Everyone should understand that this poll was fatally skewed. Of the 896 registered voters surveyed, 324 Democrats were polled, and 231 Republicans were polled, with the rest identifying themselves as independent. As one might expect, when you poll more democrats, the democratic candidate will fare better. To emphasize this point, 80% of the democrats polled favored obama, while 78% of republicans polled support McCain. It doesnt seem like a runaway election to me.

I don't think it's a runaway election yet but the poll is not skewed. It samples the nation with an error rate of just 3.8%. Fact is, at this time, only 22% of the country admits to being a Republican (+/- 3.8%).

Well you are ignoring the independents. Also, keep in mind that the poll is designed to provide a statistically representative sample of the nation. Fact is, at this time, only 22% of the country admits to being Republican (+/- 3.8%).

TYLER - The price of oil swelled to another record high Monday morning - before dropping back. It almost hit $140 a barrel - but then fell 25 cents. It appears - a recent increase in oil output from Saudi Arabia -- is not driving down crude prices. Former Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich, who started a bipartisan group called "American Solutions for Winning the Future" held little back at the Texas Republican Convention. He wants to use American solutions to change to the U.S. energy policy.

Simply put - he's fed up with Congress: "The problem is not big oil or the foreigners," said Speaker Gingrich. "The problem is not the Saudis. The problem is getting Congress to do it's job." And that job, he says, is to start using the energy we have. "Congress outlaws every conceivable energy source," said Speaker Gingrich. Gingrich is making his case for domestic drilling by launching a campaign with Actor Chuck Norris, with the slogan: "Drill here, Drill now, Pay less." The campaign is urging Congress to do something now to bring down gas prices. Speaker Gingrich also has thoughts on speculators. "It's people who are betting the U.S. is too dumb to produce (its own oil)."

He sides with East Texas Congressman Louie Gohmert -- when it comes to speculators and drilling. "If you began selling off two million barrels a day...we can pump out of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. It would immediately bring down the price of oil." Speaker Gingrich proposes selling off half of the reserve - now. "Do it suddenly..without telling anybody in advance and punish every speculator."The very speculators, he says, that are betting against America."

Give me a break. 15% up when all other polls show 4-5% with no bounce. Newsweek is blantantly liberal, so they're obviously only polling their far left readers. Way to try and swing the electorate by a biased poll. http://www.hellnobama.com

    • Posted By: summer1216 @ 06/21/2008 12:46:32 PM

Actually, this is not true. Another poll with results reported today corroborates the Newsweek poll. A Harris Poll of 2,327 adults surveyed online June 5-13 gave Obama a 44 percent to 33 percent edge. Future polls will begin reporting these results on a consistent basis.

      • Posted By: obamathecommie.com @ 06/21/2008 1:28:44 PM

actually, a TRUE polling must take place - not one slanted with less than 1/4 of the participants being registered republicans..

        • Posted By: edhere @ 06/21/2008 3:06:55 PM

Obviously you don't understand how polls work.

Polls are designed to sample the nation. Selecting a certain percentage from each party wouldn't do that because these percentages change. Fact is, at this time, around a quarter or less of the country says they are Republicans. "Results are weighted so that the sample demographics match Census Current Population Survey parameters for gender, age, education, race, region, and population density." The poll carefully selects people to represent the country statistically. Long story short, just 22% of Americans admit to being Republican (plus or minus 3.8%).

The great majority of the Obama supporters do not know Barack Obama and the liberal news media likes it that way. This guy is so far to the left that he voted against a bill that would have protected a baby born alive during an abortion. He is rated as the most liberal (by the National Journal) in the Senate. His associations are with radical left types. He has accomplished nothing as a Senator. He has shown no leadership traits except to campaign for the presidency. His leanings are to a socialist government just like other Democrats like Maxine Waters who wants to nationalize the oil industry.

What we have here is a news media that is so infatuated with Obama, they provide no critical coverage of him resulting in a public that is ignorant of his qualifications and his voting history. Imagine if a white conservative with the same weak record of leadership and experience was campaigning for the presidency. If the inexperienced white conservative was leading in the polls, the same Obama infatuated news media would be calling the public misinformed and making it their mission to inform them of his weak record and would cast him as an out-of-the mainstream conservative.

    • Posted By: edhere @ 06/21/2008 2:52:05 PM

The media provides no critical coverage of Obama? Are you serious?!? Granted they can't find much to criticize that's relevant but haven't you seen the snippets of angry sermons from his former church played over and over out of context on cable news? Have you been living under a rock? This wasn't just on Fox News. It infected the other cable news stations -- probably because it was ratings gold. Nobody's sleeping in those pews.

"Imagine if a white conservative with the same weak record of leadership and experience was campaigning for the presidency."

We had a white conservative with an abysmal record of leadership and experience - George Bush failed at everything he tried, including running a baseball team. Yet the press and much of the public paid no attention to his record, not of experience, but of FAIURE.

On the other hand, Obama has survived tough Chicago politics, survived a tough primary against the Clinton machine, has been in the Senate and on senate subcomittes, and has learned and grown from each experience.

Bush has managed to neither frow or learn from any of his failures, while Obama has learned and grown from all of his experience and has managed to avoid failures so far.

Leadership and experience is not just about what you've managed to do - it's about what you've managed to learn. Mistakes are mandatory - growth is opptional.

McCain is invested in continuing most of Bush's failures. Even the surge, a short-term military success, will not succeed in the long term. While McCain may have more "experience" than Obama, he certainly isn't putting any of it to good use.

Obama is invested in doing things differently, on trying something new. Some of his proposals will undoubtably fail. He will most certainly make some mistakes. But given the choice between making a deliberate choice to side with failure, or choosing to go forward - I choose forward.

      • Posted By: Jim F. @ 06/21/2008 1:17:55 PM

The Presidency is not a place for on-the-job training and especially for a far-left, inexperienced, unaccomplished politician. Re: the surge will fail. It sounds like you are hoping that the surge fails because, at this moment, it appears to be succeeding. If this is true, you should be ashamed of yourself to be rooting against your country to accomplish your political objective. If this is the case, I would classify you as far-left and it explains your support for Obama.

        • Posted By: marksgershenson @ 06/21/2008 1:58:19 PM

What president did not have OJT? The surge my friend is a bandaide, not the cure. Politically still in turmoil, Iraq is a quagmire, whether you like it or not. I am a Vietnam Vet, very proud of my country, and until the politicians get there act together in Iraq, and can say suicide bombings have stopped, which they have not, then start the lecture about the far-left....plus what a heavy price military families have paid for their brave soldiers going time and time again....

LEFT THIS, LEFT THAT-WHAT HAS THE RIGHT DONE? AFTER 2001 YOU HAD A THE CONGRESS, WHITEHOUSE AND EVEN A RIGHT LEANING SUPREME COURT-WHAT HAPPENED?

      1. WE INVADED A COUNTRY FOR NO REASON. COSTING US 4000+ AMERICAN LIVES-HALF UNDER THE AGE OF 24-AND COSTING US 5 BILLION DOLLARS A WEEK.

      2. THE CRIMINAL MISHANDLING OF HURRICANE KATRINA. A WEEK TO GET DOWN THERE BUT 2 DAYS TO GET TO THE TSUNAMI? HEEELLLO-NEW ORLEANS IS A STATE WHICH MEANS THEY PAY TAXES

      3. TAX BREAK FOR THE RICH -DURING WAR TIME -FIRST TIME IN AMERICAN HISTORY

      4. $4.00 A GALLON GAS AND DEISEL. YOU THINK IT'S JUST A COINCIDENCE WE HAVE TWO OIL WHORES IN THE WHITEHOUSE AND THIS IS HAPPENING? AND WHAT'S THEIR ANSWER-DRILLING! ANYTHNG TO PUT MORE MONEY IN THE HANDS OF THEIR ALREADY RICH FRIENDS. MIND YOU IT'S NOT A SUPPLY AND DEMAND ISSUE BECAUSE WE HAVE ENOUGH OIL FOR 2 DECADES PLUS, MIND YOU IT'S THE OIL EXECS AND THE SPECULATORS WHO HAVE THE PRICE HIGH(CAME ABOUT BECAUSE OF THE GOP TRYING TO HELP ENRON), MIND YOU IT WOULD KILL CALIFORNIA'S AND FLORIDA'S TOURISM AND THAT'S WHY GOV. SCHWARTZENEGGER OPPOSES IT, MIND YOU IF WE DRILLED TOMMOROW YOU WOULDN'T SEE A FINANCIAL AFFECT FOR 8-10 YEARS-IF THE OIL EXECS AND SPECULATORS LET THE PRICE DOWN.

      5. CHENEY MAKING HIMSELF INTO ANOTHER BRANCH OF GOVERNMENT

GOOD TIMES HUH? PEOPLE AREN'T BEING FOOLED ANYMORE AND THAT'S WHY OBAMA IS BEATING THE PANTS OF MCCAIN-BRING UP WRIGHT ( A MAN WHO VOULUNTEERED FOR VIETNAM AND SYRIA, WHO PUT HIMSELF THROUGH SCHOOL FOR 2 MASTER DEGREES AND A DOCORATE WHICH IS MORE THAN ANYONE ON THIS BOARD HAS DONE)-THEN I BRING UP HAGEE AND PARSELY WHO MCCAIN SOUGHT THEM "AFTER" THERE WORDS. YOU THINK WRIGHT SPOKE LIKE THAT EVERY SUNDAY? DO YOU THINK OBAMA WAS THERE EVERY SUNDAY? OBVIOUSLY NOT BECAUSE HE'S NOT AT CHURCH ON AAAAAAANNNNY OF THOSE CLIPS. BESIDES-IT CAN'T BE WORSE THAN MCCAIN BEING FRIENDS WITH G. GORDON LIDDY OR BUSH SR. HAVING EAZY-E AT THE WHITEHOUSE FOR DINNER-YOU KNOW EAZY E? INVENTOR OF GANGSTER RAP, EX DRUG LORD, EX GANGBANGER, EX PIMP WHO HAD 9 KIDS BY 8 WOMEN AND DIED OF FULL BLOWN AIDS?

Likely the "polling" was done inside Newsweek's office!

  • Posted By: obamathecommie.com @ 06/21/2008 1:21:46 PM

    THIS POLL IS A FARCE!!!!
    38% Registered Democrats
    37% Registered Independents
23% Registered Republicans ------ if you do the math, it is a statistical dead heat if # of Dems and Reps =

    • Posted By: edhere @ 06/21/2008 2:35:59 PM

It's not a farce at all. You have uncovered an interesting fact though. There are way more Americans who identify themselves as Democrats these days than as Republicans. Note that "results are weighted so that the sample demographics match Census Current Population Survey parameters for gender, age, education, race, region, and population density." That means that the breakdown you've noted of party affiliation is representative of the country today (plus or minus 3.8%).

If it's still true that pollsters only call land lines, ignoring the millions of young voters who just have cell lines, then I suspect this lead is a conservative estimate.

And to all you people who claim to have done workplace polls showing McCain ahead:
How were they able to be reached down in those coal mines in West Virginia?

What did Hillary, and what do Bush and McCain all have in common (besides hating Obama)?: "bomb, bomb, bomb Iran." Perpetually at war (Iraq, Afghanistan, pakistan, Iran - hell, the entire Middle East), what do you think the effect wil be on our fuel prices then. on Middle Eastern muslim sentiment towards Americans fiercely supporting their big oil investment even more so than they do Israel?? You think they'll just lie down and roll over, or send more of their women AND children into this country (and against our U.S. soldiers over there) as suicide bombers? Think, people, think. We MUST end oil-based war, defend our borders against illegal immigrants and terrorists, and invest in alternative fuel sources NOW.

Michael Masters of Master Capital Management, LLC (a global investment management company) testified before the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs just a couple of weeks ago. Here are quotes from his testimony:

"Today, Index Speculators are pouring billions of dollars into the commodities futures markets, speculating that commodity prices will increase. In the popular press the explanation given for rising oil prices is the increased demand from China. According to the DOE, China's demand for petroleum has increasde in the last five years from 1.88 billion barrels to 2.8 billion barrels, an increase of 920 billion barrels. Over the same five year period, Index Speculators' demand for petroleum futures has increased by 848 million barrels. THE INCREASE IN DEMAND FROM INDEX SPECULATORS IS ALMOST EQUAL TO THE INCREASE IN DEMAND FROM CHINA. Index Speculators have now stockpiled, via the futures market, the equivalent of 1.1 billion barrels of petroleum, effectively adding EIGHT TIMES as much oil to their own stockpile as the US Government has added to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve over the last five years."

"The Senate has asked the question "Are Institutional Investors contributing to food and energy price inflation?" And my unequivocal answer is "YES." In this testimony I will explain that investment banks are one of, if not the primary, factors affecting commodities prices today. Clearly, there are many factors that contribute to price determination in the commodities markets; I am here to expose a fast-growing yet virtually unnoticed factor, and one that presents a problem that can be expediently corrected through legislative policy action..."

The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission is ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL. They are supposed to be protecting us form these kinds of abuses, but Bush has allowed loopholes in the CFTC regulations that you can drive a truck through. An oil truck, that is.

Barack Obama is the far-left in the Senate, His pastor and spiritual mentor for 20 years was a far-left hatemonger who capitalizes on stirring up racial hatred on the southside of Chicago. He belonged to a church that pledges to a black value system (imagine if McCain belonged to a church that pledged to a white value system). His friend is a far-left unrepentant terrorist. His wife believes that Barack could get shot at a gas station by white racists (even though he is far more likely to get victimized by blacks on the southside of Chicago). She believes this country is mean (maybe she believes she didn't get enough hand-ups with affirmative action). Only now, when her husband is on the threshold of becoming President, is she proud of her country.

If this guy was a white conservative, he would get pummeled by the liberal media with this many strikes against him.

    • Posted By: marksgershenson @ 06/21/2008 1:52:22 PM

    • Posted By: summer1216 @ 06/21/2008 12:52:07 PM

He is going to be your President. He has many fine qualities that you are overlooking. You're going to have to make your peace with that, so maybe you could spend a little time finding out the rest of the information about Barak Obama. There are lots of ways to do that, but a good place to start would be to read his book, which is a masterpiece of patriotism, compassion, and clear-eyed observation of the state of things in America today. No one is all bad, and you can work with what is good about him.

You must be new here. If so, you gotta a whole lot of catching up to do. Spend a few hours reading all the blog entries and you will know exactly why the majority of Americans fear a BO presidency. The good news, it's not gonna happen.

The masses are too politically savvy and in-tune with what's going on in today's world to allow Kid Fox to slip into the W.H. Do a little reading and let me know what you think. Good luck!

Bush is the one protecting Osama Bin Laden - he's friends with his family, DUH...

Osama Bin Laden is a construct of the CIA - real person - who Bush protects because it all served a purpose - to go to war against Iraq and tie the 9/11 attack with Saddam Hussein, his daddy's old nemesis.

We went to war in Iraq for the oil, but the capture of Saddam was icing on the cake... Now Jr. is trying to capture Osama Bin Laden so he can have some positive legacy after he leaves the White House. He's a moron, a traitor and allowed 9/11 to happen - he and his party were too busy cheating in Florida and before that, impeaching Clinton for his titillating sex scandal than they could be bothered to actually safeguard the country.

Bush and Cheney should be tried for war crimes for the torture of innocent prisoners. They are despicable. Cheney is Dr. Strangelove.
