    Did Ferraro warn the press that her husband was "off limits"? I was in my 30s then, but not politically active (or even aware, other than the fact that Mondale suffered the worst loss in history), so I have no recollection of how that was handled.

    For those who somehow think that opponents to Obama are somehow racist, here are some reasons why a thoughtful person might not want him as president. They are based on political philosophy and policies, which should not be considered "racist".

    Okay-- here are some. .1. On healthcare, his policies would move toward nationalized healthcare. Anyone who has seen socialized medicine in other countries sees a mess. In those cases, the ones who can go elsewhere for better care. That is not to say that efforts don't need to be made to control healthcare costs, or to help those without healthcare. But, the government does a lousy job. Don't destroy a generally good system, and don't use the problems to merely amass power to the government. 2. On education, Obama does not give any credence to the value that privatized education can offer-- especially in those places with the direst situations, the inner cities. 3. On taxation, he merely repeats the mantra that the "rich" are not taxed enough. In fact, it is through those with money that job creation occurs. (I have never gotten a job from a welfare recipient.) Let's fix the tax system by moving to a flat tax, not continuing the mess we have now. Also, let's end the death tax, that really hurts those in the middle. Rich people, like the Kennedys or Bushes don't have a problem, their children will get an inheritance. But, those in the middle and at the bottom should also be able to pass along something to their heirs. 4. On national defense-- hopefully we can agree that it is important to be prepared to defend ourselves. Hopefully we can also agree that some leaders are less trustworthy than others. If we negotiate or meet with world leaders, it should be from a standpoint of national purpose and goals. Also, when it comes to the sacrifices of our soldiers, we should not flippantly say lets set an arbitary timetable-- that only gives strength to our enemies, and we do have enemies in the world. I could go on. But, these are some legitimate concerns and disagreements.

    None these reasons for voting against Obama are based on racial background, etc. If the candidate were from Mars or white, and held the views Obama has, many thoughtful Americans would oppose that candidate too. It is dangerous to denigrate one's political opponents as somehow "evil" or "racist" if they will vote against you. In an honest debate, we will disagree, and in the America I know, it is okay to disagree, and to vote for the other candidate if you disagree. Only one-party states, and authoritarian governments use that type of stigma to tar and feather their opponents.

      To Americans who think it's okay to refuse healthcare to people who can't to pay for it, I say wise up. What percentage of people in the USA can afford any kind of surgery much less an organ transplant? How many can afford chemotherapy? In Canada and countries with 'socialized' medicine, no one will lose their home or life's savings to pay for their healthcare no matter how expensive it is. When America wakes up and realizes that 'socialized' medicine is better for their health than 'socialized' war, they'll be very happy.

        Problem is in Canada you might die in the time it takes you to receive those health care services. They wait years sometimes for surgery. What good is a free service if you get sicker in the time it takes for you to get the help. There is health care assistance for those that need it here in America, sometimes one needs to be persistent but about finding it but it is available. Re: England...The care is substandard to what we have here in America. i know becuae I have a relative living there now. No comparison to American medicine. I am in healthcare so I know of what I speak.

          Here in Canada we may have a bit of a wait time but if our physician feels we need expedited care for life threatening illness our government will pay to send us to the U.S and pay the cost of care. It seems to me you have no real knowledge of our system and have bought into the bs you have been fed by repulicans for years. Here's an idea - research this stuff and form your own opinion, if you don't you are just another sheep.

            Sounds like a really good use of Canadian tax dollars to send you to a country that does not have your kind of government provided medical care. How much does the government spend to send the average patient to the USA for treatment? I think that seems an absurd solution to a broken system. Also I have heard that some of the Canadian medications that are so cheap are manufactured in countries where there are poor regulations on manufacturing and that some of the drugs don't even contain adequate levels of the medication...sign me up...NOT.

              loriw: Canada's 'socialized' healthcare dollars are well spent. America's 'socialized' warfare dollars are iffy. "Average" patients in Canada aren't sent to the USA for treatment. All treatments are available in Canada but if a patient would be required to waittand it's dangerous for that patient then the healthcare system will pay for out of country care. What's important is the patient gets the needed care without going broke in the process. Canadians always buy travel insurance when travelling to the USA to ensure they're not bankrupted by an American hospital stay. Canadians enjoy safe prescription medications at a reasonable cost, which is why Americans do whatever they can to get their hands on them.

                Elizabethpaige are you Canadian and have you received medical care in Canada?
                Also I have an American niece who gave birth in England about a year ago-said it was awful, no nurse helped her through the labor +inadequate pain control etc. Sometimes you get what you pay for.
                I work in healthcare and know that America has resources for those who are uninsured.

          But what good is readily available surgery to those millions of Americans who cannot have it because they can't afford it? Americans who like to argue against 'socialized' medicine try to cite Canada's healthcare system as some kind of failure but the truth is that Canada is justly proud of its healthcare. Canada has excellent surgeons and specialists but if there is a shortage then Canada will pay for needed treatment elsewhere. Canadians have had medicare since the 1940s and do not want a survival of the fittest approach to healthcare.

      Thank you Dennis, I appreciate YOU finally elaborating on your truly misguided beliefs about Barack's positions on all of the aforementioned policies.
      But, even if you knew exactly where Barack stands on Universal Healthcare (meaning people have a company that will offer them insurance even if they have a pre-existing condition like cancer or asthma, the same company like an Aetna can buy into the gov't incentive to reduce their costs and offer these kinds of policies to EVERY citizen, the gov't would then pay the benefit through taxation, rather than we the people paying 70% of our healthcare bills for paper processing fees - take out the middle man) that means, if you have your own insurance, keep it, if you don't you can buy it even if you only make $15K a year and it is set to fit your means, the gov't subsidizes the rest and incentivizes companies to offer these policies. But your costs will go down b/c of the competition, b/c those companies will be able to negotiate for cheaper drugs etc his plan is very 21st century and it is NOT socialized medicine. That is only a bumper sticker catchphrase that those that you support have brainwashed you to accept as truth. Equating Universal Healthcare with socialized medicine is ridiculous. This is why I don't trust any person who only speaks in labels - tax and spend liberals and right wing conservatives. That's what I hear when you throw terms like that out.

      But we just agree to disagree, you buy the neocon schpiel, I don't. I wonder why you're not blogging with fellow republicans then. Oh well...maybe you just like confrontation.         For a truly civil debate, how about we jettison partisan labels like "neocon", which I am not. Would you like it if someone called you some name? How about we agree to disagree? It is time for the political debate to "moveon" beyond labeling each other. For though we disagree, most of us care about the U.S., and are hard working individuals. Labeling is something practiced by "lower class" political systems, such as 1-party states, and worse.

          Sorry Dennis if you thought I was "calling" you a neocon - and trust me, I've been called names before, I'm from appalachia and my skin is brown - that's not what I meant, but your point is taken. I did characterize those policy positions as neocon and you are absolutely right about that. I do appreciate the civilized debate that we've had here. I just don't agree with your sentiment that programs that benefit the people and not just war - programs which we are required to pay taxes to fund whether they benefit us individually or not (part of being a democracy btw, out of many we are one, etc) - is socialism. I fundamentally disagree with having citizens pay taxes to a gov't for so many taxes and to expect that NONE of that money should be spent to help its citizens is absolutely wrong. But again, I realize philosophically we just don't see eye to eye. Do you agree that we need to draw down this war, that there are no military solutions without a political settlement?

    After 20 years of elected public service, he is nothing close to a surgeon out of medical school (a 20 year surgeon is no joke also). This is rhetoric that is so attractive to one inclined that it does not seem funny to them when repeated. Now we can take umbrage with him on real issues not manufactured rhetoric.

    I'll give examples:
    RHETORIC
    - everyone will experience tax increases under BO (this was said by McCain)
    ACCURATE (from McCain leaning viewpoint)
    - some (notice the vagueness) will experience a tax increase under BO.
    ACCURATE (from Obama leaning viewpoint):
    - those making over $250K will experience a tax increase under BO, those making under will experience further reduction. those making under $250K will not experience a further reduction except for maybe a total $28 over summer on the gas tax repealing - which might be lost due to gas price increases off the resulting increased demand (economic law).

    RHETHORIC:
    Obama has NO experience
    ACCURATE:
    Obama has less experience in Washignton than McCain.

    Now we can agree or disagree or discuss these and other issues factually.

      annapolis is a college. In fact it is considered a very prestigious university. Look up the entry requirements Ill bet you couldn't get in! Now if you want to bash Mccain because he got bad grades and graduated near the bottom of his class have at it. I feel a persons life experience far outweigh what one does in college but if you believe being a war hero and a senator doesnt make up for bad grades in college you are entitled to your opinion.

    Say NO to Obama: I would consider this, not as a suggestion but as an imperative move to remove this Senator from the status as the Democratic nominee. There is nothing to learn about this senator, except that he has an exceptional ability to create believeable illusions. Really & truly, what has this man accomplished in his political career so far ( 3 yrs since he was seated in the senate ) that grants him the ''PRIVILEGE'' to sit in the oval office as commander in chief? Americans must ask themselves this question & if they are able to handle the truth, then they must abandon their support for him & transfer it to where it belongs.         The USA is a superpower because it has nuclear weapons but the wars that America has been involved in since 1945 could never be fought with nuclear weapons. Russia. China, India, Pakistan, Israel, Britain and European countries also have nuclear weapons and Americans don't relish the notion of nuclear bombs aimed at a town near them. Nuclear weapons are a deterrent, period. So let's move beyond our superpower mentality and war that is sucking the economic life out of America while its infrastructure, manufacturing, employment, immigration, healthcare, education, and repayment of trillions to China and other countries are neglected. There's plenty to do in America but no money to do it thanks to Iraq. Americans need to carefully think through the 'superpower' approach to its friends and adversaries.
        Kids and grandkids deserve a future, too.

        Incomplete biblical reference assimilated conventiently against a candidate. The anti-Christ was quoted to have convened a battle against Israel. There is no scenario in which he can accomplish this as an American president. There is liturgical debate about whether this is all literal or figurative. Why not leave the bible out of it. Show me someone who will interprete those scriptures convincingly. Let's just summarize - we dont like the guy, we will draw inspiration for this from anywhere, maybe its not even about hte guy.     hypocrisy in the Obama camp? Just because a guy makes millions of dollars creating the environment that has caused the real estate market to collapse doesn't mean we should judge him. If you want to know why your neighbors house is being forclosed on you don't have to look any farther than fanny Mae. You see how it works is Fannie May is the secondary market for mortgages. Under Jim Johnson they kept some very loose standards for bundling mortgages. (what this means is they didnt make sure the loans were solid before packaging them up and selling them to investors.) The loose standards at Fanny mae meant shister Mortgage companies could make loans to any idiot with a paper route and they did. The idiots didn't even really have paper routes but they claimed they did and used stated income to qualify for the loans and purchase homes. They didn't move into these homes instead they sold them as investments to other qualified paper boys at a profit and the cycle kept spinning house prices upwards until two years ago when someone noticed and the whole market began the ugly decent we are stuck in right now. To be fair Obama probably had no idea Jim was the president of fannie may and he probably had no clue as to how this system works. But we expect more from our candidates than plausible deniablitiy is it an unfair standard probably but thats american politics. We are coming after your idea's, your associates,. your business practices and your families statements if they make them so be ready.

    Check his TRUE education level,when he entered Miliatary arms with HIGH SCHOOL certificate.
