Having heard Jerry Falwell preach several times on TV, I was impressed that he was not afraid to proclaim the gospel of Christ, and to preach the Bible as it is written, not as people want it to say. Homosexuality is a sin according to the Bible, and a true man of God should not sugar coat what the Bible says. I am a born again Christian, and maybe I am not as abrasive as Jerry Falwell, but I have nothing but admiration that he was not ashamed to proclaim Christ. Many lost people were saved as a result of his preaching.

pfisher, I agree...People are commenting with a lot of hate! Pointing fingers at Jerry and being ruthless shows the mentality of people in society today. They have no purpose or meaning. Very unhappy with themselves. Again, you can feel the hate. Jerry Falwell was not full of hate but a message of hope and goodness.

Why do trained theologians differ? Why do educated translators disagree over Greek and Hebrew meanings? Why all the confusion? Shouldn't a "divinely inspired" document be as clear as possible?

The problem is not with human limitations, as some claim. the problem is the bible itself. People who are free of theological bias and whose minds have not turned cultish in their blind belief notice that the Bible contains hundreds of discrepancies. Should it surprise us that such a literary and moral mishmash taken seriously causes so much discord?

One verse out of hundreds that do not make sense:
Jesus: But those who are my enemies, which would not have me rule over them, bring them here and slay them before me. Luke 19: Verse 27
Does this sound like the "Prince of Peace" and loving Jesus we were taught from childhood?

Are we really supposed to believe that Jesus was born of a virgin impregnated by a ghost? I find it incredible that we are asked to believe that the earth was created in 6 literal days, that women came form a man's rib, and that same man was created from mud, that a snake, a donkey and a burning bush spoke human language, that the entire world was flooded with 40 days of rain (do you know how many times the number 40 is used in the bible? The answer is at least 4. How about the numbers 3, 6, and 7?) The writers used numerology.) Are we supposed to believe that language variations stem from the tower of Babel, that the sun stood still to help Joshua win a battle and it went backward for King Hezekiah? Would any self respecting physician believe that mental illness and epilepsy are caused by demons (there was no word for these things thousands of years ago, that those born with a homosexual orientation are possessed by the same demons, (again, no DNA studies or Biology 5,000 years ago). Finally do we believe that that there is life after death in a city which is 1,500 miles cubed, with mansions and food for Christians only. Has anyone noticed the similarity in the names Christ and Krishna? How many know that there were other pagan gods and a=saviors that have the same hallmarks that "jesus" had? Does anyone care to research evolution as much as they do the Bible? If they did they would find there are skeletons which are half human and yes, half ape. They are called Hominids. Dozens and dozens have been found, and yes, so has the infamous "missing link".

I believe people like "FARTWELL" actually like to control how people live in their personal lives. He is no better than Hitler that cose a certain group of people to live, and for others to die.

    • Posted By: Roory @ 06/10/2008 11:11:09 PM

I agree with you and I love "Fartwell"

Peanut: He only tried to preach the truth... You must be Baptist. Shame on you. Don't you know that Jesus and St. Peter taught the only TRUE religion.

Ah yes, let's see, I think, that make 1962 people, I hve heard, say that..
Amazingly, enough, all of you, used the same bible.
      Doesn't that bother you?

  • Posted By: singularization @ 06/10/2008 11:10:20 PM

Well, like Christopher Hitchens says, the world is a better place ( and roomier) without him. And I'm glad also to see that he 'skipped' the Rapture .. Instead, having his dead swollen carcas discovered in the obscurity of his back office .. He and his ilk have done Enormous amounts of damage to the psyche of this country and have NOT helped Israeli and palstinian relations AT ALL .. He even blamed 9-11 on our own fellow citizens .. nope, can't hide it and I won't .. I'm glad he's dead ..

The world is better off with her husband dead! In his head, love your fellow American IF there like us. But its ok to hateful towards them if there not! What I just said sounds cold, but no colder than him.

    • Posted By: Roory @ 06/10/2008 11:10:11 PM

      I completely agree. Thank you.

, , , , , "and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices." - Mark 12:33

, , , , , maybe the Falwells forgot to read this chapter on their "Christian" Bible,

    • Posted By: investinlife @ 06/10/2008 10:50:04 PM

If you really love your neighbor you should tell him the truth. Jerry did!

      • Posted By: elithian @ 06/10/2008 11:09:55 PM

Whose truth, his or God's; no answer requredt

  • Posted By: MauiKimo @ 06/10/2008 10:36:35 PM

to sprues1, the constitiution does not contain anything about the separation of church and state. That came from a letter by Jefferson about the constitution and what he was saying was while the church should be protected from the corupting influences of the government, the government needed to be influenced by the preserving effects of religion. The Bill of Rights talks about freedom of religion, not it's surpression.

    • Posted By: sprues1 @ 06/10/2008 10:51:03 PM

Yes, you're correct, it doesn't say anything about the suppresion of religion..
The facts are, that, probably, the first reason for the article, that says the state and the church, will be separate , was the King of England, establishing a state religion.
The second, was the actions, of christiqans, when they had authority.
We live in a country, that allows you to worship, in the manner of your choosing.
The problem, that many people have with the religious right, is that that's not enough.
The religious right, wants religion, in schools.
Personally, I don't have a problem, with that, as long as it is the religion, chose by the children, attending.
I had an interesting conversation, with a baptist minister, on a flight, from San Francisco, to New York City.
Finally, he admitted, that he would not be satisfied, till alll teachers, politicians, governent officials of all kind were christians.
Nothing wrong with that, the Christian faith requires a christian to spread the word of God and promote the faith, your history, does not allow us to trust you.

      • Posted By: MauiKimo @ 06/10/2008 11:08:50 PM

True about the church of England, that was the main reason for the amendment. But at the founding of America, several states had state religions, while not surpressing the freedom of worship.

As forthe Baptist preacher, I too would hope that all teachers, etc were Christians, but i would also fight for the right of those who did not agree to have the freedom to have their views heard and respected. Sadly, we Christians have not always presented that point of view. But being backed into a corner puts one on the defensive.

ecmcomichael, I agree with you wholeheartedly. The comments of hate by so many people really have been an eye opener for me. I have not read one harsh comment by a Christian in this blog.

    • Posted By: elithian @ 06/10/2008 11:07:09 PM

Obviously you have not paid attention to the comments. Time and again there are those judging remarks that are forbidden yet here they are. Falwwll was just a man and like all men he died. Like you and I will. I suggest you worry more about your relationship with God while you are alive and forget about the Dead. The dead are now the province of God; not men. And I bet you, like all men, have plenty of sin. Worry about that. People don't like Falwell because he was too judgental and narrow minded; too political and not God Fearing enough. The love f God is always attractive and beautiul. Those who emminate that love are like honey to bees. I really don't think Falwel did that well for most of us and that is why you see these comments. When the Crocadile Hunter died there was only kindness expressed in the blogs. He made a difference by example and I never heard that he spoke an unkind word about anyone or any living creature.

      • Posted By: Roory @ 06/10/2008 11:07:00 PM

Most religious freeks are. Look at the Catholic Church!

  • Posted By: vjensen @ 06/10/2008 11:06:58 PM

How can you say there is no compatibility between religion and politics when that is exactly what this country was founded on? I understand that it may not be for everyone and it is a delicate subject not to be pushed however it IS a part of this country's history and why any of us have this country to begin with so to write it off all together is plain ignorant. I'm tired of walking on eggshells while my beliefs are continously sidelined so that some libral's can dominate. We all need to speak up to be heard before we're drowned out.

  • Posted By: BannanaUSA @ 06/10/2008 11:04:32 PM

I think you called it right Texas2...Im not sure Jerry is going to heaven or hell as he provided nothing of subtance on this earth that I could see but hate and intolerance. He was filled with the same hate that Usama is filled with just executed his hate in a different way.

  • Posted By: Roory @ 06/10/2008 10:19:29 PM

    Osama Bin Falwell!

    • Posted By: alabama.chaplain @ 06/10/2008 10:23:56 PM

You did not know him, why comment as you did when you did not know him?

      • Posted By: Roory @ 06/10/2008 10:28:37 PM

I knew him through his stinking hating message. he was full of hate. He is no better than Osama!

        • Posted By: MauiKimo @ 06/10/2008 10:54:20 PM

I challenge you to listen to some of Jerry's messages for yourself, they are available online. Unitl you have heard the man speak in entirety you cannot really know what he is saying.

          • Posted By: Roory @ 06/10/2008 11:04:10 PM

He was full of hate to all who were not Jewish-christians. He hated gays, Chinese, Arabs, liberals, Muslims, Iranians, Iraqi, Koreans......etc.
What a horrible horrible man he was!

        • Posted By: elithian @ 06/10/2008 10:52:36 PM

          To Alabama Chaplain
Perhaps it would be good if we all refrained from commenting on others we don't know. I have read the Bilbl and I got that God s our judge; not Falwell, you or the pope, Freewill is given by God but so many so called preachers want to take it away. I am not fooled, Falwell was just a man and nothing more. He hd a the flaws he saw in others. Only by grace of God and that alone are we blessed. No work or act suffices for God's love and no human knows the will of God except that God reveals it. Seek to know yourself and stop worrying bout the dead; your opportunity will soon be gone.

    • Posted By: alabama.chaplain @ 06/10/2008 10:27:20 PM

See, you did not know Rev. Falwell, how can you make such an uneducated remark like that if you did not know the man?

  • Posted By: mnmanariesram @ 06/10/2008 11:02:34 PM

Jerry Falwell was the best advertisement for ATHEISM there ever was! :)

  • Posted By: signsbymike @ 06/10/2008 10:59:56 PM

The moral majority was neither the majority nor moral. Read Mel White's {the ghostwriter} of Falwell's (Strength for the Journey and If I Should Die Before I Wake) book Stranger at the Gate: To Be Gay And Christian In America. Falwell was an embarrasment to any thinking person.

  • Posted By: Br. Michael @ 06/10/2008 10:57:13 PM

No disrespect to Macel of goodness. However, "GOD MAKES THINGS DIFFERENT." Not Jerry, George, or any other bible breeder that forgets that GOD is before, during, and after thr Bible. As you seen, The Bible did not save Jerry, GOD did! With all my humankind respect to imperfect children of GOD as we ALL happen to be born that way, I pray Jerry rests in peace.

  • Posted By: goingine @ 06/10/2008 10:57:12 PM

Just a an observation..according to the rhetoric I'm reading, the Religious Right (i.e., Evangelicals) apparently is the only religion in this country that is the Land of the Free! (?) HELLO!! There are the Jewish, the Catholic, the Buddhist, and many more religions that make this country Great...Gee, I sure hope I won't be witnessing a religious war in our country in my lifetime; some of this stuff I'm reading is pretty scarry!
