Senator McCain: You've pushed back against the assertion that you want to stay in Iraq for the next hundred years. You've said that as long as we aren't taking casualties, a presence like that in Korea or Germany is fine with you. You've said the surge is working, that casualties are down, that we are winning the war in Iraq...

In the end, it sounds to me like you are saying that if we win the war in Iraq, if we aren't taking casualties... we stay... (after all, according to you, bringing the troops home isn't important...)

But...

If we get our asses handed to us in Iraq - if we suffer a lot of casualties - we must win the war, so... we stay...

You haven't shared with the American people what conditions must prevail for American troops to come home. Can you set forth the conditions you would require to pull all combat and combat support troops out of Iraq?"

???Tennessee Democratic Party Executive Committee member Fred Hobbs tells The City newspaper in Nashville, ???I don???t exactly approve of a lot of the things he stands for ??? and I???m not sure we know enough about him. He???s got some bad connections, and he may be terrorist connected for all I can tell. It sounds kind of like he may be.???

Hobbs was giving an interview to the paper about fellow Tennessee Congressman and Democratic superdelegate Lincoln Davis, who has not yet declared his support for Obama.

Reacting to Hobbs, Davis??? Chief of Staff Beecher Frasier says he does not know for sure if Obama is terrorist connected, but he assumes he is not.???

TOKYO (AFP) - Former US presidential contender Mike Huckabee urged his fellow Republicans on Wednesday not to denigrate Democrat Barack Obama, saying they should celebrate the historic moment of a black candidate.


"Republicans will make a fundamental if not fatal mistake if they seek to win the election by demonising Barack Obama," Huckabee told a news conference on a visit to Tokyo.

The former Arkansas governor said that, having grown up in the segregated South, he never thought he would see an African-American win the nomination of a major party for the US presidency.

"I do not want to have anyone misrepresent or miss the opportunity to celebrate what I think is a landmark achievement, not just for Barack Obama, but for the United States of America," he said.

The country was able "to get to a point where we did not see his colour but we truly saw his charisma, his message and what he brought to the campaign trail," Huckabee said.

Huckabee, who won the first nomination contest in Iowa on the back of support from evangelical Christians, said he hoped Republican John McCain would defeat Obama but urged his party to highlight policy differences and not race.

Huckabee said the troubled US economy would be the top campaign issue and doubted that Obama's race would come into play.

"When people are really hurting -- and they are right now -- they're not looking at a person's race," he said.

Huckabee declined comment on whether he wanted the vice presidential nomination, other than to say that McCain would be more likely to pick him if he chose to focus on winning over Southern and conservative voters.

"You can't accept an invitation to the prom until the football captain asks you. So I'm not going to go out and buy the outfit just yet," Huckabee said.

We???ve had a lot of Montgomery Blair Sibley coverage over the years:

His meritless suit against the DC Circuit (followed by a self-defeating appeal to the Supreme Court, where there was no quorum because he had sued seven of the justices)
his follies in the Palfrey case and in an earlier 2006 Florida prostitution case; and
his vexatious pro se work in family court.
And we didn???t even mention his work representing Larry Sinclair (the fellow who unsuccessfully sued Barack Obama for denying Sinclair???s implausible claim that he had engaged in a homosexual tryst with him) in a lawsuit against three anonymous bloggers. (DBKP blog, Mar. 14.)

After years of over-the-top abusive litigation, the state bar finally took action, and he has been suspended by the Florida bar for three years. No doubt, this will result in a new round of frivolous pro se collateral litigation. It took a contempt-of-court citation for failure to pay child support before the Florida bar took action, so this can hardly be considered a rousing success of the bar in policing its own, even for someone as over-the-top as Sibley. (Florida Bar v. Sibley; ABA Journal, Apr. 25; MPGS blog, May 14; h/t S.G.).

Update: Two commenters (who never appeared on Overlawyered before) implausibly defend Sibley, both posting from BellSouth accounts in Atlanta, GA. Nothing about a divorce requires one to sue seven Supreme Court justices for ???judicial treason??? for denying a (frivolous) certiorari petition from a frivolous lawsuit. He should have been disbarred a long time ago; that he is only being suspended, and then only because of failure to obey court orders, is appalling. He???s been a hazard to his clients and to taxpayers; so, no, I don???t think he???s a ???damn good lawyer.???

Dear One, I agree with you about the horrible social conditions in Iran. I have two things to say about that. One is, Americans need to be VERY CAREFUL not to let the religious right wing take over the Supreme Court, considering that Iran shows you what it really looks like when a nation fails to separate church and state. The second point is that WE, the USA, put those nut jobs in power by placing the Shah in power then controlling his government as a puppet, which infuriated the Iranian people. The Iranian people rebelled against such imperialism, and in the middle of this secular political rebellion, the Ayatollahs seized power. Not to mention the very cogent fact that WE, the USA, gave Iran their first nuclear reactor. Oh, yeah. We forgot all about that. Now we are threatening to bomb them for possessing technology that WE gave them?

And what is all this nonsense about Iran attacking Israel? Iran has been at war with Iraq for decades, and never succeeded in even taking over a neighboring province. How are they going to fight a long distance war with Israel? Iran does NOT have significant military force to back up a nuclear strike, even if it were stupid enough to indulge in one, even if it already had the warheads, which it does not.

And ask yourself, who has strengthened the religious fanatics that control Iran? The USA. First, we give them nuclear power, then we set up conditions for the Ayatollahs to seize power, then we plunge Iraq into civil war and destroy Iraq's infrastructure, which effectively disables Iran's greatest enemy. Furthermore, Bush refuses to have diplomatic relations, only worsening the situation. And McCain threatens to bomb Iran, which is even stupider (and much more real) than Iran threatening to bomb Israel. We have no one but ourselves to blame for the horrible situation in the middle east.

VOTE FOR OBAMA to end all this needless drama.

Several weeks ago, I was clicking through John McCain's presidential campaign website. In the "Events" section I found a listing for a June 13 Townhall Meeting in Pemberton, New Jersey; I decided to attend.

McCain did not pick me out of the crowd to ask a question on live TV, but I was able to speak with him as the event wound down.

This is how it went:

Right after the speech, I knew McCain would work the rope line. Since I was in the front row, it only took me about three steps to get there.

I spoke loudly:

"Senator McCain - I noticed you aren't wearing your flag lapel-pin. May I give you mine?"

McCain: "Yes, sir, you can" (what else was he going to say? - he really wasn't wearing a flag pin.)

now I had him front and center...

"Senator, I spent four years in the Marines"

McCain: "Thank you for your service."

"Oh, no sir, thank you for yours. I have a feeling this is as close as I will ever come to pinning a medal on you." (said as I'm fastening the lapel pin) "Senator - you know our motto is Semper Fidelis - always faithful?"

McCain: "Oh yes, I do"

"Well have you always been faithful to Cindy McCain?"

Deer-in-the-mother-fuching-headlights.

McCain: "Oh no... that's not what I'm going to talk about."

"Have you been faithful to your wife? You won't answer? C'mon - how 'bout a little of that straight talk?"

(crowd beginning to get angry - hissing)

McCain: "Young man, I will tell you that I have a son serving in Iraq in the Marines."

"Yes - I know. I know a lot about you. Have you cheated on Cindy McCain? Why won't you answer?"

McCain turned away.

All of the aforementioned was caught on film and microphone by the networks. As far as I know, it has not been released and probably won't be.

One of the most entertaining side-shows in the three-ring circus that is the American Presidential election is that of Larry Sinclair. In case you???ve not been listening to right-wing talk radio, I'd forgive you for not knowing who Mr. Sinclair is - he's the guy who claims that claims he took cocaine and had gay sex with Barack Obama and is demanding that the Presidential candidate address his allegations.

Normally the right-wing, fundamentalist Christian talk-radio circuit would be the very last forum that might give a voice to an openly gay drug user. These are the same people who blame "the gays" for 9/11, the New Orleans flood and the falling dollar: This is especially significant when you consider that Larry is a sort of stereotypical gay male: He acts and dresses camp and he speaks with a vaguely comical lisp in the way that only fictional gay villians allegedly speak - in short he's the sort of person that right wing radio would find utterly objectionable, so why are the wingnuts so keen to give him the benefit of the doubt

Larry claims that a few years back he went 'cruising' in a limmo around the Senator's home-town of Illinois, and just happened to have a casual hook up with a man who would later become a Senator and later-still become a Democratic Presidential candidate. If true, these allegations would hand the 'wingers a weapon that could politcally destroy Senator Obama - after all the only thing that American conservatives hate more than a drug user is a gay drug user???

Unfortunately, Larry's claims are flimsy and preposterous. His court case against Obama was immediately dismissed for for it???s frivolity and lack of evidence. When Whitehouse.org, an America news-blog offered to give Larry the chance to take a lie-detector test, he failed it twice. And since his torrent of allegations began he's not actually presented a shred of evidence to back up his outrageous claims. Nevertheless, American right-wingers are noted for their tendancy to belive preposterous things for which no evidence exists. A few of them have grown rather fond of Larry's claims and cannot get enough of hearing him dish the dirt on Obama,

he has a 57 state strategy as I recall him saying. love the top ten list of his supporters . they are the Idealistic crowd that goes for his "change, inspiration" routine along with the Bush haters and anti war whiners.

well "change" or "inspiration" doesnt pay bills only tax increases do. tax the rich=cause a deppression. they are the ones that buy goods and services so that the regular guy can by his. without their investment and expenditure in businesses then we would all feel it. Make them negative.......one word DEPPRESSION.
