    PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE TO BE HELD SUNDAY AT COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY

    The Free and Equal Elections Coalition (FREE) and the Columbia Political Union are pleased to announce that a Presidential debate will be held this coming Sunday, October 19th, 2008, on the campus of Columbia University.

    ALL SIX of the Presidential candidates who appear on enough state ballots to acquire the 270 Electoral Votes needed to become President are invited. They are as follows (listed in alphabetical order by affiliation):

    Constitution Party Candidate: Chuck Baldwin
    Democratic Party Candidate: Barack Obama
    Green Party Candidate: Cynthia McKinney
    Independent Candidate: Ralph Nader
    Libertarian Party Candidate: Bob Barr
    Republican Party Can John McCain

    The Columbia Political Union will present the debate from 8:00pm to 10:00pm in the Altschul Auditorium, located at 417 International Affairs Building. The debate will be moderated by Pacifica Radio's Amy Goodman, the host of "Democracy Now!". CSPAN will cover the debate, and live radio broadcasts are expected.

    "The Columbia Political Union is committed to energizing political discourse on Columbia's campus," said Allon Brann, Columbia Political Union Publisher. "As a non-partisan organization, we work to provide students with opportunities to encounter and engage with political ideas across a wide ideological spectrum, and on a wide range of issues."

    "It is with these goals in mind that we have organized this Presidential Debate: to give all candidates-- either within or outside of the political "mainstream"-- the opportunity to speak directly to students about their goals on the issues they deem critical for this country."

    "We have invited all eligible candidates, and it is our sincere hope that all will participate, to ensure the substance and rigor of the dialogue which we believe is crucial at this time."

    Certified letters officially inviting each candidate have been sent to the respective campaigns.

    The Free and Equal Elections Coalition and the Columbia Political Union await the response from the candidates. All candidates' supporters are encouraged to contact the Presidential campaigns and urge them to attend.

    The Columbia Political Union seeks to enhance involvement in the political process, domestic and international, and draw every member of the campus community into an ongoing discussion of political ideas.

    FREE is a coalition of political parties, independent citizens and civic organizations formed to promote free and equal elections in the United States.

Don't look now....but Obama's HUGE lead is now down to 3 points (see Gallop). Translation?     in the end there will be only one decision to make for those still on the fence...do you want to stay at war in Iraq (and possibly Iran) or do you want to start working to bring our troops home safely, where they can recoup their strength and refocus on their main target: Osama bin laden.

      As long as we are dependent on the oil coming out of that region, to drive our economy and our cars, and there aren't a lot of casualties... we need to stay in the ME. Of course, if Obama would lighten up on the drilling and nuclear power we wouldn't be dependent on their oil and our foreign policy wouldn't be tied in with possible conflicts in the ME. So my vote is for McCain if we are to bring the troops home anytime soon and still be able to function here at home. Alternative sources of energy use will take us decades to transition from oil usage and we haven't even started to expand or build forms of mass transportation for all "50" states.
      Obama is missing a few steps in the process, he wants to jump to something which hasn't even been determined (solar, wind, etc.), and meanwhile how many of us can afford $8 - $10/gallon of gas? I hope he plans on giving really high tax credits/rebates, we will be sending it all back to the OPEC nations so they can use it wisely to develop their own economies.

      I think the two questions are rather: Do you want to be fooled by anti american pro Africa flip flopper Barack Hussein Obama who put himself first and seems to changed his words in response to daily news like a chameleon.... ? or do who want to be led by a straight talker, a true american survivor "john MCain" who put his country first?

      Are Florida and Ohio part of the 50 state strategy? It is concerning. Florida is still double wounded. First because of the delegate debacle, and second because Hillary has overwhelming support of moderate Florida democrats. While hopefuly Obama wins, it seems the democrats would have had a better chance with Hillary. There are still many concerns with Obama related to experience, rhetoric, and arrogance.

        It is strange how they seem to imply they don't need FL or OH. Especially since FL's been burned by the DNC once already this year, why rub salt in the wounds and say they don't need that state? Not exactly inspiring voters to turn out.

        Obama has a western state strategy that as long as he holds the upper midwest allows him to win w/o FL and OH. My impression is that he is too eastern and too debonair for those independent ranchers. He is even showing signs of weakness in Oregon where accordingly to the latest polls he is only up by 3 points. Can he win NV, NM. CO? We will see.

          My feeling is it would be a lot easier for Obama to win liberals and moderates in Central and South Florida than it would be to win moderates in the upper mid west. Point being, if he loses Florida, I think he is toast. If he can convince FL, It hink NV, NM and CO will follow suit, and possibly OH too. I think he will either get less than 240 electoral votes, or more than 300.

    Georgia last went went Democratic in 1992, not 1976 as Newsweek proclaims. Bill Clinton won all of its electoral votes that year. That's pretty embarrassing that Newsweek got such an obvious fact wrong

    Well,one thing is settled,if nothing else. Obama may well become president,which may be for better or worse,as one cannot see this far into the future insofar as domestic and foreign issues will allow,both being always and anon in flux. But this thing is known. Any American trust in what remains in the Fourth Estate will be shattered beyond any repair. Acting as partisan political advocates at this stage,they will never be seen as ''journalists''in any capability. Thus viewer and readership will continue their decline,forcing century-and-beyond old newspapers and magazines to slip into the oblivion where they belong. The debates in the new presidency,will take place in the battlegrounds of opinion of the Internet,where the ''new journalism''of decidely more libertarian,less stridently partisan content,will replace the old. Clift can then be relied upon to go mutter her inanities at Radcliffe or some such and old copies of NEWSWEAK can be utilized as firestarters.

    Your a moron you know that. You and all these desperate conservatives who are now reduced to relying on the "Bradley" effect of people lying to pollsters about being willing to vote for a black candidate when they actually plan to vote for McCain. Question - why would anyone do that? The only two reasons posed by you losers is (1) white voters are embarrased to say they wouldnt vote for Obama because it might lead to them being labeled racists and (2) white voters may want to artifically inflate Obama's poll numbers to McCain's upset all that more crushing. Both arguments are absurd. Dealing with each in order (1) given the well documented problems Obama had with "working class white voters" in OH, PA, KY, and WV, white voters have no problem expressing a choice "other" than Obama and noone would credibly call them racists just because they tell some pollster they support McCain.

    As to (2), helping Obama's poll numbers, even if only to mislead him as to the support he has in one state or another, permits Obama the credibility to go to donors and raise incredible amounts of money. That money not only imperils McCain's chances of winning the race in ways those voters could not possibly foresee, it allows Obama to pull along a whole host of down ballot democratic candidates that could threaten to swell the democratic majorities in congress to insurmountable margins even if Obama lost. Why would these white voters allow Obama to gain such momentum, favorable press, and money when such advantages could easily bring in enough voters to make up for their "fake" votes and still tip it to Obama? Thats a serious risk these white voters need not take to defeat Obama and I've yet to hear a conservative explain why such a risk would be taken unnecessarily.

    Bottom line, McCain cannot win without OH an MI and Obama has early leads in both. Obama can win without OH or MI (even though he is certain to take at least one of those) and the current RCP electoral map has Obama up 238 to McCain's 190 (and thats with giving McCain FL just for the sake of argument). Obama's favorability rating is now +30 while McCain's is just +15. You can believe that all the folks polled by so many pollsters are lying (a rather convenient belief now that McCain is down in the polls and a belief I wager you wouldnt hold if the reverse were true), but I rely upon the empirical evidence available and that right now suggests Obama is winning. Its early, so we'll see. Just wonering what country you and all these conservatives have agreed amongst yourself to relocate to should Obama win. Just wanted to know so that I can avoid ever visiting the place or even mentioning it in polite conversation. Have a good trip morons - trust that you will not be missed.

Hello....where have you been? Read some of the posts of your liberal friends, who make it completely clear that if one doesn't blindly support Obama, then they must be racist!     So great is the intelligence of Obama that I am concerned that the USA should recognise this as fully as it deserves.

    He should be crowned Emperor Obama the Great in a ceremony modelled on the coronation of that other hugely gifted man, Emperor Bokassa of the Central African Republic.

    Emperor Bokassa's coronation ceremony, complete with carriages drawn by white horses in all the healthful, steaming heat of Bangui, is an event still cherished in the capacious memory of Africa.

    This coronation of Emperor Obama, certain to glisten with a particularly grateful sheen at the top of the world's social register of glittering occasions, will serve to inaugurate an extremely desirable trend: America's shaking off of its woeful provincialism and its adoption of an only too needful willingness to learn from that first instructor of all mankind: Africa !

    ALL the expereience in the WORLD cannot make up misguided policies. Inotherwords, McCain HAS a lot of experience following the wrong policies, especially on IRAQ or the ECONOMY.

    OBAMA NEEDS TO Associate McCAIN with the word war as much as possible. Everytime McCain throws out the experience question OBAMA has to stress that new experience is needed to improve the economy not "OLD EXPERIENCE".

    There is no one out there that feels that the REPUBLICANS can improve the economic situation of the MIDDLE CLASS. THE REPUBLICANS AND McCain have abused the MIDDLE CLASS. LET THE RICH PAY FOR WAR NOT THE MIDDLE CLASS. WE PAY AND HALLIBURTION GET RICH. McCAIN is going to lose by a landslide not even KARL ROVE CAN SAVE HIM.
