Sadly many Obama supporters, including the campaign itself, are still willing to diss HRC -- from booing when her name is mentioned at a campaign event, to hiring Patti Solis Doyle to be Chief of Staff to an as yet unknown running mate, to ruling out Clinton herself as VP. They still don't get it. Her campaign, which was also historic, garnered almost 18 million votes!

Thank you Anna for your article. There are several opportunities Obama has ignored with his theme Change! The misrepresentation and theft in some precincts of caucus voting that denies those working, disabled, in the military, or unable to attend their vote! The chance to give voice to all the under paid low income people that are also in need of real Change - a minimum wage! Hope for healthcare! These issues will take more than a speech to show Obama's interest. To create enough votes to elect a Democrat in Nov, this process needs more than an apology by our DNC Rules & Bylaws Committee members who will never be forgotten. The layers of deception and treachery we expect from Republicans was used by our Party against it's own members! This rift needs an action Obama seems unable to take. He has Caroline Kennedy helping to co-ordinate his VP choice! as if that isn't elitist? (When I first heard, I thought it was a Sat. Night Live joke!) If he's unable to truly bridge this gap, Obama will need more than a speech to explain the destruction of the Democrtic Party! Oh wait, that would be our fault! We will be the ones to blame! We allowed Obama and his band of Egos to play out their game of 50 state strategy leaving real voters and actual DNC rules tossed to the wind. Obama's charm and endless money thrown at all needy delegates and the DNC itself hoping to WIN by All means! This is what we're standing in and there is no good place for a Vote! We Demand Change!

I truly wish this was just about women, but Barack Obama has a deep problem with those people he talked about at the fund raiser in San Francisco. You know those voters that he essentially protrayed as weakminded and overly dependent on their religion and guns. Those democrats he truly doesn't connect with that are a major segment of the population that supported Hillary Clinton. To pretend her supporters that are struggling with backing Barack Obama are doing so without good reasons besides the gender issue is to miss or ignore a very real problem he faces.
I know this is a democratic year and that it probably won't matter because Barack Obama will win anyway, but isn't there something fundamentally wrong with comments in San Francisco that needs to be confronted and corrected, not just to win an election but because what he said was wrong and anyone who actually believes what he said wouldn't focus on the many problems lower income people face.

"The real reason you have to reach out to women like us is that it will signal that you really mean to stand for a different America, a nation in which a black man can take up the concerns of white women for the sake of the greatest good." What does Obama owe white women that he doesn't owe other women? Why do white women deserve extra attention? Why did Ms. Quindlen feel the need to racialize this, I wonder.

    REMEMBER, REMEMBER, REMEBER IN NOVEMBER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The level of disrespect for Hillary like nothing I've ever seen. Its such a "Blinding, God-like" worship for him clinging to every word whether true or false and looking down on everyon else who differs in them in the slightest. I've never seen that before...oh, no I have. It's the same way that Bush supporters acted when he was running. Dont you guys find that scary???? I know two wrongs makes you even but there is a danger here. You are not looking at him. You're just looking at his ideas (Which were stolen from Hillary) I know you dont want to believe that but look at the past debates that they were in. When Hillary was asked questions and she was always asked first) she would have detailed information and agenda of what she wanted to do because she had to be prepared. Obama would just say "go to my website" and that was it. The press didnt want to turn up the heat on him b/c they didnt want to come accross as racist. But in the later debates he changed from referring people to his website to saying " I agree with Hillary" ???????!!!!!! WHAT!!!!!! And the press never jumped on him for that SNL did a parady proving it to be true. This is why we are MAD AND STILL ARE. Finally what Obama supporters think is that we will vote for him out of fear of no choice but the truth is. WE LOST OUR CHOICE and with the continue disrespect we should just sit this one out, or go on vacation. We're use to being not wanted and overlooked so just forget about. BOTH OF YOU.

-By hiring the very person who caused her to lose in Iowa to head his VP campaign
    - By holding rallies in the very state where he stole primary votes from her

-He should right Rev Wright a check for learning his "Great Speaking Style". Go to any African American church on Sunday and you will here the same thing. If you want to get inspired go to church.

McCain should watch out because Obama's starting to steal his ideas:
    - Now saying he'll cut capital gains taxes instead of raising them
-Now he wants to do nuclear when he has voted against it
    - And saying that we should issue another round of rebate checks
(Information from the Wall Street Journal Page A1)

He changes on the issues so no one can nail he down. Two Faced!!!!!!

    REMEMBER, REMEMBER, REMEMBER IN NOVEMBER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I understand that many primary voters are frustrated, but we should not confuse the issues. Barack Obama did not steal the nomination, he earned it--evident in his vast delegate lead.

Also, generalizing and caricaturing the "black church" is not helpful to respectful discourse. The black church is as diverse as this country, and we should not make assumptions about its makeup or individual institutional ideologies.

Vast? Difference of about 130 out of a total of 3434 pledged delegates? 3%-4% is vast?
Has there ever been a closer primary race? I remember that Teddy Kennedy was 400 behind Carter in pledged delegate count at the August 1980 convention; that's the closest I remember.

        • Posted By: elizabethpaige @ 06/17/2008 11:12:59 PM

Vast enough to be pretty well over after Super Tuesday.

          • Posted By: HDavidson @ 06/18/2008 5:38:14 PM

Actually the GAP he finished with was not "VAST", it was big, and she could not gain any ground no matter what she threw at Obama.
The Gap he closed coming from behind, catching up, over taking, and winning was VAST! there feel better now ;)

          WOW! great point...lol 3 or 4%

In 93 the Bulls beat the Suns with one three point shot, but they were still the Champions, last night Boston destroyed the Lakers by over 30 points, and they are the Champions, you see it's not the "spread" it's the final score and the first one to reach it. She FAILED, she was very successful in erh failure as far as showing herslef to be a great politicain, but SHE LOST!!! GET OVER IT!!! it's not a matter of opinion, it's a matter of FACT!

          • Posted By: Core Democrat in Texas @ 06/18/2008 4:28:50 PM

The issue in this string of posts is the defintion of "vast".
Either your reading comprehension is impaired by your hostility or non-existent.

            • Posted By: HDavidson @ 06/18/2008 5:27:02 PM

Well sweetie, "VAST" was defined by the FACT that, as stated, since Super Tuesday, it was realized by ALL involved (except Hill and the Hillerites) that the GAP was TOO "VAST" for her to over come, and that proved to be true, even when she tried to cheat and got her way (not entirely, but FL and MI di get counted). and the Delegates for Obama grew and grew as did the number that left Hill for Barack.
It was OBVIOUSLY a "VAST" spread, even though the percentage was not, the end result was obvious to ALL much earlier than she would concede due greatly inpart to her EGO.

Are we all clear now, Core republicrat in the third largest state in the Nation ;)?

And are so darn mad they will vote for McCain (the anti-christ) and kill more of Americas children...truly a sad group you are.

As a 52 year old white woman who has supported Obama since his 2004 speech at the Democratic Convention I really resent the condecending tone of Anna's editorial. I have been watching Hillary since she became a Senator. I watched her vote for the war in Iraq, banning flag burning, and designating the Iranian Guard as terrorists. I watched her stoop to any low ploy to stop Barck's momentum as a voice for those of us who want to reign in the wrong headed direction this country has taken. I saw her fail to take a leadership role and to change the direction the right has led us in but to give them the power of setting the agenda and tone. To be so blind in support of Hillary because she is a woman and not recognizing her total lack of a message other than I am woman hear me roar (and slander my opponent) is blindness. Loyalty to your gender is admirable but blind loyalty is ignorant. This country needs an Obama not a Hillary. Thank God he is the presumptive Democratic nominee. This white woman is ready for fresh air not the stale stink of the Hillary campaign and Senate tenure.

Thanks for writing a rational article. This angry, older female - disgruntled, teary-eyed, I'm taking my marbles and going home, Hillary devotee thing is getting old.

I am a 50-something female, and these childish women who "threaten" to vote for McCain are embarassing to me. I agree - it reinforces the stereotype of women deciding based on emotion - not facts. It's ridiculous for them to say that Hillary was a target of the press any more than any other candidate - especially a Black person!!!! We could talk about who smeared who all day - but the bottom line is Obama played by the rules, spoke kindly of Clinton throughout the campaign, and got more delegates. Nobody cheated anyone. It was just a close match and Clinton lost.

Obama should not have to pander to women any more than any other group. Democratic women who are truly liberated will use their heads, chose based on the issues, and prove to the men who would like to type- cast them that they are rational Democrats who are team players. They should prove that supporting Democrat positions is FAR more important - If they vote for McCain, it will call into question whether they have biases that have nothing to do with the issues - be it bias against men, or bias against people of color...I hope these women recognize their power by not fearing the power of others.

The inequities I saw as a young female professional are a minimal factor now. True, men still have it better, but not such a big difference now in pay or position. I think another 10 years and even less difference will remain. You can see the younger generation of women don't feel any big disadvantage, which is why they did not feel a need for special representation solely based on being a woman - and did not vote diproportionately for Hillary.

Obama doesn't have to pander to any of us, it won't matter, were not voting for him. I'm not sure why people even write articles like this ... we never said we wanted to be wooed. Dean and Pelosi said we would be united and unfortunately some democrats actually believed that, but they were wrong. I'm not sure why this is a surprise to anyone. They polled us how many times ... the story has not changed, but now that we are not doing "what the DNC said we should" OMG everyone is so shocked. Please ... give me a break!

That kind of thinking is fascism.

          • Posted By: HDavidson @ 06/18/2008 5:15:12 PM

One way of looking at it...I guess, OR to use the POWER of your vote for REVENGE is not only wrong but should be a crime, and is far more BUSH/MCCAIN like than me saying the commission of such an act is un-American, it is, not to disagree, but to seek revenge through the further destruction of this country, is every bit and evil act of a pouting woman (or man)

I am a 44 year old female who voted for Hillary because I still believe she is ready to lead our country. I have been a Democrat since 1992 when I voted for Bill Clinton. I honestly don't think I can support someone I don't believe in and trust. My inlaws live in TX and told me exactly what happened during the El Paso caucuses. Most of the Clinton supporters were turned away and not allowed to cast their vote. I believe that the Obama team have shown how unAmericans they have been. We are supposed to be united, but I have never felt so alone in my 16 years. Obama and the DNC has shown over and over how much they don't care about the women's vote. How will they win without reaching out to the 18+ millions who voted for Hillary???

    • Posted By: Core Democrat in Texas @ 06/18/2008 4:20:53 PM

Same thing happened at many of the Texas caucuses. It was disillusioning.

    ????DEMOCRATIC PARTY UNITY????????????
    Washington Post June 16, 2008
An Obama Crowd in Detroit Comes Ready to Boo
    By Anne E. Kornblut
DETROIT -- Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm received a deafening chorus of boos Monday night at her mention of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, the candidate Granholm once backed for the Democratic presidential nomination.

The jeering from thousands of Obama supporters at Joe Louis Arena came after Granholm acknowledged her support of Clinton, and they seemed to take her aback. "Come on now," the governor pleaded before finally continuing, "I'm proud to say I'm standing with her and all of you" in supporting Obama.

A few moments later the same fired-up crowd booed former vice president Al Gore when he urged Democrats to be respectful of the likely Republican nominee, Sen. John McCain. "In that case I'm glad I brought it up," Gore dryly responded.

Only Gore's reminder to the crowd that Obama had urged civility during the election seemed to calm the passions, prompting a round of applause.

When Obama took the stage, he reprimanded the audience for booing Granholm over Clinton, then went on an extended detour to praise his former rival.

"I want everybody here to be absolutely clear," Obama said. "Senator Clinton is one of the finest public servants we have in American life today. ...She is worthy of our respect. She is worthy of our honor. She is going to be at the forefront of bringing about change."

He dismissed the speculation that Clinton backers would not support him, that his supporters would not welcome Clinton's, and said: "Let me tell you something. We're all Democrats."

BY THE WAY, I WOULD EMBRACE THE HILLARY SUPPORTERS IF SHE WON, I THINK ANY DEMOCRAT IS BETTER THAN ANY REPUBLICAN. BUT WHY SHOULD WE BE EXPECTED TO INITIATE THE EMBRACE, OR EVEN TOLERATE THIS RETALIATION TALK, ESPECIALLY WHEN THERE ARE SO MANY SOCIALLY NEGATIVE AND AMERICA AND LIFE-CHANGING NEGATIVE THREATS COMING FROM THAT CAMP? WHAT KIND OF DOUBLE STANDARD IS THAT? I AM JUST BEING HONEST. OBAMA SUPPORTERS WOULD HAVE NEVER THREATENED TO UPSET THE BALANCE OF THE ISSUES AND WHAT TO DO ABOUT THEM AS SEVERE AS THIS. THE ISSUES SUPERCEDE ANY PERSONAL DIFFERENCES, SERIOUSLY.

    • Posted By: dreffein @ 06/16/2008 4:58:15 PM

This is a joke - right? Obama supporters throughout the Newsweek blogs have thorougly trashed Hillary - calling her every name in the book. And this continued even after Obama won. So you honestly think these same people that call her a liar, murderer, cheat, witch, b*tch...when she lost would give her their support if she won? Get real.

      • Posted By: HDavidson @ 06/16/2008 5:19:00 PM

Dreffin, it's not a joke, you and other Hillary supporters act as if all you have ever done is sung praises to Obama and NOT EVER in ANY WAY said a bad thing about him, when IN FACT, you guys/ladies jumped on every band wagon the republican'ts put out there from Ayers to Wright, you were there sing the ROVE song. When Obama supporters responded with passion and conviction, you, as if you had any right to, got your feelings hurt, then as it became MORE and MORE evident that she not only "could" not win but that she "would" not win, you all including the "BEST CANDIDATE" (according to her and her supporters) wanted to cheat, lie, what ever it took because she and you thought her "entitled".
You and Hillary have done nothing but embarrassed yourslves with desperate emotion and now after the smoke has cleared, you still can't let go of the emotion and think clearly...Fortunately, Obama leads in every catagory out there, so really it's moot whether you do or don't choose to support the DEMOCRATIC nominee, ya know the one that one fare and square, remember if you TRULY count ALL the popular vote because ALL voices should be heard, you then count the caucuses and OBAMA got more popular vote than any candidate EVER (the REAL number).
if you feel the need to pout, that's you're right, but what a shame, and you only show your true self.

to quote John Rambo "you drew first blood, not me"

Setting aside Obama, HILLARY IS NOT THE RIGHT WOMAN for the job...that's all, if she were I would have never stopped supporting her, but she is right there with Lieberman, on just about every level.
And then you guys call for McCain/Clinton ticket...lol "100yrs of MASS RETALLIATION!" that could be their slogan ;)
No feelings here, but I am not gonna sit by while wolves in sheeps clothing try to gain votes for a man who will strike the final blow to this country, to my country. McCain is the enemy to all that America stands for. Hillary supporters, I assume , are Democrats!!!
You don´t have to sway Democrats to vote democratic!!
Especially when the agenda of both Obama and Hillary is practically the same!
But, wait a minute; Hillary says it much better in her own words:

" What Senator Obama and I share
            is so much greater than our differences;
and no matter who wins this nomination,
I will do everything I can to bring us together

No, personally I never trashed her name in any of my blog postings, nor would I. My brother-in-law met her, and I have the upmost respect for her. I think she has raised the bar and made it possible for women to become president. I can feel more comfortable at 54 that we may have a woman president in my lifetime...

Now we have to move forward, regardless of feelings of ill-will towards the respectivee candidates and unite behind one.

It has been the stated goal of the religious right to appoint conservative judges to overturn Roe vs. Wade for years. Bush is on board with this plan. Every single judge that Bush appointed to every single Federal bench that came open during his tenure was a right wing Christian conservative. The Democrats were stymied when the GOP controlled congress, and Bush got to appoint two right wing Supreme Court Justices.

First Bush appointed John Roberts to replace Sandra Day O'Connor when she stepped down. When Chief Justice Wm. Rehnquist died in 2005, Bush appointed Roberts as Chief Justice, and then filled O'Connor's empty chair with Samuel Alito. Both Roberts and Alito are Catholic, and both are outspoken against abortion.

Bush has appointed two of the nine Justices, including the Chief Justice. The current Supreme Court has been sharply divided on a number of high profile issues, including abortion rights, affirmative action, eminent domain, gay rights, the separation of church and state, sovereign immunity, and states' rights. The number of close votes in cases involving these areas suggests that a change of one or two key justices could completely shift the thinking of the Court on such issues.

Right now there are four Justices who are elderly and will soon either retire or die. The next President will get to appoint at least two new Justices. If the next President is McCain, those two will both be conservative right wing Christians. McCain has publicly PROMISED to do this, and explicitly said that his goal is to overturn Roe vs. Wade.

Most Americans, even most Republicans, value the separation of church and state. That clause is in our Constitution to protect us from exactly what is going on in America today! Allowing any religious group (especially a radical one) to control the interpretation and application of our laws in the highest court in the land is NOT democratic. Nor is it wise.

I don't care if you are a disappointed Hillary supporter or an undecided Independent or a life-long Republican or are pro-Obama. ANYONE, regardless of stripe, needs to vote against a candidate who had declared his intention of appointing partisan judges. Judges are supposed to be impartial. That is the basis of our legal system. Without that, you might as well live in a dictatorship, without recourse to law.

Roe v Wade is NOT endangered by the election of McCain as President!

It is all but certain that the Democrats will expand their majorities in both houses of Congress - the congressional generic ballot poll gives the Dems a 12% lead. Whereas the President has the sole power to NOMINATE candidates for the Supreme Court, ONLY Congress has the power to CONFIRM them - under the "advise and consent" clause of the Constitution.

If McCain nominates an extreme right-wing ideologue, a Democratic-controlled Senate would deny confirmation. A strong Democratic Senate will ensure Roe v Wade is not in danger with McCain as President.

A real life example that proves this point: during the Reagan administration Pres. Reagan nominated judge Robert Bork and the Democratic Congress denied confirmation. (That gave birth to the new verb "to bork" - as in, "the Democratic-controlled Senate borked the President???s nominee.")

Please note that Justices Roberts and Alito were nominated by W and confirmed by a Republican-controlled Senate (before the 2006 election).

You Obama lovin sweetie! You do not speak for me or for the 18 million others who voted for Hillary.
So it doesn't matter to you that Obama has been a member of a racist church for twenty years right? Lets look past that. So it doesn't matter to you that Obama's friends and associates have been found guilty of fraud. So it doesn't matter that Obama has literally no experience right, lets look past that. So it doesn't matter that the DNC selected Obama not elected him right? Lets look past that.
So Character means nothing to you? Do you not surround yourself with like-minded individuals? Don't you think Obama does too? Should we just keep looking past everything just so we can say that America voted a black man into office, never-mind he has no experience whatsoever, even though he obviously has racist beliefs, even-though his friends are criminals, see how open Americans are? They will even vote for someone who is in no way ready to be President, just to say they did it? Are you willing to put our nations security at risk? That is exactly what you are doing if you vote Obama into office. You do not speak for women my age. You think just because you say that women are flocking to Obama that will make it true?
You are so full of crap! I want you to tell me what contributions Obama has made since being in the senate.
I want you to tell me why you think this man is ready and prepared to run this country. I want you to answer the hard questions, not just print fluff. I want to know why Obama was the member of a racist church.
I want to know why Resko is his friend and how the deal with the land went down.
I want to know why Obama continues to patronize women? I want to know why Obama made all the sexist remarks and references about Hillary. I want to know why a man who says he can bring people together, has torn apart the democratic party.
Why would you put your faith and our country's future in the hands of the most inexperience candidate.
I refuse to vote for Obama, he is a racist, his character is in question and it would be unethical of me as a lifelong democrat to put our country into Obama's hands. You do not speak for me or the 18 million people who voted for Hillary, you might be ready to make nice to Obama regardless of his shortcomings, I will not because of his shortcomings. My vote is for McCain. The democratic party needs revamping, and the American people will see to it that is done.

I always love the experience argument...I have one statement/question...when JFK was elected to office he had exactly one year more experience in the Senate than Obama. So, if you were old enough when Kennedy was running for office, would you have said the same thing? And I guess he did a poor job with Russia, and a poor job from stopping us from going into WWIII with little experience...NEXT

???Sweetie??? is a term of endearment, not derogatory. And ???touchy-feely??? types sometimes let endearing words slip out when they are trying to be ???nice??? to someone.

I hate it that people beat up on such a classy guy. Your counsel for Obama to pay attention to your concerns would be great ??? but, it comes off as a bit of an ???ultimatum??? ... I think it would be better received by anyone if it didn???t continue to direct anger at Obama, who only played ???hard-ball??? with HRC when she threw the ???kitchen sink??? at him.

He was WAY more respectful to her than she was to him. It???s also a bit hypocritical to pound him for not championing her as a woman before the media, when she was constantly egging on the racist divisiveness. She shocked me with this. I thought better of her and President Clinton. I was so disappointed by their sliding into this tack.

On the whole, I enjoyed your article if, again, it wasn???t so much of an ultimatum.

Don???t be angry at Obama for some of the media???s harshness directed at Ms. Clinton. I can???t believe some women would throw away a guy that would obviously be better for them than McCain because Hillary did not win. He waged the better campaign; it was better managed and better conceived. If she had run her campaign from the start as she did in the latter quarter, perhaps she may have turned the tables. But, she didn???t.

Don???t be angry at Obama for that!

And let's not forget the many months that he, along w/Dean, Pelosi, Kerry, Kennedy, the entire DNC, etc., stood by silently while the media trashed Senator Clinton w/ the help of his supporters on the blogs. Mlbuie - Obama seriously disrepected Hillary just yesterday by hiring her ex-campaign manager who was fired by Hillary for mismanaging her campaign (Patti Solis Doyle) and put Ms. Doyle in the position of chief of staff for Obama's VP pick. Even the Obama pundits (David Gergen, Candy Crowley, MSNBC, etc.) indicate this is a major faux pas as it exposes that Obama is not seriously considering Clinton for the ticket contrary to his words - just words....

Quindlens well-worn screed omits a few salient facts, facts that escape the purely partisan mantras we have come to expect from the Quindlens of the world. [railing at the ''rightwing''in an attempt to revive convenient, mostly non-existant bogieman doens't cut it either].Here are a few missed by Anna.

One. Colleges and universities graduate women holding bachelors/higher degrees at a five to three advantage over males[US Dept.of Education,2007].Thus increasing their earnings potential over that of their male brethren,as a bachelors holder is reckoned to make over 1.5-2 million more in his or her lifetimes over that of those who hold only high-school diplomas.College and university participation by males is in decrease from that of the immediate postwar period beginning in 1946.

Two. Divorced fathers with children[estimated to be eight of ten Americans paying child support that are either actively in the system,or are being tracked by state and federal child support agencies in order to garner past owed support],have sole responsibility, and no others,to provide health insurance to primary custodial children[usually belonging to the mother in nine of ten cases according to the National Organization for Women and the US Dept.of Health and Human Services,2005]. It is males who provide the greatest amount in health care monies and finance to children in America today,as only a tiny percentage of women are mandated to finance such healthcare support by the State in any given area of the nation as a portion of child support. [meaning:All 50 states],with the possible exception of the state of Massachusetts, which demands that all citizens provide self/other health care. The failure of Quindlen to factor in this very firm reality in America today is irresponsible.

Everyone to their opinion, this is America after all. One can speak and not be judged, look at Rev. Wright and father Pflegher, they spoke for the pews for 20 - 30 years their hatred for white Americans, and Mr. Obama and his wife took their children to the church to hear the same rhetoric.. People still praise Obama, and his choices. Well , they are his choices and we have ours. The pundits and elder DNC, Howard Dean, the RBC of the DNC and super delegates made Obama the democratic nominee. Now we have a choice to vote or not vote for him. I believe in one person-one vote, but the democratic party does not. They asked us to vote for them to over ride congress, we did and still no results. Platitudes and rhetoric will not get the job done. Until Obama shows me and others the steps (a b c or 1 2 3) how he is going to bring this change, I will not vote for him as an independent!
