McCain campaign spokesman Brian Rogers: It doesn't bode well for Senator Obama's pledges to run a campaign of hope and change when on the first day of the general election he's launching the same tired negative attacks that the American people are so sick and tired of.

What the American people truly are sick and tired of is politicians lying through their teeth even when faced with cold hard fact and truth. The Republicans certainly weren't complaining about "negative attacks" when people who were speaking out against the Iraq invasion early on were lambasted by the media and they had the public feeding on whatever line they chose to give out. But when the truth about the war and the patent falsehoods that were propagated by the administration started coming to light, suddenly it was "the liberal media attacking" them.

An administration that can't stand straight in the light of day and stand tall in the face of truth is not one that I would choose to be led by. Our Constitution, our very government was created in defiance of tyranny and once stood as a beacon that several other nations the world over chose to follow. How far this government has fallen from that ideal. You don't create democracy by invading another country and installing your own puppet government, for that is the path of the despot and the tyrant. You don't lead with the whip, you lead by example.

McCain has shown time and again that rather than stand straight and face truth, he would instead twist and distort it to make him appear something he is not. Values he once spoke out for and stood by he has readily abandoned in order to curry favor from his own party. Even if he chose to break away from Bush and his plans, it would still be a third term of an administration rife with dishonesty and double dealing with the American public.

I am an independent myself, and as a Texan, I honestly had some hope for Bush making a positive change. Those hopes were shattered his first year in office, though, before even 9/11. Watching and reading about Obama, however, I find myself hoping again. He has endured countless attacks on his person and integrity, and has weathered them all with greater poise and honesty than most I have seen in a long time. He says that he is for a more transparent government and greater communication with the people of this nation. Unlike his adversary McCain, his voting history and his policies bear that out. There is a world of difference between a "negative attack" and "setting the record straight," and it's time the American public became more active and started learning about that. I do believe that Obama is this nation's best chance at this juncture in history to rise once more and stand on its own in the light of day. When choosing your leader, be sure it is one that listens to you and speaks for you, not one that speaks to you and would have you listen.

Well, djomig47, I'll tell you who can "stop change". Kingfish Wright can stop change.

    capdemo :

I see the trolls are at it again. Your message of smears is just so tired. I think the American voters who never even read these blogs, are so tired of negative smears from McCain's supporters that they are developing deaf ears to everyhting negative they say about him. GOod luck republican trolls, dittoheads and right wingers.Your negative campaign wont work this time!

    • Posted By: stematwork @ 06/12/2008 4:11:36 PM

and i guess all the negative attacks that democrats have used for decades against the GOP are merely "facts"?

you lefties live in a fantasy world where your criticism is considered "nuanced observation" while the rightie's are mindless trolls spreading fear.

Unusual for Newsweek to be even remotely critical of Obama. Interesting. This thing with Johnson must be far worse than what it seems.

Obama is nothing new here; He's just another smooth talking far-left Liberal.

  • Posted By: soldieretta @ 06/12/2008 4:04:38 PM

Maybe I'm slow but I don't think Jim Johnson is a big issue. The message is change.... just because you followed the satus quo in the past does not mean you're not allowed on the bus

  • Posted By: djomig47 @ 06/12/2008 4:04:30 PM

Wow wow wow...my job here is done! Who can compete with ignorance? If Obama is not American, how do you think he got to the senate, Einstein? As to the rest...oh well! The only thing that is certain is that...change is coming, who can stop it!!?

Obama all the way!! If you want to go Republican or Independent-- I wish you well, but we got keep on moving forward up the hill. chugga, chugga, toot, toot.

  • Posted By: comyns @ 06/12/2008 1:13:47 PM

"Throw Johnson under the Bus" What a melodramatic statement. "The likes of Samantha Power". She called Clinton a monster, tried to take her words back with 5 seconds of saying them and resigned within days--not weeks-- of her remarks, which were published against her will, becoming public knowledge. When Wright REPEATED his offensive remarks, Senator Obama disowned him within days, NOT months.

    • Posted By: soundiata @ 06/12/2008 2:10:49 PM

You nailed it Sir! Better make the appropriate decision at the right time then stick to a failing decision like Mcbush! At least we know Obama is not stubborn and would be able to change his mind "on time" on a failed policy.

      • Posted By: Southerner @ 06/12/2008 4:00:49 PM

Obama changes his mind when he gets CAUGHT. It has nothing to do with doing the right thing. It's all about appearances. It took him TWENTY YEARS to denounce Wright, and then he only did it when Wright called him a politician. It had nothing to do with the racist and inflammatory rhetoric coming from the pulpit, and everything to do with the fact that he was making Obama look bad.

This guy is a sleazebag. A classic Chicago politician!

A Presidential candidate who has Washington insiders on his campaign. These insiders enjoy special favors and commit illegal acts designed to increase their personal wealth. OBAMA. Change you can believe in! sure...

    • Posted By: J.Richter @ 06/12/2008 3:55:01 PM

By the way, a presidential candidate with insiders on his campaign is McCain
      - Phil Gramm - got us into the housing mess. huge player compared to Johnson. he wrote and lobbied for the law that made all this mess possible and benefited from it
      - Charlie Black major lobbyist. Lobbys for the worst dictators around the world
      - the other five that have resigned.
Note addressing your above complaint: to be fair none of them including Johnson has done anything illegal (under the law). But yes I agree with you they should all be gone and Barack did the right thing.

    • Posted By: J.Richter @ 06/12/2008 3:38:32 PM

I thought that was the point of him resigning. Washington almost has no clean hands left. Obama has only started the clean out process. In the interim it will be hard to find folks to get some things done. What would you have him do? Or its a no win situation for him. Search deeply within yourself for a scenario or response that would have satisfied you.

As I wonder if all Americans are aware that any individual that holds a position within our Goverment doesn't pay Social Security nor do they pay into Medicare. Therefore, the Goverment doesn't match 6.2% on Social Security nor do they match 1.45% on Medicare. As they speak of our economic struggles and the possibility that Social Security or Medicare will not be around in the coming future, no one has commented on why they have never contributed nor has their contributions been matched leaves a sour note on my mind. Believe me, if they were like every other American in the USA these Goverment benefits would not be in the shape it is today. I am finding it hard to vote for anyone at this point. It's not fair nor is there justice behind this type of policy they leave behind. They make more than anyone and yet, they are exempt from having these deductions made through payroll. With this in mind, who is our right candidate? None that I've seem have even commented on these issues and never will. Why? I realize that this comment is gear around this topic, but it is worth reading when we face the possiblity of losing what we considered part of our retirment and medical insurance when we reach this prime age, which is being move to an older age bracket. This is totally unfair and unconstitutional. I think as Americans we need to pull together and have them join the band wagon and pay what they are suppose to contribute. Then these benefits may be around for our children to come! Stand up Americans, don't let this continue! We are requried and so our the young people in this world. Even when they know it won't be around when they become eligible. Instead, they speak of Universal Health plans that will cover all Americans and yet they miss the most obvious and that is with their contributions these plans would be strong and viable.

I cannot understand when people discount , discard & ignore the values of experience. I wonder - how does a lawyer rise to the position of a supreme court judge & how does a soldier rise to the rank of a commander.
The Obama supporters are so very wrong about his ability - this man should be removed from the status of the democratic nominee immediately.

    • Posted By: soundiata @ 06/12/2008 2:20:21 PM

He wouldn't be where he is now Without experience at all ! I'm so sick and tired of people claiming he has no experience. Like Bill clinton said in 1992 "there is the right kind of experience and the wrong kind of experience". The wrong kind of experience is the one hillary and Mc cain has, which led us to an unnecessary war, a srumbling economy and so on.

  • Posted By: djomig47 @ 06/12/2008 3:43:54 PM

I'm simply sickened by all of this. Come oooon...!! What do you exactly want the guy to do? It seems like...nothing he does is good enough. First of all, people including the media and the other person (whomever he is) were complaining about Obama not living up to his own standard despite the fact that he made it clear of what Mr. Johnson's position entails, and that he couldn't possibly vet the vetters because he would have to vet the vetters of the vetters of the vetters of the vetters...; now that, to focus on issues, instead of nonsense rethoric and distraction he accept the resignation of the vetter in question, he still isn't good enough, and for Maccain to even suggest it's a lack of judgment? What kind of a B**Sh_ that is!!? Give me a break...he was the first one to start 'yapping' about it! Well...I suppose it's your choice America. Go ahead allow Bush his third term! And maybe, just maybe, we will be too consumed with our soldiers being all over the world fighting that we won't realize time for dinner has passed '2 days' ago!

There's a little more to it than that, Newsweek, but folks will have to get the rest of their info from the Wall Street Journal.

    To: Hope& Peace / Stormz:
A lot can be said, but let me put it in a nutshell - can you imagine a surgeon just out from medical school, called upon to perform a delicate brain operation. I don't like to use the word experience, involvement however, is preferable - Obama did not spend enough time in this hostile political arena, to have the opportunity to develop the applicable wisdom that is necessary to extricate this great American nation from it's delimma. Obama is likeable very well, but in reality, he represents nothing more than hoplessness & despair & on these grounds, I firmly contest the logic of the political system that gave him the right to be allowed to campaign for the democratic nomination. The system is wrong & should be changed, the world is not what it used to be.

Want that why the guy was resigned. Part of the cleaning out process that will happen in Washington the next few years - if we let Barack fulfil his promise. He has already made good on one promise with the DNC as well as meeting and negotiating (some wrongly call it appeasement) with his first adversary to bring about the best result for everyone with lhe least personal damage on all sides (if only the dems had done this in 1968 or the repubs in 1972 there wouldnt be the fight to convention - of to the death - resulting on loss for everyone). That's already two major changes on how things used to be done or aproached recently.
