Darwin did not defend his own theory in 1860 at the Oxford meeting, it was T. H. Huxley. In fact, Darwin did not like public controversy and let others (who often did not agree with natural selection) defend evolution for him.

1858: Debated Stephen A. Douglas seven times in failed Senate campaign
1860: Elected 16th U.S. president
1863: Issued Emancipation Proclamation and delivered Gettysburg Address
1865: Assassinated by John Wilkes Booth. Buried in Springfield, Ill.
