Why Obama is the Better Candidate, look at his impressive senate record. His first year in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 bills and co-sponsored another 427. These inculded 1.
    1. **the Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 - became law,
2.**The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act, - became law,
3.**The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act, passed the Senate,
4.**The 2007 Government Ethics Bill, - became law,
    5. **The Protection Against Excessive Executive Compensation Bill, In committee, and many more.
In all, since entering the U.S. Senate, Senator Obama has written 890 bills and co-sponsored another 1096.
An impressive record, for someone who supposedly has no record according to some who would prefer that this comparison not be made public.
    He's not just a talker.
    He's a doer.

He might be a doer to you, but he has been my Senator , and he hasn't done anything for Illinois. Quite the opposite, he says to the Chicago Sun Times that he has been "too busy" to pay attention to Springfield (capital of Illinois). Oh yeah, he ran on the "change and hope" ticket. I believed him when I voted for him. Since he has done nothing to accomplish that for Illinois, he won't get my vote again.

      • Posted By: bdhotwheel @ 06/26/2008 4:56:58 PM

I agree. This guy likes to sell wolf tickets. But when it's time to deliver, he can't. it's a shame the American people are sucking up to this guy. he talks a good game, but can't back it up.

        • Posted By: Nor-Cal for Obama @ 06/27/2008 12:43:16 PM

cant back it up , but for his state and senate records... yeah....

          Homework. Do it.

...So why did he win Il with 71 percent of the vote? Hummm......

  • Posted By: lamm01 @ 06/26/2008 4:46:10 PM

Why is every criticism or flaw of Obama's classified and reported as "misrepresentations" or racist? Why are his representations of Senator McCain's record not reported as well.... Let's try to keep the reporting unbiased, shall we?

    • Posted By: j.n @ 06/26/2008 5:52:13 PM

I do not support either canidate, but I do not beiieve that anyone needs to misrepresent McCains record,he does a very good job of that himself,he changes so oftern that I do not know where he stands on any thing.

      • Posted By: Nins @ 06/26/2008 7:05:12 PM

Here's some change you can believe in: the amount of times McCain has changed his values and positions on the issues.

The reason half of the conservative Christian right hates McCain is because they think that they can't trust him. McCain started his career as part of the Christian right (there's a little-known fact). Once he landed in the soup as part of the Keating Five (which almost derailed his career) he positioned himself as a liberal and became a reformer for campaign finance in an effort to resurrect himself. For those of you who don't remember, the Keating scandal had to do with some shim sham corporations pumping money into McCain's coffers. So McCain became a reformer to shine up his tarnished image, and that was his first departure from the right.

Other, more serious betrayals of the right came later, after McCain got swift boated by Bush. The great Texas Republican political machine laid McCain to waste, and McCain was mad as hell. He started voting against the party line and against Bush. He suddenly supported abortion rights, opposed the Bush tax cuts, co-sponsored a patient's bill of rights with Kennedy and Edwards, and got on the environmental bandwagon with John Kerry. My gosh, he actually tried to crack down on gun shows in legislation he put forth with then-Democrat Joe Lieberman. And in 2001, when Senator Jeffords of Vermont switched from Republican to Independent in an effort to counteract Bush's stranglehold on the Senate, McCain announced that he was considering becoming a Democrat, and went into a pow-wow with Senator Tom Daschle at his Sedona ranch. And did you know that John Kerry floated the idea of having McCain as his VP in '04? That was to have cemented his status as a newly-minted Democrat.

But instead of joining Kerry, McCain suddenly switched his affiliation, came out in support of Bush in '04, and jettisoned his liberal image. Suddenly, it was the "old" McCain from the 1980s back in the saddle, the neo-conservative, take no prisoners Creationist. Against abortion. For the war. The SAME man who opposed a Federal amendment banning gay marriage and openly met with gay groups now was pushing a gay marriage ban in Arizona. The SAME man who said in 1999 that he was opposed to overturning Roe vs. Wade, now suddenly in 2007 is promising that he will stack the deck in the Supreme Court with religious right judges and overturn Roe vs. Wade.

But the religious right isn't so sure about him. He's supported so many different opposing positions at so many times, that they are afraid that they are getting played in the name of McCain's political expediency.

You don't have to take my word for this. Watch news clips of McCain talking about the same issues in different years, which proves what I have written. Get on the Straight Talk Express and get it straight from the horse's mouth:

  • Posted By: 23bigdon1 @ 06/26/2008 5:49:42 PM

I am a 30-year retired sailor who was in A-4 Squadrons flying out of NAS Lemoore when Lt. John McCain was in a Lemoore squadron and wound up getting shot down over North Vietnam. His father, Admiral McCain pinned a medal on my chest during an awards ceremony aboard the USS Coral Sea in 1968. I proudly followed McCain's career for many years. When he was getting his own version of "Swiftboating" from Bush's minions during the previous campaign, I felt bad for him. Whan he cqalled the far right evangelical wingnuts "Agents of Intolerance" I agreed with him. But when he bent down to kiss the collective asses of Falwell, Robertson, Dobson and thier ilk,to beg for thier support I lost all of the respect for him that I once had. I am not crazy about Obama, but will no longer support a man who I no longer respect.

Obama, the man to ruin the US. Where is he going to get the money for thes multibillion projects. Thats right, out of our pockets. When are the people in this country going to stand up and say enough is enough. We are taxed to death for these personal projects of our government. And we in truth get no say in what they do. This is no by the people for the people, this is by the people for the politicians.

    • Posted By: Nor-Cal for Obama @ 06/27/2008 12:36:11 PM

I find it incredible that the rights argument boils down to the SAME UNTRUE crap, every time!

Instead of investigating time to understand Obamas brilliant pay as we go plans, they use the "tax + spend" argument... Its so illogical.

A REAL question is where do we get the money for the tax cuts Mccain has offered? Oh i know, we borrow MORE money from China, right?

For those who slept through World History 101...here is a condensed
    version.
Humans originally existed as members of small bands of nomadic
hunters/gatherers. They lived on deer in the mountains during the summer
and would go to the coast and live on fish and lobster in the winter.
The two most important events in all of history were:
    1. The invention of beer, and
    2. The invention of the wheel.
The wheel was invented to get man to the beer, and the beer to the man.
These facts formed the foundation of modern civilization and together were
the catalyst for the splitting of humanity into two distinct subgroups:
    1. Liberals.
    2. Conservatives.
Once beer was discovered, it required grain and that was the beginning of
agriculture. Neither the glass bottle nor aluminum can were invented yet,
so while our early humans were sitting around waiting for them to be
invented, they just stayed close to the brewery. That's how villages were
    formed.
Some men spent their days tracking and killing animals to BB Q at night
while they were drinking beer. This was the beginning of what is known as
    the Conservative movement.
Other men who were weaker and less skilled at hunting learned to live off
the conservatives by showing up for the nightly BBQ's and doing the
sewing, fetching, and hair dressing. This was the beginning of the Liberal
    movement.
Some of these liberal men eventually evolved into women. The rest became
    known as girlie-men.
Some noteworthy liberal achievements include the domestication of cats,
the invention of group therapy and group hugs, the evolution of the
Hollywood actor, and the concept of Democratic voting to decide how to
divide all the meat and beer that conservatives provided.
Over the years, Conservatives came to be symbolized by the largest, most
powerful land animal on earth, the elephant. Liberals are symbolized by
    the jackass.

    • Posted By: willnotvoteobama @ 06/26/2008 7:09:19 PM

Modern liberals like imported beer (with lime added), but most prefer
white wine or imported bottled water. They eat raw fish but like their
beef well done. Sushi, tofu, and French food are standard liberal fare.
Another interesting evolutionary side note: most of liberal women have
higher testosterone levels than their men.
Most social workers, personal injury attorneys, journalists, dreamers in
Hollywood and group therapists are liberals. Liberals invented the
designated hitter rule because it wasn't fair to make the pitcher also
      bat.
Conservatives drink domestic beer. They eat red meat and still provide for
their women. Conservatives are big-game hunters, rodeo cowboys,
lumberjacks, construction workers, firemen, medical doctors, police
officers, corporate executives, athletes, Marines, and generally anyone
who works productively. Conservatives who own companies hire other
conservatives who want to work for a living.
Liberals produce little or nothing. They like to govern the producers and
decide what to do with the production. Liberals believe Europeans are more
enlightened than Americans. That is why most of the liberals remained in
Europe when conservatives were coming to America. They crept in after the
Wild West was tamed and created a business of trying to get more for
      nothing.
Here ends today's lesson in world history.......
It should be noted that a liberal may have a momentary urge to angrily
respond to the above before forwarding it.
A conservative will simply laugh and be so convinced of the absolute truth
of this history that it will be forwarded immediately to other true
believers, and to more liberals...just to piss them off.
      Have a great day!

America has ALREADY voted for change! They were going show Bush in 2006! And we sure got CHANGE!

    Before Democrats controlled Congress:

    1) Consumer confidence stood at a 2 1/2 year high.

    2) Regular unleaded gasoline was $2.19 a gallon.

    3) Unemployment rate was 4.5%.

Since voting in a Democratic Congress in 2006 we have seen:

    1) Consumer confidence plummet.

    2) The cost of regular gasoline soar to over $4.00 a gallon.

    3) Unemployment is up to 5% (a 10% increase).

    4) American households have seen $2.3 trillion in equity value evaporate (stock and mutual fund losses).

    5) Americans have seen their home equity drop by $1.2 trillion dollars; 1% of American homes are now in foreclosure.

    6) Oil was 63 dollars a barrel the day before the newest congress convened. It closed last Friday at 126 dollars a barrel. That is doubled for those with fuzzy math.

    7) Economic Growth for the 4th quarter of 2006 in GDP was 3.5 percent.

    8)1st Quarter 2008 0.6 percent.

Remember it's Congress that makes laws, not the President. The President has to work with what is handed to the Administration.

      OK Willnotvote ,

      1st - look up a few words. Lets start with " Veto " Minor " & " Majority "

      Incredible....

    • Posted By: metzlerd @ 06/26/2008 9:25:55 PM

They were going show Bush in 2006! And we didn't do ENOUGH to get change, as Bush and many of the Republicans in congress have been able to stand in the way.

      1) Consumer confidence simply has not recovered indeed it has gone lower since 2003. The upward blip would correspond to the Republican lies about Iraq which were eventually discovered to be lies.
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Consumerconfidence1997-2007.gif
This graph does not represent the recent downturns, which in fact reflect more than just the laws that Bush won't let get passed.

      2) The cost of regular gasoline soar to over $4.00 a gallon, and did most of that soaring before 2006.
      You'll find a nice graph here: http://inflationdata.com/inflation/images/charts/Oil/Gasoline_inflation_chart.htm.
Whatever has happened since 2006 has not been enough to stop the rise in prices, but has certainly NOT caused the problem. It is also clear that Republican energy policies of the last 20+ years are part of the problem.
      .
      3) Your unenemployment numbers are rediculous, but unemployment was at 7% in 2002-2004
      http://www.csus.edu/indiv/j/jensena/sfp/us/rec_unem.htm

4 and 5) American households have seen $2.3 trillion in equity value evaporate (stock and mutual fund losses).
I'm not sure what to make of this data, other than it looks like home prices have been grossly inflating since around 2000. (I wonder what happened then?)
      See the graph here http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2006/08/26/weekinreview/27leon_graph2.large.gif
graph to show the foreclosure issue: http://tomchappell.com/blog/2007/04/insane-housing-foreclosures-chart.html (california)
Clearly the problem did not start in 2006 or since, but has been building up since 2000, and is most likely related to deregulation..

      6) Gas Prices.
The majority of the gains in prices took place beginning around 2002.
      You'll find a nice graph here: http://inflationdata.com/inflation/images/charts/Oil/Gasoline_inflation_chart.htm.
Whatever has happened since 2006 has not been enough to stop the rise in prices, but has certainly NOT caused the problem. It will take drastically new energy policies from what the Republicans have been pushing for the last 20+ years. (Drilling for more oil is just not going to cut it!)

We can go on and on, but it appears your numbers are just spin when you look at the big picture. Your numbers are picked to misrepresent reality. Most of the problems can be traced back to the Republican policies in one way or another. The economy and the war in Iraq are related. The economy and the Republican energy policies or lack thereof are related.

Remember it's Congress that WRITES the laws, and the President that actually MAKES them laws by signing them. The President CAN work with what is handed to the Administration, even take a leadership role in submitting legislation for consideration by congress, or as has been done most recently he can get in the way..

  • Posted By: martin_gray @ 06/26/2008 8:05:26 PM

    will not vote,

none of this has any relationship to the 2006 elections. When have the Democrats been able to push through a bill that the president has not vetoed? They lack the majority necessary to overcome the Bush veto so life goes on as it has since 2000. Republican deregulation of the investment and banking industry is mostly responsible for the subprime mortgage debacle and that started under President Reagan. One can hardly blame the Democrats for those Americans who drive muscle cars, unnecessary trucks and those huge SUVs for driving up the price of fuel in America. Have you checked the price of fuel in Germany? I doubt that the Democrats can control fuel prices all over the world. Unemployment is up because purchases are down. The rising costs of refinancing subprime mortgages plus the huge increases in fuel costs are driving out disposal income. American's have reigned in their spending and that is why unemployment is rising. That and the propensity of corporate America to outsource both high and low paying jobs to foreign nations.

Remember, Congress can pass no laws that cannot clear the Presidential veto pen and that has been the case since Bush has been elected.

Actually, will not vote, you need to read a few good books on economics and study the facts before you come back to your personal blog.

This is a good article. I am a McCain supporter, but we need to keep all politicians honest. i normally do not believe much of what I read in Newsweek, but I see this article is written by factcheck.org - makes it much more believable.

    • Posted By: Nor-Cal for Obama @ 06/27/2008 12:18:24 PM

WHY are you a McCain supporter? Seeing as how your eyes do appear to be open, and your mind as well?

  • Posted By: whala @ 06/26/2008 8:52:19 PM

John McCain does seem to be one to extrapolate interesting interpretations (aka gross exaggerations) out of the comments of others. He torpedoed Romney in the primaries with that tactic, and I thought it was pretty tacky.

On the other hand, Obama's guarded "I would not rule out Nuclear" comment is not what I am looking for in a leader. It shows a lack of commitment and decisiveness. He seems to want us to wait until he is in office before he makes any real commitment on what he will do. Obama's plan to fund alternative energy research from decreased war spending, or by raising taxes on gasoline (indirectly through higher taxes on oil companies) doesn't make much sense to me. Once we do get out of Iraq, that money needs to go into reducing the debt we incurred as a result of the War.

Of the two, McCain seems much more decisive on energy policy, and his plan better thought out, although the tax holiday is a pretty ridiculous idea.

If one of these guys would come up with a plan to use energy revenue to develop future technology without costing the people more money, they would have my attention. Here's the plan to do just that. We can immediately begin releasing 2 million barrels of oil per day from our reserves, and use the income from that oil to fund our push for alternative energy. This will also relieve the current price pressure we are seeing at the pump. We could release oil at that rate for 10 years, and still maintain enough in reserve to replace our imports for 3 years at current import rates. During those 10 years, we move to eliminate foriegn dependence by drilling for our own oil. That way, we are off of foriegn oil in 10 years, and will have put hundreds of billions of dollars towards the development of cleaner and safer energy technology. We will once again lead the world in energy development. With such an effort, I am confident that by the end of the initial 10 years, we will have found ways to make alternative energy cost effective, and will be in a position to begin the very lengthy process of converting our society to the new energy sources.

McCain isn't more decisive when it comes to energy? Are you serious? Did you read this article? It clearly shows Obama had a thought out and articulated 150 b. package, when Mccain has rolled out a bunch of pander to the public nonsense .

The GOP takes advantage of those not paying attention.

Obama's reservations about Nuclear are simply that it be clean and safe. It has nothing to do with getting in office, and everything to do with the the disposal issues.

McCain's policies are in many cases rediculous.
Gas Tax holiday for GAS COMPANIES not consumers.
Drill for more oil (Same Republican answer since the 70's), and will do nothing to get us away from oil.
Not a bad idea to give a prize for a battery for an electric car, but it is simply a drop in the bucket compared to the amount of resources that Obama planned to spend on this issue even before McCain popped this one out.
Worst of all, distorting Obama's energy policy ideas shows that he is not serious about any of this. He doesn't want to talk intelligently about energy, he wants to decieve us on it.

Anything through Newsweek has to be pro Obama and anti McCain just as it was pro O and anti-Hillary.

Nothing new here. Just the same old one slided slamming by Newsweek!

Well, actually, Factcheck.org had a piece up not to long ago about where Obama mischaracterized something Mccain said.

But it's not Obama's fault if he has a lot of positive things to point out.

Don't hate me cause I'm special.

apjames: I agree. People who hate (on either side) don't really care about minor details such as facts. Maybe its because I'm from Pittsburgh, but I don't like blogs where its just people showing how mean and hateful they can be. It really shows the level of intelligence you're dealing with.......when all is said and done I think most Americans are thirsty for some good stuff.

"Willnotvoteforobama"... Copy/paste comments I suppose are the hallmark of the internet campaign, but it's still a bit ridiculous. Don't you have an original thought? Did you read the article? I suppose not.

McCain is weak on energy and weak on national security because he doesn't understand the changing world. That his commercial references a movie from 1962 is an interesting note. He doesn't get nuance. Perhaps he used to. Maybe it's the base. I think part of it is pretend. Nuance doesn't sell to the GOP.

I JUST SAW A CLIP OF OBAMA & CLINTON ON THE PLANE---this is pretty darn exciting, and no, I'm not a young voter, probably older than most of the posters. I like him. I think they'll do a lot of good.

Distorting Obama ---- What else is new? If you can't beat 'em just keep repeating same old attacks. If anyone thinks Obama is all talk, they're not listening and have already made up their minds. I've always respected McCain, but he WILL: continue the Bush mistakes, blunders and DISASTEROUS terms!!

  • Posted By: mtovvnsend@gmail.com @ 06/26/2008 3:08:44 PM

I'd like someone to ask Obama if he feels that we NOW have the technology and capabilities to create new nuclear power plants "cleanly and safely". I'm guessing the answer to that would be some sort of comment to the effect of we aren't there yet. That equals no new plants. Talk about waffling on a major issue, I'd bet the McCain camp ad is actually quite accurate.

Futher Food for thought: If Obama said in plain english, "we now have the capability and safety procedures to build new nuclear power plants and I will support opening new plants during my presendency", He would NOT be the Democratic nominee. Plain and simple. He won't (or cannot) support this.

    • Posted By: Heartlight3 @ 06/26/2008 3:18:24 PM

How is saying no nuclear power plants until we figure out how to store the waste "waffling on an issue"? I certainly wouldn't want us to endanger the planet by going forward without a plan for dealing with the consequences. Isn't that what got us into this situation in the first place?

      • Posted By: liltimmy @ 06/27/2008 11:30:00 AM

And what is plain english? "Weez needz mo' din won tipe ah inerjies. eyes dunt care where the waste goes so long I dunt miss Nascar , "

      • Posted By: mtovvnsend@gmail.com @ 06/26/2008 4:21:23 PM

The article states that obama supports nuclear plants. McCain's add states he doesn't. The waffling comes in when Obama says, "I support it, but..." That he gets credit for pseudo-support without actually having to support new plants is crap. And as far as consequences, no amount of solar, wind, geothermal, conservation, or other bio-based fuel is going to replace our currently coal-based energy needs and stop global warming alone. So unless you live off the grid (and you post here says not), better come to grips with a multi-pronged energy approach (yes, multi includes all those listed above PLUS nuclear and perhaps more).

This is a make or break election and we must be critical of the attack ads and spins of each campaign less we regret like we did with Bush!!!.
First Mccain's proposals to achieve energy independence are:1) to drill, drill, drill on protected wildlife refuge areas, all federal lands and on off-shore.2) develop powerful battery to power electric cars.Build 45 to 100 nuclear power plants. Very long and impressive policy proposal list to the uninformed, economically and politically illiterate!!!.
First, drill here, drill there, drill everywhere was George Bush policy and we all know what we achieved with that.Nothing close to energy independence!!!. Even if Mccain's policy is implemented NOW; it will take the USA between 15 to 30 years to bring any of his oil drilling online.Even then the new USA production will not make a dent or much difference on gas prices now or in the future. But we would have destroyed the last environmentally protected areas and our beautiful coastal areas.Has Mccain ever thought of the environmental and societal costs of these irresponsible policy???. Worst of all, what then will we offer and to children and grandchildren???. How irresponsible can a desparate candidate go.Mccain is alll a league onto himself!!!.
Build unsafe and unclean 45 to 100 nuclear plants. But that will not lower gas prices.Worst we will be stuck with unsafe and unclean nuclear plants long after Mccain is dead. Remember the near melt-down at long Island in Pennsylvania. We were very lucky. And remember the Soviet Union Cherobly, they were not very lucky and we know the environmental and humanitarian costs of having irresponsible leaders like those in the Soviet Union. They believed and had the same "mind-set" and "disregard" for "policy rooted in good science". My God $300 million bounty for a battery?. Suppose a Japanese or Chinese scientist come up with that battery, will Mccain pay up???. The old republican goat is losing his old mind. He's illusionating and imaging things. America doesnt have the oil reserves to talk of oil independence. It doesn't matter whether we drill ourselves to oblivion!!!.
However, the correct understanding of energy independence means the USA must "diversify" into alternative energy sources like green energy:ethonol, bio-diesal, electric, wind, solar, coal and nuclear. The catch-word is "diversity and mix" of alternative energy sources!!!.
