you should brush up on your Economics 101 before making such inane suggestions.

Capitalism (which, btw, we exported to Japan, China and India) doesn't care about recession or lost jobs. Capitalism is all about maximizing efficiency. As long as it's more efficient (i.e. cheaper) to export jobs overseas, they will continue to be exported. Trade barriers are, by definition, contrary to the goals of capitalism as they impose artificial costs onto producst and/or services.

Finally, capitalism doesn't care if you're out of work, or if credit is tight. Capitalism says, "just be more efficient and everything will work out in the end". That's why you see this "correction" in the housing and credit markets....it's capitalism at its work.

For the record, I was an econ major and I believe in capitalism. I just don't share the false perception that most Americans (indeed, most westerners) have: mainly, that capitalism is the best thing ever and that it can solve all socio-economic ills.

BTW--in terms of trade barriers, we've been in a trade war with the EU since President Bush came to office. That, as much as anything, has pushed the economy to the edge.

The only real solution is to allow those economies to grow to the point where their costs of living pushes up their fixed labor costs. Look at Japan. It happened there and eventually China will get there.

weak dollar and no credit, recipe for disaster

    • Posted By: joe_mama @ 06/09/2008 7:58:11 AM

Agreed, particularly on the credit issue.

As a small business owner, I've gotten the triple whammy: my customers (who took those bad loans and too many credit cards) don't have money left to buy my product; the interest on my line of credit increased (meaning higher payments); the tightened credit market makes it harder for me to get the financing to survive the downturn.

Moreover, I've had to lay off employees, which means they have less money to spend on the other small businesses in the area. They, too, will suffer (and they did nothing wrong).
I'm officially moonlighting (I mean, "freelancing") until the situation (hopefully) gets better.

People think this crisis was caused by careless borrowers, but the lenders are every bit to blame and the real damage is the "trickle down" effect felt by both consumers and small business owners alike.

This greedy country deserves a major collapse and will get it before this summer is over... LOL

The current awesome recession must be viewed in a different perspective from that of 2001. This time, whether one likes it or not, it is going to be remarkably worse.

For starters, the greenback was much stronger then, the oil price was around one-tenth of what it is now, food and commodity prices were almost 50 ??? 80% lower. Moreover, the Afghanistan and Iraq wars did not even come to the picture as yet.

The 2001 recession managed to get recovered in a year; this time, be prepared to face the financial turbulence for a considerably longer period.

Drive and consume less, waste not. Eat simple and little. Perhaps that could be the only way to a healthier and happier life ??? with or without a recession.

Worse than we think? We already know. We live in the trenches on the paying side of every little thing. Why should the FDIC bring people out of retirement? Hire the young people coming out of college who *need* a paying job and are more progressive economists!

The formula use to calculate the CPI has been significantly modified since 1979. If you use the old formula with todays numbers the cpi would be much higher, i believe i read over 9%. Some of the changes include that if the price of beef rises, it assumes people will eat cheaper food. This is true but it doesn't mean that inflation hasn't occured. There is a reason why people feel like everything costs much more eventhough they tell us inflation is at relatively low levels, the new formula gives a nice low number, which keeps the amount the gov't has to spend on social security lower, and potentially sustainable. Bottom line the cpi has lost credibility or at least comparibility. We are actually much closer to 1979 levels of inflation then the todays cpi says.

Wow! Everyone is pessimistic about this situation, but I on the other hand optimistic about our future. We are smart people, lets get together and solve this massive problem. Arguing with each other does not solve anything. Republicans or Democrats or independents? I really don't care who is president, I only care what he/she does for the people, people meaning ALL of people of the United States of America. Cheer up! Better days will come, if only if you want it.

The Formula used to calculate the CPI has went through a series of changes since 1979, therefore comparing the straight numbers isn't accurate, if you put todays numbers into the 1979 formula the cpi is actually much higher, I believe i read it would be over 9%. There is a reason why people feel like there is more inflation then we are told there is, because we have significantly changed how it is calculated.

I think it is helarious to read this blog.Everyone thinks Bush did a really bad job.The truth is all of our politicians are spoiled over paid under worked pukes. This country needs a depression. If our monitary system collapses then all of these monopolized pukes will be on a level playing field.Lets see them all till their own gardens and produce their own food I want to be around to see that one.

    • Posted By: PMcAllister @ 06/09/2008 12:26:14 AM

Although I agree with your sentiment about loving to see the politicians tilling their own gardens in depression conditions, I fear that they control the economy and manipulate the minds of the people enough that a depression would leave you and me tilling THEIR gardens while they "wear themselves out" saving the planet and waging foreign wars.

Candidly, I think we are overdue for a return to a monetary system with intrinsic value. Where no more money can be generated than their is collateral to back it up. Then we don't have to worry about the pernicious tax of inflation that is quietly stealing our wealth and our time. Ever notice that you work harder and more hours every year to stay a step farther behind the standard of living you had last year? Do you really have more of intrinsic value than the generation before you?
