Why are these fundies still posting? They could sell their computers to feed the poor. Then they could sell their homes. And their cars. But no, they covet their precious things. And they ignore all the warnings about wealth. All they have to do is vote Republican and be pro-torture, pro-war, and pro-death penalty. And hate gay folks. Then they get to hoard and let the poor starve.

The world is better off without this guy. Celebrate his departure from this earth, and the Religious Right needs to go down!

I agree that Jerry Farewell made some mistakes, but havent we all. I believe his intentions were good. It seems like very few speakers want to stand up for the right thing. If you say you are a true Christian and have made a choice to accept him as your savior, you do your best to live right as Jesus would do. Sometimes that is not always the popular thing to do and you are not always loved by people. Actually God does say that the world will not always love you for what you stand for.

Falwell couldn't even follow his own "buy-bull'... what a fat gluttonous PIG! LOL
no wonder he died at 73...he probably had a whole chicken stuck in his throat!
Talk about a hypocrite..he was just like fellow and still alive fattie John Haggee...
Wow, religion should come with a heart disease warning label! LOL!

I am curious having read your post. Just what is attractive about the way you view the world. I mean you really sound like a dark, pessimistic kind of person that lives in a hopeless, meaningless world. Even if it is delusion believing in God looks much bettter that what you are presenting. I prefer a different perspective. I also wonder if you really sought a true answer, not from the bible or anything like that; from a direct connection. You know, dial direct and see if the # works. But maybe that would be scary if there was an answer. Why, then there might even be rules, etc. Very inconvienent, There is an old saying in India: "Jai sat chit anand" When you have understood this then we could really talk.

Kudos to Mrs. Falwel for standing behind her husband! You know "husband" don't you? One male, married to one female, for life? The "right" will be in a steady decline until the wrath of God let;s us all know how He feels about our "tolerance". LOOK at what we tolerate!! I wonder what the "tolerant left" in Sodom, Canaan, & Babylon had to say when God let them know His thoughts on the matter. The "right" will soon, if not already, be no more than a "remnant". And even Jerry Falwel would not have been able to change this fact. Praise God & Glory be to His Name. Even us sinful humans are sick of what this world has come to.
    Your "tolerance" is intolerable!
(I do find the "typo" most interesting. A freudian slip perhaps?)

Comment: To all you commenters here: I am from Lynchburg Va, still live here, and met Jerry when I was 10 years old. At the time, I was being raised by my mother and a VERY abusive stepfather. One Wednesday night, we attended church at Thomas Road where Jerry was preaching. I stood up and accepted Jesus Christ as my Savior, and it changed my life. I walked the isle and Jerry took my under his arm, and for the first time in my life I knew nobody could ever hurt me again. Jerry bent over backwards to help our family through out the years, and this is a very common story about Jerry. Many experienced the same thing. You dont know the man like we do. He was A FINE MAN, and so are his fine sons. He was against what he believed God was against, and for what he believed God was for. The man had courage, and the strength to stand up for what he believed in, and he made a difference. Easy for you commenting clowns to badmouth the man. What did you stand up for in front of the world? What did YOU do to do anything at all for this country? Let me tell you the kind of man Jerry was. Jerry wasnt allowed to have a checking account. Why you may ask? Because he kept giving all his money away to people. He would leave home with several thouand dollars in his pocket in the morning, and come home broke that night. Thats the kind of man he was. His home was not given to him, he bought it from the church. The church tried to give it to him, but he refused. He drove an SUV, a chevy to be exact. Not a Lexus, Not a Caddilac, not living the rich lifestyle. He was a GIVER. And he loved everyone he met, and everyone who met him loved him as well, including LARRY FLINT. So, your comments mean nothing to us who knew the man..

Glenwood. Being from Lynchburg myself,it is very refreshing to read a comment from someone that has the same remembrance of the late Dr. Falwell as I do. Glancing over the majority of these comments intended to be about the interview with Mrs. Falwell, it is very eye opening as to the amount of ignorance and hate being intended for Dr. Falwell. The late Dr. Falwell and his ministry has touched the lives of countless young people over the years. And Praise the Lord for the impact those lives are having in this world today. Thank you Dr. Falwell, thank you Thomas Road baptist Church, and thank you to the Youth Aflame Ministry from back in the day and to all that ever worked with its sporting events, softball, football, basketball and those that worked in the clubs. The dedication and devotion of the leaders to all participants, were just a reflection of the type of person the late Dr. Falwell truley was on the inside.

It has been the stated goal of the religious right to appoint conservative judges to overturn Roe vs. Wade for years. Bush is on board with this plan. Every single judge that Bush appointed to every single Federal bench that came open during his tenure was a right wing Christian conservative. The Democrats were stymied when the GOP controlled congress, and Bush got to appoint two right wing Supreme Court Justices.

First Bush appointed John Roberts to replace Sandra Day O'Connor when she stepped down. When Chief Justice Wm. Rehnquist died in 2005, Bush appointed Roberts as Chief Justice, and then filled O'Connor's empty chair with Samuel Alito. Both Roberts and Alito are Catholic, and both are outspoken against abortion.

Bush has appointed two of the nine Justices, including the Chief Justice. The current Supreme Court has been sharply divided on a number of high profile issues, including abortion rights, affirmative action, eminent domain, gay rights, the separation of church and state, sovereign immunity, and states' rights. The number of close votes in cases involving these areas suggests that a change of one or two key justices could completely shift the thinking of the Court on such issues.

Right now there are four Justices who are elderly and will soon either retire or die. The next President will get to appoint at least two new Justices. If the next President is McCain, those two will both be conservative right wing Christians. McCain has publicly PROMISED to do this, and explicitly said that his goal is to overturn Roe vs. Wade.

Most Americans, even most Republicans, value the separation of church and state. That clause is in our Constitution to protect us from exactly what is going on in America today! Allowing any religious group (especially a radical one) to control the interpretation and application of our laws in the highest court in the land is NOT democratic. Nor is it wise.

I don't care if you are a disappointed Hillary supporter or an undecided Independent or a life-long Republican or are pro-Obama. ANYONE, regardless of stripe, needs to vote against a candidate who had declared his intention of appointing partisan judges. Judges are supposed to be impartial. That is the basis of our legal system. Without that, you might as well live in a dictatorship, without recourse to law.

Of course every stupid comment Jerry F. ever made is documented and shoved in our faces as if he's the only one to make them. I have no doubt that Jerry's in heaven not because of anything he did (which dispite the bad things he said he did do a lot of good which of course isn't mentioned) but because just like every human being on earth whether white, black, muslim, catholic, gay or straight, our sins have been paid for by the CROSS OF CHRIST. ???God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.??? (John 3:17)

In case anyone has ever bothered to read the Bible you will find that Jesus spent a lot of time hanging out with prostitutes, and scandelous tax collectors getting to know them and helping with their problems, healing the sick and showing love the poorest people. He had no home and no fancy gas gussling chariots to make himself look important. He only had crowds of people following him everywhere he went. He pissed off the religious leaders of that time and made them want to kill him. 'Then he ALLOWED men to torture and murder him as payment so that ALL can go to heaven. Self righteous Christians need to be following his example and we're not.....that's the problem with the "religous right" in this country. We can't condone the sins but we must love the sinners because we are no better then they are. Our only job is to show love and proclaim the truth. Not to condemn.

NO other god in any religion has given his life to save our souls.
Every knee shall bow and tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. (Isaiah 45:23)
Whether in this life (hopefully) or after we die we will ALL realize who, and how REAL GOD (our intelleigent designer, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit together as One God) is and I know that I won't be able to get on my knees fast enough!
John 3:16....have you heard of it? Our souls depend on it.

Well said, agnstheflow! I never cared how Falwell divided the church and caused Carter to not be re-elected but he will be judged by God and not by me or anyone on this blog.

    • Posted By: washchadblip @ 06/10/2008 11:59:34 PM

So, an all-loving God couldnt' forgive our sins (and just never you mind that God, as our creator, configured us to sin, and knew so in His all-knowingness) until he sent his son down to be tortured? It's a kooky story and you still believe it, probably because you can't bear the thought that you'll die and be dead.

It amazes me how satan uses the accusatory skills he has in many forms. Many times its as suttle as a non reply, other times its telling bits of truth while witholding key information. The fact is this great nation : The United States is quickly becoming a country which despises God, his love, his laws, even his grace which we all benefit from. Yes, athiest claim no there is no God and laugh and despise those who believe in and confess as Lord. The religous conservatives , I being one of them, are here. Were not going away and are now, and will continue to be an influence on our society until the day comes when the argument of creation and evolution is settled once and for all,. That day there will no longe be athiest. May god continue to have mercy on all of us,
    Ray

Good enough, I rest my case, you(the religious right) will not be satisfied, till every man, woman and child in this country are members of the christian church, your denomination. And as soon as you gain power, you will do away, with all of the other denominations, of the christian religion.
It's time to do something about you folks, let's start with a change, that says you pay taxes on the valuble building and land, that your denomination, rests on.

      • Posted By: Nins @ 06/11/2008 12:03:58 AM

Yes, let's start making religious groups, all of them, pay taxes!

We could pay down the national debt in no time.

        GREAT IDEA, Sprue.

    • Posted By: washchadblip @ 06/10/2008 11:53:55 PM

Ray, if you really believe in God, give all your money to the poor and trust that God will provide.

      Did you?

      Are you poor now?

      Did you now?

      Now?

      Hey, I thought you believed!

Wow. How can Jerry Falwell's wife be so stupid? I mean, knowing what this guy was know for wouldn't she at the very least try to educate herself ont he issues? Guess not. Like most Christians, she is ignorantly blissed.

  • Posted By: washchadblip @ 06/10/2008 11:24:36 PM

He was a monster. And his lack of faith was monstrous. The Bible warns and warns and warns about wealth and he lived like a king, where Jesus lived a pauper's life. Satan tempted Jesus with things and Jesus refused those things. Falwell embraced those things. And his wife embraces McCain, who embraces torture. She forgets that Jesus was tortured. She???s a monster too.

    • Posted By: joeybarney @ 06/10/2008 11:59:22 PM

Just to correct your inaccuracy.: McCain has the same stance on torture as Obama. Let us not forget however, only one of them volunteered to endure it so others could be free.

      • Posted By: washchadblip @ 06/11/2008 12:02:25 AM

NO other god in any religion has given his life to save our souls.

ummmm sorry, agnstheflow..you are sooooo wrong about that... read my posts...

Mithra, Dionysus, Horus, and many other pagan savior gods who were also myths just like "jesus" were worshipped as "dying god-men who were crucified and rose from the dead after 3 days.

I suggest you research the real history of christianity...it's a monstrous lie.

I can tell your heart is in the right place, but if you really want to search for "truth". research ATHEISM.

  • Posted By: mooska @ 06/10/2008 11:58:44 PM

I have been a Christian since I was 12. I have back slided. I have been counted among the "faithful". Now, I am sure I am counted by the faithful as one of the fallen. I have shared wine with atheists and I have broken bread with the "abomination of the Lord." My only comment is, " Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's and unto God what is His." "But now abidith faith, hope, and charity (love), these three; but the greatest of these is charity (love)." Quit worrying about politics and worry about God's children. Worry about the poor and the homeless and those who promise to help them!. Be salt to the world . John 1:4

  • Posted By: Peanut59 @ 06/10/2008 10:55:00 PM

Jerry Falwell was definitely misunderstood. He only tried to preach the truth and morals of God's word. We as a nation have lost the morals and absolutes. God has given us a guide with laws and teachings that will help us not hurt us. People want to live how they want without regarding others and the consequences. Look at the chaos in the world and our nation. It is because God has been eliminated from our lives. What we sow, we shall also reap. Look at the state of our nation and the ugliness and sin. Jerry was a great man, I was priviledged to know him and his wife from attending Thomas Road Baptist Church and Liberty University. Again, I respected him and Macel and what they tried to do. He never mentioned hate, or violence in his sermons. Love the sinner, hate the sin is what he constantly preached. I remember his words like it was yesterday. His sons, wife, and daughter are continuing his work. God Bless them. Jerry Falwell is getting his rewards in Heaven.

As a Christian, my problem with evangelicals like you is that you have become the very thing that Jesus railed against; church hierarchies, priesthoods, intolerance especially toward the poor, sick, disabled and those that are different. Corporate christianity and its republican right wing leaders are owned by the corporations. All the major Christian bible publishing and record labels are owned by secular comgommerantes. Mike Curb brought into Word records because he felt that at least one label needed to have a Christian presence. Love the sinner, Hate the sin. What does that mean??? Jesus hung around people no body else, especially the church people of his time wanted. You guys are so worried about what other people are doing, that you're not looking at your own side of the street. The side with spiritual pride, egotism, self-will run riot, none of which Jesus would condone. Jesus accepted all inclusively. Evangelicals keep people from being part of them through exclusivity, bigotry, white pride, racism, and a point of view taken more from southern polical and cultural values than the values that Christ taught us to have. In my heart, I believe that Falwell was a phasicee if there ever was one and I never have seen much Christian love or humility in his comments. Frankly, I think the church needs a new reformation, one that will cast out the BS the church has become, and which goes back to the simplcity of Christ. God loves you no matter what. There is a God, Your not it. And I think he is grieved by all the BS that his church has become in his name.

      • Posted By: Peanut59 @ 06/10/2008 11:58:25 PM

Doctort: I hate to dissapoint you, but I am not an "Evangelical" proclaiming to be God. No, I'm just a sinner saved by grace. I am not a racist, considering the fact that my daughter is part African-American, I am caucasian. Are you disapointed yet? I also have friends that don't share my beliefs or life style. I mingle and converse with everyone. I work with a mixture of people of all religions, lifestyles, beliefs, etc.. I also am friends with them while in their presence. I don't preach or judge. Just don't agree with some things but still able to love them. I am just a "vessel" trying to get through the storm and be of help and love others. These things I learned from my parents and great leaders like Jerry Falwell. Sorry to let you down...........

  • Posted By: jpraisept @ 06/10/2008 11:57:58 PM

Its one thing to leave some comments, but truly pathetic to use these forums, blogs or the likes to just throw out a bunch of crap that has no meaning. You think somebody is really going to take your simple minded words and find any value to it? Do you really know what he did in his life, do you really know enough to sit around and pass your judgment on this man? Come on, you can find a better hobbie than what you are doing.

  • Posted By: Red Devil @ 06/10/2008 11:54:21 PM

How typical of Falwell's wife to dismiss his hatespeach as a "mistake," or a "missinterpretation." The religious right make me sick. They are nothing more than intolerant, hate-mongering fascists; using their religion as a shield to cover up how truely disgusting and backwards thinking they are. Good riddance to Jerry Falwell, and everyone like him!

  • Posted By: joeybarney @ 06/10/2008 11:52:50 PM

If anyone knows a man, for better or for worse, it is his wife. If mine wrote a book about me, I'm sure everyone who thought they knew me would have a different perspective on who I am. I challenge anyone to read Mrs. Falwell's book and come away from it with the same feelings about Jerry Falwell. Although I didn't always agree with the man and believe he sometimes said things that were hurtful, the person the book remembers is different than the public persona.

  • Posted By: toni b @ 06/10/2008 11:49:44 PM

This country was founded on the right to worship God. It was the people that don't like it that were the ones to say that God has no right inthe state issues. If someone expresses how the feel about certain candidates, it does not mean they are pushing the congregation on how to vote. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.Although I would not agree for someone to "cram" thier religion or spiritual beliefs on others, we were put on this earth to worship God and to spread the word of the gospel and lead as many people to salvation as we possibly can. THAT is what we we will ultimately be judged on. Also, as far as the tax exemption, if the churches that maintain a open book policy with their members and the public if someone asks, there should be no issues. We are to also as christians to do mission work and care for our widows and children and people that are less fortunate than us. Taking away the tax exemptions would hinder our God given command to spread the word and missions as we should do as good stewards of the money He has so kindly allowed us to enjoy on earth. As it will not do us any good in heaven!!!! I believe I am a spiritual person and have a relationship with God and am proud to say it. if oyu are not, you are welcome to speak your opinion on the matter, but don't try to hinder us doing what we feel is the right thing to do.

  • Posted By: mnmanariesram @ 06/10/2008 11:43:45 PM

There is no such thing as a "holy spirit" living inside of people.
    What ridiculous claptrap nonesense.
No wonder Karl Rove found it easy to take both elections.
George W Bush has no "holy spirit" inside of him and he does not speak for a "god".
Why are we failing so miserably in Iraq and why is the economy in such a horrible mess if "god is on George W Bush's side?
christians like Falwell do not have a rational brain in their body.

Snark on: Maybe it's because the fundies didn't hate gay citizens enough. And kill enough Muslims. And torture enough might-be terrorists.

The difference is, people looking to buy porn, gambling, etc.- KNOW they are being conned. Unfortunately, the types of people fooled by folks like Falwell are just looking for any straw to grasp to, SOMETHING to believe in. He was a leader, I will give him that- in an absolute SEA of followers. If you are one of the big hitters like JF was, and you truly believe in your cause, then die broke. That simple. Place money in endowments. Do something with it besides leave it to a family who doesn't understand the bloodshed involved in fleecing it from an unsuspecting public. Any pastor/preacher/priest that even MENTIONS political subjects in his church should have their tax-exempt status stripped permanently. PERIOD. If he were as effective as he claimed to his congregation, he certainly shouldn't have to tell them how to vote, now should he??

    Posted By: MauiKimo @ 06/10/2008 23:27:54
Comment: How many people have sat at a black jack table and just knew the next hand was going to start them on a roll, only to end up broke and broken. How many men and women have felt the pain of relationships torn apart because they cannot get out of a porn habit. Why is it that the most unfar tax, a lottery, preys on those who can least afford it. Do they really think they are just throwing money away, or do they hope that this will be the ticket that changes their lives.
True, there are many who give money to "churches" thinking they gain favor with God, will get healed or what ever. But there are many more who give money with a clear eye and sound mind out of a desire to help the world through the activities of their church. They see the good there money does, they know who "spends" it and they can hold people accountable.

Is it ok to endow colleges, like Harvard or Liberty?

Also, if actors, and others can advocate for particular causes or candidates, why cannot a preacher? If you are going to silence the pastors on the right, how about those on the left, I don't hear anyone going after Sharpton.

Don't a lot of people ask other there opinions about causes and candidates, why not the preacher. In the lead up to the American Revolution, churches often were the most vocal about freedom.

Why shouldn't churches talk about the things that effect the lives of those around them. Everyone else does, or does the Freedom of Speech not apply to everyone. You don't have to agree wtih me or I with you to support each others right to talk as we are now.

Comment: You have made it obvious that you are an intelligible person, Maui. No confusion there. However, sooner rather than later, if the Government- with the full backing of organized religion (Falwell's church case in point..) has its way, neither you or I will any longer have the right to speak freely about what we please. Go to youtube and look at the movie "Endgame." Scary stuff- and completely coming to pass based on facts. have a great ni
