Ms. Samuels where are the statistics to support your statement? Your article reeks of irresponsible journalism. The hand full of Black women who stood outside the court buildings with signs and words of support for R. Kelly and the rambling posts of Black women on blogs and gossip sites are not respresentative of Black women in general. I can assure you that the majority of Black women (myself included) do not support R. Kelly . Please stop perpetuating the myth "so many" Black women are ignorant and uneducated. If you're going to speak for or about a group of people don't assume their thoughts and beliefs rather do the proper research.

    TYPICAL NEGRESSES.
THIS IS THE REASON WHY THE BLACKS SHOULD BE STERILIZED AND RESETTLED, PROBABLY IN ANTARCTICA

Blacks stereotype Caucasians every day of the week, in print, in movies, in their casual conversation and have no problem with that. Why 'did' Black women back this dude? We still have no idea. In my opinion, this was the best little acquittal money can buy. I wonder if he had to pay a 'convenience tax' on the money to his lawyers.

Why is it acceptable to portray Black people as a monolithic and irrational group? Please do not presume my mindset or opinions based on the color of my skin and my gender -- its called stereotyping.

Your article, without statistical analysis, proposes to expose the mindset of black women like me. Apparently, en masse, we have low self esteem, support pedophiles and suspend rationality in matters relating to criminal justice.

Thanks for reminding that our journey towards rational, fair-minded public discourse still has a long way to go. What could even be your justification? Perhaps that a black woman wrote the article? There are people of every color who will write sensationalistic and stupid things for headlines.

No, no, no. Not all black women stand by R. Kelly. I do not support this pedophile. He is a pedophile that has a solid record of raping teenage girls. I do not support him, and have not supported him since the tape first surfaced. His music is not welcomed in my home. I think he should start praying that the next victim's father is not willing to take a pay off and that his aim is off.

"How could a woman not support the punishment of someone who hurt another woman? I just can't understand it." The same could be said for OJ Simpson, who, as I recall, had quite the same reaction post-verdict. I am a black woman who does not support R. Kelly (or OJ for that matter), and I abhor the idea "we" are consistently viewed in the media as a one-minded entity. Believe it or not, some of us actually think fo rourselves.

Justice is blind, but sadly most people are not when it comes to making forgone conclusions. Some will see him as innocent, a supposed victim trying to get rich off a celebrity. Others meanwhile will make assumptions he's guilty, afterall most of his songs are about sex. I don't know whether he is guilty or not, but I do know while many scream about the injustice of women in the Middle East, it's sad to say African-American women here in America who are too often,(not always), potrayed as sex objects rather than human beings. R Kelly, 50 Cent, Nelly, you name the rapper or singer and they have a video of half naked African-American women dancing as objects of lust rather than being examples to young African-American women. This is a serious problem here in America, and people need to rise up to be an example to our children of the future.

Put it like this...if Justin Timberlake were accused of some heinous crime, you can bet that there will still be a few dozen adoring girls outside lending their support...mainly because they were in love with the guy's celebrity before the scandal. Plus he was acquitted so the charges couldn't have been all that certain, so why does the guy not deserve to have a few fans on his side? Is there some unspoken rule that if a celebrity is ACCUSED of a crime that the 100% of the general public should presume them guilty? I personally think he was guilty as sin, but is it a shocker that a couple dozen people were actually on his side and showed up at the courthouse?

Because no matter what famous people do, there will always be some die-hard fans there to support them lol. But, as a black guy myself, the general sentiment i perceived among black women was that they wanted this guy to go down. He's not a very popular guy for several other reasons

This comment is meant for the author of the R. Kelly article titled. WHY DO BLACK WOMEN SUPPORRT R. KELLY. The article was just removed from the website. Shame on Newsweek ,for allowing an intern of ignorance to post inflammatory headlines under their banner.
Newsweek??????for a prestigious magazine you should know better??????the title of your article reeks of stereotypes which suggest to me the author is ignorant. You need to revise the title and apologize or as a black woman I???ll sue you for libel, defamation, pain and suffering and anything else I can research. Can you prove I supported R. Kelly? How dare you stoop so low in this time and age when you should be better informed? SHAME ON YOU. Stick to writing stuff you know something about, you just insulted a whole race of women. Why do white people support David Duke and the KKK? Does that sound nice or accurate? And just for the record I don???t support him. He should have placed in a cell with Leroy, big Mo and the author of this article.

White rock n roll stars have been sleeping with white teenage groupies forever and they still enjoy the support of white women. Where is M. Spencer Green's commentary about this unique phenomenon.

I have not seen the tape and do not care to, however if R. Kelly committed a crime he should be punished. Yes there are so many balck men who are in jail for crimes they did not commit or for longer periods for a similar crime committed by a white person. If we are to believe that R. Kelly is really guilty, then the parents of the daughter must also be charged for the criminal conduct. the parents should know where their children are and who they are with. Allowing your very maturing underage daughter hang out with any adults (males) should be punishable by the parents. My questions to the balck community: Mother where are your daughter and father where are your sons? We are so hooked up in the hustle and bustle of societal fame that we forget that we have children who are out exploring what they see on TV and hear on the basketball court. I monitored my kids, on who they played, hung out with and even in the school. We are so debt ridden that children are at home to raise themselve and amke it on their own. Daughter is the video if you are underage, my heart really goes out to you, but parents you are to held responsible. TW (Georgia)

Your title on the front page was very misleading. It should have been "some" black women from the start. This is why people hate the press and I use that worde loosely. UNFORTUNATELY, there are some black women who support this pedofile. The vast majority of us do not. Some whites think O.J. didn't do it. So stop trying to create a pathology in the black community that the white community has in greater numbers. R. Kelly willget his come uppance one day. He's got a daughter, too. He's a jerk.

i am a black woman, and i do NOT love or support R. Kelly. i think it is disgusting to think that he will continue to be able to victimize young black girls. i believe that if the young girls were white he would not have been on bail doing concerts and recording albums for the past few years.

i am disgusted by your article. i know NO ONE among my Black female friends who "love" or "support" this pedophile.

yes, his music is good, but the idea of what he has done to young girls' bodies and souls and minds sours the experience of his music for me and a lot of black people i know.

therefore, i have not bought any of his albums in YEARS.

finally, i am disgusted by the perception that this article and its headline suggest, as if Black people are somehow so morally bankrupt, outside the norm or otherwise "disenfranchised" that we can't tell when one of our precious girls has been abused and exploited.

this is one of the most irresponsible, divisive and RIDICULOUS articles i have seen in my adult life, and i say this in the wake of the Clinton-Obama primary.

To beat the "white man's system' seems to be the overriding factor in these peoples' mindsets, just like in O.J.'s situation. Guilt has very little to do with anything. Statutory rape laws should extend to all races irregardless of "cultural" issues. For the defendant and the 'victim' to refuse to testify is more telling than their testimony. It would be interesting to see how much money changed hands under the table among parties involved in this trial. How convenient that Mr. Kelly had such a big selling new album during the conclusion of this I am totally convinced that many people are utter fools that follow and support come celibrities no matter what they might do . I won't be a bit surprised if a large civil lawsuit between him and the 'victim' pops up soon ala O.J. in the near future. Money, that's where the crime is.

I am a black female with high self esteem and no I didn't rally for R. Kelly. I don't put anything pass anyone regardless of race or stature. if you commit a crime, then you must be held accountable. I felt bad for the underage child to the point where I felt her parents should have been in the next courtroom. But if for some reason the defense lawyer pleaded a better case and the accused is found NOT GUILTY, then he will have to answer to a higher power. It didn't matter to me that the accused was R.Kelly - and yes, I am a big fan - there was too much circumstantial evidence that was presented. I am not ashamed to be black nor am I ashamed to stand up for my beliefs. If Mr. Kelly knows that he DID commit this act then he will answer for it. There have been many WHITE men/women that have done some heinous crimes and have been found NOT GUILTY. This should come as a wakeup call to everyone...watch your children, take care of your children because there are people out there that will take advantage of them...and it has nothing to with being famous or being popular. We are so quick to judge and ready to condemn. Why not find ways to educate and offer support to our young black females/males...why not hold the parents of these abused children accountable...what is a petition going to do? Ask yourself what can I do to ensure that this never happens to another child...STAND UP AND BE HEARD.

Your "there was too much circumstantial evidence " is the problem with our legal system today. Circumstance is not the same as reality. Too many innocent people are in prison because they could not get fair representation. Allowing a conviction with no real evidence is back to the days of lynchings because a mod "though" someone was to blame.

  • Posted By: Rio4 @ 06/21/2008 2:45:12 AM

Why is it that the press want rabid hang'em high verdicts whether there is that "reasonable doubt" Just because they are accused? J'Accuse went out centuries ago. Or is it the fear of the Politically Correct whe emasculate males?
Is it the He (R.Kelly is popular with the ladies? Is it jealousy?
