flip flops are very much in fashion in Asian countries. They let your feet breathe fresh air and keep them neat. When you are getting late to rush to school you just have to put your feet in and you are done.Try wearing these and you ll feel the difference.

I agree that flip flops should be banned from office/work space. There is nothing to protect your feet and they are not suitable for professional settings. My company does not allow them, even in office area's. They also are not appropriate for places like church or a nice restaraunt. However I think that people should be able to wear whatever makes them the most comfortable. I disagree with the comments that only lazy people wear flip flops, or that men do not find them attractive on women. I guarantee that if men didn't find them attractive not nearly as many women would wear them, as they do now. But beyond that they are a comfortable alternative to shoes during summer as long as you buy a decent pair that has the proper fit and support. Also keeping your feet clean and your nails trimmed is a must! No one wants to look at broken dirty nails.

As an office Safety coordinator I am fighting an uphill battle to get flip flops banned as a safety risk in our office. The nonprofessional look aside right now the office is going to pay if someone falls wearing them or worse yet if they accidently get stepped on or misstep and kick a desk corner and break a toe. Until it happens thought and someone misses a few days of work and their is an insurance claim I have no hope of getting them banned. This article will go in my file along with the many others as back-up to my position.

Wow! I was surprised to see so many comments on this one. I live in Florida and go barefoot most of the time. If I have to wear shoes, I wear flip flops by Teva, which are great! I think the notion that flip flops are the problem is a bit dubious. More likely, the foot's adaptation to the unnatural state of being in shoes created the problem which was revealed once the foot was alowed to go free for the summer.

I do not like the "so called fashion" of flip-flops. I think flip flops are just a lazy alternative of wearing fashionable shoes like pumps. I love waering pumps, if you wear the mid-heel pumps 1.5 inch heels, they are very comfortable and I love to wear them all day even at home. I know men find women wearing flip flops are unattractive. There is nothing pretty about flip-flops for they are just a flop. I especially dislike seeing other women wearing them at church. Women used to wear pumps often now those ugly cheap flip-flops are a commonplace. I have around 20 different colours of pumps and they are all comfortable and never hurt my feet, toes, legs, kness nor ankles. Most of my pumps are mid heels so they are about the same curve of my arch. I rather wear pumps on my feet in which pumps up my appearance than wear flip flops that would cause my appearance to be a flop.

What about the few people who already have existing foot/ankle problems? I wear flip-flops to take pressure off my feet! I have flat feet and need the flat needs of these sandals or else I get some major foot cramps. Most of the tennis shoes or closed toe shoes have built in arches in them to make it hard on some flat-footed people to wear. The only other types of shoes I can wear comfortable are boy skater shoes that cost an arm and a leg. So yeah, I opt for the cheaper more relaxed choice. LONG LIVE FLIP FLOPS!

I would like to know how many of the group members are overweight. That would certainly indicate more stress for the wearer of flip flops. As in all, a consumer can buy the higher end of flip-flop wear with arch support and even more straps. Notice that the study only focused on the common $8 variety found in a five and dime store, not the more expensive ones that some wear. I live in these for summer, and I haven't noticed any problems.

Uh, what the hell did "droppy drawers" have to do with this conversation? And the goofies that do that aren't always wearing "big sized pants". Sagging originaaly started when poor people who's clothes were too small needed to wear what they had, so they would make the pants appear longer by wearing a long shirt and making the pants reach at least their ankles. Then it became the norm,
What about the silly nerds that wear those nasty looking tight tight pants and droop those below their waist in an attempt to fit in...or whatever. Those are the sillies...which I might add HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS ARTICLE!!!!! -

Ive been wearing flip flops ever since i learned how to walk, from where I come from, like most Asian countries flip flops are the daily footwear. From what ive understood from the article its not really the flip flops fault but the wearers funny way of walking when they wear them.
quoted:
"He found that flip-flop wearers take shorter steps.
"When you wear flip-flops, you kind of scrunch your toes to keep the flip-flop on your foot"
just walk properly and youll be fine. if youre afraid it might fall off maybe youre wearing the wrong size. -

O.......K.... So, how much did this little study cost the taxpayers? Pain in the feet and ankles after summer vacation? You try walking in the sand, drunk, or dancing in those spiked heeled shoes til dawn. It's not a valid study if you don't try to eliminate possible other causes.

I agree with Andrea M. and she is right on target. She knows because she is a woman. Flip-flops are for lazy women. It is also unbelievable that women wear them at work of course, the ones the do wear outfits that say, I am lazy and I do not care about my appearance. Not professional at all.

You get what you pay for, and flip flops are no different. If you buy a cheap $6.99 pair of them of course your feet are going to hurt after awhile-duh! I buy a brand called Rider, they are made in Brazil and can be found in stores like Marshals for about $17.00 or so. They are one piece molded construction with cushioned soles and built in arch support. They come in regular shoe sizes (unlike the cheap ones with the dual sizes), so they fit your feet like a glove and you can walk normally without scrunching your toes to keep them on your feet and they don't make that annoying "flip-flop" sound when you walk. They're just as comfortable as shoes. They are also durable so they last more than just one or two summers. Better than throwing millions of worn out cheap ones into the landfills every year! No Rhinestones or beads, they're unisex, but masculine enough for a guy and sexy enough for a woman. If you pay cheap your going to get cheap, I've seen a lot of girls limping around with sparkly flip-flops, limping takes the sexy out of it.

I totally agree with going barefoot and wearing flipflops; that's all i wear during the summer. However this summer i have incountered many different feet issues. My heals and toes have both experinced pains and cramping; the more i complain about it the longer i am grounded from my beloved flipflops. Along with the pain i have also noticed blistering on the top of my foot . The odd blistering is rash like and is spreading along where the straps run. On top of all the discomfort from flipflops, my feet look terrible!!!!! So I agreed these lovely shoes that i can't seem to stop wearing are a problem i seriously need to deal with!

It's funny because I actually have fared better with going barefooted/wearing flip flops than wearing regular shoes or even running shoes. I used to have constant foot pain and was desperate for relief when I read an article that suggested my foot pain may have been associated with the fact that because I wore shoes all the time, my feet had never been allowed to develop their natural strength. Now that I go barefooted a lot, wear flip flops, and go running in my Five Fingers by Vibram, my foot pain is pretty much gone. We weren't born with shoes on our feet, you know.

Wow pretty harsh and all about flip flops. I do agree they can cause problems I too wear them and have suffer feet and also knee problems and I am not overweight I am athletic and all ways. Wearing flip flops are easier than lacing up a shoe when running around doing things, and yes I think if I were meeting the president of the USA and having that opportunity I would not be wearing flip flops (FYI). I think people have the right to wear what they please wether its flip flops or heels but its there bodies that will be paying the consequences. What ever the choice should be take care of yourself and your body.

I really cannot understand the popularity of flip-flops among women. They are unattractive and make the following statement: "I do not care about my appearance and will make minimal effort to look presentable." They are not cute, and generally inappropriate to wear at any place but the beach. Attention to detail is important, and when you wear a cute outfit, you should top it off with a nice pair of shoes. I generally wear heels, both during the winter and summer, and would feel like a complete slop wearing a pair of flip flops.

What a phuquing bioatch. Do you really think that these girls wearing their flip flops care what you think about them. What do you care what someone else is wearing. Perhaps they think the fact that you wear heals everyday makes the statement, 'im an uptight b* i* t* c* h". Did you ever stop to think what makes heels dressier. What they look like to you? So if a pair of flip flops looks good to a person they would be just as dressy to them as a pair of heals. Or is it only your taste that can define what is dressy and not sloppy. If i only new what was empirically good looking and what wasnt, like the gift you have i guess. Or do you prefer heels because thats what society has told u is better. Open your eyes and make a personal desicion, and if it is still heels thats cool, but cant you respect anothers equal right to decide what they feel is cute or dressy or comfortable and what makes them feel like a slob.

socceronthebrain- The way God intended your foot to be, is for the spread toes to be spread out, with some space between the individual toes. So, unless you're wearing Earth Shoes or Birkenstock, your toes are cramped together and over time, the bones in your foot start staying that way. Yes, the problem is worse with wearing stilleo heels, And an extreme example is shown by the ancient Chinese custom of binding the feet of girls so that the foot boones are all jammed together and the feet are tiny. But Western idea of beauty is almost as bad. Look at Mickey Marsh's comment that 'ladies' who wear flip-flop have 'ugly feet'. That because we're not used to looking at feet that are naturally spread out. Look at any picture of the human foot in a medical book, and compare it to your own foot or anyone elses who wears shoes on a regular basis. You'll notice that the foot in the book is more spread out. That's why in Hawaii, we buy wider width shoes, if we have to buy shoes.
And while you may not have problems with smelly feet ot foot fungi, you've probably have had corns on your toes or blisters on your heels. This is caused by wearing shoes and is something 'flip-flop' wearers don't have.. -

I'm confused as to why people are saying that shoes cram the toes together and wearing shoes causes foot fungus and odor. I wear shoes all the time, I'm not a fan of sandals and flipflops and I've never had a problem with this supposed foot fungus and odor. I have dealt with toes crammed but thats only happened in stilleto heels. In sneakers, there isn't cramming. If there is, that's a sign of a too small shoe. People may get foot fungus from shoes but that means that they don't wash their feet or wear socks or change their socks. I have no problems with people wearing flip flops, I just don't like seeing people bashing regular shoes.

The name 'flip-flops' comes from the noise that they make as your walk. However, this is also an indication that the person wearing them doesn't know how to wear them and is scrunching their toes to wear them. When I walk with my 'slippahs' I make no sound as I let the back side of the footward to naturally drop down, knowing that they aren't going to fall off of my foot. The thong and my forward motion keeps them on my foot. If i scrunch my toes, like those who don't know how to wear them. I get that 'flip-flop' noise, and my toes start to hurt. Also, I do take shorter steps. Perhaps people should take classes in the proper way to wear their 'flip-flops', or leave the wearing of them to the professionals like me.
And FATJOEY, you can keep wearing your shoes and keep getting your stinky feet and foot fungus. And I dare you to come to Hawaii and tell a 6'2", 320 lb.Hawaiian wearing flip-flops, that he's a 'F@G', because he is going to pound your fat lazy Docker wearing a$$, like he's pounding taro to make poi. -

In fact, almost immediately after I work out or a football game, I take my running shoes off and slip right back into them and let my feet breathe! I wonder if the pain they are referring to in the article has to do more so with people not used to wearing flip flops year round. I'm sticking with my Reefs that fit like a glove!

well I live in Florida and all they wear is flip flops...everywear....even in fancy restuarants. There is no line between when to where them and not but one that I have noticed about these Floridians is that they like to buy the Old Navy flip flops that are 5 for $5 and they don not support your feet at all. I don not like to wear flip flops because for one they hurt my feat and everyone wears them everywhere, there are lots of nice sandals that you could be wearing instead of ill supporting flip flops

As a former elementary school nurse, I would like to add a note about safety and flip-flops. Although my school system discouraged wearing of these shoes, and prohibited it during gym, many children, especially girls, wore them anyway. They experienced many injuries, minor to major, from the instability and lack of protection for the foot.

A) Spend more that $4.99 and you will find that the flops you get are contoured and conmfortable to wear, stop being so cheap! B) If you would buy the right size flops you don't have to scrunch your toes to keep them on. C) Scientists are getting paid to study flip flops?! WTF!

LOL... I think it's all a conspiracy by the shoe industry to get us to buy shoes only....hahaha... seriously I wear flip flops often and i don't credit any of this... typical wear and tear on the body is what I say...what about the croc flip flops are those more therapeutic....

A) Spend a little extra money and buy a nice flip flop, like reef or cobian, the soles are contoured and comfortable to walk on. B) If you buy flip flops that actually fit correctly you dont have to scrunch your toes to keep them on. C) Scientists are wasting their time on flip flop studies? WTF?

Flip-flops also make for unsafe driving -- I'm always amazed at how many individuals drive while wearing them. You've got this thing flopping around between your foot and the gas, brake and clutch pedals and lose the control that even a pair of light-weight sneakers or more conventional sandals offer.

Do we really need a study to tell us flip flops are bad for the wearers? Just watching flip flop wearers makes my knees and ankles hurt. I've never seen the appeal of flip flops. I think they're kind of nasty, definitely uncomfortable, and unbelievably ugly.

Chaco river sandals are the only sandal footbed approved by the American Academy of Podiatrists. I'm a guide in Utah and wear mine almost all year with no issues.

Fatjoey, you're in imbescile. Flip flops are the footwear of choice for soldiers during R&R. My husband being one of them. That makes them homosexuals, right? And by the way, wearing certain clothing doesn't change your sexual orientation. You like boys or you like girls. Pink and blue have nothing to do with it.

I think that there is a difference between the flat cheap flip flops with the rubber sole of less than an inch and other sandals in the style of the flip flops. Flip flops have evolved since the so-called beach/locker room days and now most pairs over $10 do provide arch support.

As an american who lives abroad, I need to provide some perspective. Do you know how many billions of people only wear sandals/flip-flops? South Asia, Southeast Asia, Africa,..etc. This article is much about nothing. I know its easy to forget that there is a whole world of people living thier lives outside of america and here we are discussing a possible "throbbing tenderness in your toes". Oh its good to be fat and out of touch. ;-P

Indexcard- And shoes are bad for your feet too. They jam your toes together. They cause your feet to sweat, which promotes fungus growth, and foot odors. And there are millions of people in other parts of the world who wear flip-flops without having problems. The reason people like swienke, can't keep the flip-flops on their feet, is because they're too dumb to adjust,to wearing them, having grown-up wearing shoes all their lives.

Oh gee, because ONE person on a message board has conflicting evidence, IT'S ALL FALSE!
Anecdotal evidence means diddly squad, so shut up. The majority of people haven't lived their entire lives with flip flops anyway, so for the majority of people, this study does apply. Just because it doesn't apply to a single case doesn't mean it's some evil lie or a grand conspiracy, mmkay? -

Well, dawebnerd, you're one lucky person. Although flip-flops may not affect your feet much, trust me when I say that most people eventually do suffer because of them. As for the flip-flops rarely falling off, I've found that to be completely untrue. I never wear them because they generally fall off within 20 to 30 strides, but that may just be because I'm flat-footed and I walk a little bit differently from most people. But hey, if they work for you then all the power to you!

What a bunch of bull. Having lived in Hawaii all my life (50+ years), I have always worn flip-flops, or as we call them here, slippers or slippahs. Even when I was going to college on the mainland, I'd wear slippers in the snow. I have never suffered the problems you've mentioned. If you look at my feet, you'll see nice wide toes, that aren't impacted, like you would get from jamming your toes into a shoe.. The reason that people try to grip the thong with their toes, is due to the fact that they have not use to properly wear their flip-flops. They have a fear that the flip-flops will fly off their feet, but that rarely happens. People here play pick-up games of basketball or flag football. However, wearing slippahs, have given me very good strength to grip things with my big and second toes. I can pick dropped items like rubber bands using my toes, or in the morning when I go outside to get my morning paper, which is inside a plastic bag, I can grasp the paper with toes and flip it in the air to catch it. Why don't you look at people who have grown up wearing slippers, instead of people who are more use to wearing shoes.

Well Duh! Of course flip flops every freakin day are bad for your feet. Any podiatrist worth their salt will tell you it's also not really the best idea to wear the exact same shoe day in & day out either, for exactly the same reasons listed above - the muscles in your feet/legs that help coordinate your gait need a different "challenge" at least every 2 days. Different muscles are engaged & others get to relax when you mix it up a bit. You don't use your body in the exact same movements day in & day out, so why would you think your feet should be any different? There's no sole support. What amazes me is why so many people would want to wear shoes that your feet have to try7 hold on to with every step. 5 min in a pair of too "flappy" shoes & my feet are killing me. Too much work...I just wanna walk, not worry about if my shoe is gonna fall off or worse, fall apart if someone accidentally steps on the back, with every step. LOL...imagine what would happenin an emergency situation if you needed to climb up on or over something - you'd be *** outta luck cause you aren't wearing real shoes!

I'm with you...why would I want to have to hold onto my shoes with my toes like a retarded primate ;-D
And let's not forget the ugly stepsister to flip-flops...those freaking backless shoes just make me want to scream!! No wonder people are so mean to each other all the time, they keep getting the soles of their feet beaten all day a la 'Midnight ...? (can't think of the name of the movie; the one where the kid named Billy tried to smuggle dope out of Turkey and spent time in a Turkish prison. One of the punishments was to beak the soles of your feet for a while. Didn't hurt a lot at the time but the next day ... whoo-boy!!!)-
Posted By: rubysmama35 @ 06/11/2008 12:14:33 PM
Sorry, fat finger typo! The punishment was to BEAT the soles of your feet with a bamboo rod for about an hour.

Its the same concept behind (no pun intended) as to why those who wear "Droppy Drawers" are constanly haveing to pull up there pants because they are 6 sizes too big for them. Wear things that fit properly and many joint and muscle problems will go away.
