Obama NEVER made a pledge to use public funds. He filled out a form which asked if he would use public money. He checked yes, then wrote a lengthy explanation stating that he would accept public money ONLY if his competitor agreed to as well. So McCain only accepted public funds AFTER Obama made his decision. Seems to me that McCain is once again show how much of an opportunist he is. So those of you who want to paint Obama as a flip flopper better take a look at your own guy first.

Brother, You can try, but you really can't defend Obama on this one. He wants to win and needs all the cash that he has collected and more. He really can't say that but that's the facts. He is taking a chance that kool-aid drinkers like yourself will fall for it.

RDOMINGUEZ: Holy cow. First, please tone it down on the capitals. Not necessary. Now, you are obviously a person who is going to vote for McCain/Republican no matter what facts are in front of them. You vote the party line, period. That's crystal clear. I, on the other hand, am an independent thinker with no party allegiance. I actually believe political parties are the downfall of this country.

You said "Obama will say anything to get in the White House". Really? I do believe all candidates in any election ever from any party are accused of that. And, it is my opinion that candidates do tend to spin things in order to make things work in their favor. Obama is not the first. McCain and any other candidate will do the same thing.

Now, what is your basis that Obama is lying? Prove it to me with facts! Not opinion. Not media spin. Give me hard cold facts. Don't tell me that Obama signed an agreement because you heard it. Show me that signed agreement and what exactly it says. You can't. You just believe what you hear and assume it is true. McCain says they had an agreement. Obama says there were stipulations. We just don't know and will never know what was agreed to or said because both parties will spin it their way. So your use of "liar" here is not valid because you can't provide any proof.

The fact is McCain is indeed taking money from lobbysists and PACS. There is no debate on that. Whether it is 1.7% or 95% is neither here nor there. It is happening. It would be McCain's fault that he can't raise more than 1.7% of his money from lobbyists and PACS up until now. But, now that the general election is getting started in full gear, that number will go up because vote party line Republicans will try to do anything to ensure that a Republican gets elected. So Obama has decided to be proactive and go with private donations. Nothing wrong with that (until, of course, it is *proven* that Obama has reverted on an iron clad agreement with Obama -- and that can only be *proven* by seeing a written document, hearing the meeting that occured between the two lawyers, etc.).

The fact is you don't know Obama is lying. You just want to believe it and be angry about it because you are so steadfast on voting for McCain that you will believe anything, true or false, to give you that sense of righteousness that need to vote for him and bash Obama.

Come hard with facts and not spin, please.

We "threw" Bush and Cheney in office thinking we knew a lot and look what that got us! Gee, thanks, but no experience and unknown can't be that much worse than 4,000 dead and 30,000 wounded for Shell, Exxon and BP. If Bush and Cheney were Democrats conservatives would have been screaming like banshees for impeachment. Obama can't be accused of anything that even comes close to comparing to the lies of this administration -- which are now supported by McCain. YES, we want change -- and YES, we'll pay to get it!

WOW! No matter what the subject is many of you grab Dr. Wright by the scruff of fhis next and insert him back into the discussion. I understand the newsweek articile is about "OBAMA's Lame Claim About MCain's Money." I fully understand tht he made coomments in 2007 and the early part of 08 regarding the Public Monies but consider the following:
    Neither did he nor did many think that he would be such a formidable candidate;
    His fund raising efforts garnered him more than 300 million dollars;
Are all factors thaqt must be taken into consideration on June 20, 2008. The more prudent rationale behind this change in decision is that he will be able to get into upwards of 40 states instead of the 20 states he would be able to reach with the 84 million dollars from the public Financing tills. It would be akin to "Political malparactice" if he were to not change his mind. Moreover, many of the people who want to support him can do so with our $25- $100 dollar donations and therefore, we would be actually participating in the process and that is reason enough no matter what others may think of it.

Instead of spending all this money on political campaigns, maybe the money should be donated to help the flood and tornado victims, ya think?

Right on! JamezB, RDOMINGUEZ is in a fog, a republican spun fog. Calling Obama a liar for exagerrating a statistic is pretty self-righteous! Given that over 4000 Americans are DEAD and over 30,000 are physically and emotionally damaged because of a LIE. McCain and his Keating involvement? This is not an honest man - I am a native Arizonian and have grown up with McCain and his BS. At least, Obama answered the questionnaire where McCain did not even bother...so, in my world intentional omission is also a LIE! so I would rather someone 'exagerrate' which is different than an outright LIE...than to just not answer at all! You also think Obama's muslim too ? Another well informed mouthpiece that keeps going off!~

In his own words he said he would "aggressively pursue an agreement with the Republican nominee to preserve a publicly financed general election" He has pursued it and John Mcain deciced he was not interested in turning down groups like "Freedom's Watch" who have promised to spend as much as $250 million dollars under the direction of Karl Rove, in order to attack and defeat Barack Obama. Since McCain refused, Obama has every right to decline to us public financing. He broke no promise.

Olderbudweiser: Let's get a LIAR elected FIRST? I think the logic is flawed. FIRST you find out if the person is a LIAR then after their integrity passes the test THEN you elect. You don't ELECT first then ask the questions, that's what's wrong with all the Obama supporters! They want to just throw the man in office knowing very little!

Now that he's decided to opt out, I hope his money dries up! It's only a matter of time before he self-destructs anyway. It won't be long before the novelty of Obama starts to wear off and the money stops coming in, especially when people see he's helping Hillary financially (if he does)!

jack and jill: THIS IS NOT A STORY ABOUT MCCAIN, QUIT TRYING TO DIVERT ATTENTION FROM THE TOPIC, THIS IS A STORY ABOUT OBAMA BEING A LIAR,...STAY ON TOPIC.

I find it interesting that there is no discussion here about how flagrantly McCain actually violated his own campaign finance law when he was running his primary. He is the last person who should be criticizing Obama for opting out.

Aside from the 527 money mentioned here I would be interested to know how much money McCain got to backtrack on EVERY one of his policy posittions from 2000.

McCain is a terrible candidate and the Republicans are totally corrupt.

Obama needs to win this and, at this point, I don't care how he does it. 4 more years of Republican rule will destroy this country.

    • Posted By: OlderBudWeiser @ 06/20/2008 2:04:44 PM

Couldn't agree with you more. Let's get him elected FIRST. Obama is the only chance for change for the better. I feel honored to donate to his campaign and help to make this possible.

The right is rightfully scared now. McCain can't raise enough money to pay for his wife's private jet. His fundraiser in his own state had to be moved from a large venue to a HOUSE with a TENT in the back yard...HIS OWN STATE.

ampere: YOU'RE not being fair. If this were a story about Hillary or McCain, you'd be all over it calling them a liar and a cheat, but in your eyes and every other Obama-supporter's eyes there's a double-standard!! Well I'm sorry, in reality, there is not, no matter how you try and rationlize it by saying it was "strategy or intelligent thinking" Obama said in his own words he would do one thing, and HE DID ANOTHER. THE MAN IS A LIAR!

  • Posted By: jvincen @ 06/20/2008 2:00:34 PM

Weather or not it is intelligent it is dishonest. I appreciate the fact that the media will point out inconsistencies in candidates rhetoric regardless of party.

  • Posted By: RDOMINGUEZ @ 06/20/2008 2:00:04 PM

RAGTOP, THIS IS NOT A STORY ABOUT MCCAIN, QUIT TRYING TO DIVERT FROM THE TOPIC, THIS IS A STORY ABOUT OBAMA BEING A LIAR, IF IT IS FOUND THAT MCCAIN DID SOMETHING ILLEGAL, THAT TOO WILL COME OUT, BUT TODAY, THIS CAME OUT, AND OBAMA IS A LIAR. STAY ON TOPIC.

  • Posted By: ampere @ 06/20/2008 1:58:56 PM

I think Obama has wisely decided to not be 'Swiftboated' by PAC's. He said PAC's will be spending millions of $ in advertisements to mislead americans - like they did during 2004. That is a fair analysis and a proactive measure from Obama's camp. Go for it.

  • Posted By: ragtopdodge @ 06/20/2008 1:58:08 PM

McCain is under investigating for securing a loan w/public finance money. Then he decides to opt out in the primary.

    THAT IS ILLEGAL!

Talk about a flip-flop; yet...not a peep from Newsweek or any other MSM outlet.

Again, more Jeremiah Wright pile-on type tactics by the "liberal media".

  • Posted By: RDOMINGUEZ @ 06/20/2008 1:57:24 PM

Obama will say anything to get into the White House. His supporters say, "Well he's just doing what he needs to do," BUT that's TODAY, and TODAY his lie was strategy, but what makes you think if the man was to win, he wouldn't LIE to you his supporters!?!? And take back some of the things he's promised you??? And try to rationalize it in a similar way??? WAKE UP! He's a liar, he'll lie to anyone to get where he wants to be, and one day, if he were to win ( I don't see it happening) BUT if he did, he'll be lying to you, his loyal supporters who "BELIEVE" in him. SO WAKE UP! HE'S A LIAR! DON'T VOTE FOR THIS MAN!!!!

We foolish americans are so easily lead around by the nose sometimes. There is no story here, all this hoopla about public finance is to distract us from McCain's failing campaign. It will get worse as more people come to the conclusion that Obama does have what it takes to be a good leader and as more people stop letting hysterical fanatics and their rediculous rumors dictate what we think about Obama. He is a smart man that thinks before he acts and is not afraid to adapt his views as situations change. This is not flip-flopping, this is intelligent thinking.
