Comment: Using a pill to try and cure or reduce gambling, will not work. That is is not how the mind works. Read the Book "The Heart of Addiction" by Lance Dodes MD. He does a good job of explaining why switching vices from gambling to a pill, is a kin to confusing action with motion.

Speaking from real life recovery experience, in order for a pill to be "effective" in helping troubled gamblers it would have to be measured for it's abilities to: help the gambler to abstain from betting, overcome financial adversities such as debt and poor money management, improve productivity at work, improve relationships with friends and family, improve self-esteem and confidence - after all the gambler is typically buying hope or searching for a way to "feel" like a winner.

Treating a pure addiction (which is different froma substance based addiction), requires a sound understanding of HOW IT IS THAT THE ADDICTIVE PROCESS OF THINKING OCCURS, the psychology of money and personal coaching.

Essentially effective treatment and tools for treatment have to be "ENGINEERED TO COMPETE WITH THE BET!" - Shawn Jordan, 21 Steps to STOP Gambling

Comment: ¨¨From a neurological viewpoint, addictions are the result of the brain chemistry dysfunction that came about as a result of unbalanced excitatory and inhibitory processing in the neurons. Neurons communicate with each other by firing electrical signals which are then translated into chemical signals called neurotransmitters. The neurotransmitter of addiction is dopamine, which is designed to maintain pleasant mood states. When dopamine falls below acceptable levels this causes the individual to experience sensations of 'withdrawal' as it is called in the psychiatric field. Withdrawal charges the addict to find ways to increase dopamine levels perhaps by taking illegal substances to compensate for the shortfall. As the substance wears off a new cycle of withdrawal and addiction begins....¨ taken from the book tangledsynapses, by Ignacio Sanabria, Neuroscience researcher, www.tangledsynapses.com

Comment: Try behavior modification folks. The "Drug therapy" in this nation is out of control. Don't be an idiot. Its not an addiction it's a bad choice.

Comment: Heck! Just take a shot of tap-water before you hit the slots. But seriously, this is like methedone for
heroine, twinkies for ding-dong's or credit card shopping vs. debit card shopping.
But if the pill keeps you from rolling 7's @ the craps tables...................

Comment: People with addictive personalities get "hooked" partly because they are improperly focused. With or without drugs - help them re-focus getting their "high" from something good - like volunteerism.

Comment: Once again, we are looking for the quick fix, the pharmaceutical miracle. It doesn't exist, but it will certainly increase the value of the pharmaceutical company's stock.

We need more research into how to encourage and support long term behavioral change. Currently, the only behavior we are encouraging is inventing more drugs, so we can take more drugs, so we can invent more drugs.

When are we going to learn that tinkering with the brain's chemistry by throwing more chemicals at it is not the answer?
