Huh? You're writing a column defending a poll? The poll might earn a little more respect if Newsweek weren't so in the bag for Obama. On your last point about Gallup, which apprently has it even, being off from the average at RCP, and therefore it's also an outlier - actually, without your poll, maybe RCP would be even, like Gallup.

IF OBAMA WINS, I SUSPECT WE'LL SEE ANOTHER CARTER PRESIDENCY, WITH HIGH INTEREST RATES, HIGH TAXES, HIGH INFLATION, AND AN ANTI-BUSINESS ATTITUDE, AND THEN HE'LL COMPLAIN ABOUT THE "MALAISE" IN AMERICA. IT'' BE INTERESTING TO TRACK THE "MISERY INDEX" THAT CARTER PROMOTED TO GET ELECTED, AND THAT BACKFIRED ON HIM 4 YEARS LATER.

    • Posted By: fowlowl @ 06/26/2008 1:22:30 PM

As Lester Maddox said: "Being called a liar by Jimmy Carter is like being called ugly by a frog."

Unfortunately you're probably right. But in case you haven't noticed, we already are drowning in financial hardship and malaise. Any such conditions under an Obama presidency will have been inhereted fro 8-12 years of Republican rule. PS - History shows that the stock market does better under Democratic presidents. So let's see... Republics can't fight wars, can't catch terrorists, and don't know anything about business or economics. So remind us all again... exactly what CAN you people do?!? (Hint; the answer involves a can of gasoline and the Constitution).

Recent polls show Obama getting 96% of the black vote. This is an amazingly high percentage. It's only 4 points lower than he gets in the poll of Newsweek employees.

    NOW, THIS IS INTERESTING....................

According to RealClearPolitics, Obama is leading by 7pts in the National Poll, 70pts in the Electoral College, and leading in 5 out of the 7 "battleground" states".

RasmussenPoll is holding steady w/ Obama leading by 5pts. The Rasmussen Reports Balance of Power Calculator shows Obama leading in states with 200 Electoral College votes while McCain leads in states with 174 votes. When leaners are included, it???s Obama 284, McCain 240.

The Gallup Poll is showing a national tie. But what's interesting is that Obama is no longer showing weakness w/ Catholics, Jews, or Hispanics:

"Among major U.S. religious groups, Catholic voters are most closely divided in their presidential voting preferences, with Barack Obama holding a narrow 47% to 43% advantage over John McCain. McCain leads Obama among Protestants (48% to 41%) and Mormons (70% to 23%) while Obama holds the upper hand among Jewish voters (62% to 29%) and those with no religious affiliation (65% to 25%)."

"Catholics have traditionally been a key swing-voter group, and the 2008 election is proving to be no exception. Obama's appeal to minority voters -- including Hispanics -- helps to push him ahead of McCain among Catholics. In these data, roughly one in seven Catholic registered voters report being of Hispanic ethnicity, and they prefer Obama by a 66% to 25% margin."

Whether you count the Newsweek, LA TIMES, or Bloomburg Polls, (or not), the end result remains the same - If the election were today, McCain would be TOAST!!!!!

Actually, Obama has been the front-runner since he defeated HRC, officially.

    Almost forgot.............OH HAPPY DAYS!!!!!!!!!

THE PROBLEM WITH REALCLEARPOLITICS IS THAT THEY COULD HAVE 3 REPUTABLE POLLS SHOWING ONE CANDIDATE WITH A CONSISTENT 5 POINT LEAD, BUT ONE FAR-OUT POLL SHOWS THE OTHER CANDIDATE WITH A TWENTY POINT LEAD, SO THE BLENDED AVERAGE IS WRONG. ONLY THREE POLLS ARE RELIABLE (HISTORICALLY) - GALLUP, RASMUSSEN, AND SURVEY USA. IF YOU WANT A TRUE POLL, AVERAGE THESE THREE. MOST OF THE OTHER POLLS ARE LIKELY BIASED.

  • Posted By: jnail @ 06/25/2008 9:38:20 PM

Howard - these 2 polls are not outliers. The Gallup daily is interesting but not predictive. It is the race state by state (since that is what matters) try www.fivethirtyeight.com. Much more scientific than Real Clear Politics.
Yes we have a long time until election day but the Obama organization in all states, enthusiasm advantage for the Dems (2.5 to 1) and what will be a huge enormous $$ advantage spell disaster for McCain with his poor message and organization.
Also we are tracking news coverage by state from over 2000 media sources (local newspapers, TV and radio) as a proxy for campaign success at:
    www.barackobamaradar.com
    www.john.mccainradar.com
Obama in our first days has a nearly 2-1 advantage which will amplify as paid media increases....

    • Posted By: LuLuBelle @ 06/26/2008 1:20:39 PM

"as paid media increases"? Are you admitting that Obama is paying the media to say he is ahead? Aha! Thought so.

II would like to see a poll of just women on this. One of the candidates refers to his wife as a c*nt. I have overheard some incendiary statements by women who would not vote for a candidate who refers to his spouse that way and "wouldn't wee wee on him if his guts were on fire", as one demurely stated. Just thought I'd ask in case you get a chance to just call the ladies one day to check this out.

    • Posted By: LuLuBelle @ 06/26/2008 1:19:15 PM

I am a woman and I am voting for McCain. I don't care what he called his wife when he was mad. I am not marrying him. I want him for president.

How do you know what Obama has called his wife? It's not like he would tell you.

    • Posted By: cuppa jo @ 06/26/2008 8:30:56 AM

I am a woman and know your statement is not true. Stop the smears!

  • Posted By: tider @ 06/26/2008 3:04:16 AM

Ouuu. Touchy. Touchy. You display all the defensiveness of a true Democrat working for a true liberal magazine. The best poll money can buy, for sure. Well, if Obama can win the general election with two groups in his pocket: liberals (20% of the population) and blacks (12.7 % of the public) then let him do it.
And by the way, the two groups do overlap.

    • Posted By: summer4077 @ 06/26/2008 9:07:20 AM

He'll win it with all the republicans with a brain that are fed up with their party. Unfortunately, you seem to be part of the 17% of Americans who think things are roses and lollipops right now. Fortunately, you probably won't be able to take your head out of the sand long enough to vote!

      • Posted By: LuLuBelle @ 06/26/2008 1:15:37 PM

summer - I do not think things are roses and lollipops. I just know that replacing Bush with a man like Obama is even worse. You might need to research Obama - how he cheated to get his senate seat, then didn't show up to do his job, but managed to still collect his pay. You might want to read up about the subversive, anti-American people he is in the tank with. Is that really the direciton of change you want?

I am all for change - just not Obama's type of change. Obama will destroy this country and you better start looking some information up about him before you vote.

  • Posted By: menkryan @ 06/26/2008 8:48:21 AM

The Republican Party thought George Bush was a better candidate than McCain in 2000. So now their supporting the runner up to our current moron. Laughable. I can't wait till the debates. Obama will destroy him. I would have preferred the pre-candidate McCain who actually stood for what he believed. Once he got the nod he lined up with W and his neocons. W has the lowest approval ratings of all time. Gas is about triple the price of when he took office. The rich got richer and the sick got sicker. We are still in Iraq and I'm assuming we're still looking for WMDs because that is why we went there right? I think the Dems have the next 8 years pretty well locked up. Obama 08/12

    • Posted By: LuLuBelle @ 06/26/2008 1:08:41 PM

Obama has never won a debate yet. Obviously you don't watch debates or you would know that Obama cannot think on his feet. If he is asked a question when he hasn't had somebody prepare him a speech he just stands there and stutters and stammers and loses his train of thought. Sorry, that is why he is AVOIDING debating because he knows he sucks at it.

  • Posted By: REALITY CHECK @ 06/26/2008 1:08:07 PM

GALLUP SAYS THE CANDIDATES ARE TIED @ 44% EACH, BUT NEWSWEEK GIVES A HUGE LEAD TO OBAMA??? WHY ARE WE NOT SURPRISED, WHEN NEWSWEEK IS A LOBBYIST FOR OBAMA WITH NO JOURNALISTIC INTEGRITY!

Dont be ashame being look TOAST AS REPUBLICAN PARTY CANDIDATE......GOP NAME LOOKS EVEN LOUSY.. it's WHAT YOU"RE ...........AN Advice to those Eyeing for SENATE office

  • Posted By: mjno @ 06/26/2008 9:56:28 AM

Obama stands for nothing! He is a "straw man." Hillary was the best and only qualified candidate. However, the media and the kool-aid took over. This whole idea he wants to change politics is a naive, uninformed public.

    • Posted By: News and Notes @ 06/26/2008 10:23:45 AM

It was strange that in that Hillary won four of the last six contests, and THREE of them by a GREATER THAN 2-1 MARGIN and nobody seemed to notice, and superdelegates continued to flock to Obama. I accept the results of the primary, but my point is Obama has done very little to reassure Hillary supporters

      • Posted By: OldGamer007 @ 06/26/2008 10:37:14 AM

And if Hillary supporters were paying attention, they would know your statements are false. After someone booed her at a rally, Obama pointed his figure and told them to listen up, as he then spent several minutes talking her up.

As someone who voted in the '92 election, I don't like the Clintons for other reasons, but that's my problem. But for people like yourself to came by and make crap up, is the whole reason election cycles are labeled as the "Silly Season".

        • Posted By: News and Notes @ 06/26/2008 10:46:11 AM

My statements are true. The first is a point of fact, the second is a subjective opinion that you don't have to agree with. I'm not surprised by your response though. Some Obama supporters are not interested in alternative points of view

          • Posted By: OldGamer007 @ 06/26/2008 11:04:29 AM

As a republican for Obama (Check "about the candidates" at fuelcells.org for his initiatives on changing our dependency from foreign oil). To say I'm not interested in alternative points of view, is yet more "subjective opinions" as you put it...

            • Posted By: News and Notes @ 06/26/2008 11:46:02 AM

Then don't say alternative statements aren't true, and then dismiss them as silly

              • Posted By: OldGamer007 @ 06/26/2008 12:10:02 PM

Wording alternative statements as facts, when his record clearly points to the contrary, is... (At least in my subjective opinion)

                • Posted By: News and Notes @ 06/26/2008 12:51:06 PM

Both the objective and subjective statements had nothing to do with Obama's record. They had to do with the results of the last several primaries, and a generalized perception amongst Hillary supporters. To say I "make crap up" and saying my "statements are false" is dismissive.

  • Posted By: Jack999 @ 06/26/2008 12:44:29 PM

    REPUBLICAN PARTY is already TOAST
Out in WA now, discussed this yesterday with inlaws. Can't believe that it's even possible to do this, but the state has a pretty "interesting" primary system now where practically anything is possible (including two people from the same party facing each other in the general election).

I really don't know if a "GOP" label is really that much better than the "Republican" one, though.

John Mc Cain should can Republican to GOP so NOBODY can know which party he's belong to!!!...What an Insult of to American Voters Intelligence.

  • Posted By: REALITY CHECK @ 06/26/2008 12:38:23 PM

WE'RE SUPPOSED TO BELIEVE NEWSWEEK? WHAT A JOKE. YOU LONG AGO GAVE UP ANY SEMBLANCE OF JOURNALISTIC INTEGRITY, AND SHOULD REGISTER AS A LOBBYST FOR OBAMA.

  • Posted By: lottie @ 06/26/2008 8:59:15 AM

I am so glad that Obama is running for president and is a black man, so on a daily basis Black American can hear what white american actually thinks of black people, represented by the white media(you, fineman) can call him sneaky names like "exotic and different" that would be Pat Buchanan the biggest joke on television and Joe on morning cup of joe, you guys are good for a good laugh

    • Posted By: 4astrongamerica @ 06/26/2008 12:24:45 PM

Actually, he is 1/2 white, but has chosen to put aside that part of his heritage. As a white person, it is troubling to me that Mr. Obama would decide to turn his back on the heritage of the mother that actually raised him & yet would embrace the heritage of his father(s) that had limited involvement in his life. Very questionable!

    • Posted By: TLC for McCain @ 06/26/2008 12:07:47 PM

Lottie, I am just a "typical white person" but, IMO ,no one race baits in this campaign better than Obama himself. He has put out so many signals that McCain will come after him for being black. Now that"s is a fear tactic. And, one more thing, it is no less bigoted to come after someone because of their age as it is for the color of their skin.

  • Posted By: Rocky2001 @ 06/26/2008 11:38:03 AM

    It's 45 to 45 according to gallup.

    • Posted By: Emanuel @ 06/26/2008 11:53:26 AM

That's from the Gallup daily poll. Daily polls have the highest degree of sampling errors because people are not available for polling on any given day. A real poll uses a broader base. Obama is clearly the favorite for victory in November.

      • Posted By: Rocky2001 @ 06/26/2008 12:20:48 PM

        Hang on to that dream!!

  • Posted By: sbostich @ 06/26/2008 4:07:45 AM

Thanks to Newsweek and all of the "Press" for deciding another election for us. I don't know why we bother to even vote in America...you guys do such a good job of directing an election. Up until a few days ago, one would have thought that the only two candidates were Hillary and Obama, and now that she has "thrown in the towel", we only seem to have one candidate: Obama. Please continue to lead us like cattle to slaughter because we depend on you to think for us, tell us how we're doing, how bad everything is, and definitely who to vote for! Of course, we all know that when Obama gets in, gas prices will plummet, food prices will drop, the Iraq War will be immediately ended, and taxes will decrease...the Messiah commeth!!!

    • Posted By: summer4077 @ 06/26/2008 9:04:54 AM

Lol kind of like what the media did with Dubya--twice! I love how republicans are all up in arms over what they think to be unfair media coverage--we've dealt with it for YEARS!

      • Posted By: 4astrongamerica @ 06/26/2008 12:13:55 PM

Summer, You've got to be kidding. The media is made up of openly liberal democrats. It's not even like they try to hide it. Example...I really liked and respected Tim Russert for his toughness on both sides (rare), but during his week-long memorial, liberal democratic bias blanketed the media. The connections between the media and democratic poiticians was unmistakable.

    • Posted By: joe_mama @ 06/26/2008 5:54:05 AM

Are you so weak-minded that you allow the media to decide for you?

      (waves hand)
these are not the candidates you seek

      (waves hand)
      thank you, keep moving

      • Posted By: EveryoneHasBias @ 06/26/2008 10:22:29 AM

And Olbermann turned to Matthews and said, "Hey Chris, check out what I learned how to do. They call it the Jedi mind trick. The election is ours! Heh heh heh. Suckers."
