2) in 1972 Shirley Chisholm received a little over 430,000 votes in the democratic primaries (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democratic_Party_%28United_States%29_presidential_primaries%2C_1972). There were over 7,000,000 total African American voters (http://www.eac.gov/clearinghouse/docs/voter-registration-and-turnout-in-federal-elections-by-race_ethnicity-1972.pdf/attachment_download/file), which means, assuming EVERY one of her votes were African American, she only recieved on 6% of the African American vote.

3) In 1996, Alan Keyes received just over 471,000 votes (http://www.ourcampaigns.com/RaceDetail.html?RaceID=13494), yet there were nearly 22,000,000 registered African American voters (http://www.census.gov/population/socdemo/voting/tabA-1.xls, http://allcountries.org/uscensus/10_resident_population_selected_characteristics_and_projections.html). This represents less than 1% of all registered African Americans.
