Anyone who didn't see the price incease for gas coming is a fool. I have been amazed at all the people who bought big SUV's which are now crying about the price of fuel. Did they really think the price was going to go down or stay the same? Unless we slip into a major recession or a depression, the price is only going to go up. I really enjoy the fact that a bill to allow drilling in certain areas currently restricted was killed in subcommitee . I guess when your in politics you really do forget about the people struggling to make ends meet.
The economic squeeze began in earnest on America's middle class & the poor with the advent of the Reagan Administration. After Reagan gave huge tax cuts to the rich, & the deficit sored, Reagan faced a dilemma. In order to bring the nation's budget more in line, Reagan decided to double the Social Security tax (only on the working class) & to double the gasoline tax, knowing full well that such measures would hit the middle class & the working poor by far, the most. Dubya has simply expanded the government's war on the middle class & the poor.
Can't eat gold nor wipe your bum with it. Have you ever tried to break a $5 gold peice at the register-- funny, it's worth $5.
I find it odd that, amid all the helpful tips, "buy gold" - perhaps the ultimate way to beat inflation - is not among them.
We are in for tough times. I watched Bill Moyers (pbs.org) and listened to Holly Sklar. She indicated its like the highs in the 20's before the Great Depression. The extreme rich robbing the poor to get richer and the government accepting lobbyist political monetary gifts turning a blind eye. So much for government by the people for the people. We, the slipping midde class towards poverty, have NO representation in Washington but rather we help bail out savings and loan and mortgage firms. Unions are losing ground only 1 in 8 belong to a union whereas in 1972 1 in 4 belonged to standarized wage building for all - unions. I wonder just where will it all end. I believe corporation with government help is milking us dry then will take the money and invest in other propserous markets..then China will want their trillion dollars which we won't have and come here and claim their land. It could happen in a heart beat. If oil gets shut off it could happen even faster don't you think?
Vote Democratic and get some laws that support the citizens, not the Big Corps, Big Oil & Big Pharma.
Shame when asked 6 years ago about conservation Ari Fleisher said "That's a Big No." It sure was a Big Yes for all the Biggies who got everything they asked for behind closed doors with Cheney.
10) Sign the gas price petition supporting S. 2958, the American Energy Production Act.
That is the single best things we middle class Americans can do for ourselves. $5 gas means nothing to rich politicians; it affects us in the middle so we need to address it. Look around at your daily life. Can you think of anything that is not affected by gas prices? The huge job layoffs, airlines closing, businesses failing, and now charitable donations to the needy falling off a cliff; it's all connected to fuel and it's just getting started.

Great advice except for #6, that's going out on a limb. P/E ratios are historically high right now and we are just entering a bad recession. I think the only thing moderate about our inflation is the way the Government is reporting it.
farmgirl567, as the price of energy rises, something happens. Gradually, starting from the lower income users of energy and moving up the income ladder as the price continues to rise, the consumption of the ever more expensive energy diminishes. Manufacturers then start manufacturing less consumptive motors. Then, the high cost of energy begins to drop because demand for it decreases. Then, manufacturers commence to make the motors more consumptive to pull the large living room sized vehicles that are made again to be raced around by the larger motors. There will always be plenty of room for "duhs" in our consumptive society. We like to scheme against "the system" and the system seems to like to scheme against us consumers. Sometimes the system wins and sometimes the consumer wins. We love to waste energy when it is plentiful. We don't like to scrimp when it is scarce. The Chinese called this pendulum effect yen and yang. We call it simply, Duh. Thanks for reminding me.
Duh. There isn't anything in here on using less energy, which is hitting us hard these days.
You might want to mention I Bonds. They were offered to allow one to hedge against inflation, but, voila, the Consumer Price Index that the government uses to raise your interest rates excludes food and fuel, including gasoline. Where inflation in May rose .6, the index that covers your I Bonds rose only .2. Please do what you can in November to throw these people out of government. The president has to leave anyway, but there is plenty of room to redesign congress.
