    The reality is that there are no "consequences" to saying that you'll vote for Barack Obama in June. In November, however, voters have to seriously consider: Who will keep my family safe? Who's got experience? Who's been tested? That's a contest McCain can win and where Obama's message of "change" seems rather irrelevant.

    Political appeals, even if rooted in religious convictions, must be argued on moral grounds rather than as sectarian religious demands--so that the people (citizens), whether religious or not, may have the capacity to hear and respond. Religious convictions must be translated into moral arguments, which must win the political debate if they are to be implemented. Religious people don't get to win just because they are religious. They, like any other citizens, have to convince their fellow citizens that what they propose is best for the common good-- for all of us and not just for the religious.

    Mr. Fineman, I generally enjoy your commentary and find you to be even-handed. Wish I could say the same for Newsweek which doesn't even seem to try to appear impartial anymore. This magazine is generally only worth reading for the laughs (like that silly article a couple days ago that suggested Obama has more experience than McCain). Your article seems to take issue with the opposition's suspicion of the accuracy of Newsweek's polls. Newsweek has only itself to blame. It could be that the poll is entirely accurate but no serious person would take it at face value given the source.

          Boy, that's the truth: every time I read Eleanor Clift, I wonder if she can stop gushing for the political left long enough to write her column. In fact, I usually get half-way through, wonder why I'm bothering reading propaganda, and promise myself not to get sucked into another of her columns. Occasionally I fall for a good headline....

          There's nothing wrong with having an opinion, but if you're going to write for a national publication that is supposedly a news magazine, then try to write news rather than editorial. Even a good editorial makes an effort to fairly consider both sides. Without balance, your opinion isn't well-reasoned, it's just blind prejudice.

            OK you dummys try to follow: Eleanor Clift is an opinion writer (not an everyday writer), her job is to give opinions on the issues of the day. Much like George Will. Yes, she is a liberal, and gives liberal opinions in her pieces. Guess what? Will is a conservative and gives conservative opinions in his pieces, Duh, Homer. It's called trying to offer balanced views. Why is it that conservatives get all upset if their narrow points of view are challenged?

              George Will and Eleanor Clift aren't even on the same intellectual plane. I've read George when he's quite critical of many conservatives. I've yet to read Eleanor be nearly as balanced when analyzing "her own."
              Let's see if YOU can try to follow: there's a difference in being an opinion writer who often sees things from one side, and being an apologist.
              Nobody's upset about Eleanor having an opinion and challenging the Right; she's just so blantantly got her blinders on that you can't hardly stand to listen to her. Rush is just a bad in the other direction. He isn't challenging my point of view; he's just making my point of view look bad by being so lock-step.

          If judges cannot be impartial then our entire constitution should be discarded and we should start over. We count on judges to be impartial. If we are nominating judges for political reasons, than we are not living up to the expectations of our forefathers

      Hey Ed! Who are you to say that those who disagree with you are not "Real Americans"? I don't see any indication that you have sacrificed anything more than maybe a few bucks. My father gave his life for this country and he would roll over in his grave if he knew that America is once again going to run away rather than standing up for what is right and coming out victorious. Is it a coincedence that America started losing wars about the time that the liberal media started showing up on the scene? - I don't think so. McCain, unlike Obama, wants to ensure that we not only don't come out of this situation a bunch of losers, but also wants to leave the Iraqi people safer and more secure than we found them. If no one was ever willing to sacrifice for our freedom, where would we be?

    --amendment2man, maybe you can explain something to me: It seems to me that Democrats (I do not count myself as one, I'm more of an indepedant, but I am voting for Obama) don't keep standing behind their losers. For instance, when Jimmy Carter showed his true colors, I and most others dropped him like a hot rock. Why do many hard-core republicans stand behind the certain Worst President Ever, a man who has made such a historic, hideous mess of his administration, the country and the free world that it will take decades to recover, if ever. Can you explain it to me? I'm not being facetious, I'd really like to understand. Thanks.

      Its all a matter of relativity and dealing with a known quantity. With Bush I know what we have and what to expect. His capabilities in terms of the powers of the president are really not bad. I support staying in Iraq to finish the fight. finish what you start othewise the backlash will be worse than ever. I do believe that the radical muslims hate us and use us for a scapegoat for all their ills real or imagined.

      There is nothing wrong with a tough stand on these matters and i do not feel that the media created negativity is all justified. Iraq shows real progress at this point. Iran is a real threat at this point. terrorists organizations such as hamas and hezbollah continue to try to be the tail that wags the dog. One day they will get their hands on a true WMD and we have to be prepared for it.

      I am not saying that Bush is the greatest or best but it is what I have to work with at this point and the offerings for Nov. are not that sterling at all in my opinion. Mccain is the logical choice for me at this point yet he was not my first choice as he really is not as strong as I would like to see. In contrast to Obama who I see as Inexperienced (#1) not well versed in negotiation and world politics-very weak approach(2) and unbeleivably arrogant in his lack of substance and actual action plan as well as his belief that he is so qualified. Charisma and promises do not make a good leader(see history lessons ie: Hitler as a remote example)

      I agree. I was a democrat all my life but now will be voting for John McCain. I am so sick of the disgusting Obama voters and their name-calling. The more they do it the stronger is my determination to help John McCain get elected. Obama's minions have learned well from their supposed master of "change".     War minded Presidents breed more of the same. Do things the way we want or we'll threaten you, We'll force you to comply. That's been our countries problem for too many years and that's why more and more countries of the world hate us. Even some countries that have been our allies for years are having second thoughts about us. How many more wars do we have to have before our leaders wake up and lead from a strength that comes from an intelligent mind, and not fight first think about the consequences later. Mr. McCain knows war. That's been what everyone says is his crowning achievement. That's the comparison that comes closest to the Bush policies for me. Win at all costs through brute force. I'm a Repuplican that is so very tired of war-war-war. That seems to be my parties theme for way to long. Now my party is looking to put someone in office who is not only another war minded President but also one that has a temper issue. The countries of world know it, our allies know it, and I'm terrified for our future because of it. My husband and I will be voting for Mr. Obama.
