Cindy McCain became addicted to prescription narcotic drugs. She was an addict while she was raising young children, and during the time that she adopted a child. She was arrested for stealing drugs from a charitable organization. She was put into a diversionary program, that may not have been available to someone of lesser means. If the same story were true about Michele Obama, we would be blasted with coverage on every main stream media outlet 27/7. Why the double standard?

Because it is old, old news, already covered, hashed and rehashed. A "diversionary program" is available to anyone with serious enough intent to recover. Betty Ford, Kitty Dukakis, Rush Limbaugh, JFK, lots and lots of people have had problems/issues with drugs. I am sure she had more than adequate support for her children. I enjoy reading about her public service. I think it is neat that she puts WORDS into ACTION. Many people with her kind of money may just sit home and write checks or "lend" their name. True Recovery often motivates people do roll up their sleeves and commit to something bigger than their own needs. She is to be commended and is a good example. As far as a "double standard", I think it safe to say the Obamas have had a fairly good pass from the press so far, considering.....

Mrs. McCain's drug use and stealing of narcotics from her charity and subsequent arrest, is well documented and is a matter of public record. If Mrs. Obama had the drug history that Mrs. McCain has, it would be the major story day in and day out. Double standard? You bettcha!

Since we are trying to strive towards a hirer standard, I initially didn't approve of smurrayesq's comments. But the comment at the end about the double standard about the coverage is ABSOLUTELY true. It's not so much that what smurrayesq is saying that troubles me. It's how the media would devour the Obama's if the facts were reversed. So I do think it's a very appropriate and fair comment. And, btw, quetzl, all of smurrayesq's facts are true - and documented. Do your homework before you accuse someone else of being wrong.

Cindy McCain became addicted to prescription medications and was arrested for stealing drugs from a charitable orginization. After her arrest, she was placed into a diversionary program. If Michele Obama had a similar history, every media orginization would be covering this 24/7. Why the double standard?

I am thinking Cindy McCain should be running for president.
Michelle can return to Chicago and get paid for pushing diversity.
Has anyone ever seen two people, husband and wife team, with so little service on record, meteorize to the top so quickly with so little to offer? It's the age of celebrity, image, and hype.

How noble of you to recognize that these two potential First Ladies are accomplished in their own right. Too bad the press believed they could caricature and discount the accomplishments of the other First Lady who was ahead of her times while in the White House and was disdained because she stated she was not going to bake cookies all day or just serve tea.

I was a Democrat, now an Independent. I have no interest, frankly in this campaign. However, it does sound as though Cindy McCain has used her resources and her self in a number of worthwhile causes for over 20 years, while raising her children for 20 years by herself in Phoenix. Michelle Obama, on the other hand, has been a corporate lawyer and a "hospital administrator", earning her big salaries, and raising her children "away from Washington" for all of almost 3 years. In all the print on Ms Obama, I have not read of one single cause, other than her jobs, or any public service record, very much like her husband. They are both products of "Me First" and "Mine First" and are driven, seemingly, by personal ambition. "This moment in time" that he speaks of, is a moment for him and his personal aspirations and less a moment to make a difference in the lives of people in this country and in the world. It is, indeed, a fantasyland, complete with a make believe presidential nominee seal that looks ridiculous with him behind it. Please. Is anyone serious about any of this? The more pertinent question in this campaign is "Which one is the best cook?"

There is no comparison C. McCain and M. Obama. McCain has adopted a daughter from Mother Theresa's, helped a child from Vietnam who had a cleft palate..this girl lived with her in Arizona while seeking medical care. McCain has a husband and sons who have placed their lives on the line in honor for their country. M. Obama has had one instance of being proud of America, has shown her bias of white folks in her disertation at Princeton; to date she has done nothing for her country.
