This is a great article!! Cindy McCain seems like a very nice woman. She has alot of money and still has had problems in her life but has gotten past difficult times. I think she would be a great First Lady.

I've enjoyed a few laughs at her expense, but I think you're right. Kind of a Nancy Reagan/Jackie Kennedy/ type. Ritzy and Intellegent.
cindy mccain should be in jail. she forged prescriptions and stole from the charity she was running to get pain pills. any normal citizen would have been jailed for a pretty long time had they done what she did. of course when you are a senator's wife you are judged by a different set of laws. i don't see how johnny boy can rail against drugs, supporting long prison sentences for nonviolent drug offenders with a wife that is an addict and thief. i'm sure there are many people in jail for drug offenses that never stole or forged things to support their habit. i don't see how much more of a hypocrite you can be.
I'm glad you're so perfect. Cindy McCain was disgraced and did pay a price. She had more than made up for this victimless crime through other works. Remember, Barack also used drugs - he just didn't get caught. I'm not dissing either of them. If drugs were legalized and regulated, like alcohol, we wouldn't even be discussing this type of garbage.
Huge difference!! He DIDN'T get caught, but he divulged the info to his readers out of honesty and journalistic integrity. Cindy only went public w/ the charges when she was forced to.
Kboogie - Let's be honest. Obama disclosed his drug use for two reasons - 1. the statute of limitations had passed and he could no longer be prosecuted; and 2. it's always better and smarter to get this stuff out in the open and frame the issue rather than having one of your old college roommates appearing on the news. Once again, I see nothing wrong with what he did - but his use is no better or worse than Cindy McCain.
I'm not judging the "use" of the drug, either. But, there's NO way his disclosure can be viewed on the same level of integrity as hers. Absolutely, NO way. First of all, he was never addicted. Second, he never defrauded anyone to obtain them. Gimme a break!!!
As for fearing a scandal.....if Obama chose to keep his experimental use a secret only to be mired in scandal, later, the accusation would be treated as exactly that...a scandal. And based on his numbers, scandals don't seem to bother him. The point is Cindy (w/ the political aid of her husband) covered it up as long as possible until they caught wind that a rogue reporter was going public w/ the story.
Obama risked his political career, and chose honesty. Regardless of how you spin it, there's no comparison.
http://www.peele.net/lib/mccain.html - McCain Has Two Standards on Drug Abuse
Kboogie - take off the blinders. Addiction is an illness, it should not be a crime. He's fortunate that his use of drugs didn't result in addiction. And, he's also fortunate that he was never caught buying drugs from a drug dealer. Having a record would make running for President a lot more difficult.
I'm just curious, do you see any flaws in Obama? You just seem so over the top for him that it comes across like brainwashing.
As an aside, I think he probably will win in November but it's a long way off. Right now, except for us political "junkies", a lot of the population has yet to really tune in. Also, there are many outside events that can totally change these polls.
Dreffin , most drug users resort to criminal activity to support their very expensive drug habits. Can't just surgically separate the two so easily as you would like us to believe.
Lori - if marijuana use was legalized and regulated, users would no longer have to resort to criminal activity - should be handled in the same manner as alcohol with the same restrictions.
yeah like Bill Clinton told us all he didn't inhale. I guess when he figured we'd all bought that one he's be able to tell us he didn't have sexual relations with that women. Personally, I never believed either one. I knew we were inaugurating a big fat LIAR. And that is exactly what we got. He got a big fat PERJURY conviction. I think we got the crappier end of the deal still.
Huh?
The differences are that 1. Obama used in college over 20 years ago a little wee and tried a little coke, most of us have tried drugs during college. 2. Also he DID NOT steal money from anyone to buy them. Major differences in these two scenarios.
sjpersonal - totally disagree. Drug use = drug use. I'm not against it but just think it's hypocritcal to measure one vs. the other. In neither case is it relevant.
P.S. Quit while you're behind. Obama is running for Pres, not Cindy McCain.
dreffin, i never said i was perfect. but if i, or anyone else who has posted on this message board, were in the same situation, i GUARANTEE you that person would be in jail. why should she enjoy a get out of jail free card when the rest of us wouldn't? Because she does great things for charity (after she stole from then of course) ? Because shes mccain's wife? Because she's a multi-million dollar trust fund baby? and while i agree that drug use = drug use, and that it should be legalized and regulated, cindy mccain committed multiple felonies. she should be in jail.
ceanf9 - her drug use was in 1989 (I can't believe I'm defending the McCains). Betty Ford became addicted to prescription drugs, JFK, etc. Betty Ford is one of the greatest first ladies ever. JFK could have been, given time, one of the best Presidents ever. I'm not condoning it but just saying it happens. Addiction is an illness - it should not be a crime. If Cindy was an alcoholic, there would be no issue but the addiction would be just as real. I just think there are many more important issues to discuss.
Dreffin wrote "Betty Ford was addicted to prescription drugs,JFK, etc"
Wow Dreffin I never knew that Betty was addicted to JFK, i was around during that time and I totally missed that. Or could it be you've been smoking too much pot before you wrote your post?
Dreffein, you cracked me up about saying you cant believe you were defending the McCains. LOL. But I do respect your point made.
Sharenews - yeah - I haven't defended a Republican in 20 years.
Yes Cindy McCain isn't running for president, but the article is about her and the discussion IS about Her drug use, YOU brought Obama into the topic so YOU should expect responses! Again, Cindy McCain was a drug addicted rich woman who stole money from her charity to fund her habit. Also I believe that she had children at that time. This makes it even worse!
Obama tried weed and coke in COLLEGE and DID NOT steal from anyone
sjpersonal - like I said, I just think everyone is overreacting to Cindy McCain's drug addiction. It was 20 years ago. I think if folks pounce on Cindy for her use, they need to recognize the hypocrisy in not setting the same standard for Obama. I don't have an issue with either one with their former drug use and it would not be a factor in my decision making (nor do I think others should raise it).
Fair enough
Dreffin,See my post above and tell me which people you would like to see doing their jobs while stoned.
Another big difference is that Obama experimented with drugs briefly during college as part of his adolescent rebellious phase. He never was addicted, and quickly realized that taking drugs was self destructive and stupid. Cindy was a 40 something mother of five when she got hooked.
Dear Cean, I have to disagree with what you have said about Cindy McCain would have gone to jail for stealing drugs if she had been an average person instead of a rich girl wife of a politician. Actually, first time drug offenders who buy or steal drugs to feed their addiction usually are given rehab and community service, rather than jail time. First time drug DEALERS usually go to jail.
You can object to Cindy for her drug addiction (and I do) but I think it would be unfair to say that she was let off easy. The only aspect of her sentence that was lenient was the fact that it was kept secret. Somehow, the press did not know about it, her records were sealed, which was NOT appropriate for an adult offender. The only reason we know about it is because on of the workers at the non-profit blew the whistle and told the media about her problems.
The wife of a candidate should not serve as attack bait during a campaign but such is politics today. I don't know if Cindy McCain will be hounded as much by the Democrats as the Republicans will certainly hound Michelle Obama. I do know neither wife will be able to avoid the slime that passes for political discourse these days. They won't deserve it, but if even a few voters might be persuaded to vote against McCain or Obama because of it , it will happen. We should all be proud of the free and equal election process we have created that allows spouses to be attacked with the same malicious energy as the candidates. Open season on the women, let the campaign begin!
the first spouse is part of the package and deserves some scrutiny.
Flori it's understandable that it's over your head
"When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying the cross." - Sinclair Lewis
The Repugnant Party has arrived and it is wrapped in the flag and it is carrying the cross
And It Is A Cross I Do Not Wish To Bear And I Wish For Them To Quit Desecrating My Beloved Flag And Country
1.) Powerful and Continuing Nationalism: Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.
2.) Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights: Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.
3.) Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause: The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial, ethnic or religious minorities; liberals: communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.
4.) Supremacy of the Military: Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.
5.) Rampant Sexism: The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Opposition to abortion is high, as is homophobia and anti-gay legislation and national policy.
6.) Controlled Mass Media: Sometimes the media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.
7.) Obsession with National Security: Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses
8.) Religion and Government are Intertwined: Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.
Continued Below:
Continued from above:
9.) Corporate Power is Protected: The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.
10.) Labor Power is Suppressed: Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.
11.) Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts: Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts is openly attacked, and governments often refuse to fund the arts.
12.) Obsession with Crime and Punishment: Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations
13.) Rampant Cronyism and Corruption: Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.
14.) Fraudulent Elections: Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

NY Daily News revealed that some of the 66 lobbyists driving the Double Talk Express have made close to a million dollars lobbying for a notorious predatory lender, Ameriquest, which lured people into unsustainable mortgages. McCain doesn't blame Ameriquest or his lobbyist pals-- one his chief liaison to Congress (John Green) and the other is his national finance co-chairman (Wayne Berman). Instead he blames the victims, calling them irresponsible and trying to paint them as somehow morally deficient and undeserving of society's help as they lose their homes. Of course, McCain himself has voted for every single piece of legislation that has wrecked a regulatory system that could have and should have prevented the business practices that led to this-- and those votes are paying off big time as scores of lobbyists he has helped flock to his campaign.
When Sen. John McCain addressed the nation's burgeoning mortgage mess last week, he insisted it was time for a little "straight talk."
"I will not play election-year politics with the housing crisis," the GOP presidential hopeful insisted while unveiling his plan, which many have since described as friendlier to the mortgage industry than the Democrats' proposals.
What McCain did not say-- which some believe smacks of politics-- is that two of his top advisers were recently lobbyists for a notorious lender in the mortgage meltdown.
McCain's lobbyist brigade were paid hundreds of thousands of dollars before Ameriquest went belly-up-- but not before thousands and thousands of their victims lost their homes. The company was forced to settle suits in 49 states and pay $325 million in liabilities. "They would be defined as the most blatant and aggressive predatory lenders out of everybody," said Bruce Marks, head of the nonprofit Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America.
McCain claims he kept Green and Berman out of the process when he decided to come down on the side of the predatory lenders and against the consumers and, in truth, that's the way his voting record shows he's always been. One of his p.r hacks, Tucker Bonds, blatantly lied to a press ever eager to believe every word: "Sen. McCain has never done anything that would violate the public trust and he has never done favors for special interests or lobbyists." I guess no one remembers McCain's close relationship with crooked Arizona banker Charles Keating, who admits he got what he expected from McCain for showering him with tens of thousands of dollars in expensive gifts and services-- while ripping off millions of dollars for Savings and Loans depositors.
Johnnie Midnight is at it again
Several of Congress' most prominent Jewish members are set to go after John McCain on an issue of perceived strength: his proclaimed "toughness" in dealing with Iran.
On Thursday, Sens. Frank Lautenberg and Ben Cardin, alongside more than half-a-dozen members of the House of Representatives and the National Jewish Democratic Council, will host a press conference highlighting a vote McCain made that helped corporations like Halliburton continue doing business with sanctioned countries like Iran.
The vote, McCain's critics argue, demonstrates a strand of political hypocrisy -- on the campaign trail, the Senator has repeatedly called for divestment from Iran -- and pokes holes in his attacks on Barack Obama.
"John McCain has been arguing that he is Mr. Tough Guy on Iran," said Ira Forman, Executive Director of the NJDC. "At the AIPAC conference he talked about how he would introduce stronger sanctions and boycott measures. He's also saying Obama is naïve and can't be trusted to deal with the Iranians. But when it came to deciding to be tough on Iran or supporting Halliburton, he stuck with Halliburton. It is easy to talk the talk but it is not so easy to walk the walk."
In July 2005, Sen. Lautenberg introduced an amendment to the Defense Authorization bill that would have closed a loophole allowing U.S. corporations to do business with terrorist-sponsoring nations by setting up foreign shell companies. The measure had broad support as it became evident that several major companies, including Halliburton, had taken advantage of the system. Frank Gaffney, the neoconservative columnist, opined that the situation was an "affront to the letter and spirit of the law."
But when the provision came to the floor, the vote split almost entirely down party line. Only two GOP Senators supported the amendment and neither had the last name McCain.
McCain's defeat will be so sweet
Dear Driver, could you please post links to this information. I would love to know more.
Thanks for all of your good work.
This article makes me think that Cindy would not make a good First Lady....too many problems with public life and personal issues. It doesn't make me feel all "warm and fuzzy" about John either. He isn't even as likable as Bush and that's saying alot.
Cindy McCain took her Smile on the road recently. Her "Smiles" tour went to Vietnam where she was warmly welcomed. What would one expect? McCains stock has risen there since he announced that no MIA's existed. No Vietnam vet could agree with that statement. No Real vietnam Vet that is. Phonies please refrain from commenting.
Senator Obama just took another giant step toward winning the presidency. Actually, someone who considers himself a sworn enemy of Senator Obama took the step for him. Dr. Dobson of the Focus On the Family radio program (and evangelical media empire) has aired a program in which he attacks Senator Obama, the Senator's theology and his credentials as a Christian. With enemies like this Senator Obama doesn't need friends.
No, I'm not talking about Dobson energizing liberal Democrats. I'm talking about Dobson energizing his fellow evangelicals to vote for Senator Obama.
If you're one of many Americans who thinks that the war in Iraq was a mistake or believe that the Republicans have run the economy into the ground or think that perhaps the chaos George Bush unleashed in our foreign affairs has something to do with the price of gas at the pump... then you have Dr. Dobson to thank -- personally. No one worked harder to get Bush elected then reelected. Dobson delivered his millions of dupes. But now many of them see through him and like most Americans, are appalled by Bush.
The new generation of evangelicals is sick of being labeled as backward rednecks because of their association with fossils like Dobson. There are many evangelicals like Cizik too who are not all about homophobia, nationalism, war-without-end and American exceptionalism or the Republican Party. Like Cizik they believe that the America has a responsibility to do something about global warming, poverty, AIDS, human trafficking and other issues. They see through Dobson and the other so-called pro-life leaders, who have actually done nothing to reduce abortion. In fact Dobson has increased abortions because of his "abstinence only" crusade.
As a result of his power grabs and bullying of other evangelicals, not to mention his telling people how to vote and pointing them to the failed W, Dobson & Co. have zero credibility with a growing number of otherwise conservative evangelicals who happen--this year--to be looking favorably at Senator Obama's holistic Christian-based world view. Unlike Dobson they like Obama's theology just fine.
All that was missing to put the frosting on the Obama cake was for Dobson to attack him. For Obama to win all he needs to do is peel off a chunk of heretofore solid evangelical Republican votes. Dobson just handed Obama those votes.
NOW, THIS IS INTERESTING....................
According to RealClearPolitics, Obama is leading by 7pts in the National Poll, 70pts in the Electoral College, and leading in 5 out of the 7 "battleground" states".
RasmussenPoll is holding steady w/ Obama leading by 5pts. The Rasmussen Reports Balance of Power Calculator shows Obama leading in states with 200 Electoral College votes while McCain leads in states with 174 votes. When leaners are included, it's Obama 284, McCain 240.
The Gallup Poll is showing a national tie. But what's interesting is that Obama is no longer showing weakness w/ Catholics, Jews, or Hispanics:
"Among major U.S. religious groups, Catholic voters are most closely divided in their presidential voting preferences, with Barack Obama holding a narrow 47% to 43% advantage over John McCain. McCain leads Obama among Protestants (48% to 41%) and Mormons (70% to 23%) while Obama holds the upper hand among Jewish voters (62% to 29%) and those with no religious affiliation (65% to 25%)."
"Catholics have traditionally been a key swing-voter group, and the 2008 election is proving to be no exception. Obama's appeal to minority voters -- including Hispanics -- helps to push him ahead of McCain among Catholics. In these data, roughly one in seven Catholic registered voters report being of Hispanic ethnicity, and they prefer Obama by a 66% to 25% margin."
Whether you count the Newsweek, LA TIMES, or Bloomburg Polls, (or not), the end result remains the same - If the election were today, McCain would be TOAST!!!!!
Actually, Obama has been the front-runner since he defeated HRC, officially.
Almost forgot.............OH HAPPY DAYS!!!!!!!!!
After reading some of these comments on here I have to tell you that a lot of you are disgusting. What the heck do her looks or her facelifts or any of that crap have to do with the kind of person she is? She is using her life to do good works and she sure doesn't have to.
What the heck are any of you jackdonkeys doing to help out deformed children? Yes, that's what I thought.
Go crawl back under your rocks.
LuLuBelle you obviously forgot the MANY disgusting, racist, derogatory remarks YOU have made about Michelle Obama all over the blogs, the most riduculous one about the fist bump in which you called her low life trash who had no business talking to dignitaries, to which I posted a link showind papa Bush fist bumping a tennis player. YOU need to crawl back under YOUR rock. A person with character DOES NOT have a year long affair with a married man, nor lies and steals to support her drug habit.
Perfect reply.
As a 25 year Navy wife I was bemused to say the least, that Ms McCain rationalizes her utter failure to adapt to any life besides her ultra-plush heiress's existence, and her own choice to live apart from her husband as being just like a wife whose husband is on deployment. I am sure that my mother, who was also married to a career navy sailor, would also find little in common with Mrs McCain. Neither would John McCain's first wife, who was indeed married to a man in the Navy. I'd like to see Mrs McCain actually live my life instead of appropriating it because it sounds noble. Well, her rationalization is just another example of the lies she has told --starting from the day she first met her (then married) husband to be. Typical for this couple.
I disagree with the McCains on policy, but they are people with good intentions. The only problem I have with Cindy McCain is that thing she said about Michelle. Also, I can't believe what Bush and his cronies did to them. That is truly evil. I hope to see (and expect to) see the Obama campaign behave much, much better. That said, I really think Obama should be the next president. He clearly beats the McCains on every policy issue I can think of.
Federal law makes even possession of soft drugs such as cannabis illegal, though some local governments have laws contradicting federal laws. Federal law overrules state/local law, always, in all situations.
Well except in some cases.
Federal drug laws specify minimum and maximum terms of imprisonment, based on the type and quantity of drug involved. Likewise, under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, these factors are taken into account.
While judges have discretion to depart from guidelines, they must still stay within the mandatory minimum and maximum terms specified by statute.ur case.
In Arizona although most judges follow drug-sentencing guidelines, they do consider mitigating circumstances when imposing penalties but minimum sentences guidelines are required to be followed by Federal Law
Well except in some cases
So after several miscarriages, she became pregnant in early 1984, and her doctor ordered her to stay off her feet and not to travel. In what month did she go on that diving trip to Micronesia?
If the bambino looks like George Loony, I swear it's not mine! I was in 'Nam in '84. Oh wait! Or was it WWII? Gee, I'm having one of my McOld Dude blackouts again, sorry.
Oh Happy Days!!!!!!!!!!
Obama leading in ALL polls, including Electoral College Map...............Gallup, Rasmussen, AP, Newsweek, LA Times........
Oh, nevermind..............you get the point...... LMAO!!!!!
Gallup has Barry up by 3 with a margin of error at 3....Oops!! LMAO!!
I mentioned 5 polls, plus the Electoral Map. Is this all you got?!?! Oh, Rocky.....LMAO!!!!
I seem to remember someone telling me that Gallup was the most accurate.....(_!_)
Yes, I would put more stock in Gallup b/c they have a larger subject group. That doesn't discredit the other sources, OR, the Electoral Map that McCain supporters used to be so fond of. I wonder why they don't reference that anymore.....hmmmmmmmmm.......LOL!!!!!!
Sappy days are here again .... blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah ... sappy days are here again!
Instead of debating which pollsters are more accurate, why not review their performances so far. All of the polls are still on real clear. Real Clear shows every poll by every pollster.
Rassmussen is by far the worst one. When ever Obama is showing well, Rassmussen comes to the rescue. so obvious, even to mouth-breathing 23%ers that represent the outdated right wing of the GOP. With the O for OLD being the operative word.
That was a bizarre article to say the least. Let me get this straight, John McCain was obviously attracted to very pretty younger women, he first married a fashion model, left her when she had serious accident injuries, starting dating Cindy while he was still married, she' almost 20 years younger than he and he lied about his age, they live in separate states and live very separate lives, he wasn't there for her in some of her darkest days, she was a prescription drug addict who stole from her own foundation to get meds, and supposedly, though they lived far apart and saw one another infrequently, he was always faithful? Very doubtful. Did he have anything at all to do with raising their children while they lived in separate states? Sounds like a very dysfunctional "marriage" and McCain is a bit of a perve. There is no comparison between the Obama relationship and the McCain relationship. Funny how the press and scathing news programs on television, such as O'Reilly, have nothing to say about this strange McCain marriage and history.
I agree. The McCain's history reminds me of one of those terrible movies on the "LIFETIME" channel.
Cocky husband w/ dark past.....woos mindless heiress....becomes neglected trophy wife....turns to drugs and criminal activities.....parents money aids in cover-up......inspires Presidential bid......yadayadayada.....
Wow! Sounds like an interesting autobiography of BoogieShoes. Lifetime huh? I'll be sure to watch it! hehehe
Autobiography??? Of me??? I don't get it. I didn't know I was running for POTUS......
I guess this one's over my head....
