Comment: People like you are uniformed, ridulous and just make me laugh. That technology is YEARS away from being effectivew for the typical US consumers needs. Also BIG OIL did not stop anay technology. The World is too small a place now. Can you imagine the RICHES ANYONE would get that could solve our energy CRISIS? There are Dozens of Dozens of countries and companies that Are working on the solution and would LOVE to amrket it once they have it. It (the solution) just hasn't been developed, YET. Use some common intelligence.



BIG OIL Has Bought off the Government over the years , to manipulate the Energy markets , just like the Multi-national Retailers like all the marts , have manip0ulated Trade Policies too , be able to dominate the Free markets with production in lower manipulated Currency Countries like in Asia , too be able to have products made at 10 cents on the dollar and Import tarriff Free back into the Higher Priced Currency markets , with volume production to saturate the markets a nd therefore be dominate in their Capacity of sales . this trend over time wiped out the small Business sector of the Mom and pop store era , which was the time when America had a Well diverse Wealth redistribution , and Tax revenue that support the Community level of infrustructure requirements .

Comment: Check out fuelcells.org. Those alternative energy sources that you think needs to be developed, were developed over thirty years ago. But thanks to big oil companies buying out patents on alternative fuels to ward of competition, people like yourself are stuck arguing what equates to the model-T when it comes to energy.

Grown up?? Maybe for 40 years ago! All oil drilling offshore will do is ruin our planet MORE!! The oil companies now have the opportunity to drill where they already have rights, but all they want is more!! The only reason they haven't put down more rigs is to keep the price up...DUHHHH! And couldn't you just see everyone with electric cars-how the price of that utility would rise!! We need alternative energy plans and the jobs that they would provide. Have you ever noticed that MCSHAME never says how he's going to pay for his plans; that's because DUHHHHHHHHHHHH, it will be the middle class again who pays for any of his ideas!! Incubus67. Technicially, your comment is true: "cow manure, sugar, corn, wind, switchgrass, solar, none of that is enough for our thirst for energy." This would beg the question of whether we can reduce our thirst: i.e. CAFE standards, efficient buildings. combine this with limited incentives for alternative energy sources. Incentives shoudl be result-based and should not choose the technology: that is what the free market is for. Also, notice you left out coal from your list of energy sources. Anyone living in America who fails to mention coal as an energy source is as blind as a bat. There are several ways to clean up coal-fired power generation and we have more of it than any country in the world. Get real. Also, you state "we must drill". Well, we are drilling with vigor. don't play the victim card. We need innovation on a national scale.

McCain is very ruth especially to women. This is examplified in his campaign train, senate and daily life. McCain is very arrogant and wild to be president.

Another problem facing Americans is the weak dollar. Is there really a gas shortage? Any of us can go to any gas station anywhere in the US and get gas for our cars. There are no even / odd days as the past.

The weak dollar is why we are spending so much for not only gas but everything. Thanks a lot Mr. Bush. A true loser.

All you CHILDREN that use scare tactics to try to turn people off to more drilling: 1) you don't have to pay $5/Gal and more to soon $8, $9 etc. 2) you have no understanding what bullent 1 would do to our country/economy. Britian has been getting MOST of their oil offseas (can we say North SEAS CHILDREN) for DECADES with nary an incident 3) China has signed an agreement with Cuba to do drilling in their waters (first verticle, then horizontal to the oil off florida to get at OUR oil reserves. Who do you want drilling off our coasts, China or the U.S? Who do you want to get the financial advantages of this oil? Who do you think would be more environmental safe in getting this oil, U.S. or China? 4) Name one horrific incident of offshore drilling in the last 20 YEARS...
You OSAMA supporters don't want to do ANYTHING, but yet have NO PLAN except to wait for some UNKNOWN solution to come forward on its own. NERO FIDDLED WHILE ROME BURNED....

Not only is McSybil's plan old. It's retired and been put to rest. It won't work and those of us who think know that.

Michael, you have renewed my hope in Newsweek and journalism with this article. I'm not sure what exactly makes an energy plan "grown up", but I agree with your premise. I don't like McCain for many reasons, but he is miles ahead of Obama on this one. Obama's real problem is that there is NO good solution that doesn't involve harvesting our own oil while alternative technology continues to be developed, and I don't think he is prepared to turn on the environmentalists he is so committed to.

Contrary to the last claim in your article, however, there is an obvious answer to the current oil price problem, but so far, nobody's going there. If we draw 2 million barrels of oil per day from our reserves for the next 10 years, that would do the following:

1) Provide some immediate relief in gas prices. It may even be enough to burst the current price bubble, which would substantially reduce prices.

2) Provide a huge revenue stream which can be used to develop safer and cleaner alternatives. The American people can't afford to shoulder the burden of this development.

We have enough in our reserves to draw 2 million barrels/day for 10 years while we get our wells going to become foriegn oil independent. At this rate, we will only reduce our reserve by 1/3, and would still maintain enough to replace all of our imported oil for about 2-1/2 years in case of emergency. This plan will have us off of foriegn oil in 10 years, and would likely have us off of fossil fuel in about 25 years.
