Right now we have a president and Congress that are at such odds with each other nothing is going to get done and we all lose. If the economy gets better McCain will looks better, so the Dem's aren't really in a hurry for the economy to get better. Bush's idea of being a president or working across the isle is to threaten a veto. for anything he doesn't like. Obama things that drilling for oil in protected areas is just delaying the inevitable, so we can't drill where we know there is oil. McCain thinks the economy is suffering but still robust. I can't decide which one is dumber but they are both loosing in the intelligence race. Obama and McCain are in a boat in the middle of the ocean, and the boat is sinking. Who gets saved? America

GW Bush rush to Europe desperately try to cushion the Oil prices by trying to boost US dollar up without the strong backing in federal reserve,as we all know that Oil being as payment in US currency,he thought by doing this can cushion the price of gas to stabilize from further increase at home. Its far too late G.W Bush you prefered americans hurt then to hurt Oil company profits. But he must has forgotten that his action leads more harm, the American goods now will be less competitve to export, thus many more Americans will be out unemployments.

By adopting this approach aslo cause higher deficits in balacing our already mounting growing debt. This exactly what happened if we voted for those idiots for FUN and for sakes of what you likes without proper vetting of candidates qualification, dinity, but only interested Where his Sunday church will be,Who'll be his pastor ?this all little gritty personal issues BUT didn't cares less wheither he knows nothing about economy and just electing him during election day, these idiots just know how letting the lobbyist rides the country future.

He and after Republican rather be successful means in blocking the Democratic bids in Senate on the Tax Cut profits of the Oil company they rather supports the lobbyist interest at expense of national. His group, family members, specially Nafta agreement cost americans lost many millions job that been shifted oversea, his economic fundemental policy didn't stop my head shaking for him from day one when he took office. He has done practically doing nothing for 7 years for US ,now economically we deep ***

The trade tensions with China have led to calls in Congress for adoption of punitive measures that would punish China for what critics see as unfair trade practices which have contributed to the loss of more than 3 million U.S. manufacturing jobs since 2001.

For April, the U.S. trade deficit with Canada, America???s biggest trading partner, jumped by 18.6 percent to $7.6 billion, the highest level since January 2006.

The deficit with Mexico rose by 14.2 percent to $6.8 billion while the imbalance with the European Union increased 14 percent to $8.5 billion. The deficit with the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries rose 10.5 percent to an all-time high of $15.6 billion.

Go Obama the Country Needs You badly!!

Thanks GOP for blocking taxes on Big Oil. Once again, taking care of the corporations and not the average consumer.

May you be voted out in a mere few months so we as a country can move forward and heal.

    • Posted By: grego27 @ 06/10/2008 5:51:26 PM

So how would taxing oil companies help you or make the price of oil go lower? Like another poster explained, its basic economics that taxing oil companies would only make them pass the tax onto consumers which would mean higher oil prices. I know its a complicated subject for hippie liberals to wrap there heads around.

Quick civics lesson, CraigC762. Bush can start a war and drain every dollar we've got.

    • Posted By: CraigC762 @ 06/10/2008 5:18:47 PM

OK, maybeolderdefinitelynotwiser, check the historical record. Every war this country has been in started with an act of Congress. It's written into the Constitution. Sometimes Congress acted on its own, sometimes it acted at the request of the President. Iraq is no different. Even a number of Democrats voted in favor of invading, then backtracked, giving rise to the phrase "I voted for the war before I voted against it."

I know some of you are going to launch into the tired tirade of "Bush Lied, People Died" but the truth of the matter is everyone in Congress got the same unbiased intelligence reports. And many of them, Democrats included, believed that Saddam had WMD and should be removed from power. They voted to send our brave servicemen overseas, then proceeded to stab them in the back.

  • Posted By: CraigC762 @ 06/10/2008 4:17:06 PM

"blah, blah if Bush would blah, blah."

    Quick civics lesson, kids:

The President presides over the government. He can tell Congress what needs to be done until he's blue in the face, but it's up to Congress to make laws. The president only agrees or disagrees; he can't create.

Congress is full of people that are in the pockets of Big Green: rabid environmentalists that have stymied development of this country's energy resources for the last 30 years.

    • Posted By: Saltydog_0 @ 06/10/2008 5:03:00 PM

Oh my! Those poor oil companies! How I wish they could be saved from those Green Meanies! It just breaks my heart how mistreated our energy moguls are by the enormously powerful Green lobby. What's an energy company to do? Sure they have seen record profits during the past few years (and by "record" I don't mean for energy companies; I mean for ANY corporation ANYWHERE at ANY TIME. EVER!), but how can they be expected to compete against the monstrosity of grass-root environmentalist efforts who receive support from voluntary individual contributions?

It's really really sad. Some day my son will grow up and ask me "Daddy? What ever happened to those energy companies I heard about on TV?"

What am I supposed to say when I look into those big brown eyes and have to tell him how our generation ruined his future by failing to protect trillion dollar mega corps from the onslaught of greedy self-serving environmentalists? How do I ever explain such a thing to an innocent child who never knew what it was like to walk along the beach and have his feet delightfully coated in oil? How do I explain to him why the mean green vehicles he sees daily don't gush delightful plumes of carbon in his face? How oh how can I ever make sense of the fact that he'll never get to see black oily clouds rising from coal plants a thousand feet in the sky?

Hey you green nazis!!! How about before you go torturing our country's poor beleaguered energy giants, you tell me how I should answer my poor son's questions! COME ON YOU TYRANTS!!! ANSWER ME!!! WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO SAY TO MY BOY??!!!!!!!

I hope Obama does not make to same mistake than Bush in choosing a V.P.that will run the country as would happen if he choose Hillary.
Obviously Bush did not possess the knowledge needed to lead a country. Cheney has been put there by his father. Since then this country has never been in such a ridiculous position for the world at large and the shitty condition on the home front. What happened? Cheney run out of stupid ideas that serve his self interest and can't wait for as he said one time : when it's over, I'm out of here. Shame on you Bush the elder.

  • Posted By: Sea Admiral @ 06/10/2008 4:57:51 PM

I personally don't think that it's the presidents fault. His hand's are tied, and so will any other future president. I mean, every time he moves on the floor or tries to implement a "good thing" for Americans, it's the "Marxist-demo-gods" who" cry! And, if he had real "Patriot" Security Advisor's, and if our congress were real "Patriot" Americans, both camps would ask President Bush for a "pre-emptive" strike on the Saudi Kingdom! That would fix our problem here in America!

Within the next 5 years 6,500,000 homes will go into foreclosure and many of those homes will be conventional mortgages. The FED should make the banks trickle down lower interest rates to home owners, credit card holders, student loan holders, and others that hold high interest loans. That would stimulate the economy, much more so than a "rebate." The consumer can help by not buying imports, which will help the value of the dollar. Something needs to be done now, not wait until 1-20-2009..

  • Posted By: ghostcommander @ 06/10/2008 4:27:23 PM

Thing bush has never accepted responsibility for anything in his entire life. The next President and Congress will have to go on a "War Mode" just to begin to solve America's economic woes. Have the "Robber Barron" speculators switched their investment strategy from the sub-prime, bait and switch mortgage fraud to "Oil" speculation?. Drive the price of "Oil" up and the value of the "Oil" company stocks go up and then they will sell their holdings and then find another product to speculate upon and drive the price of that product up as well. How about "Blood", the economic blood of the USA?

if bush made the right choices it would pass through congress like $hit through a goose, unfortunately he's not willing to do so.

As pointed out by a previous poster, we need to reduce the demand for gas or increase the supply of gas in order to reduce the price of gas. So, let's reduce the demand. Decrease the speed limit back to 55 mph. This will cause all cars to use less gas per mile and will decrease the national demand for gas. The price of gas will fall, fatal crashes will decrease, and car emissions will decrease. This is a cheap and easy way to start healing our economy.

VOTE THE CROOKS OUT. VOTE OBAMA FOR CHANGE.

  • Posted By: znac @ 06/10/2008 2:21:18 PM

The lack of an understanding of basic economics by the American people never ceases to amaze me. If you want lower prices you have only two choices: reduce demand or increas supply (or both) Taxing the producers will raise prices by reducing supply. Do you home work and stop thinking with your rear end.

  • Posted By: rogerde @ 06/10/2008 12:57:18 PM

I think we should put a 100% tax on any increse in gasoline over $4.00 per gallon that would not come off again until it dropped below say $3.50 per gallon. Use the extra to fund badly need infra-structure instead of giving the extra all to the Arabs and the big oil. This would serve aas a disinsentive to raise prices while allowing the free market to work. The gas price will still receach the same levels, but at lease we would get something out of it.

You stated, "So far, neither of these textbook measures has worked???for reasons that have less to do with flaws in the design, time, and sizing of the policies than with global macroeconomic factors far beyond the control of the Federal Reserve or the White House" which is unfortunately false. Monetary and Fiscal Policy over the last seven years has created the mess we are in today--both messes created by the Federal Reserve and the White House.

When criticized that the Administration was increasing spending (school spending, entitlements, and open-ended global warfare) but not increasing taxation to cover the costs, Cheney responded with, "deficit spending doesn't matter."

With the value of the over-printed dollar rapidly falling due to DEFICIT SPENDING, don't expect the solution to the problem to come from the source of the problem.
