    Comment: PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE TO BE HELD SUNDAY AT COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY

    The Free and Equal Elections Coalition (FREE) and the Columbia Political Union are pleased to announce that a Presidential debate will be held this coming Sunday, October 19th, 2008, on the campus of Columbia University.

    ALL SIX of the Presidential candidates who appear on enough state ballots to acquire the 270 Electoral Votes needed to become President are invited. They are as follows (listed in alphabetical order by affiliation):

    Constitution Party Candidate: Chuck Baldwin
    Democratic Party Candidate: Barack Obama
    Green Party Candidate: Cynthia McKinney
    Independent Candidate: Ralph Nader
    Libertarian Party Candidate: Bob Barr
    Republican Party Can John McCain

    The Columbia Political Union will present the debate from 8:00pm to 10:00pm in the Altschul Auditorium, located at 417 International Affairs Building. The debate will be moderated by Pacifica Radio's Amy Goodman, the host of "Democracy Now!". CSPAN will cover the debate, and live radio broadcasts are expected.

    "The Columbia Political Union is committed to energizing political discourse on Columbia's campus," said Allon Brann, Columbia Political Union Publisher. "As a non-partisan organization, we work to provide students with opportunities to encounter and engage with political ideas across a wide ideological spectrum, and on a wide range of issues."

    "It is with these goals in mind that we have organized this Presidential Debate: to give all candidates-- either within or outside of the political "mainstream"-- the opportunity to speak directly to students about their goals on the issues they deem critical for this country."

    "We have invited all eligible candidates, and it is our sincere hope that all will participate, to ensure the substance and rigor of the dialogue which we believe is crucial at this time."

    Certified letters officially inviting each candidate have been sent to the respective campaigns.

    The Free and Equal Elections Coalition and the Columbia Political Union await the response from the candidates. All candidates' supporters are encouraged to contact the Presidential campaigns and urge them to attend.

    The Columbia Political Union seeks to enhance involvement in the political process, domestic and international, and draw every member of the campus community into an ongoing discussion of political ideas.

    FREE is a coalition of political parties, independent citizens and civic organizations formed to promote free and equal elections in the United States.

    Comment: Well,one thing is settled,if nothing else. Obama may well become president,which may be for better or worse,as one cannot see this far into the future insofar as domestic and foreign issues will allow,both being always and anon in flux. But this thing is known. Any American trust in what remains in the Fourth Estate will be shattered beyond any repair. Acting as partisan political advocates at this stage,they will never be seen as ''journalists''in any capability. Thus viewer and readership will continue their decline,forcing century-and-beyond old newspapers and magazines to slip into the oblivion where they belong. The debates in the new presidency,will take place in the battlegrounds of opinion of the Internet,where the ''new journalism''of decidely more libertarian,less stridently partisan content,will replace the old. Clift can then be relied upon to go mutter her inanities at Radcliffe or some such and old copies of NEWSWEAK can be utilized as firestarters.

    Comment: So great is the intelligence of Obama that I am concerned that the USA should recognise this as fully as it deserves.

    He should be crowned Emperor Obama the Great in a ceremony modelled on the coronation of that other hugely gifted man, Emperor Bokassa of the Central African Republic.

    Emperor Bokassa's coronation ceremony, complete with carriages drawn by white horses in all the healthful, steaming heat of Bangui, is an event still cherished in the capacious memory of Africa.

    Who among us will forget how the grateful citizenry of Bangui rent the welkin with lusty cheers as, lined up under the sagging palm trees amid their rotting huts, the carriage swept by them, their Imperial Majesties waving graciously. Particular note was taken of the scarcely-earthly grace of the svelte Empress (weight: only 3 tons)?

    So overwhelming was the grandeur of this ceremony, that the very hippopotamuses on the regrettably muddy Ubangui-Shari river on which Bangui's noble if gently deliquescing hutments stand, could not repress magnificent yawns.

    Here is an event, set in that very ancient land of his roots - Africa! - that Obama will be thrilled to replicate in Washington. The Empress Michelle Obama will show no less graciously than the Empress Bokassa.

    This coronation of Emperor Obama, certain to glisten with a particularly grateful sheen at the top of the world's social register of glittering occasions, will serve to inaugurate an extremely desirable trend: America's shaking off of its woeful provincialism and its adoption of an only too needful willingness to learn from that first instructor of all mankind: Africa !

    "Africa, Land of the Sun,
    The King of Continents,
    The Ancient One !

    And now - o what unbearable Drama !
    The land that Spewed forth - Obama! "

    OBAMA NEEDS TO Associate McCAIN with the word war as much as possible. Everytime McCain throws out the experience question OBAMA has to stress that new experience is needed to improve the economy not "OLD EXPERIENCE".

    I recently heard her speak at a function and she referred to the late columnist Molly Ivins as the "late, great, Molly Ivins". Now I don't mean to speak ill of the dead, but Molly Ivins was a raving loon. So really, in a nutshell, that is about all you need to know about Eleanor Clift - she admires dead lunatics.

You and all these desperate conservatives who are now reduced to relying on the "Bradley" effect of people lying to pollsters about being willing to vote for a black candidate when they actually plan to vote for McCain. Question - why would anyone do that? The only two reasons posed by you losers is (1) white voters are embarrased to say they wouldnt vote for Obama because it might lead to them being labeled racists and (2) white voters may want to artifically inflate Obama's poll numbers to McCain's upset all that more crushing. Both arguments are absurd. Dealing with each in order (1) given the well documented problems Obama had with "working class white voters" in OH, PA, KY, and WV, white voters have no problem expressing a choice "other" than Obama and noone would credibly call them racists just because they tell some pollster they support McCain.

    As to (2), helping Obama's poll numbers, even if only to mislead him as to the support he has in one state or another, permits Obama the credibility to go to donors and raise incredible amounts of money. That money not only imperils McCain's chances of winning the race in ways those voters could not possibly foresee, it allows Obama to pull along a whole host of down ballot democratic candidates that could threaten to swell the democratic majorities in congress to insurmountable margins even if Obama lost. Why would these white voters allow Obama to gain such momentum, favorable press, and money when such advantages could easily bring in enough voters to make up for their "fake" votes and still tip it to Obama? Thats a serious risk these white voters need not take to defeat Obama and I've yet to hear a conservative explain why such a risk would be taken unnecessarily.

    Bottom line, McCain cannot win without OH an MI and Obama has early leads in both. Obama can win without OH or MI (even though he is certain to take at least one of those) and the current RCP electoral map has Obama up 238 to McCain's 190 (and thats with giving McCain FL just for the sake of argument). Obama's favorability rating is now +30 while McCain's is just +15. You can believe that all the folks polled by so many pollsters are lying (a rather convenient belief now that McCain is down in the polls and a belief I wager you wouldnt hold if the reverse were true), but I rely upon the empirical evidence available and that right now suggests Obama is winning. Its early, so we'll see. Just wonering what country you and all these conservatives have agreed amongst yourself to relocate to should Obama win. Just wanted to know so that I can avoid ever visiting the place or even mentioning it in polite conversation. Have a good trip morons - trust that you will not be missed.

I love the Liberal Obama people like Beckle who truly believes that this Country will elect a Black man. One key factor that every poll has not shown is the race factor.     Comment: I really hope that "race" does not matter in this race. I am so tired of hearing hearing about "color" and "race" when it comes to the people running for President. This is America, Land of Opportunity, Home of the Brave, Originator of personal freedoms. I feel that this country needs to get of the racial angst pot so someone else can use it. We are all members of the HUMAN RACE. That should matter and what a person can do for this country, just like JFK said so many years ago. If Obama is the best choice, it should be made because of that, not some civil liberties sympathy. There is another point shaping up from this upcoming election. That is that we don't trust old folks to run our country. It is sad that "race" or "age" play such a major role in who we will vote for that we will overlook the qualifications of other "applicants". I still feel that Hillary would be the best option to get our country back on track. Yeah, Yeah, I know. She is out of the running. Why, because "we the people" have allowed the media to control who gets the airtime and who gets the boot. I remember hearing on CNN, I believe, that Hillary was out of the running a full three weeks before she actually stopped campaigning. It really makes me think, "who is really running this country and election options. I hope that we as a PEOPLE, as AMERICANS, know which person would be best to fix this country, and let us get her into office.
    I remember the biggest joke in the 90's was that Hillary was running the country then anyways. Well, if you remember that, and you remember the trillions of dollars of surplus that was available to us as a country, lets get that back. We all complain about not being able to make a difference on an individual level.
    Well, I am tired of playing the "victim", saying that I cannot make a difference. Guess what, with technology the way it is today, one person can start a national wildfire to let the government be "FOR THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE AND OF THE PEOPLE". We can each make a difference. I am doing what I can by posting here and elsewhere to get the AMERICAN VOICE to be heard again. LET US SHOUT TO THE WALLS OF THE WHITE HOUSE AND SOMEONE IS BOUND TO ANSWER. If we, as a people, want Hillary Clinton to be president, let us let the "OFFICIALS" know. Let our voices be heard.

    Senator Obama, and America is very lucky to have the Campaign Management Team he has. They are doing a very good job of mapping a strategy for a major victory for the Democrats in November, not just for the presidency, but for the house and senate as well.

    Now that Senator Clinton is on board, I think the Obama lead in the polls will increase 5 - 10 %. All (women) have to do is think of the Supreme Court Appointents under the next administration and the choice should be very easy.. I know it is in our household... I can't see my daughters and the women in my extensive family giving up all they fought so hard for giving it up to John McCain's court appointees.

    John McCain's voting record on women's rights and civil rights is a joke. Don't take my word - take a look in google and the congressional and senate archives.. Every vote he ever cast is there on the record.

    Not to mention major problems like the economy, gasoline prices, wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, Iran, environment, unemployment, crime, etc.. These are all very real and important issues.

    Senator McCain does not come across to me as a man who can stand and deliver,,,

    Comment: Elenor this article has a few problems. First you said Georgian hasn't gone democrat since 1976, but I believe Clinton won it in 1992 and lost it by one point in 1996. However Gore and Kerry lost it big (Gore by 12 and Kerry by 16). Also RealClearPolitics has Mccain ahead by 8.4 points average with some polls showing him ahead by as much as 14 points. You talk about Obamas gender gap being 12-21 points and compare it with Goer and Kerry. News flash they lost. He has to to much better than Goer or Kerry ditto for the hispanic margin. Here you didn't even cite the historic Clinton margin, but if Obamas range is 21-29 and Gore won by 27 Obama is in trouble even if he gets the 29 point advantage. I do hope Obama wins in the end the problem is some of his supporters are so blind the can't imagine he could loose. They were equally shocked when he lost OH, PA and KY and WV by huge margins. As a former HRC supporter I must view him a bit differently than his adoring media supporters. He is a politician with a chance at becomming president. With the choice between Obama and Mccain, I choose Obama, but he needs to connect with HRC supporters in a way that he hasn't yet. I will vote for him because the other choice is so bad, not because he has done much to attract me.
