it would seem that the only real government policy action that ever is taken is that which benefits a Big Corporate concern , and this is a trend that has led us to not evolve and expand our resource base but rather consolidate it , and shorten the supply , which is now causinf inflation , soo whats the next step ????

There are so many ways to contribute to the improvement of our current condition. Many that you and others have brought up in this commentary. One great thought that I read herein was 'to take responsibility for our current state rather than blaming it on government' (I am paraphrasing). We, as US citizens, consumers, voters, constituents and members of the larger global community are obligated to action, not just talk. We need to cut our consumption and voice our disaproval to our elected officials. We have the technology to reverse the problems that face us, our worst enemy has been complacency and inertia. Thank-you for asking.

This guy Pres Bush gave an award too , Pelosi and Steny were there too , and then they turn around and subsidise our food for ethanol production causing inflation on food , and everything related to producing food , and this is the only thing thats keeping our economic book keeping functioning right now , because Resource Expansion is missing from the overall economic function of supply versus demand to keep pricing low overall .

I agree that Corn Ethanol is a waste of perfectly good food, and has a rediculously poor conversion rate. While small quantities that can use corn by-products can be cost effective, that is not the answer to the oil cost problem, nor does it help anyone's environmental concerns.

Bobhus, oil consumption is only disgraceful to those who buy in to the whole global warming exaggeration. For the rest of us, we want to limit the amount of pollution we create, and to find cleaner technology, but this notion that the world is going to die in the next ten years if we don't immediately stop consuming all oil has got to go.

Dr Hansen, the NASA scientist who started this whole climate change alarm, is the same guy who led the charge in the clobal cooling scare of the 70's. It's interesting that they use NASA's temperature readings, which have been altered from the original data to support the global warming theory. Gee, I wonder if Dr Hansen had anything to do with the altering of the data??

THE REAL ANSWER TO OUR ENERGY CRISIS IS TO EXPLORE ALL OPTIONS. UNFORTUNATELY, OBAMA HAS EXCLUDED THE MOST OBVIOUS SOLUTIONS OF ALL, DRILLING HERE (AND CREATING JOBS HERE), AND BUILDING NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS, LIKE THE REST OF THE WORLD IS DOING FOR THEIR ELECTRICAL NEEDS. OBAMA'S IDEAS WON'T BE REALISTIC FOR 30 YEARS. WHAT DO WE DO IN THE MEANTIME - USE HORSES AND BUGGIES?

    • Posted By: starfire8181 @ 06/27/2008 2:20:43 PM

Obama never said that he was against nuclear, he just said that you have to be careful. And he is right, Please anyone who is for McCain tell me how he plans to pay for 45 new plants, where he is putting them and where he is going to store the waste. maybe if the gov't put more money into alternatives ten years ago we would have another option. People are looking for new energy options all the time now. There is even a man who is looking to run cars on algea, it's cheap and easy to produce. And if cars can run on used vegetable oil there have to be other alteratives besides oil. Just because there have not been a lot of incidents with oil spills they still happen. oil is not the best solution. The gas station down the street from me just found out that they have been leaking 10000 gallons of gas into the ground for years and never new. that gas has contaminated the water and the ground.

Thank you, It's getting hard to find people with common sense on these discussion boards. Please take a look at my post regarding using our oil reserve as a temporary measure. I'd be interested in your thoughts on it. I have to think that with 21 billion barrels of oil in reserve, we could surely use some of that to help us with our current problems, and spped the advancement to alternative energy sources.

      • Posted By: Swanny8 @ 06/27/2008 11:22:13 AM

I'm a democrat but I think both candidates are right in part. I'm not for ethanol (feeding autos while there are people starving and homeless doesn't make sense to me), off shore drilling isn't environmentally friendly but in the short term I think both are necessary while EAGERLY exploring advancement towards oil independence. Unless you're living at home with parents you don't quit a job until you have another already lined up. Why give up oil options before other options are readily available?

    The future of our world needs to be the next focus as these issues are our realities , read these comments , and statements and lets design our ways forward accordingly ; for the sake of survival instead of only focusing on profitability , because the way profit was originally designed was to promote development that would not lead to consolidation of humanities needs , but to be a tool that would constantly be driving expansion so that humanity could continue to prosper and that means too live ; we are reaching a time in which , like past generations that faced shortages that lead too conflicts and wars , we are there again , so change in procedures is needed to miss yet again the next great conflict of our time , " Famine " , lets use our understandings of today's education and history too stay ahead of this never ending struggle we face ; below are some ideas that can help too provide a future both in resource , which can lead to a New generation of wealth through these developments that will sustain Humanity into the future ;

This is one time that we could use a really fast calendar that gets us to November in just a couple of weeks before Bushy boy pushes the wrong button and ruins another whole country out there somewhere.

I lost my support for this guy after he gave this guy an award for telling us the shortage thats coming in our food supply in the next 30 years , and then Bush turns around and Subsidies food production for ethanol , instead of subsidising alternatives away from Food related industries ....hum , either he is not in tune , or hes bought off by the big businesses that are benefiting by the inflation this subsidy is causing , hum think about this for a minute , please . . . . . . . . . . .

My old dad used to have a saying when things got out of control that it was like "a madman with a machine gun". I would visualize that, and it is sort of like what happened when the powers that be started to let Bush actually make decisions. Then, once he got control he wouldn't give it back.
Now, the same bunch picked an old codger to run who will shortly not have the capacity to pour p*ss out of a boot so that they can get things back up and running again. They will let him read a speech once in a while and look like a president while they "fix us up like things ought to be", wink wink. It is said that they have toilet tissue in their bathrooms with the Constitution printed on each square. But, that's just a rumor. It could be only the first ten amendments, which is what they are most interested in abolishing, one way or the other.

while we are at it about energy use , why do we continue to have golf courses with real grass rather than artifical turf ??? The water waste and all the mowing all the time wasting energy for what ???? and all these joy riding small plane owners who do nothing but say hey lets go for a ride , whats does that do for our energy issues ????

Though, the time that the press caught him, he didn't say Mrs., nor Mc. Just plain C*nt. I don't really think that he meant it that way, but, due to his degree of senility, he just got his vowels mixed up. This is happening a lot lately. The plan is to hurry him into office, like Bush, and then let the same crew take over anyway. Bush was never intended to run things. Cheney was doing just fine until 9/11 running the presidency. But after using the blowhorn at the sight of the fallen towers, Bushy got to thinking that he could run things because the crowd seemed to love him there when he said, "I hear you". Just another bad break for the old U S of A.

There is a lot of energy out there in the global warming. We should capture all that heat and use it for heating until the weather gets back to where we want it. Now, we will have to vote on the desired temperature because some like it cold and some like it hot. After we vote the right temperature, the rest is just a breeze. Cancel that next order for coal and natural gas.

Another measure that would allow us to travel almost without any fuel at all would be better planning of the national freeway system. There are too many level stretches and uphill stretches. The whole system should be redesigned so that all highways are downhill. We could then just coast silently to wherever we wish to go. These ideas are donated free of charge to the general public.

We may run out of oil before we can construct enough nuclear plants to fuel our electricity across the nation. Especially if we start a third war - with Iran.

Vote Obama - he will figure out a way to transition from our current dependency on fossil fuels - it will be a very hard pill to swallow for the oil industry, but I think it will accelerate faster than under McCain.

McCain is on the right track - he's getting expert advice from the energy business execs. We are peaking out on oil supply globally and this will cause a major upheaval in how we deal with our looming transportation crisis. But the GOP is stale, old and looking out for their own pockets - Obama will generally be tougher to deal with, for these businesses, but in effect he will spur needed growth in new directions much sooner than McSame and his cronies.

Cheers - get your horse and buggy now before the runup in prices comes on bicycles and horses/donkeys. Remember, you read it here first!

No, Obama's plan will delay the progress. We need more money invested into future technology, and that money currently comes from taxes on oil, which continues to be choked by ever increasing EPA regulation. Because of this over-regulation, we currently produce HALF as much oil as we did in the 70s. The EPA stands in the way of progress toward the very environment they want to create. Increasing our oil production will increase the investment in energy research, and will accellerate the pace of development. In the mean time, until we increase our production, we need to release oil from our reserves to provide a substantial increase in funds for research.

      • Posted By: notroubleatall1963 @ 06/27/2008 12:18:53 PM

I'm sorry, but there is not that much production left to "accelerate" even if we do dip into our continental shelf and drill more offshore US. You are living in a delusion - there are no more huge oil reserves left to discover; the oil business knows it. Exxon is investing heavily in buying back its own stock because they know that's the only "play" left to make the really big bucks in the next few years. They're not investing as much in exploration and development; nor is anyone else - there is a LOOMING SUPPLY SHORTAGE IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS and we're all going to see it happen pretty fast.

Good luck to us all - it may not matter who wins the White House. The global economy will crash so hard you won't know what hit you.

        • Posted By: whala @ 06/27/2008 1:11:17 PM

If you're predictions are accurate, we need to pursue the quickest route to self sufficiency, and alternative technology is much further out than drilling for our own oil is. I'd much rather be in a country that is prepared to be self sufficient while developing technology than I would one that is putting all our eggs in the basket of technology advancement, and hoping the world will take care of us until we figure something else out.

        • Posted By: whala @ 06/27/2008 12:54:31 PM

When I say release from our reserves, I'm talking about using from the 21 billion barrels we have stored away in our strategic reserves. If we are serious about getting off of oil in say 25 or so years, we won't need to have a reserve then anyway, so why not use it in the mean time.

      • Posted By: notroubleatall1963 @ 06/27/2008 12:24:47 PM

How come petroleum rose from $20/bbl to $140/bbl since Bush took over the White House in 2000? That argument about the EPA is tired and stale. He pushed back enormously on EPA regulation and look what happened - here we are, moaning about $4 at the pump when every indicator tells us to expect twice that next year... and it's because of the supply-demand fundamentals. Speculation, regulation - it's all subterfuge for the government - they are powerless to control this crash because our entire Civilization is totally dependent on OIL. This is the beginning fo the End of the Oil Era.... I don't care what arguments you make to justify the GOP stance or anyone else's.

We must all CONSERVE energy NOW and stop wasting it driving around for joy rides. Telecommuting should be mandatory for as many people as possible. The global supply of petroleum is peaking out and from now on, depletion of the remaining global reserves will accelerate dramatically.

        • Posted By: whala @ 06/27/2008 12:52:15 PM

Tired and stale, maybe, but still true. Is it true that Oil companies actively work to protect the demand for their product by purchasing competing industry? Probably. Is Al Gore turning into a profiteering money grubber off of global warming? It sure looks that way to me. Neither side is clean in this thing, and the sooner we all realize that, and learn to compromise, the sooner we can begin to make some progress. Everyone want's to throw stones at the other side instead of looking at the whole picture, both good and bad from both sides, and figuring out a reasonable solution.

McCain is mature enough, and his thinking way to old. We need new ideals and fresh thoughts to change the direction of this country. We must stop warring at every opportunity, change our tax codes to stop benefiting the top 1% of Americans, improve our health care system, stop spending tax dollars into outrageous deficits, change our disgraceful consumption of oil and other natural resources, improve the quality of life of ALL Americans, and much more. John McCain is not capable of these challenges. It not that he is too old, it is his thinking is archaic.
